    • The Death of the Penny

      Steven

Today is the day in Canada where the penny is being abolished. Exiled. Banished. Ok no, not entirely. However, the mint is no longer making them, and businesses will no longer give them as part of your change. Change will be rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cent mark. For example, change of 1.02 will become 1, and change of 1.03 will be 1.05. This doesn't affect card transactions though, just for cash.

Businesses will still accept them and you can also send yours in to banks, but overall, this is the beginning of the end for the small copper coin in our country. I think I need a moment to compose myself as the tears won't stop flowing. I'll miss ya little buddy.

    • Dessert pizza

      Steven

So last night I went out to dinner with friends to a place called Boston Pizza. I mentioned this to Julia, and she pointed out that Boston is not exactly a place world renowned for their pizza, but I digress. It's basically a mid level, pizza/pasta/sandwich restaurant that's pretty decent, and I believe is called Boston's The Gourmet Pizza in the several locations in the States it has.

So anyway, I had a pulled pork sandwich, which was pretty good, but the meat of our story comes from dessert. I was still pretty hungry so I ordered the "S'mores pizza" dessert. It was priced similar to the other desserts so I figured it was a standard single person portion. This is what I received.

      Dessert2_zps48edbf32.jpg

It's hard to tell from the picture, but this was a bit smaller than a pizza hut personal pan pizza, so, pretty damn sizable for a dessert, especially with all that delicious on top, but not ridiculous. I managed to just barely finish it, though it took some effort, though one of my friends had a small corner. Also, I should mention it came with two spoons, so I was like, oh ok, and used one as a knife to cut and the other to eat.

When the server came by she said she had never seen anyone finish it themselves and that she was impressed. I probably then should have asked for some sort of plaque to put on a wall there, but I missed my chance. Ah well.

But yeah, it was amazing. However, I paid for it this morning. That's uh, all I'll say on that subject.

Be it a story, pun, one-liner, whatever, gimme your best. Here's one to start you off.

Why don't government employees look out their window in the morning?

Because then they'd have nothing to do in the afternoon!

    • A pre-RTX trip to Austin

      Steven

Not many of you know this, but Julia and I will be taking a not so stealthy trip to Austin next month. We're still ironing out the details of exactly what we'll be doing but the primary cause for the trip is due to me not having visited my sister at her new home since she moved over a year ago. So as I don't want to continue being a terrible brother, I am finally going to visit! Julia gets to come too because she's special. (But also I guess so that I can spend time with her too. I GUESS.)

It's also a perfect time because it's during my reading week at college (study break), and it's also far enough away from RTX that Barbara won't be currently having like 6 aneurysms, so she'll have some time to chill and show us around.

Julia and I are also excited to genuinely explore Austin, something we couldn't do during RTX because there was just not enough time. We are going to eat ALL the barbecue. Or Barbaracue. hehehehehe

Also, Julia has been furiously preparing a list of museums and other interesting places to check out. We will probably be at least checking out the State Capitol building.

There is also a very real chance I melt. I know it's February, but I'm Canadian and pale.

But yeah, other than that, I guess we'll play it by ear. Austin is very spread out so we'll have some fun figuring out how to get around, but it should be an experience. And yes, we'll take pictures.

    • Magic cards

      Steven

Alright, so let's get things out of the way. Yeah, I'm a nerdlinger. I play Magic: the Gathering. But then again, given that we're all members of this site, we're all nerds in some way or another.

I play regularly, generally about once or twice a week at my local game store, depending on how busy with school I am. I also occasionally travel to other cities to play in large tournaments. I wouldn't consider myself that exceptional of a player. I'm alright, but I know and play with people far better. My best result is 67th in an event called a Grand Prix, which are enormous, open events that generally attract over 1000 players, and happen all over the world. This one was in Toronto. 67th may sound incredible given a field of over 1000, but 64th and better are the ones who get prizes. I would've won $200 if my tiebreakers had been just a little bit better.

It's a really fun game, and has a huge amount of strategy. It was the very first major collectible card game, and is still the most popular in the world, played by millions of people. If you've never tried it before, I would definitely encourage trying it out and learning. There are some great beginner products that teach the game. It's not too hard to learn, but has an extraordinarily large amount of complexity the more advanced you get.

It's also tons of fun to figure out how to build decks. You get to choose from whatever cards are legal in the format you're playing, and go from there. There are synergies, combos, and tons of different playstyles.

In conclusion, try it out. Find some friends to play too or even a local hobby store that runs events. Like any hobby, if you get really into it, it can get expensive, but how much you spend is up to you.

Here's a video to watch that shows the fun side of Magic and tournaments:

    • Steven's Guide to Hockey - Part 2

      Steven

      Hello again beginner hockey fan!

The last time I left you, I had instructed you to watch a game or two of hockey and then report back here. For the purposes of this journal, I've going to assume you have. Now then, to explain some of the rules you may have been confused about! Don't worry, there's not actually that many.

First, you may have noticed that hockey has a penalty box. A player is sent to the penalty box by the referee if they commit one of the predefined hockey penalties in eyesight of a ref. Naturally, whether they actually committed the penalty or not is subjective just like in football and basketball, so naturally there is often fan ire directed at the refs. A normal or "minor" penalty lasts two minutes, a "major" penalty (it generally has to be pretty serious for this to be issued. Drawing blood often causes these) is 4 minutes or 5 minutes if it's for fighting, and game misconduct, which is 10 minutes, though the team only gets shorthanded for 2 minutes.

During a penalty, the offending team is shorthanded one player and is on the "penalty kill". The other team is on a "power play". Obviously, a power play is an advantage so teams try their best to take advantage. In addition, if the team on the PP scores, the penalty is cut short and teams resume even-strength play. This rule does not apply to major penalties.

The other two major rules are off-side and icing. A note, the ice is divided into three areas separated by the blue lines. There is each team's zone, and in the middle is called the neutral zone.

A team is off-side when the puck enters the opposing zone after one of that team's players does.

Icing occurs when a player shoots the puck from inside his zone to the other side and it makes it all the way to the other end of the rink past the end red line, or goal line (not into the net, but past the line that is in line with where the net is), and then is touched by a player of the opposing team. If your team can touch it first, it negates it. This causes races to the puck, and sometimes even injury, so there's discussion to reform this rule where touching the puck isn't required.

Now then, about fighting. This concept may seem strange, as this is what really differentiates hockey from other sports. Fighting is technically a penalty, 5 minutes for both players, but is not discouraged in any way beyond that. It's often seen as a way to pump energy into your team. The normal way you "win" a fight is by getting your opponent to the ice. When either that happens or the refs have had enough, they'll break it up. However, these are hockey fights, not normal fights. The players are wearing padded gear, though the punches to the face can hurt and cause cuts. It's definitely an interesting dynamic to the game. It also let's the players get out frustration mid-game in a (sort of) legal manner.

So yeah, that was probably the more technical and wordy journal I'll post about this, but it's important stuff to know. I would heavily recommend watching more, and if you haven't had a chance yet, don't let all this scare you. It's certainly less to know than football and probably about the same as basketball, so if you follow either of those you should have no trouble.
