They don't need to - I work for Australia's largest government employer (including department of defence, but not including the armed services), so most lawyers know them. The law firm I have gone to has taken the tax office and Comcare to court before - and won......

    • Gen

No, but they did pay for the telephone interview and the meeting that I had in person, and they apparently will cover any telephone support I need from the lawyer....

So I guess they are offsetting some of the cost - but nothing that would really help...

My knees are jacked, but that's one of those life-long things. It's not going to get better until I completely demolish them and get them replaced. Not that I'm going for that, but I think it's just the reality I have to live with. Very few people stepped up to fight, and while I don't think I'm particularly competitive after all this time off, I'm going to give it a go, if only to see where I stand.

Dwell is going to be a year almost exactly. How's the WOCS app going? Any word or progress?

Heh, is that supposed to be an underhanded reference to Rumsfeld? I love how all the anti-war, anti-Bush, anti-anti-anti pussies out there got their shit in an uproar when he said that. Far as I know, it's a simple truth of warfare. Go to war with the force and equipment you've got, not with what you wish you had.

Am I the only one who rolls his eyes at the irony of wearing armor plates labeled "handle with care?"

I didn't have any trouble getting it on by myself. It's certainly a bit slower than the IBA. Unfortunately, us low-speed-high-drag types don't get the sexy name-brand goodies! smiley8.gif

six seconds to fire 30 rounds is way too fast to be accurate,

Exactly. That tears a hole in their first argument that "it all happened so fast". It takes time to dump that much ammo (plus he had to reload in order to do it). During that time, it should become clear (if you are a trained, professional law enforcement officers) that you either aren't taking return fire or your target is wounded/dead.

Another hole in their "credibility" - which is what the judge used to set them free, mind you - is that the detective let the moment where they may have been a threat pass him by completely. The one guy stuck his hand in his pocket and mimed having a gun...fine. That is the moment where the potential for violence is the highest and he let them walk away and get into their car. According to their (the detectives') accounts, he didn't even give them a command to stop until they were all seated and the engine was running.

Then, a non-uniformed, armed man (our intrepid detective) comes out waving a gun and orders the car to stop. Put yourself inside that car and tell me what your reaction would have been. Remember that you're a 20-something year old kid who just came out of a bachelor party at a strip club in a bad neighborhood. You're unarmed and you don't see a legitimate law enforcement officer anywhere. Their reaction was the only normal one.

Proper police procedure would have been to get the license plate number, follow them and use a uniformed officer in a marked car to pull them over in a traffic stop. Instead these boneheads opened fire into a moving vehicle when the occupants weren't ever presenting a clear threat to the public. Even if they weren't guilty of manslaughter, they are guilty of the worst kind of police incompetence and no longer deserve to wear that badge.

They're a disgrace to an otherwise noble and honorable profession...

I'm 0/4. Let's hope I work a deal tomorrow and end up 1/5! That'd be a good way to start the 4-day. Plus there's an early jump next Tuesday and they're doing initial manifest tomorrow afternoon. Might get that one too. We'll see. Lots of TBI and broke-dick guys can't get on jumps, but there's way too many pay hurts waiting for jumps as well.

By the way, now that I'm a member of the Traditional Order of Propblasted Jumpers ( smiley11.gifsmiley11.gifsmiley11.gif ), I think I'll head downtown and start researching Saint Michael at the local ink spots. Dedbob got it done across his entire side, and it looks amazing. I'm not looking to go that big, but we'll see where the search takes me.

Call it a little pre-deployment good luck.

Last May - the day before my parents went on holidays for 7 months - Helen fell off my step-fathers back (well he tripped, and Helen slid off his back, he did try, he got hurt too...) and landed on her elbow. The result was a nasty fracture that should've been pinned, but the stupid doctor said no. IDIOT. So 11 months later, and her arm is fine. Except that she can over straighten it. Makes a perfect swimmers arm bigsmile.png
She will have to have surgery when her bones stop growing - so in 10 years or so - to straighten her arm... Only if she wants it done.

      Very stressful time.

The words I NEVER want to hear again - we have just taken Helen to hospital.....................

So that is what happened to her arm. There is probably a journal about it somewhere, I will see if I can find it for you.

Please hold......... <insert hold music - preferably "Girl from Ipanema">

You're back? I thought you dumped this place for permanent! I'm guessing you didn't get my last few e-mails, or decided to ignore me completely (either is fine)

I'm at 3rd BCT, hanging out in the S-3 shop for HHC. Yeah, it sucks, but it's the right thing to do until I've got my shit together to go take a company. Just gotta stay motivated and keep my eyes on the prize, ya know?

I didn't get your email. Unfortunately, one of the kids dropped the external hard drive that my Outlook PST was on, so I basically missed everything that I received while at Ranger school. Can you re-send?

I figured YouTube might be blocked there. They ran 3 tests using a Chevy truck--slow drive over, fast drive over, and a grind-with-front-tire then burn-out over the mags. In addition to the PMag, they used standard aluminum USGI, Orlite polymer, Thermold polymer, and even an HK. Now, there could have been video trickery of course, but each of the others failed (some spectacularly) at least one of the other tests--including the HK. The Pmag passed them all. At the end, they loaded it did a functions check with mag release and then ejecting every cartridge. I'd like to have seen it fired, but I'm pretty convinced.

New kiddo is getting close to sleeping through the night. I think we're down to one wake-up on average. The other two are up with their grandparents until 17 July, so the house is super-quiet. I miss the little clowns, but a little bit of peace feels good. We should have a chance to do some home maintenance and cleaning while they're away. I want to go through this place with a flame-thrower, there's so much shit we don't need. Problem is, every time I overcome my pack-rat nature, my wife's kicks in. Hell, I would have been happy if the movers had accidentally dropped our conex off the boat while loading!

If I was still in Korea, I'd go downtown and get one of those long tabs that says, "Powerpoint Ranger." And then I'd wear it every day in this class. And I'd talk shit to guys without their tabs and imply that they're nice guys, but less manly. smiley8.gif

Hey, when you get a chance, check out PMags from Magpull. Dedbob mentioned that he was trying them out, and if he's happy with them, I was ready to give 'em a shot. At $15, they're a helluva lot cheaper than the H&K mags, and they're quite a bit lighter too. Much, MUCH sturdier than standard GI mags (link goes to some guys running them over with a truck, then loading and firing), and the follower doesn't cock and jam the way it does on GI mags. I'll shoot 'em this weekend, but just from handling them, I'm pretty impressed.

Happy Father's Day yourself! Well, happy as it can be when you're there and they're here.

Damn man, the amount of damage those things can withstand while the guys inside survive unscathed--it's just incredible. They're friggin quiet too--especially when you turn the turbo off for that last couple hundred yards before the objective. Seriously, it's like standing next to a diesel F-250. Ft Rich and Ft Lewis are pretty decent too! Light's still my first choice, but I wouldn't be unhappy at all with Strykers.
