I finished UFO ET (PC game).

I am pretty pleased with it.

For those that aren't XCOM fans or have never played it,
UFO Extraterrestrials is a combined RTS/TBS game.

The Real time portion is limited, but it's an interesting mix.

In real time you send out ships to shoot down alien craft,
then in the turned based segment you explore the "wreckage", or
in other missions you just explore shooting aliens as you go.
(Which isn't really wreckage in this game without the mod.
Shot down UFO's don't look like they were shot down.

I feel like I got it for a good price at $20 (EB Games). Even without seeing the game I was tempted by
the Future Shop price of $30.

It didn't bother me that I could only have soldiers/manufacturing/research at one base.

I really liked being able to assign points to the soldiers as they went up levels,
and that you could see them getting experience points.

The technology you had to research was adequate (by that, I mean I wasn't annoyed by it.
There was more of it then in XCOM.)
I liked that you didn't have to research weapons and their clip serparately.
I didn't have a problem with clips for LASER weapons, I just thought of them as batteries.

I also didn't have a problem with holding two big weapons, one in each hand.
You see it in the movies all the time.

Needing to build components for the final spaceship was interesting,
though someone else already posed the question:

"why do you have to learn to build an space ship?
You already got to this different planet from Earth."

I played the game on "easy" and I still thought it was challenging.
There are some pretty deadly alien units in the game.

The replay ability seems to be there.

I am playing the game at least one more time, and then I may try "bman's mod".
It is suppose to make the game even more "XCOM"-like and gives you a lot of
      control over different settings.

This will probably replace the the original XCOM game for me.

Though the graphics are not "state of the art",
it was a refreshing change from the original EGA graphics in XCOM.

I say probably because I still liked the differences in "Terror from the Deep",
so the differences in the original XCOM may have me going back to it at some point.

The unit movement seemed a bit touchy, and I still occasionally try to click on a new unit
and end up moving the last unit.

The TBS 3D layers isn't as functional as XCOM.
If you are at an elevator, you can't shoot between levels, though the aliens will try anyways.

You need the patch for this game, and even then there are a couple of bugs left, but not
enough to cause too much annoyance, just try to save the game occasionally.

I'd give this game an 8 out of 10 for XCOM fans.
      For myself, it's probably a 9.

If you don't like turn based strategy games, this game is not for you.

      Pan's Labyrinth

I watched Pan's Labyrinth last weekend, only because I got to borrow the movie for free.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but still not a children's movie.

By bad, I thought it was a horror movie, of which type I am not a fan of.

It was good to see once and since it was free, I give it a 6 out of 10.

I know there are a lot of fans out there, but that is what I thought of it.
      Please, no flames.

      ---------------------------------------

      Alien vs Perdator 2

I could have lived without seeing this one.
I didn't like the first A vs P and I this one was worse.

      Who thinks up this stuff?

The first few minutes was a downer and then it continued.

This is like the old style horror movies where anyone could die senselessly,
      and pretty hopelessly.

It didn't make sense even if you put aside the timeline with the movies.

I'd give it a 3 or 4 out of 10. I suppose I needed to see it, just to get it out of my system.

My take on the Death of the Mod Point -

      Journal Master Index

    • My take on the Death of the Mod Point -

      Stonesword

I'll be posting this on the "News" page as well.

The Good, the Bad and the Really?

      The Good:

      1) I no longer have to "worry" about modding someone too soon after they modded me.
Heaven forbid that I get banned from the site for something that "means nothing" and "doesn't matter"

      2) I no longer have to feel guilty about having too many mod points.

      3) No more mod contests

      4) No more "policing" of mod points.
Really, I think this should have been handled by the system.
Sure there was still a chance of a bug in the system that could have been exploited,
but "so what"? Once it's found, you fix it.
(and being a programmer myself, I can appreciate the effort it might have taken, and no I would not have wanted to be the person to program it)

      The Bad:

      1) Mod points were fun/amusing.
Most of the people on this site play some sort of video game.
Mod points were just as fun as getting more points for "killing a mummy" over "killing a zombie".

      2) They were also similar to getting a higher score in something like "Asteroids".

      3) They had their "uniqueness" over other web sites that didn't have them.

      4) I can no longer boast people to level 20 so they can access the +20 forum where I do most of my posting. I realize some people "frowned" upon this, saying new people should earn the right to post, but I think that's part of the responsibility of the people that have been around longer. To vouch for people that are good posters.

      5) No more mod contests (Yes, I realize I have this under both)

      Really?

      1) There are other things on the web site that I suspect are being abused. Are they going to be fixed?

      The most on-line list.
Yes, I myself have stayed logged in all day so I can check my alerts without having to log in each time. But staying logged in for months?

      The most watched list.
      A very common journal is:
"I'm being watched by x number of people but only getting y comments"

I suspect there is a bug in the system where a deleted account can still effect the most watched list.

I also suspect that it was abused by people creating phoney accounts to boast someone on the list.

I don't see the big deal of someone wanting to get on one of these lists other than a waste of resources.

The point is "Why was the mod point system being singled out?"

      2) I don't think pointing out what was done on other sites with mod point systems is a very strong argument.

You can't please everyone, by why would you want to "please" people that aren't even on this site?

      Conclusion:

There's probably more but those are probably the major ones I can think of.

I think I would lean more towards the "old system",
but the new system isn't causing me to be "too unhappy".

This might be a bit long, with lots of pictures.

If you can only look at one, look at the last one, it's my favorite.

I reposted a journal called "moving pictures" from about two years ago.

      Here..
      rvb.roosterteeth.com/members/journal/entry.php?id=1807245

You may have seen them around before, hopefully at least one of these will be new to you.

This one is a bit "busier"

      wheels.jpg

Remember, this is not an animated gif.

These two are more distracting versions of older illusions of "are the lines straight" and "is it a circle"

      lines.jpg

      circles.jpg

This one works by "tiring" your eye. I believe the atfer effect is due to "visible purple".
That's what is was called about forty years ago when I saw my first picture with this effect.

      Illusion.jpg

And the grand finale. I think it's related to the effect from the last one.
This is an animated gif, but it's also cool.

This is a cool optical illusion by Michael Bach and JL Hilton.
Look at the rotating dots and you will only see a pink dot disappearing in motion.
Now concentrate on the black plus sign in the centre.
Gradually you will see that the moving dot turns green and magically disappears.
      Cool optical illusion!

I thought I would try having a poll once a week. Sort of a poll day.

No, I'm not "hooked on polls". In fact, I was sort of missing polls because the last forum site I was on had them (and they weren't limited to 10 responses and the response could be longer).

I still can't find the funny polls that seemed to be all over the place before, so I have to come up with my own ideas, and lo and behold, the news comes to the rescue again.

There was an incident locally on a school bus where a student took the buses emergency axe and threatened another student with it.

So on the news today they were discussing whether the axes are even required anymore.

      So, the poll...

IN PRISON..........you spend the majority of your time in an 10X10 cell.
AT WORK............you spend the majority of your time in an 8X8 cubicle.

IN PRISON.........you get three meals a day.
AT WORK...........you get a break for one meal and you have to pay for it.

IN PRISON..........you get time off for good behavior.
AT WORK............you get more work for good behavior.

IN PRISON..........the guard locks and unlocks all the doors for you.
AT WORK............you must often carry a security card and open all the doors for yourself.

IN PRISON..........you can watch TV and play games.
AT WORK...........you could get fired for watching TV and playing games.

IN PRISON.........you get your own toilet.
AT WORK..........you have to share the toilet with some people who pee on the seat.

IN PRISON..........they allow your family and friends to visit.
AT WORK............you aren't even supposed to speak to your family.

IN PRISON.........all expenses are paid by the taxpayers with no work required.
AT WORK............you get to pay all your expenses to go to work, and they deduct taxes from your salary to pay for prisoners.

IN PRISON..........you spend most of your life inside bars wanting to get out.
AT WORK ...........you spend most of your time wanting to get out and go inside bars.

For June 8th - Extreme LOTTO!!

Over 1460 mods have been given so far.

      The Prizes:
For as long as mod points exist (if the system change happens in between Lotto's, bragging rights will have to suffice)

I wonder how that is going to work now that they are no longer going for "version numbers"

You get a mod just for entering.
Exceptions: If you pick a number that has already been chosen - no mod for you!

Maximum prize is 21, 20 mods for picking the winning number and of course one for entering .
If no one picks the winning number, then 10 for the closest guess.
If two people are closest to the winning number, then 5 mods each.
Those that did not win any of the above prizes will still get 1 mod if they got one digit correct in the correct spot.

      The Rules:
One guess per user per draw.
Once a user picks a number, the next user must pick out of the remaining unpicked numbers.
Guesses are between 1 and 100.
If by some chance all 100 numbers have been chosen, you'll have to try next week.

Once the draw has been made, the next draw will be in a new journal, starting the guessing over.
Drawing will take place, hopefully, each Sunday.

For purposes of correct digits, 100 is considered 00, and the numbers 1-9 will be considered 01-09.

      Good luck!

(I have been doing the "Sunday Lottery" since February 4th by draw date or January 28th by journal, of 2007.
It was not an original idea, though I don't recall anyone else giving points for parts of the correct number.
I occasional get asked how I am picking the winning numbers. The answer is in the first journal,
here, How are winning numbers picked)
