Hey, everybody! Guess who's had a hankering for writing today?

If you guessed anyone other than me, you're probably right. Still, it would have been nice to have been in your thoughts. You pricks.

Anyways. 2015 has started in earnest for me. There's always those first couple of weeks after New Year's Day that I'm disconnected from the fact that another year has passed. Writing the correct date, that sort of thing. Especially when it comes to all the paperwork you have to file as a doctoral candidate.

That's going well, by the way. Still have another year left before I can finish the program. It does get annoying to answer the question of when I'm going to finish school to everyone I meet. Still, I am almost there and after I finish, well... I guess I become an official adult. I think.

It sounds so cliche, right? People around you expecting you to act a certain way after you graduate, yet you yourself feel like you just got out of high school. If nothing else, I can pretend to act like a grown up.

New friends, new hobbies, same old work. If anything else comes up, I'll let you know.
      Thepio.

After more than 2 years without a computer, I am back.

I've been wanting to build a computer for a long time but something always got in the way of me saving money to buy the components.

Well, no more. This baby was built by my own 2 hands. I'm here to stay.

I got a call last Friday morning, one of those calls you hope never to get, but knowing that you eventually do. My grandma passed away, and I just came back from the funeral. She leaves behind 7 children and more than 10 grandchildren. Even some great-grandchildren.

She was the core of our family, and it's hard to imagine life without her. But after seeing our family come together again, seeing every one of my loved ones grieve and remember this woman who gave so much of herself to us, I'm at peace. Because I know that her legacy lives on in all of us. The values and motivations she instilled in us will not disappear.

      Still, I will miss her.

Thanks for listening. And thanks, Grandma. For being with us so long, and loving us the way you did.

    • Arkham City. You. Are. BATMAN.

      THEPIO Engineseer Maximus

Hey, peeps. Thepio here with a journalistic account of my thoughts and cogitations.

If you haven't guessed already, this journal's main topic will be the adventures of yours truly into the amazing work that Rocksteady Studios has done in Batman: Arkham City. Now, first off, let me clarify something. This is not a review of the game. Why am I not calling it a review? A review focuses on three things: gameplay mechanics, overall story and plot, and pros and cons. It then offers an opinion as to whether or not the money invested in this game repays you in entertainment value. If you need my opinion in order to make a choice as to whether or not to purchase a game, A) you put way too much stock in my opinion, which is a little creepy and WHY DO YOU PUT SUCH PRESSURE ON ME?!! WHY DO YOU NEED MY OPINION?! WHAT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT AND YOU BLAME ME FOR MAKING YOU SPEND MONEY??; and B) Why aren't you playing this already? This is seriously one of the best games of this console generation. An absolute must have. So this is not a review. I will mainly focus on my feelings as I traversed through the game. I will talk a little bit about how the combat empowers, yet at the same time challenges you, and how the general ambiance of the game really makes you feel like you are Batman. I will, of course, try to be spoiler-free as much as possible.

As I first started the game, I couldn't help but notice the improvement in graphics over the previous game. Just seeing the facial animations I was amazed at the level of polish that the game has. Then, just as I was wondering if we were going to sneak into Arkham City through the ventilation system or the sewers, BAM! Shit goes down, and Bruce Wayne is knocked out and tossed into the city in front of fucking everyone in Gotham City. I was befuddled, to say the least. Why did I get arrested? Why was I not Batman when the game started? Suddenly, I realized it. Batman doesn't wake up as Batman. He wakes up as Bruce Wayne and becomes Batman (Yes, I know it's a direct quote from Kill Bill 2. Bite me. It makes sense) So I had to start as Bruce Wayne and become Batman. It's a transition of state. You go from being powerless and on the run, to being powerful and on the hunt.

Hearing Hugo Strange for the first time, I couldn't help but shudder. The gravitas of the character, his omniscience, everything about this character overwhelms you. You truly feel threatened. And then, you see Arkham City for the first time. No words can describe the feeling of awe I felt when I first saw the sprawling city laid out in front of me. Beautiful, yet decrepit. Enclosed, but with a freedom rarely seen in games. I can heap loads of praise to the architecture of Arkham City, but that would take too much space in this journal.

The first major battle of the game, in front of the courthouse, took me a while to beat. I started on Hard difficulty, thinking that since I was a veteran of Arkham Asylum, I could handle whatever the game threw at me. And I was wrong. Sooo wrong. The enemies are smarter, more aggressive, and (since I was playing on Hard) every hit took a big chunk of my health. It wasn't until I ramped up my attacks, becoming more and more aware of all the threats that surrounded me, that I realized what a brilliant job the programers had done in immersing you into the role of Batman. He's the epitome of human physical and mental potential, but he's still human. He can be overwhelmed if he's not careful. So he must not only be aware of threats, but react to them before they can become an issue. That's where his wonderful arsenal of gadgets become a deciding factor between victory or defeat. It's true that you can win using only the basic strike and counter buttons, and against a small goon group, you really don't need anything else. But using your arsenal makes you feel like a superhero, because you are using not only your physical prowess, but also the array of tools that you developed to combat crime. They are your signature items. They are essential if you want to win the big fights.

Going off on a tangent here, but it's something that really bugs me when I read some game reviews. A complaint I read about the game was how the combat aspect was repetitive. Now, this is a complaint I've seen in many reviews and it primarily stems from this idea: "I've found a combo/weapon/technique that works really well. In fact, it works so well I can pretty much use throughout the game. Sure, it sometimes doesn't work with some of the bosses, but that's just the game trying to mess with me. I don't even need to use all the other options that the game provides me, since I can just use this and I will win most of the time. Man, that sure is repetitive." Now, I will tell you why this is the single most idiotic act that a game reviewer can do. Finding a particularly effective combo does not mean the game is repetitive. It means you are lazy. You can't bother to use all the tools at your disposal because you find button-mashing to be easier? The game does not force you to do the same action over and over, you are. It is not the game's fault that you don't want to expand on your experience by using all the available tools just so that you don't have to use different commands.

So, back to the game. The overwhelming sensation you get from this game doesn't come from the city alone. The multitude of side quests, collectibles, and hidden riddles are one of the game's greatest accomplishments. You are Batman, you are trying to solve the mystery of Arkham city. But at the same time, all the villains in it have plans of their own, and if you don't stop them, no one will.

In short, Batman: Arkham City has been one of the greatest interactive experiences I have ever enjoyed. No matter if you're a video game fan, a comic book fan, or a Batman fan. You will enjoy every single moment of this game.

      This is Thepio, signing off.

Factoid of the day: I'm Batman. And you can be too.

      THEPIO Engineseer Maximus

Hey, everybody. Thepio here with another journal detailing the wondrous misadventures of yours truly.

In case you haven't noticed, (or haven't cared to notice) I have been absent for a significantly longer time than my usual work/school related absences. While the concept is simple(I moved), there were complications and it turned into a messy affair. I will attempt my best to explain.

About 5 months ago, my landlord asked me to move out because he wanted to renovate the house. I complied and started looking for a new residence. About 2 months ago, I found what I thought was a decent enough place. I could afford it and the owner informed me that the room had cable and that there was wireless internet available in the whole house. I signed a month-to-month lease, paid the deposit and started settling in. On the first couple of days, I began noticing something odd. When I first started searching for the wireless, there were no available networks in range. And when I hooked up what I thought was the cable, there was no signal.

Needless to say, I was perplexed. I decided to ask one of my new housemates if there was a problem with the service that the owner wasn't aware of. When I first moved in, the housemates were not there yet. I thought they might have gone out or something. So I decided to wait for them to come back. And waited. And waited some more. And that's when I realized that something not entirely pleasant was going on in this house. Three full days passed without me seeing another human being in this place. On the fourth day finally managed to catch one them, who proceeded to dutifully inform me that due to a previous guest stealing the cable box and modem, and leaving the rest of the housemates to pay the fines, they had canceled the service.

This sent an immediate red light to me. A tenant had canceled a service that is supposed to be controlled by the landlord. I decided immediately that I was going to move again. Problem was, classes had already started and I needed more time to find out a new place. So I decided to wait a little bit and paid for another month.

In the meantime, I had to use public wi-fi and look again for a new place. Finally, last Wednesday I found an ad for an apartment. It has all the utilities, including cable and Wi-Fi; the guy that I pay to lets me use his 52-inch LCD to play X-Box. So overall, I think I'm going to be just fine here.

That's all I have for now. Laters.

With that weather I'll take Irvine. I'm from lovely warm weather and can't really stand the rain. We get tuition waved on exchange so that's not a factor. But from weather descriptions alone, 6 mths - 1 year in LA sounds far more appetising.

    • DolphinPlato

Mech and Aerospace is my major and having never traveled to the continental US (Hawaii is nice) I wouldn't even begin to guess at whether SF or LA is the nicer city. Though according to the estimated living costs I was given. Irvine is about 4000 USD cheaper to live at. I take all that with a grain of salt though.

Some of the Voice Dub is off on some of the episodes, and I some of the episodes may no longer be there due to infringement but a vast majority are. I have only been watching season 3 from this site so I don't know about Seasons 1 and 2.

American Psycho is an amazing movie.

I like to think of it as a Prequel to Dexter.

Bateman kills anyone he feels like when he gets the urge.

Dexter mastered his urges and kills bad people so that his killing serves a purpose.

I don't know if you watch Dexter, but you should look into it.
