    • Watered Down Games and Casualization

I'm kind of sick of being a fan of games. Within the last few years, I've picked up Gears of War: Judgment, Halo 4, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and have played Bioshock Infinite, Resident Evil 6, and Dead Space 3.

All parts of great franchises, these games' predecessors have built enormous fanbases that are devoted to these series and contribute to them, whether it be a monetary contribution or sending the developers support through emails or just spreading the game around. You're probably a part of some of these fanbases, and you probably don't read into this as much as I do, but anybody familiar with my posts knows that I am a critic. Before I start, however, know that I want to see these series thrive and get better. I'm also just going to write tiny paragraphs mainly summarizing these games' faults instead of dissecting it piece by piece.

Let's start with Gears of War. Judgment had a very arcade-like story mode, with the levels being broken down into segments with challenges. The weapons system was altered poorly. Now you didn't need a pistol, as you could just have two shotguns and frag grenades right off the bat. Finally, stripping the Locust as playable characters in multiplayer was just a strange move. I believe Epic wanted to appeal to the Call of Duty audience with this entry, so they casualized it.

Halo 4. Unlike other Halo games, such as 3 and Reach, I cannot remember a single original thing from this game. Each story mission strongly resembled one or more levels from previous Halo games, making Halo 4 seem more like Halo: Greatest Hits. The multiplayer maps were very forgettable. Gameplay feels like 3 mixed with Call of Duty 4. I think 343 simply dropped the ball on this. It was fun, but not the best Halo game.

Skyrim. Before I start, I've completed this game 100% and have a max-level character. It's only in retrospect that I feel disappointed. Bland color scheme. Oversimplified controls with laggy menus and stripped magic system. Awkward map. Ugly textures and people. Forgettable guild missions. Lazy enemy AI. Skyrim, compared to Oblivion, is casualized to the max. That's saying a lot since I'm comparing it to Oblivion.

Bioshock Infinite. Bloom effect to the max. Forced AI companion that I'm aware that I'm supposed to care about. Lackluster ending that ends up being more convoluted and seemingly impossible than it should. Environmental gameplay being too similar to Bioshock 1 (You spend half the game looking in trash cans and containers for loot instead of finding it naturally and looking around the scenery.). This game was great, but I believe that it could have been much better if the developers hadn't stressed Elizabeth so much before the game came out and have you find items around the environment instead of trash cans and barrels, this would be a fantastic game instead of a great one.

Resident Evil 6. Compared to 5 and 4, it's pretty clear that this series has been on a rather steady path down the drain, besides Revelations. While looking beautiful, the gameplay retains no aspects of what made the franchise what it is today, alienating its original fans and as a result, casualizing its audience to the masses and providing a forgettable game.

Dead Space 3. EA doesn't give a shit. Cover system. Co-Op gameplay. Bullets instead of plasma weapons. Wide-open, well lit areas. I can't defend this game like I could the others. An abomination that does everything it can to draw in more money and stray as far as it can from the survival-horror genre and cling to the Call of Duty audience and gore-porn enthusiasts.

I felt inspired to write this article after looking at my games library and noticing that I didn't feel satisfied with these games like I was with the ones before it. Imagine spending $60 on a game that belonged to a franchise that you love and have spent countless hours playing, only to find a lazy, unforgettable experience that shows that the current developers don't care about you, but only want to draw more people in for more money. Wasting my time and money on games like this make me feel empty inside and make me wish I could undo my purchase and get my $60 back so I could spend it elsewhere.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, as Capcom is obviously suffering with only $152 million in the bank. That's not a very high amount of money for a company that size at all. To anybody who read this, is there any series that has disappointed you recently or at any point in the past? Do you disagree with me? I'd love to know and discuss with you.

It figures my first post in months would be a lengthy soapbox rant.

Why hasn't Jeff Williams produced a full version of just Yang's theme? I like the other themes' remixes but... y'know... one minute of a chorus only whets my appetite. I'm sure this is one thing most all of us can agree on.

    • One more update on RWBY, because you obviously care.

Audio's done. Collected all of the clips that I want to use. Currently editing. Hopefully should be up within two weeks due to school starting up tomorrow. This'll be a good one.

      1. Recording sound is a bit rough, considering I am putting each piece of my dialogue into its own file so I can place them wherever, instead of following one long narrative.

      2. Converting videos to usable formats for Windows Movie Maker is sort of a bitch. I don't have access to better editing programs and even if i did, my computer could not run them. That's just kind of how weak my computer really is.

      3. When I do edit, the video lags in the preview, so I never know if what I am saying matches up with the clip I want to present.

      4. Procrastination.

      5. Laziness.

      6. Fire Emblem: Awakening.

      7. Abby.
