It's almost here! I would love to hear about what other RT folks are doing this month. I'm currently outlining several ideas; I figure I'll just pick one when the day actually comes. *grins*

      What's everyone else planning?

This will be the 3rd year in a row that I've participated in National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short. This frenetic, insane, and insanely fun month involves writing a 50,000 word novel. In 30 days. So, no pressure.

I started this - and I've kept doing it - because it is an incredible way to begin to work around your inner critic. There has been a wonderful Ira Glass quotation cycling through my various feeds lately that talks about The Gap. You know the one. The gap between your ability to recognize excellent art, and your ability to create excellent art. I've been in the arts my entire life, and it is to this day immensely frustrating when I feel like my creations don't measure up to where I feel they should be. And 80% of the time, it's just my inner critic, doing a number on my confidence, drawing my abilities into question because I can't yet write like Salman Rushdie. It's foolish, but it's a fact of life.

I've also had this long recurring, but never realized, desire to write a novel. I'm not really sure why that is; my writing genres have always tended towards the poem and the short story. But ever since the first book I wrote when I was five (I believe it was a hand-illustrated tale of My Little Ponies), I have continued to get that itch, despite never finding something that I felt I could stick with long enough. So NaNoWriMo presents me with a twofold challenge: silence my inner critic, and shut up and write that damn novel already.

I would love to talk with any other RT folk who are taking part in this. I just found and joined the NaNoWriMo group on the site, but it doesn't look like there's been a lot of action in a while. If you're interested, join the group and let's get writing!

      Oh man. I'm loving it.

I have a friend on the dev team at Tiny Speck, so I started during the beta testing. It's hard to describe it, except to say that it's adorable, bizarre, oddly smart, and satisfied my enjoyment of some of the cuter, happier games in life (while still making me feel like a better person because I'm no longer playing Farmville... so long, Zynga!). The community is almost uniformly friendly and helpful; it's the first time I've played this sort of game and actually interacted with other people in game. And I love the fact that the players get to build and expand the world as we play; there are skills you can learn for building additional game streets, and areas to populate streets with various flora/fauna/arboreal life. I have a couple of invites, so if any of my RT friends are interested, message me an email address and I'll get you one!

I mean, come on... I just spent the last 20 minutes nibbling pigs, squeezing chickens, and milking butterflies. Are you not intrigued?

Wow. I am so happy that I've brought this into my life.

In other news, having to watch that damn Arby's commercial 12 times has firmed up my resolve to become a site sponsor. So good things are happening everywhere.

    • Oblivion: or, My First Sandbox

      TheMorrigan

I tried starting Oblivion about 3 times.

The first time, I dutifully followed the exact path of the main questline, bypassing any opportunities to explore any of the cities. I stopped playing around Kvatch.

(anyone who has played this game will know that the Kvatch part is veeeeeeeery early in the story)

The second time, I again dutifully followed the path of the questline, but stopped and explored the cities I found along the road. I got a couple of side quests, but didn't want to get sidetracked. I stopped playing... soon after going through an Oblivion gate in Kvatch.

Then I went home for Christmas, and found that my dad's newest gaming obsession was, indeed, Oblivion. I told him that I kept starting it, but then would just stop playing. I didn't really have an explanation. He then told me that he wasn't even paying attention to the main quest. He was just wandering around: following side quests, working his way through guilds, paying no attention whatsoever to where the game had initially told him to go. He explored his way through the game.

Now, I have never played a game that could be termed a "sandbox" game. The games that I've played usually have very linear storylines. Actually, the first time I really explored a game map was when finishing my collections of crosses and flags in Assassin's Creed. But that was all after I finished off the story. This was going to be uncharted territory. So I took a breath, created a new character, and tried it out.

      And it's awesome.

I've always been a fantasy kind of girl; and the ability to simply wander through this type of a world, having adventures, has been a dream for a long time. Well, wandering through a fantasy RPG may be the next best thing. The game's not perfect, certainly, but it's fun and beautiful. And without that feeling of duty driving me along the straight (well, actually, ridiculously winding) road of the main story, I'm free to make my own adventure. I could get used to this!

[Let me start with the obligatory: RIP Steve Jobs. You were quite an individual.]

I know, I know; it's been a long-ass time. So long that Rooster Teeth has updated its look! Yeesh, that's a long time. Lots going on in the life of The Morrigan. Wheeeeee!!

I'm looking to get back into the community (especially since season 9 is going on and it's AWESOME), so you will hopefully be seeing a lot more of me!

Never been there. Never seen the inside. But this blog post by Tim League may be the best thing I've seen in a while.

Thank you, Alamo Draft House, for standing up for all the craaaaazy people who actually want to enjoy the movie, not the random chick's cell screen.

The greatest charity fundraiser of the digital age; a magical place where the wonderful people behind the Canadian sketch comedy group Loading Ready Run play Desert Bus, a video game dreamed up by Penn and Teller that is, quite literally, the most diabolically boring game ever made. The more money you donate, the longer they play. There are live and silent auctions, ridiculous challenges, awesome guests (such as Yahtzee and Russ Pitts from The Escapist, Joel DeYoung of Hothead Games, and Penn himself), and sleep deprivation-related insanity. All proceeds benefit Child's Play, a fantastic game industry charity that, as they say on their site, is "dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 60 hospitals worldwide."

I highly recommend that everyone immediately goes to the Desert Bus site right now and make comedians sad. For the children.

After several long, cold years, I have finally begun transporting my music collection (mostly CDs. 'Cause I'm old school like that) from the state I haven't lived in for 2 1/2 years to the state I've lived in for the past 2. I'm currently listening to the Sweeney Todd soundtrack and beaming in ecstasy.

I sent you an invite to our other movie group, Movie Watchers. We get on every Sunday night at 9 CST every weekend via Netflix. We'll get on around 9 CST and pick the flick as a group and start watching about 9:15. New people get to pick the next week's flick.

Our gamertags are ismokedchu (Dopp) and AllBloodyHail (Zeke), but send us a message on Live or on here to let us know who you are so that we know to accept the random request.

Thanks, its been a tough year for me and pets. My bird died in January and my dog Chewie's been found out to have a heart murmur that could be serious in the future.

As a loyal member in our Movie group, the staff wanted to remind you that if you haven't already put us on your watch list you might want to.

The "Drive-In" is back this season and we'll have something up every other day, so we wouldn't want you to miss out.

For more Bruce Boxleitner action I suggest the 2nd season of Chuck as he plays the father of Captain Awesome! Funny ass show and a must for all geekiness!

Read the disclaimer at the top on the page, but basically the forums are open to all. Just make it movie related or relevant to something we are already talking about. If you want to do something more, be as active as you can on the page and we can draw attention in the news posts to your threads. Then me and the other admins would consider pubing something for you on the main page.

Thanks for taking an interest! smiley0.gif

Thanks for asking and taking an interest first. That's always greatly appreciated. Mostly I wanted to say thank you and welcome to our Screen Gems group. You seem to be into the same things as us so check out the archived stuff, we got plenty of it. And we update regularly so you might want to ad us to your watch list.

I got the link to the Circle and I can't wait to get home and watch them tonight. I know what it's like to put blood sweat and tears into something like that. And to me you don't get better than indie projects. It's where all the best ideas come from. smiley0.gif
