About the turtle: We gave him to the California Turtle and Tortoise people so that they can find him a better home in an area where he actually belongs.

Is an illegal-to-sell-in-California pig-nosed baby snapping turtle. They said that it was probably sold in Chinatown >.> Also, it most likely has been spreading salmonella and it's quite sick. So we're going to help it regain its health and then release it.

My friend is offering me her pet turtle because it was given to her and she didn't really ask for it, so she just keeps it in a large vase filled with water and feeds it lettuce every so often. I want to take it and give it a better home since I love turtles, but it won't do much and I already have a dog, a cat, and a bird. I'm also moving this fall, which might play a part in it.

    • My grandma pt 2

      Then00bEater

So my mom got my grandma this phone that needs to be plugged in for power (of course) and it came with a black charger. My grandma wouldn't accept that, so until we got her a white one, we put batteries in it. My mom told her that she can't throw them away, so she accumulated about 25 batteries in an empty tissue box. Yesterday, my mom noticed they were gone:

Mom: So where are all of the batteries?
Grandma: Oh, I threw them away.
      M: Where?
G: Well, I would take a few and put them in my sweater pocket. Then when I'd go out for a walk and I walked by someone's house who I knew wasn't home, I'd throw a few over the fence.
      M: ... *facepalm*

Is quite funny sometimes. She's hard of hearing and quite old (but she doesn't know how old that is). Here's a conversation between my mom and her.

Mom: Alright, so I'll be there at 10:15.
      Grandma: 9:15
      M: No, 10:15
      G: 9:15.
      M: 10:15.
      G: 9:15.
      M: 10:15!!!
      G: I don't get it.
M: You know what you were just saying?
      G: 9:15.
      M: Add an hour.
      G: 10:15.

      *facepalm*

    • KJPX

I'm sure that Too Human is one of those games that you'd have to sit down with to get past the surface. Whenever I get a chance, I'll have to try it some more. In terms of GH4.. in all honesty, it's a pretty solid game, but I'm not quite sure if it'd be worth a buy. For the vocals, you really don't know how well you do until the end of the song. For the drums, it's pretty standard, but I had noticed a few parts that either had too many unnecessary notes or were missing some completely. It is, however, surprisingly accommodating of the Rock Band drums.. though less so when you're playing on expert. As a guitar game, it's programmed fairly well (if not a little too challenging at points, offset by the insane window of error from GH3). One interesting addition is the open string strum for bass guitar, identified as a bass drum line.

For the full band experience, I'm sure there are going to be more and more games that will attempt to copy the Rock Band formula and put their own spin on it, and if GH4 is of any indication, they will fail it. Sure, each member has their own multiplier, performance meter, and can activate their star power independently of others, but star power is still in a collective pool like the past couple of GH games. Furthermore, star power only affects whoever activated it. So, say that Johnathan Petrucci and Michael Portnoy are playing a song in GH4:

Portnoy: So, John, why did you choose the Michael Jackson song? The drum part's boring..

Petrucci: 'cause Eddie Van Halen plays this wicked awesome solo in it, and I'm-a totally nail it with my eyes closed!

      Portnoy: Freaking weirdo..

      *guitar solo*

Portnoy: Dude, open your eyes; we're about to fail!

Petrucci: Crap crap crap!! I need star power!!! The fretting on this game doesn't make any sense!!!1

Portnoy: Well, if you didn't keep using our star power on yourself, then maybe this wouldn't..

      *fail*

Portnoy: ..have happened. *sigh* I'm telling Myung you're on time out.

Okay, so you can't save your bandmates, as you've seen. In fact, there's very little indication of if you're failing or not. The band's rock meter is pretty small, and don't even get me started on the individual rock meters. Difference is, even if your own rock meter is at 0, you can still play and bring it back up, but every missed note until you do brings down the band's meter substantially.

The setlist is 25% derived from Rock Band. The remaining 75% is good, but not quite there. There are a few good "mainstream casual party songs," like Beat It, Hotel California, and What I've Done, perfect for any get-together with people from all ranges of expertise and music exposure. But the other side of the coin, the "interesting, lesser known songs for the hardcore players and music lovers," is a little lax. True, there are a few gems, like DT's Pull Me Under, Muse's Assassin, Hendrix's Purple Haze, and such, but overall, RedOctane has widely missed the mark. Thankfully, Van Halen's Hot for Teacher is both a great party song and a challenge, but there aren't many. Also, while it's good that this game isn't rife with mainstream songs, not all mainstream songs are bad, whilest (and RedOctane proves this) not all lesser known songs are good.

There is a bit of a remedy, found in the song creator. There are two modes, the simple "Good luck making anything good" mode, and the advanced "Hope you know how GarageBand and FL Studio work" mode. The advanced is really the best way to make what comes into your head or to re-create a song you've always wanted to try, but it is a tedious chore. You make the conscious decision as to what note goes where and to which button it is mapped. Once you get the rhythm down for it, it's not so bad, and you can layer up to 5 instruments (no vocals, due to licensing and possible misconduct issues) to make something that sounds fairly decent. Still, your primary guitarist can only play either lead, rhythm, or keyboard, not a mix, and apparently, RedOctane must feel that neither lead/bass guitarists nor keyboardists must ever have to play chords, while the rhythm guitarist will never play anything BUT chords, so it's a little constricting at times.

It's not that I have a low opinion of this game, but maybe I've been a little spoiled by Rock Band. That is a game where the notes and the songs are carefully considered with each instrument equally in mind. And I'm sure you can agree that Rock Band's setlist rocks that much harder.

    • KJPX

I've been okay, all things considered. Being away from here has been a help, but I still miss it. Are you enjoying Too Human? I played the demo; thought it was pretty sweet.. kind of a Devil May Cry with more of an RPG emphasis and based upon Norse mythology, right? Not many games have done the Norse thing, and I like how they contemporize it. I may, one day, pick it up for myself, but with all these fall releases, it's sorta being pushed on the backburner for awhile. Have you gotten a chance to play Guitar Hero 4 yet?

I hear ya. All three are ones I've heard more than my fair share of times, but I was certainly happy that Pretty Fly for a White Guy was in there. I think it had to do with the fact that it's so similar to Come Out and Play. There are other ones I would have preferred, but ah well, I think they're still good.

In terms of the other songs, I think they had some pretty good picks. All Right Now and Bad to the Bone are classics, and personally, I don't think any rock 'n' roll library should be complete without George Thorogood, Bob Seger, or the Beatles. Now this is something I find funny, I really don't like Against Me!, but the song they have for download actually isn't that bad, in my opinion; whereas I've always liked Static-X quite a bit, but I feel there are far better songs to use than Push It. I know I've said this before, when talking about Rush's The Trees, but the difference is, The Trees has really grown on me (no pun intended), and while it will never be a favorite of mine, per se, I can see why they used it. It's actually been refreshing to hear one that hasn't gotten so much airtime on the radio, and it's a good song, even so.

I've heard that next week is Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood album..

Speaking of The Offspring, did you see their 3 new tracks for download?

    • KJPX

What it really comes down to.. if there's a hard part, I take it through practice mode.. starting on the slowest and working my way up. It helped me get The Offspring's Hammerhead, and I'm currently doing it for YYZ and Panic Attack. Yeah, I noticed that our other band members were DT-looking. I didn't know it that was just coincidence or what, but now I just realized how you can do that. That's pretty cool smiley6.gif

And don't feel bad. As you've seen, I still have that trouble spot on Don't Fear the Reaper. I can usually make it through just fine, but every now and then, I may mess up a bit, and while trying to recover, it may be too late, so I know what you mean. That song had me floored for the longest time, but after working at it, I've been able to beat it (pretty) consistently. Like with the real instrument counterparts, all it really takes is practice.

That was a lot of fun; we'll have to do that again. I'll catch you later on.

Nah, they're a bit too light for my tastes. I use my first-ever set of sticks I had received in 5th grade. They've lasted me this long, and I consider them my lucky set. I would go for something a little heavier, so that even after the intense playing that will inevitably destroy your drum set, you've got something that'll register.

    • KJPX

In my opinion, the beat trainer serves two purposes: To familiarize you with the basics that songs will build upon and to work up your sense of rhythm. Pretty much, it's a Godsend when you're starting out to keep afloat in the songs. However, only by playing the songs will you learn their nuances.

Yeah, that is, for the most part, why things had taken so long. After all, they didn't want it to show up on a random setlist if there were a singer present. Plus, I guess they would have adjusted which score quotas yield which amount of stars.. or something like that.

    • KJPX

It is pretty awesome. Any Rush fan shouldn't be without, and those who appreciate contemporary prog (Dream Theater being a stellar example of contemporary prog metal) are urged to get it. The reason it took them so long to bring this out is because of programming the one all-instrumental track into there.

So I got the Moving Pictures DLC yesterday.. one of the greatest examples of 1980s progressive rock ever smiley1.gif As I've said, Portnoy cited Peart as quite possibly his biggest influence, and that comes out in some of these songs.
