The first thing I have to say is a preemptive apology, should the remainder of this journal be seemingly boasting on my part. I assure you it is not the intention.

The second thing is my need to say how unbelievably proud I am of my dad today. As of 10 am GMT 10/03/2015 my dad officially took over in his new job as a Vice Admiral, and the Second Sea Lord in the Royal Navy. This is not only the highest rank possible for a non warfare officer, but as an engineer he is the first from his branch ever to attain this rank. As the name implies he is the second highest officer in the Royal Navy. The specifics of what the job involves is something I am unsure about. I do, however, know that among other things this makes him admiral in charge of HMS Victory, and gains, for the duration of his posting, a house that is one of the most unnecessarily over sized buildings I have ever seen.

There are no words of how proud I am of him, and how glad I am that he is my father.

we re-entered the Piracy area yesterday, so back to standing on the bridge looking for tiny skiffs, filled with heavily armed vagabonds. now however we have the addition of heavy seas and strong winds. Spotting the little Fuckers will be nearly impossible. feels like i'm a baby when i go to sleep though, get rocked from side to side as i doze off.

They are all Cheesey Over publicised, Feel good bollocks.

Fuck you Christmas, its early June, and somehow you continue to piss me off.

    • Ahoy Update number 6: A second Asian run Ashore

      TomWoodcock

so following the events of the last journal, the Second Mate convinced me to go for a run ashore with him. which was fair enough, got in the taxi and the first place he wanted to go was....... a Whore House... so after we arrived i spent the following 20 mins sat on the side of a shady ass shit alley waiting for him to (for want of a better term) to finish up. after which we went to a local massage parlour and spent an hour getting the living shit beaten out of my by a tiny Chinese lady, whom i had paid for the privilege of this beating. following this we decided that we needed to recover from this and went to KFC and got an order for about 5 of the officers on board and us for about $20 ( man china is so fucking cheap) got some DVDs and headed back to the ship. a surprisingly fun run ashore despite everything, and well worth a journal

    • Ahoy Update number 5: Longest Journey Ever/ Singapore Meetup

      TomWoodcock

on the 4/4/2014 at approximately 0800 i left my hope to join the Mary Maersk, 56 Days, 11hrs later, i met up with @lynne1118 and @shinny for a few hrs of drinking, chattter and wandering around. i hear-by claim the victory for longest time travelling to a meetup ever. i cannot corroborate it but i am fairly sure.

it was great to get off ship and meet the guys, especially due to how far away they live. we failed to take any group photos. but it was great none the less.

I now need to sleep as i have work in 8 hrs.

      Ciao
      Tom

    • Ahoy Update number 4: Pirates

      TomWoodcock

At 0300 GMT on the 06/05/2014 ( 05/06/2014 for the Americans out there), i will be entering a HRA, or High Risk Area for the first time in my life. as you are all no doubt aware, there are quite a lot of pirates operating around the coast of somalia, and that's where i am headed. i am not over worried, no ship even close to the size of Mary Maersk has ever been taken, however no point taking risks, so we have now blacked out the ship, locked the doors, and cannot go out on deck without the Captains express permission. so this is me, for the next week at least, locked inside a giant steel ship, hoping that we don't meet any of the locals, and that none decide to stay.

    • Ahoy Update number 3: Nautical terms

      TomWoodcock

This is something that i have thought about for quite some time now, it's not the first time i have considered writing this journal, but as i am currently at sea it seemed to be the best time to do it.
i come from a military and a nautical family and due to this i have always had a large maritime input on my life, this has never had a great effect on me, merely meaning that in many cases i have picked up and readily use Nautical terms, and military slang that i have picked up and adopted over the years. me proclaiming an intent to "Foxtrot Oscar" when i am about to leave is not uncommon. i have always known my port from my starboard, and for a short while as a kid i knew them better than left and right, but i digress.
the real purpose of this journal is a question out to any of you lovely people who have been dedicated enough to read another of my rambling essays.
How many of you know, or are aware of the nautical terms in common use, or can give examples of ones not often used in the civilian population?

An example would be that i am curious to know how many of you are aware of the origins of the term "reaching the bitter end"
For bonus points i am curious how many of you understand why port and starboard were coloured so specifically earlier in this journal, or the joke by which i did so?

until next time, Fair Winds and Following Seas (yes its a nautical term smiley8.gif )

    • Ahoy update number 2: Solid Ground

      TomWoodcock

so i just got back from my run ashore in Bremehaven, which gave me the opportunity to get myself some food and drink, which is a surprising luxury on board. i also managed to get a call in with a Number of the LBF guys who happened to be on at the time @Killy23 @AnneLydolf @JacobPCGamin @Spoderman22 @LUCASthe3RDj @DerekT. and am now ashore and back in my cabin, and will not be likely to be able to touch shore again for the next month, as the next ports are not accessible for any runs ashore.

so with this i say goodbye to what we all take for granted, for the next month, goodbye solid ground, and stable surfaces, i will see you again in Asia.

so until next time, Fair Winds and Following seas

What's with the number of Asian crew members in the lower echelons? Cheap labour costs or something else?

      Hey man sweet job like.

How did you get into that. I'm currently dicking about in aviation but am getting severely disillusioned and thinking of switching to some other form of transport.

ahh fair enough, advancement is pretty good in the merchant navy, training takes about 3 years tho

      • TacoPowerPhD

The lack of career advancement basically. I started off doing things I didn't want to do with the promise that it would lead to better things and that hasn't happened. I'm just stuck in an office effectively doing admin with a slight flavouring of aircraft.

its kinda easy to be honest, i assume it will work the same way in america. basically you send off a CV to relevant companies, there are agencies or some companies you apply to directly. then if they like you, you go to interview and if they then take you on they will send you to a maritime college. can i ask though what caused you to be disillusioned with aviation... because this definatly isn't for everyone, it involves extended period away from home with little to no contact in some cases. some companies have no drinking policies as well.
