I would never consider myself to be an "early adopter", if anything I'm as late to the party as anyone; by that I mean that, when it comes to electronics, or even software, I'm usually the last one aboard the bandwagon. This also applies to just about any fad, trend or what have you in terms of pop culture. I wouldn't say that I do it directly or even rather indirectly, which sounds confusing I know, but for whatever reason my hand is usually as far from the pulse of the general consensus as possible.

I think the best instance of this would be video games.

I grew up playing the hell out of my NES but when SNES came out my parents didn't buy it for me because they figured that the NES was fine enough as is, why did I need an SNES? Need less to say, I missed the 16-bit era. Sure, I went over friend's houses and cousins who owned it, as well as the Sega Genesis, but for the most part I had no involvement with it, although it always intrigued me as to why my parents constantly bought me a new hand held; like just about every version of the Gameboy, as well as the Game Gear, but never a new console.

Any way, the next new system that I ended up owning was the Nintendo 64; a year or two after it had been released. This isn't to say that I didn't get to enjoy it, as I was able to play some games that didn't get released until after I got the system, but still, I wasn't on the cusp of when it came out and therefore I did miss a few games or two that flew under my "after the fact" radar. Case in point: Anyone that ever owned a Nintendo 64 will always remember playing Super Mario 64, but I never owned it. I played it, sure, but I never owned it when it first came out and by the time I had an Nintendo 64, Super Mario 64 didn't matter to me anymore. I was too busy playing GoldenEye, Ocarina of Time and No Mercy to really pay attention.

The next console that really flew past me was the Sony Playstation. I never owned it when it first came out and, by the time I did eventually own it, it was during the dying days when the Playstation 2 was already announced to come out just the next year or two; therefore, I didn't get much playtime and/or use of it in terms of games that are well known for the system. Case in point: Final Fantasy 7 is considered one of the greatest games of all time, as well as one of the best Final Fantasy games of all time plus one of the best Playstation games; mostly because it's one of the first games many early owners of the Playstation owned and played.

Not me. Although, ironically, it was another Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy 8) that got me to buy a Playstation in the end. To that end, it's one of MY favorite games of all time, as well as my favorite Final Fantasy game. Of course, being such a late owner of the Playstation, I missed out on a lot of classic franchises that started on the system; such as Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal, etc. The first Resident Evil game that I ever played, actually, was Resident Evil 3. While I will say that I am a fan of the franchise, and have played every game since 3, I have not played through the first or second game all the way through; maybe one day... maybe one day I'll actually beat Final Fantasy 8, too... >.<

The only systems that I was actually an early adopter for was the Playstation 2 and the Gamecube; which is actually an interesting story. I remember when I got the Gamecube, I said, "I need a game!" but the only two games that interested me was "Super Smash Brothers Melee" and "Eternal Darkness". I've never actually been that great at fighting games, but I do enjoy games that scare the shit out of me (which, ironically, is the actual point of this journal entry, and I'm getting there; slowly) so I picked "Eternal Darkness". I'm kind of glad that I did because "Eternal Darkness" was a damn good game that, if you haven't played it, I recommend.

The next system that I ended up buying was the XBOX 360, two years after it was released. I never owned the original XBOX so, again, I missed out on a few franchises that made their start there; most specifically, Halo. I never played Halo. I never played Halo 2. Ironically, the way I got my XBOX 360 was because of Halo 3. One of my friends XBOX 360 red-ringed on him a week before Halo 3 came out and he sent it to Microsoft to get fixed but knowing it wouldn't be back in time to play the game, my friend bought a whole new XBOX 360 in the meantime. When he got his old XBOX 360 back, he was stuck with two XBOXs. Knowing that I was in the market for one, he sold me his old one.

Anyway, the point of this journal: I've started playing a few games lately that are "old" in terms of they've been out for quite some time and, chances are, everyone has already played them while they are "new" to me in the sense that I'm now just playing them. Assassin's Creed is one such game that I've been playing lately, while another example would be "Call of Duty 4" which I didn't actually play until maybe a few months before "Modern Warfare 2" came out. I also didn't get around to playing "Oblivion" until last year. So yeah, I just got done playing about an hour or two of "Dead Space" and, man, do I love it. Seriously.

It's like I said before, I like games that can scare the shit out of me. Weird, I know, but it's true. Growing up as someone that loved horror movies, I can honestly say that I got desensitized to a point where horror movies just don't give me that pump of adrenaline that I'm looking for anymore. I guess it stems from the fact that, really, what is there to fear? When it comes to a video game, while I know it's just as fake as a movie, I am controlling the action and, therefore, I can get scared by whatever happens because it directly affects me, see? That's my reasoning, at least.

(I'm going to try and keep this one short, hence why it will be mostly bullet points of quick events that come to mind. I won't go into my weekend detail by detail, just key points. Truth be told, I wasn't originally going to write up a journal about my time in RvBTO, but a dream last night convinced me otherwise.)

smiley9.gif Last year was my first RvBTO, with this year being my second round at such an event (obviously), and while the first year was fun I admit that I was a bit of an emotional wreck. I am a very shy person by nature and, during RvBTO last year, I tended to be very distant and kept to myself. This isn't to say that I didn't have a fun time, but there was always this nagging feeling that there had to be more to it than I was letting myself enjoy.

This year, for whatever reason, I felt better. I had more confidence. I wasn't afraid to talk to people. I wasn't scared, or shy, I tended to be all right more or less. This isn't to say that I didn't fully recover from last year. After all, old habits die hard and the ghosts of the past still lingered. There were times when I still felt lost, alone and scared while surrounded by hundreds of people. Anxious as well as nervous. Yet, over all, I did better than I had the year before; this, I know. That said, I look forward to next year just as much as I did this year, if not more.

smiley9.gif That said, I feel as though my involvement in a lot of things is lacking. Call it a boost of confidence, or a reaffirming of what I should have already known, but I felt welcomed at TO. At the first RvBTO, I was the first time that I met a lot of people IRL as well as the first time I met a lot of new people that I hadn't known before. If anything, the first RvBTO I attended was simply a launching point, in a way. This RvBTO, the second, was that landing which brought me back to solid ground. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I like the way it sounds.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that RvBTO is a place where I'm constantly able to both make friends and solidify previous relationships. It's an event for the community to come together, no? Isn't that the point? I believe so, and like the first time this time was a great time for me to come together with friends I had made between the first and second RvBTO; and to meet them in person for the first time. Some I only briefly saw over the weekend, and some I held long conversations with; but, either way, I consider them friends.

smiley9.gif It was great to get to finally meet the Wonder Twins, Sarah and Manda, both of whom I've gotten to know better via RTMNs and who's company was both an honor and a privilege to have during the weekend. Seriously, those two girls can have all my babies. ALL OF THEMS.

smiley9.gif One of the more interesting times over the weekend was a conversation that I had with Moose inside of a Tim Hortons for about an hour. I say interesting because as hectic as RvBTO can get sometimes, it's often hard to sit down, relax and have a genuine one on one discussion with someone for any length of time. While I won't go into detail of what we discussed, just know that it was a real treat to be able to kick back with such an awesome guy and pick each others brains for awhile. It's something I really appreciate and will never forget.

smiley9.gif Speaking of someone that I won't ever forget, getting to meet Dan was a real treat and not just because he's from across the pond. It was often funny how the topic of accents came up over the weekend. Sure, it's easy to pick on the guy for having a suave English accent, just as much as it might be myself for having a very subtle Boston accent, but really, Dan is the man. Seriously. I will never forget his performances during the open mic night on Saturday. He tore the place down. I'm still smiling now as I remember how, during his acoustic rendition of Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills", Roadblock and I accidentally broke a glass that fell off a table as we played the drums on said table. Epic.

smiley9.gif Also, talking about being appreciative before, I want to give a huge shout out to Joe and the rest of the RvBTO crew. I know some things didn't work out, and some things had to be changed last minute, but you guys rolled with the punches and came out as champions. Joe, especially, I want to thank because I spent the weekend at his apartment that he shares with Heather along with Zak and RocketWhore. Truth be told, I never talked to Joe much before this RvBTO, never met him or anything, but I guess that's just the power of RvBTO; meeting new people. You're an awesome guy, Joe, and keep on keeping on with your guitar, too! You ruled just as hard.

smiley9.gif Mentioning Heather previously, thanks again for letting me stay with you and for everything that entailed as far as putting up with me all weekend! I hope you enjoy those MST3K DVDs! I feel like I owe you so much more in the end, especially because I ran out of money near the end of the trip and you and Zak had to pay for my broke ass. None the less, like I said, you ever come out my way than, well, I'll treat you right. Seriously. You have no idea how much I appreciate everything that you did for me that weekend. You're WONDERFUL.

smiley9.gif Zak, thanks for making sure I didn't miss my flight! I'll never doubt you, bro, but I will admit that my heart was pounding the closer the clock got to five o'clock! lol Seriously though, thank you for everything over the weekend; you're TERRIFIC!

smiley9.gif Jen, I hope you had a Happy Birthday on Friday! I know I had fun, and it was great to be able to celebrate along with you, as well as go to Wonderland on Monday, as per the yearly tradition we seem to have started along with Deck Pizza; all I can say is, "WOW!"

(Continued in comments, because this is totally not short anymore...)

I'm definitely most bummed about missing the RTMN stuff at TO because I was really really looking forward to it. Shit fucking sucks.

But YES, we will make something happen while you're in nyc. What are you here for? At the very least we'll have to do lunch.

Thanks, man! I tried my best to complete the list but a few bits of information did fall through the cracks while doing my research. You don't happen to know what the third movie was during your Triple Horror Movie Feature on October 26th, 2009 was, do you? You said it was a Japanese horror/comedy, I think, and you had a poster imaged of it right after but it's since disappeared, so I have no idea. If you can't remember, no worries.
