Ugh, the previous treatment was not effective enough. Right now I'm getting a chemo to 'buy time' so to speak while we get the clearance to try a non FDA approved drug. I'll be doing some good there because companies trying to develop new drugs need trials, successful or not, to gather data and help with approval or development. Should be starting that in a few weeks. It'll be an IV drip once a week, I'll come out to Omaha to get it and then go home, so at least I won't be stuck out here.

We are still hopeful, anything can happen when dealing with a disease like this. It's just hard to keep motivated when you are constantly slapped back to square one. So nothing very eventful for the next few weeks until we try the new stuff it seems.

      Meow.

Tomorrow I will get a bone marrow biopsy to determine how much cancerous material there is in my marrow. The docs will look at it and I will talk to them on Thursday. If it's low enough, we will go ahead with the transplant in the next few days. If it's too high then it might be the end of the road unless the docs have some new ideas.

I have been pretty sore over the last week, which for me is a telltale sign that the cancer is coming back. However, I haven't been in as much pain as in the past, which hopefully means that if it's coming back it's being slow about it. I'm hoping that's the case, but in the past the leukemia has come back VERY quickly and very aggressively. The pain isn't a big deal to me. I've been through some of the most painful procedures possible in this journey. Stuff that makes a broken bone seem like a scrape. A few achy muscles aren't holding me back.

      Wish me luck!

    • Update.

      TuRbOlAg

Well, still doing alright. I know I haven't been updating this much at all but that's only because I really don't know who even read it anymore! =P

Well, it's been six months since I was diagnosed with Leukemia. Progress has been made, and lost just as quickly. Trying all of the 'normal' treatments haven't gotten the results we need for me to get a bone marrow transplant and hopefully rid myself of this disease. My doctors have me on a treatment that is not exactly experimental, but it's not commonly done either. However they believe it may be the only shot I have.

The problem is that all of the normal treatments eliminate your bone marrow, the source of your blood cells and the leukemia cells. If things go well your normal cells regrow faster than the cancer cells and you have a window of opportunity to get a transplant. With me, the cancer has grown back just as fast as my normal cells which doesn't give me any window. For this treatment they are giving me a 'booster' shot so to speak, while we wait to see how the cells grow back. It has been used in childrens treatment, but not so much in adults. That being the case there really isn't a dosage regiment, which is why this treatment is uncommon.

Now how it works is this: Every cell in your body needs fuel, called asparaginate. All normal body cells can produce this enzyme on their own. Cancer cells cannot. The booster shot is called asparaginese, which brakes down the enzyme the cells use for fuel, so the cancer cells eventually die off. Problem is, the enzyme gets broken down into other chemicals, one of them being ammonia. If there is too much ammonia then there can be major problems. Not to mention that the drug itself can cause severe allergic reactions. I do not have any allergies that I am aware of, and I hope I can keep it that way and not have a problem with this drug.

As far as I understand, this is it. If it works, it works. If not, well, I have months to live at best. I haven't discussed any experimental treatments with my docs yet, but they have not mentioned any either which makes me wonder if there is even anything available.

I just, I don't know. It sucks. It's been an emotional rollercoaster. I have asked many times "Why me? What the hell did I do?" But then I always remember the amount of suffering in this world. Every day I hear about someone in the news that died in a fire or a drunk car accident. How is that any different? Those people have their lives taken from them in the blink of an eye. I have had a fighting chance. Is any one more of a tragedy than the other?

Truly I have a great life, very fortunate. A family that is big, nearby and has unconditional love for each other. Friends that have been extraordinary with their support. Doctors and staff that have done their best to help me. Of course I don't want to die, but most of all I don't want to bring that pain on those who love me. My parents and siblings that have done so much for me, my friends that have shown so much support. I just don't want to cause that pain to the ones I love. I still have hopes for this treatment, it's been going well so far, but I really need a break to stay on this planet.

I'll probably be updating more now because it seems like I am getting to the end of the rat race, for better or worse. Hopefully things will work in my favor for once and I can be on my way to being healthy again.

      I'll keep you posted.

    • TRON Legacy

      TuRbOlAg

      Holy shit!

Now lemme give you a taste of how I see movies. I go to be entertained. Meaning that even if the movie is sub-par, I go in with an attitude of "I'm going to enjoy this because I am paying for it." I'm not one of those people who walks out of a good movie trying to come up with reasons that it sucked. That pisses me off, and if you are one of said moviegoers, then I pity you.

Now that being said, TRON Legacy is pretty damn awesome. Good original story, good acting, great music (Entire score done by Daft Punk. \m/ (0,0) \m/ Rawk on.) awesome visuals, great action, it's really very well put together. Perhaps not film of the year, but I would say Sci-Fi film of the year. Or next year, whatever. =P

One thing I have to say though, if you have the option to see it in IMAX, DO IT. Totally worth the extra money. The 3D was pretty good and not overwhelming, but the best part was the SOUND. Anyone who frequent IMAX knows that they have one of the most bad-ass sound systems available. And holy shit, TRON makes use of every single watt of power. I am a firm believer that action movies need to be loud. Even ear splitting at times, because that's the point right? When there is an explosion so loud you almost have to cover your ears, you really get the immersion factor. At least I do.

Now in TRON when you first see one of these beasts:

      tron_legacy_recognizer.jpg

The bass is so loud you can feel the pressure waves in your lungs. It is truly awe inspiring, and with the IMAX screen and 3D I actually felt like that thing was hovering right over me. It was insane.

The visuals were excellent, although the blue/orange color everything has on the grid does get a little old. Very interesting usage of 3D at times, like seeing a layer of code in front of the rest of the scene. It's subtle, but effective, and not once did I feel it was too much or gimmicky. The parts of the TRON shot in the real world aren't in 3D anyways, so not even the whole movie gets the 3D treatment which helps it keep on an acceptable level. Oh, and the scene where Sam transports from earth to the Grid? Awesome.

There were a few moments where you could see what was going to happen, but that's fine. Not every movie needs a bunch of stupid twists and turns to make it interesting, and TRON definitely doesn't. All in all if you are entertained by good action scenes set to daft punk music along with a good story that doesn't slow down for a minute, TRON is an excellent choice. Go see.

If you don't watch The Daily Show and/or The Colbert Report, well first off what is wrong with you?

Secondly you really need to start watching now. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have announced opposing, yet truly unified marches protesting the insane hyperactive way some of our fellow Americans have been acting lately. You know, the ones that burn korans, call our presidents Nazi's and claim 9/11 conspiracies.

While Colbert's march is a little more of a parody to 'oppose' Stewart, they both are meant to voice what most of us think when we watch the news cover the extremist side of America, which is:

      TAKE IT DOWN A NOTCH.

      Or five.

Anyways, If I were in the area, I would totally be going. Problem is that's a 15+ hour drive for me, not to mention the little problem that is my best friend's wedding on the same date. =P

Ugh. Yeah. So I have cancer. I have been in the hospital the last week and finally got my hands on my sanitized (read: saran wrapped) laptop.

Details: It's called Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Basically I have cancerous cells in my lymphatic system as well as my bloodstream. It's life threatening, but very treatable and survivable. So I guess I lucked out if you can call getting a lesser cancer lucking out. I've been getting radiation for the last few days and have been taking it very very well. No nausea yet, still feeling strong and able to move well. Just tired of sitting in a damned bed all day, but hey, shark week amirite?

I've been pretty upbeat about the whole thing but what are you gonna do you know? Not like complaining about it will make it go away. Just hold on for the ride.

My friends and family have barely let me out of their sights all week. Nice to see how many people I have effected in my life. People from college 4 hours away have come to see me, I've gotten letters from foreign exchange students, family members from across the country.

Don't really know what else to say about it. Yeah, it blows, and yeah, I'm scared. Like I said all I can do is hang on for the ride. Figure I ought to post this in case some peoples were wondering where I might have run off to.

That's what my brother was saying. We don't have it for 360 (yet) but he suspected that the game play on the 360 would be very similar between both games.

I have Mass Effect for 360 and played through several times. I have a level 60 character saved on my 360 and have maxed out everything. Looks like I'll have to get it for 360 and see how much better it is.

Course, I'll probably have to go out and get an Elite 360 first. My 5 year old 360 is starting to show its age. Many games have problems loading and its starting to slow down quite a bit. I want to get Halo: Reach when it comes out and I don't think my old 360 would be up to playing it. That, and actually being able to use an HDMI input on our TV would be nice. We bought an HDTV, it would be nice to use it as one.

I figured out what the issue was. I was calculating it at 24 psi at 7k rpm. So, that would explain the reason its so far off the map.

    • burgundy

Is it? I haven't looked at the radar for a couple of hours. But I did notice there was a tornado up by Galena about 7pm, and that storm group was moving due south down the river. Its very rare that storms move due south, especially over the big river.

The way I track the storms is on weatherunderground.com. I use the WUNDERMAP on the left side of the screen. Its awesome. You can set it up a tone of different ways.

It looks as if most of it is going south of me, but hammering you.

Yeah, I am using HPTuners, which is HUGE in the LS1 community, and in the LNF (my motor) community it is the only tuning software released to the public. Some private tuners have written their own tuning software, but HPTuners is the most advanced thus far.

Well, when i data log, it shows me degrees, but I think it is measuring something different, because surely the computer is not pulling 42* of timing advance! Lol. See, my ECM is a bit different than normal... it is all air based, so I change the amount of air the engine takes in, and the computer does the rest (for the most part). I can change stuff, by skewing how much the computer changes things, at least, this is how i understand it.

    • burgundy

Well, i can tune it, but the computer is going to do what it thinks is safe in the end. Computer is stupid smart.

As for values, i couldn't tell you the degrees. It doesn't measure it in degrees... it measures it in something i dont really know what the unit is.

    • burgundy

It really varies on the timing. The computer will pull it and add it as necessary.

I'd suggest a strut tower crossmember if you don't already have one. Really helps in the turns and launches. Not too expensive either.

Actually, it doesn't help as much as you would think. It doesn't help in launching, it only provides structural integrity. Which, if I tighten the front end up any more, will promote understeer. FWD cars don't need any more understeer.

The biggest thing for me is motor and trans mounts, which will be on their way soon. Then, of course, more rubber on the ground.
