Happy belated birthday Geoff smiley11.gif Just got back from vacation and though I had my laptop, the last couple days were spent in the Appalachian Mountains and without internet. So, yeah, Happy Birthday man!

    • Gus got me thinking...

A comment I made on one of Gus's threads got me thinking about San Antonio. I was stationed there for a short time when I was in the Army. I remember the heat and humidity combining to make a permanent white stain on my BDUs (my camouflaged uniform) from the starch seeping out with my excess of sweat. It was always intensely bright during the day and the nights were usually clear and gorgeous. I loved the evenings. I would often go to the Hacienda on post, or downtown. My favorite place downtown was a pub called Durty Nelly's Irish Pub. Every Saturday night you could find me there drinking Guiness and yelling Irish drinking tunes at the top of my lungs along with the wonderful piano player they had. Most of the pub's patrons would sing along so that you could find your way there by the sound, though it was right on the Riverwalk. During the day you could find me eating Bourbon Chicken from one of the asian food restaurants in the food court of the Rivercenter Mall. I would take my food outside to the tables lining the river's lagoon, sit near the water, and enjoy a good meal while relaxing to the music of Andean Symphony (I think they are Andean Fusion now).

Of course, there was also the down-side of having to run several miles every morning in the heat, wearing chemical gear/gas mask for training when it was 110 degrees, which makes it more like 130 degrees in that suit, me sleeping with a scorpion, and cockroaches that could carry you away (I have yet to see those in Cleveland!). But, I sure did love my time there. smiley12.gif

But yeah, for three months I didn't see rain, and barely a cloud in the sky; it was borderline depressing (you have to have storms from time to time smiley13.gif !)

Airborne. All the way. Strike Hold! We are the 82nd Airborne, and this is as far as the bastards are going.
