    • Geraldo Rivera has Got to Go!!!

      WALDO

May be it is more an indictment of journalism today, but I think it is time for Geraldo to go! It used to be that journalism had a responsability to report the news. A key part of that is veryfying facts before reporting them, however, it seems that the urge to be the first has thrown even that responsability to the sidelines which lead to the irresponsible reporting of the condition of the trapped miners in W. Virginia. Appologies sometimes just aren't enough and though remorse should be a part of all mistakes one makes, remorse does not mitigate the action taken and the cosequences must be suffered.
The fact of the matter is that Rivera has a history of poor judgement and has demonstrated his lack of journalistic value. It was not too long ago that he was kicked out of Iraq for broadcasting troop movements. This unrestricted broadcast gave possibly valuable information to the enemy and put our soldiers' lives unnecessarily at risk.
But let us not forget Geraldo's leap into the limelight with his ill-fated documentary on the excavation of Capone's Vault. Does anyone remember this fiasco? Everything he said would be there was not, just as what he said was buried in W. Virginia was not. His irresponsible reporting gave false hope and relief to numerous families that were going through a rough enough time in their lives without his help. Had he only bothered to verify his facts before reporting them, as a responsible journalist would have, a lot less grief would have been suffered by the families of those fallen miners in W. Virginia.
My heart goes out to the families in W. Virgina who lost their loved ones. As a soldier, I understand the worry that they went through everyday of their lives as their loved ones went off to work in a dangerous occupation that keeps our country moving. But the poor reporting on the tragedy does not mitigate the fact that the managemnet of the mine needs to be investigted for their part in this horrendous ordeal. Had they been held accountable for their part, when they should have been, this is an issue I would not be discussing with you all today.
I harken back to the reporting of the Kennedy asassination in Dallas, NOV of 1963. Peter Jennings, then a field correspondent, reported the asassination to Kronkite who advised that this was ONLY the report from the field, but that the report had to be verified. This was not the stance taken by the Fox News staff and this is an indictment of journalism today (Fair and Balnced in Deed!). Too many young minds full of mush, enter journalism to change the world. They miss the real purpose of journalism and that is to report on the changes in the world. If you want to change it, look to politics.

    • Sott Peterson

Everyone seems to be talking about it. More importantly, everyone seems excited the Scott not only got convicted, but yesterday was sentenced to death. Regardless of whether or not you believe in the death penalty, or even what you believe about capital punishment's value as a deterrent, there is one point you CANNOT argue; it IS an effective elimination of repeat offenses.
My hat is off to the prosecution team. They not only won a murder conviction and a death sentence on purely circumstantial evidence (arguable grounds for and appeal on at least the sentence), but won a murder conviction for an unborn child. In arguably one of the most leftist states in the union (second to the People's Republics of Maryland and New York) they have now set a presidence that an unborn child is still a human being and will have to deal with the ramifications of this decision in abortion law.
Do not misunderstand me here. I aggree with the defense attourney's arguments that Peterson is a "cad". What kind of man engages in pillow-talk with his misstress durring a vigil for his missing wife? Before the body is even found, what kind of man remodels the nursery of their unborn child into an exercise room and trades in their family car for a new boat and truck? And what kind of man, when he finds out he is the primary suspect in the case after the body is found, would be caught with a drasticly changed appearance (dyed hair and goatee) and $10K in his pocket trying to cross the border into Mexico?
By actions alone, Peterson himself convinced everyone of his guilt. But what amazes me more than anything else is that only in California could a jury convict and sentence a man to death on purely circumstantial eveidence, and on the other hand aqquit another when there was so much damning DNA AND circumstantial evidence--ie. OJ Simpson.
For those of you who do not support the death penalty, all is not lost. The state of California has 650 inmates on deathrow at its various institutions and since 1979 has only executed 10. Charles Manson is still alive. Peterson, regardles of how big a "cad" he may be, has a greater chance od dieing a natural death that he does one at the hands of the state. It is just too bad for the rest of us he did not commit his crime in Texas... we would have hung him!!!

    • WALDO 2.0 is home!!!

Released from the hospital just this morning, Waldo 2.0 is home now, but on more monitors it seems than she had in the NICU. God help us if there is a fire here as this place will go up like a roman candle with all of the O2 bottles I have here... we don't carry this much oxygen or equipment on our ambulance I don't think! It is great having her here though instead of having to truck back into the city every night to see her. I think it is only now it is starting to sink in that I am a DAD!!! Chack out the new pics from today and compare them to the ones from Day 1.

Spoke with the nurse yesterday. They are wanting to send our WALDO 2.0 home looks like Thursday of this week. She has not been doing well in wheening off of the oxygen though she jumped of the ventilators without a hitch. We are waiting on confirmation from the insurance company that they will pay for the home O2 kit and the apnea monitor that she will have to come home with before they make a definitive decision on when she will come home. The nurse said yesterday though that they are shooting for this Thursday like I said.
In order for her to come home though we have to spend a night up in the NICU with her though to become familiarized with the equipment with which she'll be sent home: how it works and what to expect of the alarms. I am not entirely certain, however, that they will send her home with the apnea monitor as she has not had such a spell in over a week. We will, however, get to have her home for Christmas and with luck, by christmas will even be in the new house I bought (still remodeling that).

I should think that after today's lesson, you will have learned that when playing a game of chicken, particularly with a 3/4 Ford, YOU LOSE! I had to buy one foglight bulb ($18) and a bracket for my front license plate ($8). You, on the other hand, are out a chaperone for Bambi's Prom. Given her apparent lack of judgment as demonstrated by her behavior today, maybe the deer community is not out anything at all. Dunno. Bambi's Mom wasn't dead when I backed up to her in the median...but she was after I stomped her head in the mud for making me late for work. Of course stomping her head in the mud made me feel better until I saw all the blood on my pant leg. I hasten to mention that NONE of this would have happened had she crossed at the damn cross walk!
The best trucks in the world are built FORD tough... HOOAH!!

It used to be that the release of the episodes were reliably released. Since the debute of the Strangerhood though this seems to have changed. 43 which was supposed to have been available last night, and whose release was only anounced Monday, is still yet to be available. Has anybody else noticed this? A new-comer, I have been here to see the release of the last quarter of season 2. I bought the DVD for both seasons to catch me up after downloading each through the archives. Somehow I just cannot justify becoming a sponsor anymore as it was definitely my desire to do so (came on too late in 2 to do so).

For halloween this year I dressed up for work. As the manager of a computer lab I could think of no more appropriate costume than a nerd. Immediately after work went up to the NICU to visit our little girl. Waldo 2.0 was embarrassed and asshamed and could not stand to be seen with me. Now I know how my dad must have felt all of those years as a computer programmer for the Air Force.
Waldo 2.0 is doing great. Since Friday when the last posted picture was posted, she has been taken off all of the ventilators and now only has supplimental oxygen via a nasal cannula. She is up to 3lbs now and last night had her first eye exam. She has passed all tests so far and is improving famously.

      ALCON--
Yesterday the wife and I went to the hospital for our daily visit in the NICU to see our little girl. She is no longer under the lights so they are not hiding her eyes under a skull cap anymore and the wife got to see Sylvia's face for only like the second time. She is also no longer on the ventilator but instead a c-pap which looks like the breathing apparatus on a Draeger re-breather and provides positive pressure breaths through a nasal canula. They tried taking her off of it all together yesterday earlier in the day, but she is not quite ready for that yet. Good news is that we got to hold her for the first time yesterday. Really made the wif'e day and she was giddier than a school girl the rest of the day. I have new pics and as soon as they are digitized, I will be posting them.

Check out the new pics I have posted. Especially those of you in the military have seen the motivational posters for Teamwork and Courage hanging about the garrison, but my UA found these and had them displayed in our unit and I thought it would be nice to share them with all of you guys. Make sure you blow them up enough to read the captions...they are the best parts!

Am waiting for Episode 40 to be released and am starting to get the shakes again. It was my hope that when I saw that The Strangerhood was available, maybe it would help. Guess it's like given Pot to a Heroine addict cause it did not do any good and I am still having trouble figuring it out. Don't know what to think about the Strangerhood yet other than it is no RedvsBlue. I NEED MY RVB!!!!
