    • Pence Misrepresents His Religious Freedom Restoration Act In Interview

      Whedabra

So, Mike Pence did an interview with George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning about his discrimination law. In summary, this is how it went down:

Pence wound up misrepresenting his state's RFRA, all but stating it is exactly like the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act signed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. It is not. He also wrongly suggested his law is similar to those of the other 19 states that have enacted RFRAs. It is not.

The Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act is greatly different from both the federal RFRA and the other state RFRAs, and Pence's suggestions to the contrary are misleading at best, intentionally factually false at worst. He even falsely stated that the Indiana law does not apply to private parties unless the government is involved.

On multiple occasions Pence cited the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act rather than the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act when making his points. If this isn't a calculated attempt to mislead and misinform, I don't know what is.

Pence was asked if he thought gays and lesbians should be protected from discrimination several times, and each time he refused to answer the question. Instead he said the following: "I'm just determined to clarify this bill, this is about protecting the religious liberty of people of faith and families of faith."

This man is also considering running for president next yet. If this is the best we can do, I will truly be disgusted.

    • CEOs Against The Religious Freedom Restoration Act

It's nice to see so many big companies taking a stand against the misleadingly titled (vote for marriage, anyone?) "Restoration of Religious Freedom Act' which is meant to allow businesses and corporations to cite "religious beliefs' as a defense, should they be sued by a private party for discrimination.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted: Apple is open for everyone. We are deeply disappointed in Indiana's new law and calling on Arkansas Gov. to veto the similar #HB1228.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tweeted: "Today we are canceling all programs that require our customers/employees to travel to Indiana to face discrimination." Salesforce employs around 3,000 people in Indiana and holds conferences in the state that see upwards of 8,000 attendees, the removal of which will undoubtedly have an impact on Indiana's economy.

In an interview with Re/code, Benioff went on to say: "We've made significant investments in Indiana. We run major marketing events and conferences there. We're a major source of income and revenue to the state of Indiana, but we simply cannot support this kind of legislation."

Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, in an open letter posted to the Yelp! blog, says that "it is unconscionable to imagine that Yelp would create, maintain, or expand a significant business presence in any state that encouraged discrimination by businesses against our employees, or consumers at large.'

PayPal founder Max Levchin tweeted: "What is happening in Indiana is pretty unbelievable. However it's dressed up, it's a signal that discrimination is welcome in this state."

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a similar bill last year, but so far it doesn't look like anything is about to change in Indiana. What's more annoying is that Governor Mike Pence (the one who signed in the act) is said to be considering a presidential bid for the 2016 election.

Then to top it all off, Arkansas is also trying to enact similar laws. Way to go Arkansas!

    • The Religious Freedom Restoraction Act

We've got some bullshit going on in Indiana and it's called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Seriously, that's what it's called, and it's a scary as it sounds since it cloaks discrimination in the guise of religion.

On Thursday the governor, Mike Pence, signed legislation that could legalize discrimination against racial minorities, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.

The "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" would allow any individual or corporation to cite its religious beliefs as a defense when sued by a private party. The problem is, as many opponents of the bill, which included business leaders, argued that it could open the door to widespread discrimination. Business owners who don't want to serve same-sex couples, for example, could now have legal protections to discriminate.

I'm with Hillary Clinton who tweeted: "Sad this new Indiana law can happen in America today. We shouldn't discriminate against ppl bc of who they love #LGBT"

      I see black and blue.
      Ken sees black and blue.
One of my cousins sees black and blue.
My other cousin, however, see white and gold... though saw it as black and blue for a moment before it turned white and gold.

    • Your Last Words

      Whedabra

A song came on my Pandora station earlier, now I can't even remember the title or the artists, but it got me thinking about what my last words might be.

You see, this song (I want to say it's something from Barlow Girl) was playing when my sister lost control of the rental car we were in on slush covered roads during a blizzard in New York a few years ago. We nearly hit another car as the vehicle went into a spin, then we bounced off a cement barrier, we nearly were run into by an 18 wheeler as we spun again and wound up threading the needle between it another vehicle.

It all happened in slow motion, I had my hand dangling from the handle above the passenger door, relaxed actually. I was even giving commentary as it all ll happened. First it was "we're not going to make it." Then "Oh, maybe we will make it." Then "No, we're not going to make it." Then my sister looks over at me and says "I love you Thomas," and I said " I love you too," and we both got this look of acceptance on our faces and readied ourselves for the pileup we were about to cause.

Had things gone differently, and we somehow hadn't spun around again and she had not so expertly regained control once we were facing the right way, my last words would have been "I love you too." And I'm strangely okay with that. I had always joked that my last words were going to be something snarky, but now I'm hoping that "I love you" or "I love you too" really do get to be my last words when I eventually do die.

I don't mean for this to be morbid, but I am curious now and I hope you all will indulge my curiosity.

What do you hope your last words will be?

I often go around humming the "this is Halloween" song to myself.

Oh my god! ME TOO! I have the soundtrack... and I absolutely LOVE Danny Elfman's work as well! Elfman and Burton just working together with films is just perfect. Every year around Halloween and Christmas I get the whole soundtrack stuck in my head and I just annoy who's around me with singing it... but I just cant help it! That movie it always going to be a love of mine. smiley1.gif

I am never one to say a lot but when i do i try to make sure it is something worth being said. besides your a a nice guy and a good friend even if we dont know each other that well. :)

growing up i was raised christian at a UCC church then when my parents split i was going to that one and an Assembly of god christian church. and though they were both christian they were diffrent. plus i became alienated by my old church because i was not there all the time. it was very sur real and fustrating. People in the old church acted like they were beter than me and i had been baptized their and they werent. i knew more about hte churhc and the building than they did.

so after a few years at the UCC church and a few assembly of god churches i came to my own ideas. and one night after searching random thing i discovered my beleifs were in line with wiccan and it all made sence to me.

    • Rinawa

Thats ok i get a similar reaction from people when they find out i follow a wiccan path.

they dont not fully understand my beleif nor try to but yet feel perfectly compelted to tell me openly and rudely how wrong i am in that choice. and like with your case it is also fear that drives them.
