Chapter 7 â€" Secrets Learned
Right around two hours later (11am) we’re all getting pretty hungry and decide to stop in the next populated area, which just happens to be Owen Sound, so we try to find a place to stop that’s not in town, but not to far away. We find the perfect spot, from here it’s like a 5-10 minute walk, and we need some sort of exercise on our trip, so, Cliff and I get out of the boat first, followed by Kat and Elly, and Cliff asks, “so, Elly isn’t all that mad about what happened,†catching me completely off guard, I say, “what?†“From earlier,†Cliff says, “oh yeah, well, Im still trying to build up the courage to face her again†Cliff looks a little puzzled, “why, didn’t you hear what I just said,†“well, yeah, but I don’t think you understand my situation, you know how to read people and have never had a problem like this.†We chat on for a bit longer on the subject and we both agree that Elly and I don’t have to talk together for at least another 5 or 6 hours. (Depending)
As Cliff and I are talking, Elly and Kat seem to be a little talkative themselves, at least, loud enough to hear in between the break in conversation that Cliff and I have, Kat says, “So, Cliff’s cute eh?†“What, he’s just a friend of mine,†Elly protests, “So then why are you never blatantly angry at him and always other guys?†Kat asks intriguingly, “well, Cliff never really says the things that piss off my feminism,†“admit it, he have a thing for him,†at this point im paying more attention to their conversation then my own, “can you keep a secret,†Elly says in confidence that Kat won’t tell anyone the next thing she’s going to say, “promise,†“I don’t have a thing for Cliff, but I do for. . . †Then Elly starts whispering too quiet for me to hear.
“So, any good gossip,†I hear Cliff say to me, “what?†I say, then remembering that Cliff knows that I have better ease-dropping skills then him I say, “Nah, but apparently Elly doesn’t have a thing for you, I didn’t hear who she does have a crush on though.†Cliff seems to think for a second and says, “how much did Elly deny this crush of hers before she admitted it,†“somewhat, but it didn’t seem long before she gave in and told Kat about it, her exact words were ‘can you keep a secret’ then she said ‘I don’t have a thing for Cliff but I do for…’ then she started whispering in her ear,â€Â
-Just for the record, Cliff and I were master gossipers at our school, I got the information, and he put the pieces together using knowledge he has of that person, back in eighth grade we wrote for the school paper. We were run out by our readers when there secrets were told to everyone (but we mostly used info on snobby or rude people, so it wasn’t all bad)
“Hmm… give me a bit to think about it, I’ll know her crush boy by the end of the day,â€Â
“So you can’t tell him about it,†Elly says to Kat, “crap, I really want to, but Ive never broken a promise before, and im not about to start now,†“good, so Kat, any secrets you’d like to tell me,†I clue back in at this point, “well, I told you something about me, I need some reassurance that you wont tell anybody,†says Elly hoping that Kat will break down and tell her something, “well, lets see, you already know that Ive never left my town besides today, you know I have a thing for Jerry, hmm, I’ll think of something, and tell you by the end of the day,†Kat says, “as long as you tell me something today.â€Â
“Finally†I think to myself as I see the ‘welcome to Owen Sound’ sign, then I yell, “hey guys, we’re here,†then I realize something, “hey Cliff, in all the commotion, I forgot to ask you one of your secrets, I mean, im pretty sure you don’t hav-†“wrong,†Cliff interrupts, “as much as it pains me to say, I’ve kept this in for far too long,†im completely confused with the matter of subject right now, so I continue to listen to him, “as you may know, Im drummer in a band right?†I agree with, “yeah,†“well I was lying, I can’t even play drums,†holy crap, if he was able to hold that lie strong for 3 years strait, then what else could he be lying about, but it does explain why Ive never seen him play.
