I'm still alive. I haven't had regular computer access, but I do got a cheap laptop so now I do. I've been trying to piece my life back together after pretty much everything fell apart, and I'm getting there. There are a couple more things I want to finish before I start posting regularly, again, but I'll keep you guys updated.

I'll get my music blog off to a better start once I finish up, too.

I've been having some computer issues, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get another review up. Annoying that this happens right as I start something like this.

    • Music Blog #1 + Quick Update

      Zombilicious

So life has been extremely hectic and some things have happened over the past couple of weeks that have been, well... less than desirable. I'm not too keen on just sharing the whole story for anyone to read, so if you want to know about it, just send me a message or talk to me on AIM or something. I'm pretty sporadic with AIM, but try that, first, if you can.

Anywho... might as well get that music blog thing started, right? I originally planned on starting with Gojira's "The Way of All Flesh", but I think I'll start out a little lighter. And I'll try to keep this regular, posting at least one album per week. Though don't hold me to that, things can get really busy for me in a flash.

It's Coldplay's newest release, Viva La Vida
      VivaLaVida.jpg

Track #1 - Life In Technicolor
Hm, starts out with the synth sounds familiar to Coldplay's music. Sound quality seems a little lackluster throughout this track. All instrumental, and rather short.

Track #2 - Cemeteries Of London
Singing with ambient noise starts out this track. The guitar work is pretty familiar, too. Though not bad, this song doesn't really stand out, to me.

      Track #3 - Lost
Percussive and vocal driven, with what sounds like a synthesized church organ in the background... A little noisy. It retains sort of a light tone, but still feels driven. Again, nothing is really standing out on this album so far.

      Track #4 - 42
Piano and vocal work, very mellow beginning. Orchestral synth joins in shortly, as does a slow, simplistic drumbeat. It's not bad, and so far I can see this song fitting a rainy drive very well. Tempo picks up. Simple guitar riff, but it gets the job done and pushes towards the vocals coming back in. Religion seems to be a recurring theme throughout the album. Not necessarily the meaning of the album, but I've caught at least one small religious reference in each track thus far. Ends softly with a fade.

Track #5 - Lovers In Japan / Reign Of Love
Piano and a bass line drive the opening of this track, very familiar methodology for Coldplay, but that's not a bad thing. There's a reason they're popular, after all. Sort of a joyous sound to it. Another soothing track of theirs. Fades just past midway into the ambient piano work of Reign of Love, not a bad transition, really. Extremely subdued. Piano work compliments the vocals nicely, as does the ambient noise in the background.

      Track #6 - Yes
...Interesting start. Begins with orchestral synth, which dies off after a few seconds and picks back up with a driving, simple guitar line. Very basic vocal work, but basic isn't always a bad thing. Nice orchestral mini-solo. Serves as a good break of sorts. This track reminds me of another album, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which is a very good thing as it's one of my favorites, but it brings forth new sounds as well. It fades off and picks up into an entirely different sound about three fourths of the way through, a very very basic, almost dance-like sound. Seems like a poor choice to keep this track merged as two sounds, as they're entirely different and although in some cases that works, here it didn't really seem to. This should have been split into two separate tracks. For that matter, this second "track" doesn't really fit the style of the album.

Track #7 - Viva La Vida
The title track, of course. Starts out with staccato violin work, leading into vocals and the ever-present background synth work. Some bell work, which is interesting, though not a highlight of the song. It blends well with the movement of the music. Some vocal scale work. Maintains a single sound all of the way through the song, and while not bad, it's also not that good. Coldplay has produced much better than this song, and for a title track, it lacks a lot of flair. There's nothing that interesting in it, and it feels really lackluster.

      Track #8 - Violet Hill
A very different sound than the rest of the album opens this song, with a more powerful guitar sound to accompany it. A bit of a darker sound than rest of the album. Very repetitive sounds.

      Track #9 - Strawberry Swing
Very mellow. Basic instrumental work. A rather dull track.

Track #10 - Death And All His Friends
Starts slow and moves into a more powerful, but still maintaining the mellow sounds familiar to Coldplay, ending.

      Summary
Overall, the album was a lot softer, lacking the more powerful tracks Coldplay's previous albums had. It's not a bad album, but it's certainly not their best. It's worth listening to, but it's definitely a try before you buy kind of album. I wasn't all that impressed by it, myself. I'd only give it six and a half out of ten, which doesn't mean its bad, it just doesn't mean it was outstanding, either.

      Coldplay - Viva La Vida
      6.5/10 (Decent)

I'm going to be turning my Journal into a music blog sort of deal. I'll report on life happenings every so often, but I'll try to review an album at least once or twice a week, giving a track by track review as I listen to it. At the end, I'll sum up what I thought of the album and whether or not I'd recommend paying for it (or just putting on an eyepatch and a hookhand) or avoiding it. I'll try to vary genres (which won't be too hard considering how many different things I listen to). I'll review new and old alike, still giving the same walkthrough review style for each one. Hopefully you'll enjoy it!

So, stay tuned and I'll have the first one up by Wednesday night! And I'll take requests, by the way. Always love to try out new music.

edit: HAHA WHAT? Me keep to an arbitrary schedule I set for something on the internet? Preposterous! I'll have it up soon, though. Got a little busier than I expected.

A friend of mine snapped a picture of the setlist for the Opeth concert (last journal entry), and I got it from him:

I saw Opeth on Tuesday. It blew me the fuck away. Nothing quite like seeing your favorite band up close while jumping up and down with a bunch of other die-hard fans.

ACTUALLY THERE IS SOMETHING BETTER. My friend Aaron got to meet Akerfeldt (the singer, lead guitarist, song-writer), take pictures, etc. And at the end, the other guitarist (who also plays with Arch Enemy) HANDED him a pick. Lucky SOB. D:

There's a lot going on in my life, right now, and I'm trying to get it all sorted out. I've been having some pretty rough times. I may post more about things later on, but so much is uncertain these days.

Oh yeah and my current musical addictions consist of Opeth (of course), Coldplay, and Iced Earth.

Mid-may, I drove to Chicago with a couple of friends to go see Progressive Nation 2008, which consisted of Opeth, Dream Theater, Three, and Between the Buried and Me. Our seats were front row of the balcony, and the the venue (the Rosemont Theatre) only held probably around two or three thousand people, so it they were pretty good seats.

      Three
Three is a band I'd never heard of, but holy crap, they were amazing. We bought their CD, and their recordings aren't nearly as powerful as their live performance was, but then again, who's are? I'll be watching this band closely over the next few years.

      Between The Buried And Me
Ugh. Disgraceful. BtBAM was a prog-hardcore band at the start, and not really that shabby of one, but the problem is, for this concert, they decided to stick to their newer works, which are all purely hardcore. It wasn't progressive at all, and very, very sub-par.

      Opeth
Opeth was everything I thought they would be: freaking awesome. Frederic, their new guitarist, did have some trouble being as energetic as the rest of the band, but it's understandable. He'll pick it up soon enough. They opened with Master's Apprentice, which was great. They played In My Time Of Need from Damnation, which I thought was a rather strange song to play live, but it was still good. They rocked.

      Dream Theater
Dream Theater is everything they should be: awesome. I was starting to get a little tired from lack of sleep and driving across two states, by this point, so I wasn't as attentive as I could have been, but it was just as excellent as when I saw them back in August of 2007.

Now, as of yesterday, I'm back from the four day camping and music festival that takes place right outside of my own town, Wakarusa Fest. Lots of win was had. Since there were so many bands, I'll give you the top two highlights:

      The Flaming Lips
Jesus. Christ. This was one of the best experiences of my life. I was so close, and the music and atmosphere was so great, that you couldn't help but just move move move move. Not to mention that I got to meet Wayne and Kliph (singer and drummer) beforehand, and then be in the third group of 200 to EVER see their new movie, Christmas on Mars, and be in the front row for it, meeting Wayne AGAIN.

      Sound Tribe Sector Nine: STS9
Front row center. Amazing setlist. Crazy light show (and to make that even better, I was wearing those clear-lens 3D glasses the whole time). Light sticks flying everywhere. Seriously, I have never moved so much during a concert as I did during STS9. As soon as their recording CD of this performance goes up on their site, I'm buying it, and you should too. It was one of the most incredible things ever.

As of about fifteen minutes ago, I am twenty years old. This year, I've had very little hype for my birthday. I see twenty as the "Ooooh, not quite" birthday, and a slap in the face. Sure, I'mma have my fun today, but it's not like it's going to be next year, where I won't remember any day between my birthday and St. Patrick's day. But hey, regardless, I'm still twenty and I'm still gonna go out and get my kicks and giggles.

Woah, you got awards? How'd you manage that?

Well I've had them for a few months now...but I didn't do anything. They must have just visited my profile and gave it to me. Pretty soon the awards won't matter anyways. They're going to a different award system where you have to do certain things (like get 50 friends, make so many journals, etc.) and they'll also have different levels of each award. Think of them more in terms of Xbox achievements.
