    • Is There Still Life on this Planet?

      ____

      Well... Is there?

I haven't been here in a VERY long time (73 million internet years by my count... I really ought to be looking for internet fossils around here). Just noticed someone I know from here on xBox live (who I also haven't spoken too in years) and it made me think of this place... Looked it up and who knew? It still exists!

    • These things are fun...

... And I like them. Yes that was as cold as it looked and yes I got doused. Totally worth it :D

      ____

So... Gotta vent... Here is my iPhone sega:
Jailbroke my iPhone 4 using redsn0w... It worked fine (I guess... Took it awhile but it went pretty smoothly.
Got MyWi 4.0 for tethering since i have no internet at my house. The 3 day trial worked great... So I tried to buy the full version for $20. It took FOREVER via EDGE (all I have at my house and no real internet is available) but it finally went though and installed. Then it said "requires reboot" and promtly rebooted without giving me a chance to stop it. The jailbreak however is tethered.. Meaning it needs a PC with redsn0w to boot... Which I had on my computer. At work smiley5.gif
Fortunetly I remembered that I had cleverly burned this and the MASSIVE iphone firmware to a CD... I went out in the snow and ice to my car at 11pm and managed to find the CD... What a lifesaver! Put everything on my PC at home and tried to put it...
No luck.. It kept freezing partway though and there was no making it do anything else. So I went ot restore it.. Only to discover iTunes required an internet connection to do a restore dispite the fact that I HAD THE FIRMWARE ON CD!
      Ghey. Massively, Massively ghey.

      So I went to bed.

This morning (when I am supposed ot be celibrating my birthday) instead I took my non functioing phone, my CD, cables and my sister POS laptop (my laptop runs linux so it won't work and my windows pc is a desktop) to the libary to give iTunes the internet it assumes that all people should be equipped with. Booted the phone in recovery mode and went to install my firmware off CD so I could avoid the massive download only to find that the CD drive is MIA... The computer is not even recognizing that there is a DRIVE let alone a disk... So... I bite my lip and download the 700 some-MB fire... 40 minutes later: "iTunes cannot restore this iPhone. An unknown error has occured"

      W. T. F

So... As a last ditch effort I try downloading iTunes 10 or whatever the latest version is... It takes 1.5 HOURS to install... I was sure it was frozen several times.... So.. FINALLY it installs and I go to attempt another restore... Nope.. It wants to download the stupid file AGAIN! So I try a custom restore and manually browse to the file ITS not fucking there. The goddamm iTunes installer deleted it.

So now i am downloading it AGAIN.

      Somebody please shoot me.

    • Duncan visits the woods...

      ____

So as those of you who saw my last journal may already know I have purchased a house near Slade, KY. Slade is home the the natural bridge state park as well as a portion of the Daniel Boone national forest and Cliffty Wilderness national monument... This area features hundreds of natural stone arches, the red river, cliffs ranging from a couple foot drops to hundreds of feet EVERWHERE and has beene called the rock climbing capitl of the world. Wildlife includes obvious stuff like deer as well as bears and even the occasional mountain lion. My house is just outside the "city" in an unicorparated area called Zoe. Much of the property is bordered by 60+ft cliffs and the area below the cliffs, on the other side of the road and just generally nearby consists of tens of thousands of acres of a combination of undeveloped private land (mostly) and some largely unused national forest land... Thus the isolation in many places is not even disturbed by the usual contingent of tourists and rock climbers... There are even some old growth areas with trees 6-8th in diameter... Needless to say I spend a lot of time exploring this area and being massive I use my jeep most of the time... I have discovered a number of ponds abandoned structures and other interesting features (the area featured at least one factory a railroad and 60+ houses around 100 years ago but this stuff is long abandoned or removed). Here are some pictures from my most recent trip (click to embigify):

      Dfe7Cl.jpg
First pic of the day... I was heading down a trail I had never explored and decided to stop so my dog could hop out for a drink at the creek that was there... She walked in the water to ensure that she was good and wet by the time she got back in but showed no interest in actually drinking any of the water. Incidentally I left my iPhone 4 in the bed of the jeep... Which of course has no tailgate. Fortunately I noticed it missing soon and was able to locate it by walking back until my Bluetooth headset connected to it. This would have made the second of my iPhones to be claimed by these woods as I lost a 32gb 3GS there once :(

I continued deeper into the woods taking turns at random and passing the inconguios site of some loser looking guys on 4 wheelers that had somehow managed to secure a small contingent of really hot females... They did not appear to be captives given their smiles and friendly waves (while the losers glowered) but I guess you never know. Eventually I came to an abandoned structure... This one newer looking than many of the others... It appeared to have been a pump house for some of the many oil wells in the area:
      3Ztvsl.jpg
      95p8Ll.jpg
The pump was once served by 100a 3 phase 480v service and was probably about 30hp... The motor has been removed though.

From there it was only a few hundred feet to one of the nicest ponds I have found so far:
      4keuIl.jpg
It is large, clean and FULL of fish... It is obviously artificial (because it was formed in a dammed up valley, has the remains of a cement spillway and there are no natural ponds of any size in this state) but who built it an why are a mystery... Especially confounding given that it is some miles to the nearest road.

I parked the jeep in the old spillway (now blocked off by a beaver damm):
      u1eYzl.jpg
To the right you can see my dog Arrow... On the run as usual.

The water was clear and inviting... Sadly it was a bit too cold to swim (for me anyway... Arrow plunged in without a second though).
      sGD5el.jpg

There was even the rotting remains of some metal dock type thing:
      rFe3ol.jpg

Sadly it was soon time to leave... I marked the spot on my gps so I will be able to find my way back... Hopefully with jet ski :D
This was the last pic before leaving:
      4keuIl.jpg

Anyone else have any interesting trips to share?

    • Reach!

      ____

Reach was AWESOME... I am sure that some people will complain about one thing or another because it is different in some ways from the original. For example the scale is much larger (including a space battle and a gun large enough to kill a phantom in one hit EASILY), the variety of vehicles is amazing, there are a huge number of armor specializations, etc. I, however, felt that all of these changes were positive as the audience learned with each new game allowing for a greater level of complexity without slowing down the pace or hurting the playability.

      Other highlights include:
Dark and gritty story with great dialog (I love dark type endings).
Killer chapter names which refer to dialog from previos games (for example: "I need a weapon" and "protocol dictates action!"... It may seem like a small detail but it brings back great memories from previous games and show Bungie pays attention to it's roots.

Only downside I can think of would be the space battle: it's quite fun but very unrealistic: a real space battle would occure at speeds to great for a human operator to control and distances to far way to actually SEE your targets. Morever a host of hard to cromprehend issues would come into play such as avoiding tiny space debris, turning slow enough to NOT kill you and avoiding trajectories which have you escaping or falling into the planets gravity well.

Hopefully I will be on more frequently now.

The TL;DT (too long; didn't type) version of a full update:
Bought a house and 14 acres in a fairly remote region... Its cool.
Found an awesome (and really rare) 1 ton 4x4 van to compliment my jeep... It awesome for camping in the woods.
Still have the Jeep... Been driving the crap out of it on the local 4x4 trails
Got a little Chevy Caviler Z24 for commuting... Sadly its growing on my because its comfortable and has cruise and AC.
Still working at Lexel. Work is fun and pays well.
Working on the house like crazy... Putting in a big garage
Fooling around with the idea of building electric motors and controllers for vehicles
Got an iPhone 4... I can't live without it at this point
Got a 4 wheeler and already rolled it about 6 times down a hill breaking my hand in 3 places. The 4 wheeler was fortunately (mostly) undamaged.
Plans for world domination are on schedule. Apparently it will involve Gerbils.

What up with the RvB people (if there are any left)?
Oh yeah: Halo Reach@12:01!!!!!!1111 Yes I will be up all night... I had my vacation day planned a month in advance... :D

Now off to best buy to wait in line....

No, Joss was allowed to take the series with him when he left Fox. That's how he was able to do Serenity with Universal. He's just not found a new venue for it yet, outside of the movie and comics.

EDIT: Why did you build a function generator, a digital camera and a power supply? Those thing are all fairy cheap to buy and they work great.. .Of course I get ads from "Metric Test" selling stuff... I see "function generators (they are actually arb generators but they are in the function generator section) that sell for like... $15K or more.... My company would NEVER spend that much... They were not happy about renting an abitary waveform generator when I needed one once.

      1) still haven't built them all
      2) because I want to flex my engineering muscles - especially when I don't do it so much at work...
      3) I can build things that do what I need to do a helluva lot cheaper than I can buy them
      4) Secret project #1 will explain some things, whenever I finally finish it
      5) every list needs a "5"

I don't think there is a cheaper unlocked version. If you get one I bet you can find hacks for it. My boss is hacking his all the time.

Yeah, but with a light winch, a pair of lockers, 4" lift and 31"s . . . That Sammy will go places that would stretch the limits of the all mighty MB. . . Sad, but true.

And yeah, for the most part, Unibody = Fail. But, if you're modding to the 38" realm, more than probably you're reinforcing the structure with goodies as well . . . As for the JK, while I'd love to have half the goodies under it's belt, I'm still not convinced on driving one myself . . . Just something about the looks of it. Add that to the fact that my YJ is smaller all the way around, and you have mine with about $1500 of mods ( to equall the JK goodies package ) keeping up, and in some places ( Canyon Territory ) out classing that new beast. That being said, it doesn't matter what you drive, a Willy's will still go places we'd only dream of. Either one of us.

    • chaospatient

Nope, not a major bit at all. Been through three sets because of damage (two on the trail, and one on a culvert) and a set of rims (also culvert - the alloy stock rims, I'm running a set of 16's off an 02 KJ now) and have left plenty of rubber behind for the rocks to remember me by.

Yeah, the Rubi's a nice rig out of the box, no doubt about it. Still trying to warm up to the TJ series though. What can I say? I'm a CJ fanboy driving a YJ. They just feel more solid to me somehow. The XJ isn't a bad machine either. But like I said, that beat up old YJ is my only trail rig, and it's my Daily, so with as much as I put it through, that old girl and her family's earned a bit of a soft spot.

Hell, I know all about the d35/30 combo, I run it! With twin open Diffs! And yet, with all of those weak links, I've gone places I saw Chevy Trucks built up and stuck. And pulled out. And I'm running Stock. God I love Jeeps. since 1941 never had as much meaning, and brand loyalty . . . it's earned it.

      My humble opinion, of course.

    • chaospatient

Hmm . . . No, it's been around, just no one likes it because it's considered too weak. Can't even handle the torque of the 4.0L . . . rips apart. But like I said, I've had two, and neither one gave me problems. Except for the Synchros on number one, and that had 145,000+ on it, Gears like new. Eh.

    • chaospatient

Holy crap, I was happy it was something I could fix! I mean, one of the things we checked was the pressure in the Fuel Rail . . . 95-115psi. I'm lucky it didn't rupture while I was driving around . . . .

And the AX-5 is a smaller version of the AX-15. the AX-15's for the 4.0L, the AX-5 is for the 2.5L. It's a Light duty Five-Speed, and by all right should have died a long time ago. Well, ok, the Sychros in the first one under mine died. Threw a new one in it from a '98 and that one's been doing fine. It's been a tough transmission, though. But yeah, long short, it does is exist. No body likes them though. Everyone wants an NV4500 . . .

    • chaospatient

Yeah . . . my YJ was being kind of ridiculous a couple of years ago . . . was putting along just fine, 19+MPG (2.5L/AX-5/NP231/4.10 . . . you know the drill) and then pow! 8-9MPG, no power, etc . . . replaced basically every sensor on the powetrain, and then after all of that, traced the lines. Found out that the geniuses at Daimler Chrysler decided to route the fuel lines between the body and the frame crossmembers . . . between the body mounts. 15 year old Jeep, abused off-road, we can guess the story from here. Luckily, though, your problem was solved pretty quickly, and for nothing more than a bit of fuel.

Could have been worse. Or tricky. Believe me, that's one puzzle that I was not happy about . . .
