      Dear RvB Journal,
It has been a very long time since I've posted a journal here. Ack, even my photobucket account expired! How can that be? Where have I been? Abducted by aliens? Traveling to the ends of the earth? Developing the cure for what ails us? Unfortunately the truth is a bit more mundane. Life just got busy. I made a facebook account. You understand how things go. It's not personal. I won't garuntee I'll be any more regular here, but I thought it was worth checking in to see what is going on.

      Yours Truly,

    • Happy National Pie Day!

      alltheantics

There really is a holiday for everything!

In honor of this day I considered becoming a member of the American Pie Council. On second thought I am not such a diehard fan. (At least not $35 fan, maybe for $5 I would consider it.) But dear friends do not let me dissuade you from joining. Check out the Pie Council's site at www.piecouncil.org/national.htm.

      Fun Pie Facts . . .
Oliver Cromwell banned the eating of pie in 1644, declaring it a pagan form of pleasure. For 16 years, pie eating and making went underground until the Restoration leaders lifted the ban on pie in 1660.
Clandestine pie eating! Yes! Count me in!

The wealthy English were known for their “Surprise Pies†in which live creatures would pop out when the pie was cut open.
This must have been the precursor to the stripper in a cake . . . And how do bake live things into a pie without cooking them? This worries me.

Boston Cream Pie is a cake, not a pie.
      So THERE!

The first mention of a fruit pie in print is from Robert Green’s Arcadia (1590): “thy breath is like the steame of apple-pyes.â€Â
Romantic, no? smiley12.gif -day is approching. Give it a try on your better half. smiley0.gif

It arrived! Like an entire month ago!!!
So I go and get this amazingly awesome computer and what do I do? Completely igonore the RvB crowd. smiley2.gif That is so lame of me! Please accept my heartfelt apologies. Maybe I should mention that even though I'm now using a stupendously awesome new computational machine, I still do not have a high speed internet connection. *cringe* smiley7.gif So interneting-it-up is still a bit sluggish. Yeah, it is a sad state of affairs that I am hoping to change in the future. But gameplaying on this machine is grrreat. The Sims 2 looks especially awesome. smiley1.gif So I admit I have been playing the Sims a whole heck of a lot more than I have updating my RvB journal. My social meter must be way low because of that! (teehee)

But I am babbeling.I hope to have a few new photos to post soon. That's right photos! So stay tuned for that! And I hope you all have digested your turkey, sampled aunt Joan's fruitcake, and had an overdose of uncle Joe's football fanaticism this weekend! smiley0.gif

I can't wait for DVD burnination! No more bumming off my sister's lap top! Non sluggish photo and video editing! Smooth game playing. Quad core processing!

Can you tell that I'm excited?!!!!
      smiley0.gif

Did you ever watch the Homestar Runner puppet videos about Strongbad at his office computer? If you have no idea what I am talking about go to www.homestarrunner.com click on toons, puppet stuff and watch Biz Cas Fri 1,2, and 3 . I bust a gut every time. Teehee. Always makes my computer problems seem like small potatoes.

I'm back from Virginia! I managed to escape bug bite free, unlike my cohorts. All in all it was a good time. There was a lot of green leaves, and many a scenic view to behold.
      countryside.jpg
There's lots of American history in VA, so I stopped at the Monticello to see the home of Thomas Jefferson (or Tommy J. as he became known on our trip).
      meatMonticello.jpg
I visited the fine and upstanding drinking establishment, Miller's, where supposedly the Dave Matthews Band got it's start.
      millers.jpg
Ice cream was eaten and funny faces were made.
      icecream.jpg
I visited the University of Virginia and saw the famous parts like the Rotunda and the less famous parts like the "nearly nude statue"(as seen on roadsideamerica.com).
      NearlyNude2.jpg
Perhaps despite my better judgement, I bought a Virginia is for lovers T-shirt.
      loversTshirt.jpg
Finally, my digital camera started to go bonkers. Eeek! Ghosts!
      ghosts.jpg
I assure you these are only a small sampling of the many antics that occurred. I ate fondue for the first time ever! But alas, I have no pictures of that fateful dinner!

Now I must go and try to diagnose my poor camera's ailments.

One final thing, did you know that the state bird of Virginia is the Cardinal? I did not know this before I went, or I might have avoided the place and missed out on all the fun. Thankfully no vehicles were harmed, I guess state birds have a reputation to uphold.

I am headed out this morning on a somewhat impromptu roadtrip to Virginia. In fact I am printing out directions as I type this and I'm supposed to be on the road in about12 minutes! Wish me luck! If I get back in one piece I'll be sure to post some photos. And just maybe I'll get around to responding to some of your comments.

    • Summer Travel

      alltheantics

Hello all! My appologies for my recent journal negligence, but with the nice weather I'd much rather be out and about than stuck in front of a screen.

One of my most recent projects has been racking my brain for a good roadtrip destination. In early August some friends and I will be taking to the road to see what excitement we can find. This has really become a bit of an annual event. In my research, I have stumbled across RoadsideAmerica.com and have been happliy searching out some bizzare little places. Out of shear curiosity I did a search for my hometown. What came up was nothing cute or silly. No world's largest ball of earwax or anything of that nature, no all we have is pee. Pee! smiley7.gif

Carlisle, Pennsylvania - Jugs of Pee Watch
There are lots of pee bottles along the exit/entrance ramps of I-81 & US11 (where the truck stops are located). They are usually in 1-liter soda bottles. I've spotted one poo box (an old Sprite 24-can box) in the Flying J and 1 free-form pile in the same truck stop.

Just a note: I AM a truck driver and truckers are the first and primary perpetrators of this filthy habit. I have noticed that there is bleed-over into the general population. My observation is that generally, the gallon jugs or 1-2 liter soda jugs are left by truckers. The smaller jugs, usually 16 oz or so (the ones that are becoming more prevalent) are from car drivers, probably an off duty trucker or someone familiar with the business. [Jamie Penderghast, 04/06/2003]

The worst part is that it's true. I've seen what they described! Hopefully my trip includes something more exciting than this!

What sort have places have your summer travels taken you?

This week one of my coworkers lost some important paperwork. Turns out the cleaning person placed them in the garbage by mistake. So he had to go dumpster diving. Not once, but twice. The first time he got covered in yogurt somebody (me?! no, no of course not! smiley4.gif ) threw out.

The past couple of days it's reached 90 degrees around here. That's not so unusual for June, but it definitely does not make dumpsters smell nice. smiley7.gif Especially not yogurt filled dumpsters.

In other news, the snake decoys are working!!! It's great except for the fact that when I forget to use them the birds are quick to bomb my clean white doors with purple grossness. Local strawberries are just about over. I have been eating them at just about every meal lately. The air conditioning is broken in my house. Did I mention it's been hot? So time for me to go find something cold to drink. smiley0.gif

You may recall a lament filled journal from way back in which I detailed my grievances with several cardinals using my car as a convenient place to crap repeatedly while preening themselves in my side mirrors.

      The Culprit:

      The Crime:

(multiply the above photo by about a million smiley7.gif )

Finally I've decided to call in some back up.

      Enter back up:

      and if that wasn't enough . . .

I know, some may say I'm taking some desperate measures, but these are desperate times.

      smiley0.gifI think it's working! smiley0.gif

Well, seeing as how people are on eBay, and considering I myself would consider buying such an item, and considering how people seem to go crazy over those "oh my goodness let's stay overnight and film ghosts!" shows they have on Sci Fi I'd say it's probably a valid marketing technique.

And you doubted the benefits of balloons!?

All balloons leave in the end. Either thier tether breaks loose and it flies away or some jerk head pops it. Sure you have the fun of pretending to be members of the Lollipop Guild, and then the mild buzz from inhaling Helium and Oxygen depravation, but the fun is over way too soon. This little girl explained to me (more or less) that it wasn't how long you had fun with it, but how much you enjoy what little time you had with it. She was absolutely right. So I bought her and my self some ballons from Chic-Fil-A, and just enjoyed the balloons.

Yeah, I expanded on her thought a bit, but thats the jist of what I got from it. She also rambled on a bit about ponies, but I stand firm on my positon on horses and ther ilk. They scare me. They bite. Just say no to ponies. smiley1.gif
