Three years since I last posted anything here. Kind of can't believe my profile still exists.

In the last three years I've been made redundant following the implosion of Realtime Worlds, worked a job I hated for three months, became a professional web developer and got back into the games industry. Also I'm getting married next week, which is very exciting and scary.

Not sure I can become active here again, though; feels like too long a break to get back into the community. Especially since I've not kept up with the videos, comics and in-jokes at all.

Is anybody on my friends list still on here? I've just gone through a couple of profiles, and none of them seem to have had much activity over the past year.

Still in Dundee, still working at Realtime Worlds.
Just bought a house, currently painting the back room so we can move all the boxes out of the living room.
Coming down with a Death Cold that's been making its way around the office.

For more regular status updates, I'm on Twitter, and you should be too.

Every once in a while, I come across a song that sticks with me so completely that I can't help but listen to it on repeat for weeks.

Previous songs include Bear McCreary's All Along The Watchtower from Battlestar Galactica, Brandon Patton's What's The Worst That Could Happen?, a 15-minute rock operetta called Robot Candidate by Ben Krieger and more Jonathan Coulton songs than is probably healthy.

The latest one is Georgia's Hand by Glenn Case.

The trailer for Zak Snyder's Watchmen movie is online at Empire.

It looks pretty decent, although there's no indication of the story for anybody who hasn't read the graphic novel already.

Taking place on July 23rd, two days before the general release.

Full list of participating (UK & Eire) cinemas is here. There's an awful lot of 'em, so chances are everyone in Britain will have seen the bloody thing before it's officially released on the 25th, but I'm still going to pretend that it's special that I get to see it early.

    • Jonathan Coulton is awesome

Probably known to most people as "the guy that did the song from Portal", but you really owe it to yourself to check out more of his stuff.

Apart from Still Alive, recommended tunes are:
      - I Crush Everything
      - Skullcrusher Mountain
      - Creepy Doll
      - Code Monkey
      - Baby Got Back
      - Millionaire Girlfriend
and the entire Our Bodies, Ourselves, Our Cybernetic Arms EP for Popular Science.

Minx and I were at his first ever non-US gig in London last month, and it was awesome.

Other awesome things about that trip were Camden Market, which really has to be seen to be believed, and meeting up with my friend Hugh, who I've not seen in forever and who bought me a copy of Watchmen, which I'm ashamed to admit I hadn't read before.

I'd also like to say that the London Underground is a fucking tremendous system, its only real flaw being how utterly fragile it is; if one station or line is closed, it turns the rest of it into an over-populated nightmare.

Almost a year since I updated - 11 months. Good Lord.

I'm not much use at recounting such a ridiculous period of time in a condensed space, and don't remember enough of it to make a long post, so here are the highlights, in approximately the order they happened.

      smiley9.gif I got an Xbox 360.
smiley9.gif I have moved to Dundee, Scotland.
smiley9.gif I now work as a "Junior Test Engineer" for Realtime Worlds.
      smiley9.gif I now own a car.
smiley9.gif I do not currently have internet installed at home.

Anything else you might be interested in, just ask.

My Xbox Live gamertag is demondownload - but I will not accept requests from people I don't know; if you're not on my friends list then don't bother.

    • Stena can kiss my ass

      aniki

Note: For those of you unaware Stena is one of the major ferry operators in the UK.

So, I was at Auchinawa at the weekend with Colin, a friend from the Tomo-Dachi committee. It was a fun con, all in all; it didn't really need to be four days (and they didn't have the events to fill a con that long), but I got to have a blast on four-player Ouendan! against Scott Ramsoomair. I also kicked everyone's ass at Mario Kart.

However, one organization turned much of the weekend into an unimaginably large headache and stress-fest: Stena Line (they who shall not be linked).

The plan was simple: Get the HSS fast ferry from Belfast to Stranraer, then take the train to Glasgow. On the way back, take the train from Glasgow to Stranraer, and then get another HSS back to Belfast.

      But no.

On the Thursday morning, Stena canceled the HSS. They offered us a slow boat instead; that would have meant a 3-4 hour wait in Stranraer (read: Middle Of Nowhere) for the next train, as it arrived not ten minutes after the train we'd have caught after the HSS departed.

It still seemed better than nothing, but we started calling 'round airlines just in case. Good thing we did, because less than an hour later, they canceled the slow boat as well.

So, air for teh win, or so it seemed. We called five airlines: BA, British Midlands, Easyjet, flybe and bmibaby. Flybe and bmi baby don't fly Belfast to Glasgow, so they were out. British Airways were going to charge us £210 to fly Belfast-Manchester-Glasgow, while British Midlands had the audacity to ask for £370 to go via London with a 4-hour lay-over - both of which were for a single person, one-way. Fuck that shit.

Eventually, we managed to get easyjet flights for £112 for the pair of us - score! All seeemed fine, we made it out to the airport and apart from a rather bumpy landing the trip over was uneventful.

However, because we thought there was a reasonable chance the boat back on the Sunday night would still sail, we only got one-way plane tickets. Any guesses as to what happened next?

The boat back was canceled early Sunday morning, as part of an announcement that all ferries were being suspended "until further notice". Thankfully, as we kept an eye on sailings over the weekend I'd gotten the distinct impression we would be left without transport home, and managed to argue Colin around to the idea of buying some more plane tickets.

I don't even remember what the rip-off merchants at BA and BMI were asking for this time around; we pretty much went straight with easyjet. Thankfully, we bought the flights on Saturday night, before we were 100% certain that the boat was canceled. It was the 7am red-eye on Monday (this morning), but since most people could have been holding out for the boat the flights were only ("only") £93.

The only problem we had was that our boat was supposed to be Sunday evening - we had no accommodation for Sunday night.

Thankfully, another friend associated with Tomo-Dachi lives in Glasgow and is on the committee for Auchinawa, and offered to let us crash at his place. Truly, Dave is a God among men and cannot be thanked enough.

But yeah, that's the story of Paul's Weekend Travel Headache. I'm just glad the con was worth it in the end.

For the most part though, I was either very hungry or very tired. I wasn't 100% the entire time I was there. Plus it didn't help that other, more important things were on my mind. I didn't get as much out of it as I expected, but that's my loss, right? There's always next year, so until then, I'll guess I'll see what happens.

I come from the south of England, and in 23 years of being here, to my shame I've never been to Europe.
But Scandenavia, The Netherlands and Germany have always been the places I've wanted to visit, well above France, Spain and Italy.

If I do end up going to Finland I won't be too far away from Norway. It seems like a great place to visit and I'd love to go on holiday there sometime.

Meh, figures. Those lazy bastards don't seem to care about appealing to the fans much anymore, excluding the new episodes of Robot Chicken and Venture Brothers.

But like I said, 2 extra minutes I think would not kill them. Just make a shorter break or no break at all and leave it at that.

    • PhatPhil

I never said it butchered the show, I said they butchered the opening. Scenes out of place, music messed up, it's just annoying is all.

And with Adult Swim constantly bitching about how not enough people are watching the weekend action lineup, I felt the need to bitch back. Is it not okay for me to have a rant every so often? The DVD version is fine, I'm just saying it pisses me off that they're too lazy or worry too much about valuable advertisement time that they can't spare an extra minute or so to show the full introduction for the animes they show, not to mention one as good as Eureka Seven. And it's perfect for their kind of audience.

EDIT: Also, I kinda don't see the purpose of trying to promote the bands unless they were trying to promote just Asian Kung Fu Generation and L'arc En Ciel. AKFG is pretty good but L'arc is 'meh'.

Totally understandable- just wanted to tease ya for it. I used to live in a little mountain town with one music store, and they had a box- you heard me, A BOX- of CDs to sell. Most of the stuff in that box was either remastered stuff from something like 80 years ago, or bubblegom pop. There were NO decent radio stations there, either- a country station and some Spanish polka station. So I had no choice- I had to become a pirate or go musiclessly insane. I'm not such a pirate anymore, though. xD

It took me like 2 minutes to figure out that it was actually a poorly made film in the first episode, but then I realized the aspect ratio was all weird and they did the focus in focus out thing. So, I gave it a shot and made it all the way to Haruhi, who I really like. XD
