    • The price of games

So Payday 2 is a new game that can be bought for US$40 in a US retail store, and US$34.99 when downloaded via the US Xbox Marketplace. The very same game is AUD$44-48 (for comparison US$40 is roughly equal to AUD$44.30, so it's a surprisingly good price) in an Australian retail store and AUD$59.95 on the Australian Xbox Marketplace. That makes sense. That fills me with confidence, with next gen consoles clearly pushing towards digital distribution, if they use the current pricing models, we are going to be screwed even more than we are by retailers now.

Another example: Halo 4 came out late last year. In a US retail store it is $39.99 (roughly AUD$44.30, remember that), in an Australian retail store it is $65-68, but hey, what with import costs, transport costs and taxes, that seems fair, right. Online, via the US Xbox Marketplace, Halo 4 is US$39.99, so we can expect the Aussie Marketplace price to be around $65-68 right? Wrong, AUD$99.95, more than twice the equivalent cost of the exact same game in the US Marketplace, there's no import costs, there's no transport costs. The only difference is the taxes, and I refuse to believe we pay twice as much just because of taxes.

In the US, sales tax is added at POS, so Americans know that they have to pay slightly more than the $39.99 on the box (or shown online), this is not the case in Australia, with GST included in the price on the box (or shown online). However, if an American took a copy of Halo 4 up to the POS and found out they had to pay more in sales tax than the cost of the game, there would be outrage.

Here in Australia we are getting fucked over the price of games, it's mostly been fixed for retail store physical copy games, with the price of a triple A title going down from about $99-109 when Halo Reach came out to about $79-89 when Halo 4 came out. Also many physical copy games are launching at $69-$79 when they're not triple A titles. However, we're still getting screwed by digital pricing on games. Seeing as that seems to be the direction that Microsoft and Sony want to take console gaming in, every Aussie gamer should be very concerned about this.

So I've been out of town, visiting my mum since Monday. She lives in hte middle of nowhere and has no internet. Could someone fill me in on what this whole "Connect the Hots' controversy is. I've read Geoff's jounral, and seen a whole lot of comments on YouTube; some about how people were disgusted and offended, some about how they've apologised and pleading with the internet to move on ( cos that always works ), but I've seriously got no idea what the hell happened, cos they took down the video. Can anyone just let me know what happened so I have some form of context for this whole thing?

So it seems my cautious approach has somewhat paid off. I've been saying since the console reveal that I'm not going to judge the X1 until the E3 press conference, and I feel fairly happy about it. They've allayed my concerns over Kinect, saying it can be turned off, which was my major concern based on the fact that my housemates can occasionally be arseholes, and I imagine screaming "Xbox Turn Off" would amuse them to no end.

I liked the games that were shown, I'm certainly excited by a few, Halo and Battlefield were always going to get me excited for the X1, but Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall look cool. The big omission I was hoping to see was Watch_Dogs, but that will probably be at the PS press conference.

Some concerns... the price, they mentioned $499 for the US, which could mean anywhere from $500-$1000 here in Aus, cos even though the Aussie dollar is pretty much equal to the US dollar, tech companies still like to fuck us over by charging an arm and a leg for the same thing. Another concern: Kinect, I have one with my 360, I've played the Gunstringer and Fruit Ninja and nothing else. I don't use the voice feature because I have an Aussie accent, and Kinect finds it difficult to determine what I'm saying. Oddly Kinect works if I use a fake US or UK accent, but not when I talk normally, even though it's set to Australia, if the new Kinect fixes this, I may use it more, but it's unlikely, because I don't really see a scenario where I'll talk to my TV. Speaking of TV, I'm highly unlikely to use the X1 to watch TV, cos my TV is the house's main TV, so my housemates use it as much, if not more than me. In the console reveal, they showed off how to change the channel and look at tv guides ( again, may not work in aus ) while watching TV, and I reiterate, housemates can sometimes be arseholes, I can imagine a minor disagreement resulting in repeatedly yelling at the X1 to change channel.

But I've digressed, I've been saying I was gonna wait til E3 to pass judgment, and now it's passed, I'm happy with it, but I hope they clear up the remaining concerns (used games, DRM, etc) like they did with Kinect

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Yes today was Superbowl Sunday, although it's Monday here, so I guess Superbowl Monday, but that could annoy people form the US, so let's just call it Superbowl Funday. Looking at the internet today, the biggest argument seems to be whether to call the sport "football" or "handegg", which is ridiculous, because we all know it's called gridiron and Aussie Rules is the only sport I will ever call football. In conclusion, gridiron is an odd sport in which the players seem to spend a lot of time standing around and talking, then after 2 seconds of play, there are a hundred replays of something inconsequential, and then commercials, then Baltimore wins

Yes sarge, it is a sad day. I recently ordered the very cool Mother of Invention mug from the RT store and it arrive today... with the handle in pieces. I don't know if there's really anything to be done about it, and i guess the key mug functionality is still...functional, but the secondary function of keeping your hands safe from the heat has been rendered inoperative. On the bright side, the awesome AH keychain/bottle opener was in the same box and will be coming soon to a beer near me
