Yep. Worked in Colorado from May through October. Took an involuntarily extended vacation for November and December. (Voluntary for most of December, but nobody wanted to hire us in November since we were going to be gone for 3 weeks in December.) Went to Rome, Budapest, Ireland, and London, and then Sanibel, Florida, in December. Now working in Scranton, Pennsylvania since the first of January. Living in a hotel again. At least we are in a bigger room this time. (1-bedroom suite.) Still no permanent place yet, but we're saving money and will probably be able to buy a place in Texas with cash sometime towards the end of the year.

As of this writing, I am back where many of you found me. Living out of a hotel room. Cecelia and I lost our old jobs, got new jobs, moved everything out of our house and into a storage unit, took a vacation to China, and are back in a hotel room working our new jobs. Moar monies = good. Not having a house anymore is kinda hard (actually the move was the hard part) but we will hopefully figure out something permanent within the next year or so. Presently, we are still working in Texas (a different part of Texas -- up on the Oklahoma border) but we will probably move to Colorado (hopefully) or Pennyslvania sometime later this year. So... that's that.

Not much going on around here. I just wanted to post a short note that I've been making some little review videos on YouTube. They are all about the Halo Mega Bloks sets. Maybe you have seen these in Target or Wal-Mart or something and wondered if they are cool. Well I am here to tell you: they are cool, and they are addicting. The mini-figures are super cool; they are way more articulated than Lego minifigs, and they can be posed in all kinds of cool poses. And you can almost make a full set of Red vs Blue guys out of the sets. So yeah, I have been putting up a few video reviews, and I will continue to do more, so anybody who wants to hear what I sound like, here ya go:

    • Aerosmith: the Nickelback of the 70's

      badgerW

We went to a big Aerosmith and ZZ Top concert tonight. ZZ Top was awesome, and I have come to the conclusion that Aerosmith was the Nickelback of the 70's. Butt rock. They have a couple of very good songs (for the record: "Sweet Emotion" and "Dream On"), but pretty much all the rest of their hits are pretty much just... blah. There's no intelligence there, no message, no wit, no humor, no self-awareness, nothing interesting at all. I remember in the '90s when "Get a Grip" was released, and SNL did a parody commercial for a greatest hits album. Featuring... "Cryin'," "Crazy," "Amazing," "Cryin' Crazy," "Crazy Amazing," "Crazy Amazing Cryin'," "Cryin' Crazy Amazacrazy"...... yeah I liked that album when I was 12 and Alicia Silverstone as a pseudo-lesbo with Liv Tyler was the hottest thing in the world (actually, that's still pretty hot). Anyway, I know the band members are talented players, but the songwriting just sucks for a band that's been at it for 30 someodd years and has been writing their own songs the whole time. I think that whenever their songs topped the charts, there just must not have been much competition. Guns 'N' Roses had a career 1/4 as long but turned out twice as many great songs (IMO "November Rain" is the equivalent of "Sweet Emotion" and "Dream On" combined) not to mention twice as much talent. And that's just G'n'R, a band which I appreciate but would not consider myself a huge fan of. Any comparison with truly great bands such as Queen, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, etc. is simply laughable.

I have a forsale thread on another forum:

      forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=45&threadid=2303166

It's mostly computer stuff, a couple of video games. I am adding to it over time as I go through my stuff, testing things, and deciding what to sell. I still have a bunch of hard drives to add and maybe some more games. If you are interested in anything, let me know.

    • Video Games Live....

      badgerW

I just got back from Video Games Live at Bass Hall here in Fort Worth (I think I've mentioned before that I volunteer there). Basically it is two video game music composers (I hadn't heard of either of them, but one guy said he had worked on Metroid and the other had worked on a fairly game that currently escapes my memory) who created a traveling show that gets local orchestras+choruses to play video game music. The two guys also play guitar on a couple of pieces. They also featured the "Video Game Pianist" Martin Leung who did his blindfolded Mario thing, a medley of Final Fantasy tunes and a couple other things. Hearing "Halo" live = awesome. Oh and Michael Salvatori (one of the Halo composers) was there too. There was a costume contest on stage and a Guitar Hero contest in the lobby, and the winner of the GH contest played "Sweet Emotion" live on stage accompanied by the orchestra and one of the guys on guitar. The winner was a girl and she kicked some ass, 250k points on Expert (she only had to get 225k points to win her prize package) and several 100+ streaks. She didn't do all that great on the solo, but hey, better than I can do.

In any case, if you have a chance to see Video Games Live then I highly recommend it, even though the tickets are fairly expensive. It was definitely better than "Play: A Video Game Symphony" which I saw at Bass Hall last year sometime. The latter seemed more like a guy who wanted to cash in, while VGL was definitely two guys who are in the industry and who actually know video games and love the music. Yeah one of them was a little douchey, but I guess if you're a big nerd who tries to play a rockstar on stage then you will end up looking that way no matter what.

      1) I want to be able to read the comic on the news page without having to click it. What is the point having my alerts say "RT has a new comic", I click on that link, and I see a newspost with a tiny version of the comic that I can't read, so I have to click again to read it. Hello, I alreaddy clicked once because I wanted to see the comic, and that should be enough like it always used to be. This change was made a week or two ago (3 or 4 comics?) and it should be rolled back because it is pointless.

      2) When I make the second click (which actually shows the comic), it takes me to the RT skin for the site. I want to stay on the RvB skin for the site. I should be able to stay in the RvB skin no matter what kind of links I click on. The only exception is perhaps if I am watching videos for a particular show, then it should show the skin for that show; but when I click back on my profile, or another person's profile, or anything else on the site, it should remember that I like the RvB skin and go back to it.

This is cool but a little disappointing. The proportions seem off, and the color of the helmet doesn't match the rest of the armor. The helmet seems too small relative to the shoulders, the neck is long like a giraffe's, and the chest piece has rounded parts that look like boobs. I hate to pick nits, but these things just jumped out at me. Also that pistol that doesn't really look anything like the M6D... and a larger weapon like an AR or even an SMG would be more impressive. I fully approve of the idea, but the execution leaves a little to be desired IMO.

That's what happens when you go to Etsy for Mjolnir armor. lol

Well, in one of the other videos (not the latest, but the one before that, I think), they talk about the top candidates, and one of those candidates was another girl, who was not a gamer, and I recall Khoo being in the car, with her on speakerphone, and she talked about how, "Even though I don't play video games, I think I can still do a really great job at PA." Or something like that. And the staff was discussing how they were really concerned with that candidate, despite her qualifications and experience, because everyone else was a gamer, and they needed a good fit for the group, and a non-gamer wouldn't quite fit the bill.

The episode after that was the focus on Jamie, as opposed to highlighting each of the other candidates in separate episodes, and then making a big reveal for Jamie. I think they were on a time crunch as they revealed Jamie as the new project manager at PAX East, and the episode focusing on Jamie came after that.

    • Jabberwocky

Wow, that is SO cool! She works for Penny Arcade, eeek! That's just friggin' sweet!! I am super jealous.

OMG YOU KNOW SOMEBODY WHO WORKS FOR PENNY ARCADE! I"M JEALOUS OF YOU TOO!!!

Yeah, it was pretty clear from the episode that they had an issue with her online history. After figuring out who she was, I thought that Khoo might be referring to RvB, although they kept it pretty discreet. Interesting that she's not a gamer, I would have figured that anybody on this site would be at least kind of a gamer. She always seemed very sweet and cute.

Oh, the voice of the not-a-gamer girl in the first video was not her. Jamie's voice was the girl saying, "I don't want to sound cliche, but this is seriously my dream job." Jamie is definitely a gamer. She plays PC and Xbox 360 games, including FPS. I think she has a Nintendo DS too. It's her dream job partly because she gets to work with gamers, because she can have that connection with them.

Khoo's comments actually have me wondering if there was anything big that I missed in her time here -- I can't really remember any drama around her, although I don't think I ever watched her or read her journal regularly.

No drama at all. I think they just wanted to plan for the worse, just in case.

Anywhoo. It is super cool that she is working at PA! I can totally see her becoming the face of Child's Play, although her cuteness might actually be a liability in some regards (videogames being a boorishly male-dominated hobby -- the unwelcome comments have probably already started). Anyway, it's a great opportunity and I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

Here's wishing her all the best, and I guess I can now lazy-stalk her through PA-TV instead of randomly through your journal entries like I used to. (Lazy-stalk being a term that I just made up to refer to an irregular online "checking up" on somebody but not a full-on Watch/Follow/etc.)

I think it's super cool too. And the unwelcome comments are something she's probably a pro at handling. You get that stuff as a girl here when you first start out. You get that stuff as a girl playing on Xbox Live. You get that stuff as a girl playing on Steam. Basically, the internet, but I do agree that PA is great deal bigger, in some regards, than the idiots who talk smack on Xbox Live. And with such a public "office", well, yeah, definitely not easy.

Seriously, I give her all the kudos in the world. I don't know if I could do such an intense interviewing process, AND have it recorded for nerds to watch, AND have to be a regular part of an online tv show for nerds as part of the job. I have so much stage fright, so I do have so much respect for her for doing what she does. She's pretty awesome.

    • Jabberwocky

Holy crap. I just watched the two latest Penny Arcade TV episodes. Something kept bugging me, I thought that I recognized the new girl Jamie they just hired for Child's Play. And then I thought back, and I remembered that she was your friend on this site, and now I dig through your journal to find posts with her in them and her account is deleted, and it ends up that her name is actually Jamie (I didn't remember the name, just the face). It has to be her, right? If so, please tell her congrats for me! She did an awesome job in the interviews!

Ha, yes, that's her. We are all very, very proud of her!

Part of her accepting the job was cleaning up her history here, since she has a very public job now and well, haters gonna hate, and they didn't want any of the trolls finding her stuff here and making a stink about it.

She did an incredible job, and I'll definitely pass on the congrats. <3

Well, right about now, I was originally planning to be announcing that tickets for RvB:TX were on sale. Unfortunately, that's not going to be the case. You might have heard that the RT staff has their own event planed for late May. We, the organizers of RvB:TX, don't feel it will be possible to compete with a larger and better organized event, so we're officially canceling our event.

But all is not lost! We're keeping the group page for two reasons:

      1) RvB:TX will now be a hub for all RT fans in and around Texas. We'll keep people up to date on RT related events in and around Texas, from small meet ups to the RoosterTexas event the staff is planning. If you have not already done so, please watch the group to stay up to date on the news.

      2) We're planning a smaller get together in Austin this winter. It won't be as big as our original plans, but it'll still be a chance for fans to get together and have fun.

For more details, please see the journal here.

At $343 a share Apple might be cheaper now than it has ever been. It's trading at 13x forward earnings (20 trailing), that's dirt cheap. As long as they keep earnings up, which I think they've laid down an infrastructure that will keep the earnings up for (at least) several years to come the stock price should continue to climb. Quite frankly if you doubled the stock price, let's make it 700, historically speaking, it's still cheap. When you look at the top 500 stocks of all time (from the 50's till now) their PE ratios turned out to be about 50x earnings during their runs.

There are only two things that scare me. Steve Jobs dying, and our government or some other government throwing down the 'monopoly' stick. If aapl loses Jobs that will certainly create downward pressure on the stock. Probably could be a buying opportunity, again, the infrastructure to create earnings will still be in place.

Forget market capitalization. It doesn't mean anything other than a headline. It happens every time a company becomes the biggest company in the world; no one can believe it. After everyone gets over it, it just comes back to earnings. smiley12.gif ~Joel

Yes I do. That road, Thor, and it's neighbor, Freya, are very steep and long hills and are often closed on days like that.

I live north of that area so I don't go there much anymore, but we used to go to a church that was up that hill about 10 more streets.

We took the long way during winter. Those guys don't know the area or forgot.

Friendly Neighborhood RvB:TX Admin here! Just a few updates on the group today:
      1) We officially have 200 members! Sweet! You Guys Rock!

      2) We'd really appreciate it if everyone watches the group and checks the forum every few weeks or so. We post polls and messages on the group and we need YOUR input to make sure that this RvB:TX will be the best yet. If you already watch the group, thanks a ton! If not, go here and click the watch button. There are also polls concerning likelihood of attendance and optimum ticket price in the group forum.

      3) The event is being tentatively scheduled for next March. Hope to see you there!

      4) We could really use the help of a Web Designer. if you or someone you know could help us get even a bare bones site running, it would be greatly appreciated. However, please note that this will be an act of volunteerism on your part. We'd love to pay you, but we just don't have the money. But isn't being able to say that you designed a site in order to celebrate the greatest Machinima series ever reward enough? If you are still interested, please contact myself, or one of the other group admins.

      5) Keep active in the group. The planning staff is constantly looking for cool ideas for events, and they are the best spot to get yours out there.

That's all folks! Keep your eyes glued to the screen for further updates.

She did it at her desk as she was talking to a coworker. AND she used bottled water: she poured it over the toothbrush to wet it, spit both straight toothpaste and then the water she rinsed her mouth out with into the trash can, then poured more water over the toothbrush to rinse it off. And the bathroom, which has like 8 sinks, is about 30 feet away from her desk.
