Actually, I can give you references if you want them. I took them out because it looked silly without the footnotes. I figured you probably wouldn't want to read through his various sources, considering foremost that they're not internet based.

Horus seems to be the original, but there are lots that share most of the same traits.

And please make an effort to spell and write correctly, I can't be bothered continuing with this if I can't understand you, which I don't think is unreasonable.

    • GeneraI_Beef

It's not just one story, a great many ancient gods share the same story (it's believed to be cause of the astrological phenomena around december 25th). It's not hard to find them if you take a moment to look smiley6.gif .

I don't believe there is no god, though I'm not so arrogant as to dismiss ALL possibility, because that would be silly.

As for relationships, I'll hand you over a little summary of Horus' life (remember Horus is a lot older than Jesus, from around 3000BC):

Broadly speaking, the story of Horus is as follows: Horus was born on December 25th of the virgin Isis-Meri. His birth was accompanied by a star in the east, which in turn, three kings followed to locate and adorn the new-born savior. At the age of 12, he was a prodigal child teacher, and at the age of 30 he was baptized by a figure known as Anup and thus began his ministry. Horus had 12 disciples he traveled about with, performing miracles such as healing the sick and walking on water. Horus was known by many gestural names such as The Truth, The Light, God's Annointed Son, The Good Shepherd, The Lamb of God, and many others. After being betrayed by Typhon, Horus was crucified, buried for 3 days, and thus, resurrected..

The other characters I mentioned earlier have similar traits. Fascinating eh?

By astrological significance I really mean that the bible is basically written to justify astrological events and basically copies or reinvents various pagan beliefs in the process. Jesus is not a unique character. Look up Bacchus/Dionysius, Horus, Mithra and so many others. From a different angle, Moses signifies the end of the age of Taurus, and the beginning of the age of Aries. Jesus signifies the end of the age of Aries and the beginning of the age of Pisces. The next age begins in something like 2150. Though this isn't necessarily true, it gives Christianity a much needed elegance.

As for Atheism, it is not a religion. Atheists have no particular reason to believe anything that any other Atheist believes, other than no belief in gods. If that's a religion than European, Republican and "holocaust-denism" should all be religions. That's stupid.

I don't eliminate all possibility of there being no God, nor do I eliminate all possibility of there being no invisible midget aliens on the moon. I do think it's incredibly improbable, and it'd be stupid to acknowledge that probability on a whim.

    • GeneraI_Beef

I was talking about people that are Atheists or Agnostics, but yes, people actually practising the religion they state as their own is a low, low percentage of Christians. I think I only know about one or two actual practising Christians.

I do not believe the bible was written as a record of history. Though portions of it may be accurate in that field. The most satisfactory explanation to me is that it's more related to astrological junk.

Sure, the numbers of religion aren't going down, but the percentage of the population that is religious is (except in The United States and I think one or two African countries) generally decreasing.

All the evidence in the world against you wouldn't make you a skeptic. You're not fooling anyone.

No, that's not right. A theory is very, very different to a scientific theory. Look it up smiley8.gif

It certainly doesn't look like you gave it a proper look, but I'm not really surprised. There's no point in me trying to disprove your beliefs, if that's going to happen it's going to be from your own effort.

That's just the name of the site. A skeptic is basically someone who is inclined to question or doubt an assertion.

Yes, I am an Atheist. That doesn't mean I believe in the Big Bang or evolution (even though I do); Atheism is just the disbelief in Gods.

You can't honestly believe that can you? It doesn't take a zoology degree to notice that Apes are the most similar animals to humans. Pigs? Come on now, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Science isn't "switching", it's refining. Ancient science wasn't really much science at all, but it was at least a start in the right direction, where they started thinking of things without having to relate things to Gods. You believe in science, just not when it inconveniences you or your beliefs. Funny that.

As for the big bang and evolution, I believe in them because they seem like the most plausible explanations. Evolution is all but proven, and the big bang has constantly mounting evidence to support it. "God did it" doesn't hold much scientific credit. If there was a mountain of evidence supporting "God did it" then I'd probably go with that. But there isn't. I wonder why...

Religion hasn't remained constant, as much as it's tried. You'd be stoned to death for practising religion as we do today back in ancient times. It's changed because it's becoming increasingly impossible for it to survive. It'll be gone soon enough, I don't doubt that. I personally welcome that, though other less "militant" (I'm not really that militant of an Atheist, but I am in comparison to others) Atheists may disagree.

Alrighty, here're two things that are false in the book of Mormon:

16:10 And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.

      Compasses didn't exist in 600BCE.

16:18 And it came to pass that as I, Nephi, went forth to slay food, behold, I did break my bow, which was made of fine steel; and after I did break my bow, behold, my brethren were angry with me because of the loss of my bow, for we did obtain no food.

      Steel didn't exist in 600BCE.

Those are just two examples, I found a handy site that goes over the book of Mormon word by word; highlighting anything that doesn't make much sense.

"im not sure whats being said in Geneses 6:3" doesn't really give me anything to continue on.

    • GeneraI_Beef

Well, the simplest example I can find is:

"My spirit shall not abide in man for ever, for he is flesh, but his days shall be a hundred and twenty years."

      - Genesis 6:3

      or

The days of our years are threescore years and ten.

      -Psalm 90:10

According to the bible our life is limited to either 120 or 70 years (that seems like an obvious contradiction, but we'll just put that aside), yet Jeanne Calment lived to 122.

I'd go into stuff like the world not being only 6000 years old or flat etc., but if you don't believe in science then there's no real point.

    • GeneraI_Beef

It's true, some churches do a lot of good. Many require a portion of one's income, many more spread hate. And of course, there are religiously motivated wars going on all the time. Not just Christian-based, but I'm not just saying Christians are delusional. But it's not just physical violence that's it's effecting. It's impeding scientific progress and causing prejudice, racism and other such discrimination. All this is besides the point though. I don't believe religion is necessary and the teaching of lies as an alternative to scientifically grounded knowledge (though I'm not saying we couldn't and won't improve on this, that's the great thing about science: it progresses) is just plain silly.

Scripture can be disproved, and has. People just make up excuses when this happens. Of course we can't prove that there is no god. We also can't disprove the invisible pink unicorn, or a teapot orbiting the sun (as so many have suggested). Just because we can't disprove something doesn't mean we should believe in it. And besides, you can't disprove Allah, Zeus, Horus or any number of other gods.

    • GeneraI_Beef

You don't have to be convinced that you're delusional to be delusional. In fact, it'd be strange if you were.

Intelligent design is a joke, no one takes it seriously.

    • GeneraI_Beef

delusion is "an erroneous belief that is held in the face of evidence to the contrary". Whether Religion is "nice" to believe in or not, whether you get something out of it or not, it is still delusion. Whether that delusion is "good" or not I'll leave that for you to decide.

I don't know much about the book of Mormon, but I do know it's even more bizarre than the bible and has absolutely no evidence to back up any of the wild claims.

    • GeneraI_Beef

I know exactly what I'm judging. Have you read the Qur'an? How about The Torah? How can you denounce Islam and Judaism without doing so?

So why is it that you believe in the Bible (and God forbid, the book of Mormon)?

    • GeneraI_Beef

I started reading it, got bored and gave up after Genesis. I've read scraps and passages other than that.

      Have you?

    • GeneraI_Beef

I'm not quite sure what you're saying, but I'll try to address the issues that you raise:

I do not know what happens after death. The most logical and scientific conclusion would simply be that your consciousness would cease to exist. Life's point is life. Not the precursor to something else. If you don't think life's good enough to live for the sake of living then by all means blow your brains out.

As for your "experiences", I'm sceptical. I think you're exaggerating for one, and also that things with small probabilities of occurring are not divine. Ancient peoples thought they were, but they were rather dunce. And not to rain on your parade, but I guarantee you're not the luckiest person on the planet.

    • GeneraI_Beef

      What the hell

In the old days you'd be stoned to death for that. We've sure strayed far from God's "perfect" word...

I don't like religion because it causes (among other things) discrimination, intolerance and stupidity. There are less harmful religions than others (Buddhism for example) and I'm not saying that people that are religious are necessarily "evil" or "bad" people, but they're very literally deluded.
