Yay! I got both my laptops and my Tivo set up on my wireless network! Woohoo!

It only took an hour, so that's pretty damn good considering I haven't ever managed to get three of anything working at one time.

Plus I've been getting kudos from clients at work. That's pretty fucking cool considering that I'm the new kid.

      Go ME!!

There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

I suspect some of you didn't get my brilliant Heinlein reference on my earlier journal, but that could be because I mangled it.

So, TITSTAAFL. There is too such thing as a free lunch.

My lunches were as follows - sit at my desk and work. Now I get free food while I sit at my desk and work! See? Free lunch!

In fact, when we get a real lunch room and not just a temporary conference/lunch room, I'm going to suggest it be named TITSTAAFL. Google will get it, I'm sure smiley8.gif

      Mmmm. Google food!

They had something not on the menu today - steak and mushrooms with bleu cheese.

      I love my job!

so I'm 98% moved. i still need to move my desktop and some other stuff over here (like, oh, the KITCHEN and BATHROOM!) but Eric's doing the cleanup at the duplex, so that's good.

I had taken off only Monday for this, but when i woke up today (after about 3 hours of crappy sleep) in screaming pain, well, I decided I'd better take off today too.

With that, I'm going back to bed - I think.

      At least the cable works!

    • Catching up

      bugdog

Well, we've been trying to get packed to move since... oh... the middle of July. Since Eric had that damn hernia repair he can't do much. I managed to nearly rip my right arm off after tripping over someone at the movie theater, so I'm out for packing. I finally nutted up and called someone to come pack. The packing and moving is going to cost me nearly a whole paycheck. Just over 1300 bucks, fuck... That half of the TV I want. That's the full road trip to Yellowstone and back we made last year. That's an Xbox elite with the games I want.

It's also a huge relief. No more re-fucking of my shoulder on a daily basis. Yay. No more sitting here nearly in tears because I can't get all our crap packed in time to move. The shoulder thing is a big deal, actually. Since I bought the Mustang and got a stick shift, having my right arm out of commission would be a really bad thing. It would mean not driving my car every day :(. I'm hoping my shoulder gets unfucked, but I'm worried that I've actually done damage to it. It hurts to raise my arm straight out, even to hit a light switch. It really hurts to pick up something. Crap.

So, anyway, on the happy good news side, on Monday, our office will be getting free lunches, Google style. The first week, it's going to be salads and sandwiches, the next week, they're going all out with hot food.

I'm going to post the menu for week one here sometime tonight. It's too cool not to share.

Another really REALLY cool Google perk is that they are totally dedicated to having their "soft" benefits (free food, etc) available at all their facilities. What does this really mean? It means that sometime in the next six to eight months, I'll be able to take one of my dogs to work with me! The free food is really nice, but getting to bring a dog to work tops that in a huge way.

Honestly, one of my pipe dreams was to go to work for Google one day. Seriously, I didn't figure I had a chance of ever working for them. They get literally thousands of applications a day. I am so happy I got this job and that we've been bought by Google!

We're hiring! California, Texas and a couple of world wide positions - UK, Switzerland and soon in Japan.

Why work for Postini? Let's see, we just got bought by Google... we met 3 out of 4 of the goals set by the company, so we all got $200 Amazon gift certificates (Would be 300 if we met all 4 - and they're reviewing that 4th one...), on Tuesday we had a Team Building exercise that involved beer and pool (no real team building involved) and the pay just plain rocks.

      bugdog

Well, it's raining yet again. I think we've had 2 days with no rain in the last 60 days - seriously. It's insane.

So I'm supposed to go to a going away party for a coworker I don't know very well. I like the guy, he's seriously cool and most of my coworkers will be there too. I *know* I should go. Seriously, I should go. The thing is, it won't just be my coworkers, there will be STRANGERS there too. I am not good in this kind of social situation. They freak me out.

Once again, my coworkers are yanking me out of my comfort zone - and they have no clue. If I didn't genuinely like them, I wouldn't even think about leaving the house.

So what do you wear to a stranger's house for a mostly unknown coworker's going away keg party? In the rain. Alone.

I know the guy I'm friends with will be there, but he's bringing his new boyfriend, so I clearly can't follow him around like a lost puppy all night.

I really do like these people, I'm just not social like this, I guess. I'd like to be, so I'll probably make myself go out tonight. I'll probably have a great deal of fun. But I absolutely dread going.

    • Out of my comfort zone

      bugdog

Ok, I'm very much a "normal" food eater. I'm not overly picky, but after 36+ years of eating food, I know what I like and I tend not to stray from the path. Italian, Tex-Mex, Interior Mexican, American, main stream Japanese and Chinese (Americanized, I'm sure) are all great. I probably left out a few things and no doubt all the foreign food is also Americanized, but I have range.

So tonight we had a team dinner at a place called Mars. They have Asian Fusion, which is apparently Asian food with a French influence (I had to ask the guy who recommended the place.) Not only is this place way out of my food comfort zone, it's also out of my general price range, most especially if I'm paying lots of money for food I'm not dead solid certain I'll love.

I admit that I kidded my work friend, Brian, about the menu. When he said the Tuna Tartare was awesome, I said, "What, is that like cat food? Fancy feast?" I looked at the menu online and flat out was dreading dinner. I didn't know what any of the spices were going to taste like and there were things on the menu I had to look up. Bad enough that I don't like ordering something I can't pronounce... but something that I have no idea what it is? Ok, ok, I'm a provincial freak. Fine. I sure wasn't going into that place with out doing some research and I sure as HELL wasn't going in there sounding like some idiot redneck fuckstick. It's ok to kid your coworker about eating cat food when you're at work -you don't do it at the restaurant, right? Good.

So yeah, dreading dinner, but hey, I wasn't paying for it -the company was. If I didn't like something, I could get a burger on the way home.

The food there was fucking AWESOME. The Tuna Tartare (Spicy Ahi Tuna Tartare) was amazing. It looked like high end cat food (I guess, I don't have cats) with some sprouts and green leafy stuff around it. There were some sort of crunchy triangles of stuff to eat it on. I wasn't enthusiastic about it, but I swore I'd try it. It smelled good, not at all like fish (a big plus) and certainly not like any tuna I'd ever had. It tasted fucking amazing. I can't even begin to tell you how good it was - it practically melted in my mouth - it was spicy, garlicky and just a tiny tiny bit sweet. Simply amazing. I could have just had that for dinner.

Now, I was sold at this point and would have gone way far out for my entree, but we'd ordered before the appetizers were brought out. I ordered the Grilled Beef Tenderloin, medium rare. It came with the best garlic mashed potatoes I have ever had in my life and the steak? OMG. It was better than anything I've ever had. Better than I've had at some of the steakhouses here in town. Just plain awesome. Of course, it was like 28 bucks. I'm not entirely certain it was 28 bucks worth of good.... but it was damn close. I couldn't do better at home, that's for damn sure.

I told Brian he was right, the food was amazing and that I was wrong to doubt him (heh) but I still couldn't believe how good cat food was. I waited until after we left the restaurant to make the cat food remark though :)

Well, Google and Postini announced today that Google was buying Postini. I work for Postini.

Does this mean that I work for Google now or do I work for Google when the deal closes sometime in September?

Either way, I work for a freaking cool ass company!

wow, your comment is exactly what I hear from just about every single home depot employee I talk to. I am not sure if there is a single one that actually agree's with anything bob did for the company, I mean he may have made the company some money, but the employees and the stock holders both got screwed in the meantime. If you have unhappy/unprofessional employee's, then the customers will just pass over and go to the nearest lows.

And I know what you mean about having something on a busy day go wrong, I work the night crew, so I just stock the shelves, no talking or working with customers, but because of that, I see how much product comes into a store, and yeah, paint sells a crap load of product, shut that down for a while, they are screwed. I am not sure about your store, but my store seems to think training is optional -_-

bleah, too much homedepot hate right now, need breather
