I'm posting this from my company laptop in my upgraded mini suite in San Carlos!

This laptop is SWEET!!! It's a Dell Latitude D620, Intel Core 2 DUo, XP, 1GB RAM, 40GB HD, DVD player, wireless and I think it will even make coffee if I were to ask it nicely. It might iron my shirts too.

They upgraded our rooms from normal rooms to mini-suites. That means the room is about the same size as a double king size room, but instead of two beds, it has a sofa, desk and little office area next to the bed. It's a big farking room and it's nice :)

The flight was long and noisy as hell, but that was fine... and naturally something DID go wrong. I twisted my right knee when I was trying to get into my middle seat with too much crap. I am clearly not a seasoned traveler, heh. It made a loud and horrible pop when I was scooting down the seats and it hurt enough to make things go fuzzy. The good news is that It didn't swell and I could stand on it with no major problems when the flight landed. It's hurting some right now. I've got ice on it and will be purchasing some sort of compression bandage tomorrow. I don't suppose it's the sort of injury that could have kept me from making this trip out here, but it couldn't have been at a much worse time.

Oooh, we also got a Jeep Something to drive while we're here and my boss doesn't really like driving much :) I know that a couple of nights this week she's got to work on a presentation (or two) and she said I could take the Jeep out and do what ever I wanted! Woohoo!! She's paying for everything (food included) because it's a lot easier for her to expense things than it would be for me to do it, so the cash I have is fun money :) Heh, fun money and ACE bandage money smiley8.gif

Almost forgot, some of you will really appreciate this. Our health insurance is $19 a month! It's Blue Cross CA PPO, which I was worried about, but it turns out the benefits are actually better than what Eric and I have through the city of Houston (they have HMO Blue of Texas). I can insure us both for less than $150 a month. It's just over $400 for us right now. Talk about a pay raise!

Ok, had to tell y'all what was up. I'm going to take a shower and chill for a bit before I pass out. I'll be around and I promise to take lots of pictures - and I'll share them when I get back. I didn't bring my camera cable connection (but I did bring 4gb of SD cards, heh)... I figure if that's the worst thing I've forgotten then I'm in GREAT shape~!

(this post has not been spell checked and may contain glaring errors... but I don't care, so NYAH NYAH~!)

Ok, I'm beginning to realize that no one is going to appear at my door and say, "Oh, sorry, we made a mistake. We actually hired someone else..." and that tomorrow at this time I'll be on the ground in San Jose, on my way to my nice little hotel in San Carlos, ready for a week of company boot camp... AHHHHHH!!!!

I've got to take Crash over to my parents' house, Tippy to my sister's house (and all the stuff that goes with the dogs - crate, food, bed, toys, bowls), then I have to pack - must have clothing, meds, toiletries, camera, batteries and charger, phone and charger, paperwork, oh god, what am I forgetting? Got to have a good book, preferably paperback... I don't have an MP3 player, so do I want to take the CD player that will play MP3 cds? I will be getting a laptop from work (!!!) that I can take with me (and will take with me), so maybe I don't need a CD player...

Heh, the dogs know something is up and they're jumpy, too.

Ok, gotta go take a dog over to my parents' house.

    • Got a new job

So, I got the good and challenging job. Good thing, too because my job at Home Depot went away... anyway, I start on Monday and Monday night I'm flying to San Jose for training in San Carlos for a week. Woohoo! And the pay I was worried about? It outstrips the L2 job with Home Depot by about ... oh, four grand a year.

I'm a happy camper, but I have no idea what I'll be doing that week. It's company boot camp, they say, so that will be cool, but what about all those other hours in the day? I mean, if it were in Las Vegas, I'd have a clue what to do with myself in the off time, but San Carlos? It's 20 miles from San Francisco, but that doesn't help me much since I've never been there either. I have the amazing super ability to sleep 16 hours a day, but somehow that doesn't sound like the best idea.

Also, if any of you have flown in the last year, I'd welcome any tips there. You know, 3 oz bottles and approved clear baggies and all that dumb crap... I haven't flown since 2004 and they weren't as weird about things then.

I'm excited and anxious and just plain worried, but not really worried (if that makes sense at all). My poor doggies will be separated that week - my sister is taking care of Tippy and Crash is staying with my parents.

Ooo, and I'll be home that Friday night in time for Stargate :) so that's good.

Ok, I have a question for all you military folks out there.

Why did the US military invert their chevrons? I know they did it around the end of the 19th century, and that there was a time when chevrons were worn both up and down, but why did they do it?

I did a quick search on this, but didn't find what I was looking for, so I'm hoping one of you guys knows this. I'm usually really good at finding stuff like this, but I'm tired today smiley8.gif .

I have a job interview on Monday... and it's for a job that might actually be a challenge and that worries me. I haven't had a challenging job in a while. I don't know what the pay is, which concerns me, but we've been told that all the level 1 calls will have been transitioned to India by the end of April. I also want to make it to the end of March so I can get my 2 weeks vacation ;).

Then there is also a slim chance that I might get offered a Level 2 help desk job with Home Depot. They've outsourced all the level 1 jobs to India, so this would be the only way to stay there. Two of the people in the group I worked with quit in the last month and they really want to replace them. It would be easy, some possible challenge and I'd be working with my friends again. It's about 3K more a year than I'm making now, so I'd certainly take it.

And so now I have the concern - all things being equal, if I get offered both jobs and the pay similar enough... do I stay where I'm comfortable and have friends or do I go someplace with a future and challenge.... GAH! I'd probably wimp out and stay with THD. If I do that, I might get to travel to India and that would be neat... but this other job has training in California (what to do with the dogs???) for a couple of weeks.

Ah hell, no sense worrying about it right now. The interview isn't until Monday and I have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting an L2 offer thanks to past bad acts smiley0.gif

Right, off to get something to eat.

      bugdog

What? I haven't seen it yet?

      Nope.

      Why, you ask?

Because Eric is back in town and we have to go see it in IMAX. In San Antonio. 75 miles away.

We had already bought tickets to go see it at 2p today, but we stayed up too damn late and he didn't want to get up. So there went $22.50. So tomorrow night at 10pm, we will be in San Antonio. Never mind that it's about an hour and a half drive (depending on traffic - about an hour the way Eric drives). Never mind that I work from 5am to 2pm. ("You can sleep in the car on the way back," he says.) Never mind that there are four or five perfectly good theaters here in Austin showing 300 (and I can get a beer at two of them).

No, we have to go see it in IMAX.

And for some odd reason, we couldn't have gone yesterday, either - another of my two days off.

So, anyway, it better be exactly as awesome as everyone seems to be saying it is. More awesome, even.*

(also, I should be asleep right now, but I'm not. Can't sleep for whatever reason.)

*Yeah, I really want to see 300 and IMAX is neat and all, but Jesus Haploid Christ, why won't he wait until my next day off?

Ok, folks, I'm probably going to disappear for a while (again) but this time it's because I won't have a computer with access to the site.

Eric is headed off to SC to visit his army buddy, Brian, and he's taking the laptop - the only computer we currently have. I have all the parts to build a new PC, but I don't know if I'm going to be lazy and not do it for a month or if not having the Internet is going to light a fire under my lazy ass and I'll get it knocked together tomorrow.

It all depends on what's on TV and whether I decide to get hooked on Oblivion again ;-)

Anyway, I'll be back when I get that thing built.

OMG. I don't even want to think about how much spam is going to build up in my roadrunner email account....

    • Gearing up for a new build...

      bugdog

Ok, guys, I need a little help. I'm gearing up to build a new PC (finally) and I think I'm going to need some help here on some of the parts. I've got everything I need, but Eric bought it all several months ago and isn't entirely certain what the specs are for some of the parts. I've done some digging and gotten most of what I need (manuals and so on), but I have a question...

Here's what I've got that I have a quesiton about:
Soyo Dragon Ultra P4x400 Platinum w/ 512MB ram (built in sound and nic, AGP Pro)
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO 8x AGP 128 MB ram

The question is about is the ATI 8x AGP card and the AGP Pro slot on the MB. From what I can find, the only difference between the AGP and AGP pro is some power thing... and the 8x should work with it. I want to verify that it will work, and I also want to get back up to speed on AGP (especially regarding voltages because this seems to be confusing me). Adding to that confusion is the fact that the video card has "pro" in the name. GAH!

I used to be high speed on this. Since I started working for Home Depot, my skills have taken a complete nose dive where hardware is concerned.

I did look up what the Pro in AGP Pro mean, which is the only reason I think the 8x card I have will work at all, but I have concerns about the whole voltage issue and I couldn't find clarification that said outright "do this if you have this..." (couldn't find AGP for Dummies).

I might have some more questions later :) and if this isn't clear (and it might not be clear at all - I can't tell), let me know. (or if I left off information that y'all need...)

      Ice is nice!

There you go. All those pictures from that link are in my yard. There's not much of anything on the ground - just some white areas. The dogs like it - Tippy seems to delight in racing up and down the fence, pounding the ice into slush into mud, then running into the house and leaving muddy little dog prints everywhere. Evil, evil dog. She seems faster than usual today, so grabbing her on the way in to wipe off her feet (and legs and chest) isn't exactly working...

Here is a wonderful example of the unfairness of life.

I love paint, ink, paper, pens, pencils - everything from the history of them to the feel of them. I even enjoy the mundane features of these things, right down to watching a paint dispenser at a hardware store dispense paint. The flow of the colorant just makes me happy. The flow of ink from a new pen onto new paper is as satisfying to me as chocolate ice cream is to others.

I love color. I don't think many people understand my excitement at seeing something large painted in a color I've never seen before - it's usually a car, but it can be a wall or the trim on a house. If I've never seen that color, I feel like I've won a prize.

What's the unfair part about this? I don't have any artistic talent and I don't have the time to learn. I would love to do oil paintings, water colors, even pencil sketches, but my stuff never looks remotely like what I want it to. I have things in my head I want to put on paper (usually because I didn't have my camera with me - or the camera didn't accurately record the light that I was seeing), but no way to do it.

I did decide to do something about it. I bought the Idiot's Guide to Drawing. The book is well written and right up front explains that what you do at first is going to suck, so get over it and get on with it. It has some good exercises in it and I feel like I can learn some basics from the book - maybe even enough so that I can do some simple sketches of what's in my head.

What brought this on? Modern Marvels on the History Channel. I've just watched an hour on the technology and history of ink and another on paint. Yep, I just spent a happy two hours learning about ink and paint. Seriously cool stuff.

So, yeah, this is how my brain runs.

Neat link - Pigments Through the Ages
Also, my current favorite color is Ultramarine. All my most favorite colors are blues, but there is one dark blue/purple color that I saw in an issue of Architectural Digest once. It was painted on a wall in Morocco and it was the kind of color that you could lose yourself in. Ultramarine is not quite dark enough, but it's as close as you can get with web colors.

I miss Bug and Mouse, but I know they're eating elves in doggy heaven right now.

I'm on the five am to two pm shift right now at work (with Tuesday and Wednesday off) so I really don't know when I'm supposed to be awake/asleep except that I should remain awake during the hours of five to two. It's very weird for me to leave work and have it be daylight. It's even stranger to go to "lunch" at 8am.

I've never been a morning person, but once I convinced myself that this was more of a middle of the damn night shift, it was sort of ok. I couldn't do it without a DVR (I'd miss too much good stuff on TV), so yay!

Added bonus - my next two weekends are 3 day weekends! Sure, I have to work Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, except not really because I leave work at 2! And have the next three days off! WOOHOO!!!

So that's my current excuse for not being around right now. Still down to one laptop, both pc's are toast, got more Oblivion to play and also have a ton of Rome to watch before season 2 starts in January.
