I recently finished a prequel book too Halo. entitled Halo:Contact Harvest. It looks at the first contact between the covenant and humans.
I gave myself a few days too cool off, and still I am astounded at how well that book was written, the characters jump off the page... I felt so much for the doomed AI on the planet... everything was perfectly written... the epilogue is by far one of the saddest things I've read.
But this isn't why I am journaling about it.
I have recently heard that Spielberg is looking at creating the Halo movie (the one that was dropped by Peter Jackson and co.)
This saddens me... for a few reasons.
1. The Halo storyline is 15 hours or so in length, you can't cut that down without lots of things being skipped over, and I fear that some of the most important parts will be lost... Cortana and John's relationship being the main one.
2. Spielberg tends to destroy things as often as he creates masterpieces.
3. Master Chief isn't the right character to introduce someone to the Halo universe. You need someone you can relate to, and he isn't it. Not unless you want to spend the time builiding up his relationship with Cortana... which they wont.
Halo: Contact Harvest, on the other hand has Johnson, a character that is prevalent throughout all the other movies, so can be easily used as a way to link any future movies. He is broken at the start and through the course of the book finds himself again, it shows the horror of war, and the courage of being human.
And most importantly the Covenant have a strong showing in the story, you see why they do what they do, not because they detest humanity, but because the humans are the proof that there faith is a lie.
Anyway Halo: Contact Harvest would make a much better movie if handled well... I can only hope they handle it well.
Though truthfully I would prefer a story that was made for the Big Screen, something written specifically as a movie script, that way you don't alienate any fans of any story already made, and you don't run the risk of destroying the real reasons for actions within a story.
This brings me to Harry Potter 6.
They left SOOO MANY THINGS UNDERDEVELOPED! And I have no idea why they did for the most part. They could have set up Tonks a lot better than they did, but they decided that they wouldn't, they didn't show Harry being more obsessed with Malfoy, they didn't show the fight at the end... what the fuck was with that, if no one was going to challenge them why bring in 4 fucking Death Eater's. and why the fuck wasn't Harry stunned by Dumbledore, it goes against Harry's character completely, what was with Harry not hiding the book himself, why did Ginny have to be the one to take him to the room?
And why was it that she made the move on him... there was little enough of that actual relationship within the book as it is, why remove it completely (oh I know its mentioned that he is seeing her, but damn, one kiss and thats all that is shown)
The only storyline within that movie that I appreciated was Malfoy's, that was actually really well done, Kudo's to the actor... whats his name. he really made you believe that Malfoy was at breaking point.

It's amazing the way juxtaposition can make you emotionally invested in a scene that much more.
Just finished watching an episode of Babylon 5 (omg its good) and at the end there was the juxtaposition of a guy about to be beaten to death (quite literally, only his head was to be left intact so he could be identified) and a Gospel singer. (you know like from the Blues Brothers)
Always seen the scenes where they play classical piano over the top of battles. and they works well, first time I have seen a upbeat song so completely capture the sort of desperation that a character is feeling in their last moments.
(on a related note, i felt I had to get this down before I forgot about it, I plan on using something like this someday. [reminder to self. Babylon 5 season 3 - episode 20 - And The Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place.] remember.)
Also the guy getting beaten to death was a bad guy. I think the music would have worked better if it was a good guy. then instead of a pang of sadness I would have teared up.
Also would have been a little better if the commercial break was still in, cause of the way it fades out. need a bigger pause before the story goes on. (first time ever I have said that commercials could work to help a story)
Watching - Babylon 5. 2 Guys and a Girl
Finishing Watching - Dollhouse (amazing end, and some really unexpected twists)
Chinatown - OMG!!! Brilliant movie, might have mentioned it before... brilliant still!
Tears of the Sun - Not a bad movie, surprised me a little when Bruce Willis' character didn't spell out a plot point (like so many action movies do now days) And it was morally dubious at parts, which is something I like to see in these kind of movies. (oh and the final fight scene BRILLIANT!)
Waiting - It has Ryan Reynolds and Justin Long, how can it not be good!
Movies I have but haven't seen yet:
Flags of our fathers - Still need to check this one out, I really respect the fact that Clint Eastwood (a republican) made both sides into movies. that is really good. really respect him for that.
Anyway apart from that I need to get to bed. sleep well (or wake well or whatever)

I have this ability to promise to do things on this site that I never get around to doing.
Was going to start writing up another story.
I was going to start reading through more journals.
But truthfully... I just don;t do anything much at the moment.
My days consist of getting up watching a bunch of shows, usually started with a rewatch of some 30 rock (STILL LOVE IT) then it goes to the latest show I am watching. Currently that is Huff, Babylon 5.
Gotta start watching Supernatural soon, gotta get season 1 of My Name is Earl... And the first few episodes on Chuck....
Oh and Robin Hood... Watching for the Robin/Marian relationship.
I was going to offer you all a story in this space, but well... I can't be bothered.
Night all Canon
Movie - Chinatown (amazing I recommend it for everyone)
TV Show - Huff (quite good, and highly emotional. Also I now know what a Rainbow Party is)
Book - None
Music - Auto Tune the News - Number 5 (it's a youtube video... greta song. look it up)

Finally watching the NCIS Season 2 finale.
I have heard about it for a while, and i knew that Kate dies, cause well I have seen episodes in season 6. And I watched an episode of season 3 as well I think.
OMG that was one of the most amazing death scenes.. only because it was so closed. no prolonged moments no final death confessions. Season 3 opener. Amazing way to show how Tony and Gibbs are handling her death.

David Eddings was one of the first fantasy writers I ever read.
The Belgarion series is still one I can pick up at any moment and sink right in.
I identified with the main character and loved the other characters in the series.
While I say this I will mention that the characters are at times quite 2 dimensional.
I mention this all because David Eddings has died

It's 2:28am right now.
The Multimedia Labs got a facelift mid way through this semester and they replaced all the old (really old) Power Mac G5's with Shiny new iMac's and the old (ish) iMac's with new iMac's.
This is relevant to me because the Tech guys decided to sell of the old G5's for $250. Since I have never had a desktop computer I leapt at the chance. So now I have a huge hunch of a Slow Thinker in my room.
It feels good to know that when I get my laptop back I can haul it around wherever I go without fear of losing precious time downloading something or unplugging my hard drives. (of which I have 2 Terabytes worth... 1.3 of which is full, I think i will need another one soon)
I mentioned that it died. I took it into an Apple tech and he looked it over and said that it could be because of a graphics card defect that occurred in manufacture (Nvidia released a statement about it a while ago...as did Apple)
and if it was it was covered under warranty, I got a call back around 11 hours ago now (3pm for me) and was told that it had been repaired and was awaiting my pickup, indeed covered under warranty (which makes me think that the graphics card replacements are easy to get)
I am sorta upset that my computer didn't suffer a more permanent problem due to the graphics card the new line has come out and they look and perform NICE! kinda wish i had been given one cause of a warranty thing. haha! I think I am just greedy, hehe I should be glad my laptop is ok.
The other thing I should talk about is my exam and my final assignments.
I got 77.5% for my one and only exam and I also got 77.5% for my final assessment piece in the same subject. which means that I am going to pass with an overall Distinction Woo for me!
I have finally finished off the last assessment piece for Video Production and I will be uploading the pieces we did for everyone to look at if they want. (they aren't really good)
I still have to write 2000 words for Gender and Genre in Short Fiction, this is going to kill me. I doubt I will get it done anytime soon, but I can hope.
After that last piece is handed in I am officially finished till September. which is exciting!
And now for the reason I am up so late.
I have finally decided to relook at the footage that was taken of the GOR (Great Ocean Road) Trip me and a bunch of friends went on in December last year, I really want to have a working copy of it finished before the end of July.
This will also include getting a Jumper made, which has the places we stayed and the quote of the day for each place.
I will think about putting some of that footage online, but I can't promise you much, there are many non disclosure agreements with the footage (mainly cause a lot of it is personal and or hilariously embarrassing)
Liam in a spa.... need I say more.
Anyways it is now 2:40am and I am about to get to bed.
But before I do.
Still looking forward to watching:The Nines
Music of the moment: Opshop
TV show of the moment: American Dad Season 4
Book of the Moment: NOT The Flood (absolutely ridiculous writing makes me want to throw up!) (btw its the halo 1 story line with added perspectives, it isn't good trust me)
Game of the moment: Halo ODST! OMG IT LOOKS AMAZING! and the characters look well thought out and a lot better written than The Flood (who the fuck decides that the lines from the cinematic cut scenes should be changed around when writing a good following the game, who the fuck!)
I have decided i am going to start writing a short story within the journal entry section... I will probably start on saturday night, when I finish off Gender and Genre. I'll see you all then.
PS. 2:45am now.
EDIT# it took 4 minutes to tell me that it had been posted.. so now it's 2:49am. I am so tired!
