      *opens Roosterteeth.com*

*blows off large layer of dust*

      This thing on?

I pretty much only use my Roosterteeth profile to talk about music, which is perfectly fine with me. I need someplace to put my rambling thoughts, and my Facebook friends only seem interested in my political views and pictures of my cats.

Anyway, here are some songs I'm really into at the moment.

      "IDGAF" by Dua Lipa

I'll admit, I didn't get the Dua Lipa thing at first. I knew she was really popular, but she just never struck a chord with me. "New Rules" was fine, but it's not something I would seek out. "IDGAF", however, is right in my wheelhouse. That's it, I'm on board. I get it now.

"Make Me Feel" by Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is the spiritual successor to Prince (and that's not blasphemy - they worked together on Monae's previous album), and it has never been as apparent as it is in "Make Me Feel". This is modern "old school" - similar to what Bruno Mars does, but amped up to 11.

"Over and Over and Over" by Jack White

I like Jack White, despite how freakin weird he is. This is my favorite of his solo work to date, though I'm sure in another year or two, he's going to wow me with something else I didn't see coming.

      "Zombie" by Bad Wolves

Not as good as the original (which would have been impossible anyway) but it's different enough while sticking to the original script enough to make it a worthy cover.

      "Flamingo" by Kero Kero Bonito

This is an older song - came out in 2016 - but it is fabulous. It's catchy and upbeat while having a great message behind it. I'm becoming obsessed with KKB as a response. The song "Sick Beat" drops a Tomb Raider reference, which also made it make this list, as well.

      "Sorry" by Halsey

Halsey's last several singles have been masterpieces. Sorry for ever doubting you, Halsey.

    • My Top 5 Hits Of 2017 (so far)

      centurionmac

I've had friends my mine lament that 2017 has been a bad year for music. I can't say I necessarily blame them - a lot of the hits have either been incredibly boring, unintelligible EDM, or both (looking at you, Chainsmokers). If you wanted to to take this year off from music and just catch up on the stuff you may have missed in the past couple of years, I would completely understand.

However, I am still a music buff, and there is still plenty of stuff I have liked this year, so I feel like I need to recognize this. So, here are my top 5 hits of the year so far.

NOTE: I completely forgot about the International Women's Day Playlist I did two months ago. Some of these songs are going to overlap.

Honorable Mention: "Hard Times" by Paramore

Full disclosure, I was a huge Paramore fan. They were my favorite band in college, and is one of the few concerts I traveled to see. "Riot!" remains my favorite album of all time. I still like them, and the two songs they've released on their new album, I have gotten into. They're less Paramore of old, though, and more like CHVRCHES. I'm perfectly ok with that, for the record; however, if you were a diehard fan of Paramore in the past and you told me you hated them now, I would understand. They don't make the same music they made 10 years ago. I don't necessarily listen to the same music I did 10 years ago, though, so as they've evolved, so have I. I hope people give them a chance, at least.

      5): "Green Light" by Lorde

Still love Lorde. As plenty of singers have tries to emulate her sound, Lorde has reminded people that she is, well, Lorde of the genre.

      4) "Judas" by Fozzy

This surprised me. I have always been aware of Fozzy - I grew up a wrestling fan, after all - but I never got into them. They exist in that genre of music that I just never really crossed into. This song, however, hits all the notes for me. I guess one of the things that always turned me off in the past was Chris Jericho's voice, but he sounds fine here. I'm also a sucker for catchy choruses. I'm an advertiser's dream and a critic's nightmare. I never claimed to be cool.

      3) "Sleepover" by Hayley Kiyoko

I raved about this song two months ago and my thoughts remain the same. Great voice and great composition. I've recently going down a Hayley Kiyoko rabbit hole. A lot of good stuff. Out of all the Lana Del Rey-esque artists, she seems to be the one who keeps it the most lighthearted.

      2) "Stay" by Zedd and Alessia Cara

There have been a plethora of hits by EDM artists this year, and a lot of them, in my opinion, haven't been great. This one, however, is wonderful. I don't know who the credit goes to more - Zedd for delivering a great beat, or Alessia Cara for nailing the vocals. I lean more towards Alessia Cara, because I've seen several works from her that impress me. I look forward to more.

      1) "I Feel It Coming" by The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk

My favorite genre of music seems to be "throwback to a previous era". The artist best known for that was Bruno Mars, who channeled Prince and the 70's era of funk in some of his most recent works. The Weeknd, however, seems to be channeling late 80's Michael Jackson with this R&B ballad. Daft Punk injects the right amount without overpowering the song, and what is left is just an awesome mixture of a great beat, wonderfully written lyrics, and a phenomenal vocal performance by The Weeknd.

    • International Women's Day playlist

      centurionmac

Happy International Women's Day to all. New music has been released from women artists in the recent weeks, all of which I am really digging and I find to be fantastic. If you're looking to add some music to your playlist, here are some great suggestions.

      "Sleepover" by Hayley Kiyoko

Has been on my radar since her breakout single "Girls Like Girls", but this is the song I've enjoyed most, to be honest. Kiyoko really shows off her pipes in this one, and it's beautifully written. Vaulted me to fan status with this one.

      "Love" by Lana Del Rey

This is Lana Del Rey at her best - toned down, laid back, just singing. It's also a toned down song that isn't depressing, which is a bit of a rarity for Del Rey. I've been listening to this one on repeat for the past several days.

      "Green Light" by Lorde

March is a good month. I don't care if I get shot in the foot tomorrow, it will be a good month thanks to Lorde releasing her first single since "Yellow Flicker Beat" in 2014. She's amazing, and while "Green Light" isn't my favorite song of hers ("Team" still takes that spot for me), it's still Lorde, and it's still great.

"Stay" by Zedd and Alessia Cara

I'm all in on Alessia Cara at this point. Her collaboration with Zedd is the next chapter in a the great career Cara is building.

"How Far I'll Go" by Auli'i Cravalho

I may have just seen "Moana".

      Part 2: The Requestioning

    • R.I.P Christina Grimmie

      centurionmac

I did not quite know how to go about this post. I had a long journal already written and ready to be published, that discussed my grief and how this "celebrity death", unlike most others, were going to be harder for me to get over. Ultimately, though, I deleted it. Instead, I'm just going to link to some videos to show those, who did not know Christina Grimmie, why it was that I was such a big fan. Forgive me if some of these events are either out of order or if I do not get the details correct.

The very first video I saw was her cover of "Just A Dream" with Sam Tsui, one of the greatest covers I have ever heard. Apparently, that's what caught the eye of a lot of other fans, as well. Her fan base erupted, and it was almost completely organic. She wasn't all over the radio. She hadn't made any television appearances. She built a fan base thanks to her talent.

As people subscribed to her channel for the music, they stayed for Christina's personality. She was always keeping her fans up to date as often as she could, and if she wasn't performing covers, she was just simply uploading Vlogs. She released her LP "Find Me", featuring her first single "Advice", in 2011 after touring with Selena Gomez. Selena and Christina's collaboration formed a friendship between the two, which was amplified for a series of Kinect commercials in 2011.

She released a full album with original music in 2013 called "With Love". One of the best songs from that album has to be "Feelin' Good", which includes a pretty cool video, where fans of hers submitted videos of themselves singing her song.

Christina was a contestant on "The Voice" in 2014, where her voice would be heard by a mainstream audience for the first time. She crushed it with several of her performances - "Wrecking Ball" is regarded as one of the best, but my personal favorite was "Hold On (We're Going Home)" She finished in third place, but this was going to be moment of her breakout.

She released her first album on a major label after her appearance on The Voice, with "Must Be Love" as the lead single. She left Island Records in 2015, but was still working on music, including an EDM collaboration with Diamond Eyes titled "Stay With Me". Her second EP, Side A, was released back in February, and was in the midst of touring and working on another EP when she was tragically killed last night.

There is no rationalizing this. There is just pain and hurt. Be kind to one another, because Lord knows the world isn't going to be kind to us.

"Rising Star". That's the award iHeartRadio gave her just last year. Let's hope that star never burns out.

    • Songs I'm Digging At The Moment

      centurionmac

In the past, I have done a "top 10 Songs" list, usually at the end of the year, and while I always enjoyed doing that, I've come to the realization that my lists were always skewed towards songs that came out towards the end of the year. So, instead of doing that, I decided to, once and a while, make a journal discussing the songs I'm listening to at the moment, and maybe either connect with people who are digging the same songs, or get more people to listen.

      "Final Song" by MØ

MØ (and I totally copy/pasted that) has slowly been creeping up my list of favorite artists. Two of her songs ("Kamikaze" and "Lean On") made my Top 10 list last year, and this is the first song she's released this year. It's not as good as her previous two smashes, but it's very impressive. Give MØ a listen if you haven't heard her yet.

      "Wild Things" by Alessia Cara

The oldest song on this list, as it was officially released last year, but it's caught a lot of of steam recently. Cara was apparently a bit of a YouTube sensation prior to this song - this was the first song of hers that I've actually heard, but her voice works perfectly with the tone of the song. And this is all Cara - the arrangement is good, but the song doesn't have any punch to it if Cara doesn't add it herself. You'll come to the same conclusion when you listen to her other stuff. I recommend "Scars To Your Beautiful" as a follow-up.

      "Save My Soul" by JoJo

This is the first single released by JoJo (of "Leave (Get Out") fame) in 10 years thanks to her legal battles with her previous record label, and it is a slam dunk. Sometimes, when pop stars get big in the early '00s, the thing that sinks their career is that they're unable to evolve. JoJo has completely evolved, moving away from production value and relying fully on the power of her voice. The video is directed by Zelda Williams, and it's pretty amazing, as well. So far, this is my song of the year.

The Entire "Dangerous Woman" Album by Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is my new pop princess. "My Everything" was an amazing album, as many sophomore albums are, so I was concerned about whether or not "Dangerous Woman" would be a let down. Not at all. It's one of the few albums I can listen to all the way through. I linked "Dangerous Woman", the first single off the album, because it's probably the best song on the album, but really, dive in anywhere.

"Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" by Adele

I really like Adele. I can't say I dislike a single Adele song. That being said, "Hello" was a little disappointing to me. Plus, while I like Adele, I was never as in love with her as my mother is (she claims Adele is the greatest singer she's ever heard). If Adele made another album full of slow ballads, no one would have blamed her. Which is why "Send My Love" is impressive. It's actually pretty upbeat, and shows Adele can belt it out with more than just a piano arrangement behind her.

    • Leaving VAVEL

      centurionmac

As those of you who know me are aware of, I have been writing for the international sports web site VAVEL for the past year. I focused primarily on golf, but I also write on niche sports, such as gymnastics and figure skating, and also wrote articles for Rooster Teeth shows, specifically RWBY. It was a fun time, and I enjoyed every minute of my writing for VAVEL.

Over the past couple of months, however, VAVEL has undergone some transitional changes. Several writers and editors have left, being replaced with new writers, and our editor-in-chief stepped down. They all had their various reasons for leaving, which they did not clue me in on, but it made me come to a realization. VAVEL is an up and coming web site that requires writers and editors who are going to work hard to improve their position on the internet, and who are willing to sacrifice for their craft in order to get better.

That, honestly, just isn't me. The passion isn't there for that. And that means it's time for me to leave.

Writing for VAVEL showed me a lot. It improved my writing skills. It gave me a forum to show off my work to a global audience. It allowed me to showcase sports that often get ignored by modern media. I will forever be grateful to them for bringing me on and giving me that opportunity. But it's time to go, and hand the reigns to the next class of wonderful writers.

Right now, I plan on taking some time away from writing, and focusing more time on my actual workplace . My time as a writer, however, isn't completely over. I hope to one day find a new home, or bring back my old golf blog, and continue writing. But I need a break. I need to miss it. That could be days, or it could be months. Who knows?

    • "When (Blank) Happens, I'll Be Ok"

      centurionmac

I have no idea how many times I have said this, either to myself or to others.

"Once I graduate college, I'll be fine."

"Once I move out of my parents', I'll be fine."

"Once I get a job, I'll be fine."

"Once I make some money, I'll be fine."

I kept telling myself that my depression was a product of my circumstances, and not an issue within me. That somehow I would be better if I set some arbitrary goals that had nothing to do with my overall wellness and happiness.

But that's not the case. Not at all.

I have been at my job now for over a month, and I honestly enjoy it. I work on social media, which is something I did on my free time anyway. I work on marketing strategies, and it's a pretty laid back job with people I enjoy working with. And yet, there have been days when I come home feeling a mental weight on my shoulders.

It takes a lot to admit that you're sick, and I am. Which is why it is important to reach out, even if you think your depression is because of your circumstances. It may be, and it may not be. Either way, depression isn't something to mess around with.

I'm typing this from a good place, mentally. But there is no shame in admitting that there are days when I feel like I can not handle the stresses of life. And there is no shame in admitting that I often need help.

    • A Fan's Perspective - RWBY Volume 3 Unanswered Questions

      centurionmac

Yup. Did another article for VAVEL about RWBY. Go here if you'd like to read it.

I know there is a TON I didn't add, but I wanted to write some of the points that were more important to me. I will likely do more RWBY-related stuff for VAVEL - I'm having a ton of fun with it, and VAVEL is kind enough to give me the reigns. So, we'll see.

    • New Job, New Life; Adapting To Lifestyle Changes

      centurionmac

Anyone who is remotely acquainted with me knows that, for the past year, I have been searching for a job. I finally moved away from home in 2015 with the intention on starting a new life, but that start took a lot longer than previously expected, and most days, I was pretty miserable as I sat at home and watched my bank account slowly dwindle away.

That changed this week as I was finally hired to an honest-to-goodness full time job. I am a marketing associate for Pure Rejuv, a resort focused on promoting healthy living through retreats, online classes, and our blog. They focus primarily on yoga, meditation, and healthy foods, so if that is your kind of thing, you can check out our web site at purerejuv.com. You can also check out our Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest pages. I will be operating these pages about 70% of the time.

I am incredibly excited to not only have a job, but to have a job in a field I feel confident in. I love social media (despite its flaws), I get to be in an office instead of a factory job like I worked before, and despite not knowing much (if anything) about the subject manor, I get to work in a laid back environment with a bunch of people who are trying their best to help you succeed. I couldn't ask for better.

Except...I'm not as happy as I should be.

See, one of the things I have learned about my depression over the past year is that it doesn't take too kindly to changes. Whether it's figuring out health insurance, dealing with my girlfriend's work schedule, or just not being in the house for most of the day like I was before, lifestyle changes tend to send my brain into overtime. This means when people ask me how my job is, I respond "great" with the least amount of enthusiasm ever. It is not a reflection of my job, but rather a reflection of the ailment that causes me to dislike anything that takes me out of my routine.

My depression is something I have promised to get fixed...though the idea of getting it fixed is a lifestyle change, which causes my depression to act up...and here we are again. I know I should be thankful, and I am (when my mind is working right), but it is hard.

I hope to be able to write a Part 2 of this article, explaining how I ended up adapting to these changes, and how I was able to tackle my problems and move forward. I guess that is my biggest goal of 2016 - fix myself.

If there was anything harder than a "dead end", I've hit it. Feel free to search if you'd like, but there isn't a whole lot of demand for people with a major in History and Political Science, a Masters degree in Public Affairs, and who has been working in a factory for a year and a half.

Though, on the other end, if you WERE to find me gainful employment, I would be required to put you in my will.
