      WARNING: WALL OF TEXT AHEAD

I'm going to try to make this a good piece about my experience at RTX and hopefully it's not terribly creepy. Let me start off by saying that I had a tremendous amount of fun at RTX this year. I had a good amount of fun last year but the situation this year was so much better. I drove down with Sara and it was a really successful test of our relationship. Being in a car for 13 hours in a row and being together during all downtime we had was something that neither of us had really done before, and I'd say it ended well for both of us. She borderline stalked me when I was working the convention, which brings me to the whole reason for writing this in the first place.

The most amazing thing to me is that there is no way to really accurately put into words the experience you might have just interacting with people in general. I've got plenty of that and I'd like to think that I'm really quite good at it, but there's absolutely no way in hell that Caiti, who was head of the Personal Assistant role at RTX this year, could have read that off my application. After not getting the tech role I had applied for I was assigned the role of Floater, which pretty much just runs around and fills whatever role needs to be filled at any given time. I was fine with this, though I would rather know definitely what my job would be rather than "go fill a gap here or there." As the actual event got closer I got an email from Caiti saying I'd be with her group as a Personal Assistant, and that's where the true fun began.

Friday morning all of us assigned to Caiti gathered around to learn our roles. Caiti went down the list and assigned us all a staff member that best lined up with our schedules. One of the team members who was seriously hoping for Michael or Ray ended up with Ray because their schedules were practically identical. It should go without saying that he had an incredible time as well.

Now it may not be completely fair to say that I wouldn't have had a better experience than the one I had since I wasn't an assistant for everyone, but I'm extremely happy and grateful that I was assigned to Ryan. Right away he was extremely laid back, which really struck me since I'm sure this is the first event of this size that he's been a part of. He was very humble and was always able to find something to talk about with the fans as they came up for his signature and a picture. He had to have answered the same question about Edgar or various other themes and running jokes hundreds of times, but each answer was unique in its own way and 100% genuine.

Easily my favorite part about Ryan was his humility. Each day during the convention saw an incredible line at the AH Lounge, and many times due to other panels, or lunch/bathroom breaks he'd be the only one in the Lounge, sometimes accompanied by Geoff or Jack. Each time we had to stop the line coming through because there was only him and one other person, he'd half joke about all these people not being there to see him. And during all the times where he was the only one in the lounge he was never content to just stand and look at the line. At one point I had gone to get some lunch for myself after he insisted I go, when I came back I asked one of the other Guardians where he had gone since I didn't see him. He and Jack had started to dive into the line themselves and sign stuff while everyone was waiting for the rest of the AH guys to get back. He did this not once but four times that I can remember. From what I could tell the fans were incredibly grateful. As a strange side effect they'd often get the opportunity to just stand with Ryan and basically hang out while the line was moving through Ray and Michael once they had gotten back. Every one of them seemed to enjoy it, and I can't really blame them.

There were a few times I had to cover for another assistant or run an errand for a different staff member, but each one of those were highlights of their own. For example, I ran liquor for Geoff, #Dantheman, Gavin and Michael. I directed Seananners to the bathroom, escorted Jack to and from a couple places, and bought a pizza for Dan and Gavin.

Now that I've fanboyed talked about my experience with the staff, I'm going to talk a little bit about the Guardians in my group. First off I couldn't have asked for a better random group of people to work with. Every one of the other AH assistants (Kate, Alex, Ben, Stephanie, and Tim) were phenomenal to talk to. I don't think I've ever gotten along with anyone as quickly and easily as I did with those guys. It may be a bit of a brag, but our ability to seamlessly transition between our staff members and help each other out with whatever we needed was awesome. Even the assistants I didn't see as much (Laura, Len, Paul, Sofia, Steffie, Andy, Nichole, and Reg) were a lot of fun to talk to and super easy to get along with.

I spoke to Caiti a little bit about this next bit at the end of the event on Sunday evening, but the monumental amount of ass our group kicked for never having met each other, never having met Caiti before, and not knowing who we would be assisting all weekend is just a testament to how incredible the community surrounding RT is. The Guardians that were assigned to Caiti to be PAs had arguably the best jobs at the convention, and at the risk of sounding a tiny bit arrogant there could not have been a better group of Guardians to do the job.

So at the end of this giant wall of text, I'd like to thank all my fellow PAs, the rest of the Guardians who kept peace and order in the hall over the weekend, the ones who made sure all the awesome live events went well, and the ones who had the answers that I didn't. I'd also like thank Caiti for being fucking awesome, and Ryan for being incredible to me all weekend, and for paying me for the gum I gave him even though I told him not to. Gus and Barbara for organizing an awesome event, and all the fans who came and kept us all going.

I realize by posting this journal I will also send a tweet out. Said tweet will be posted to my Facebook wall where more people will see it. A post on one social networking site will be posted to two more simultaneously. Do I win yet?

Also misleading title. What are you gonna do about it?

I've decided to own and operate my very own Tumblr account. For those of you who may be following me (there has to be somebody, I know people don't saunter over to my profile here on purpose) or those of you who may be creeping on me (I see you, by the way) you are more than welcome to check it out. At the time of writing I only have one post up, but I hope to add more to it in the future, and I will try to keep up with it as much as possible.

Going on a little rant. Flame away if you will.

Can anyone explain to me how EA isn't considered a monopoly? I'm sure the antitrust laws aren't written with video games in mind, but this has to be a crime of some sorts. Let me explain:

EA has sole licensing to Madden and NCAA teams to reproduce their likeness in video game form. They don't have exclusive licensing on every team in FIFA, but seriously what is their excuse? They continue to make games, year after year, that have a lot of promise. I won't lie, I have a lot of fun playing their games and I understand that every game is going to have its bugs and glitches, but it seems that EA never learns from the mistakes they make in games, much less concentrate on fixing some of the glaring ones. Again, I understand that it must be hard to do so releasing a game every year but still, it's gotten a bit ridiculous.

On top of that, they've announced the "Season Pass" which is a cool idea, if it wasn't "mandatory." Sure it's not, but they add a couple features to the pass that have been included features in sports games forever. The example I use (because I have experience with it and the only one I really care about) is FIFA Creation Center, which essentially lets you create your own players and teams for use in games. Sound familiar? Every EA Sports game I've played since NHL 98 has had this feature built in to the game itself, and its still there to a degree. You can still create players in FIFA 11, but its much easier to do it online with the Creation Center and plus you can create teams. This feature is now "included for free" with the Season Pass. Can anyone explain to me how that's "free?" Especially something that should come with the game? It's like going to Best Buy to buy a laptop but you have to buy the power adapter separately from the computer, at the same price as last year's model even though last year's included its power adapter.

This method of marketing is unfortunate because it's a low and not 100% ethical in my opinion, but EA is sitting there all trollface because they know that people will still buy their shit even though they're screwing their fanbase over.

TL;DR EA has cornered the market and has been making mediocre or worse games for years, they're starting to shave away parts of the core game and are now selling them separately without dropping the price of the core game and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight.

Any fellow sports games fans with me?

More than anything I hate reading/watching/listening to something that inspires me to write or do something but before I get a chance to really do it the inspiration fades and I'm like "Meh."

For instance, lurking the LFTO and Season 9 threads gets me thinking a lot especially about the morality and sentience of AI or other computer programs and it makes me want to write out all sorts of different ideas. Or the journal that Monty just posted oddly enough got me thinking a lot about education of all things. I wanted to go back and listen to the unabridged version but I've almost lost interest in it. Maybe I'll go back to it...

Point being I feel like I've lost a lot of my interest in certain things. Maybe it's not even that but more so just dormant until someone provokes it but it's like a fat lazy house cat now and as long as you're not within breathing distance of it it won't care.

Anyway blah blah blah random journal entry on RoosterTeeth that nobody will read but I put it here because it fits here better than it does on facebook.

So, I have the first comment on a staff journal. I say it this way because there was one before me, but it was removed for being inappropriate. Still counts right?
