So I've signed in for the first time in a long while, only to find that the site I loved is no more. I'm not a fan of this new look; not at all.

      Why?

From Charlie Kaufman, the writer of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, comes his directorial debut: Synecdoche, New York.

      From IMDB:

A theater director struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he attempts to create a life-size replica of New York inside a warehouse as part of his new play.

Critical reception for this film has varied wildly from "a miracle movie" (TIME) and "masterpiece" (Roger Ebert) to "a maddening, overstuffed, overambitious, self-indulgent motion picture" (Reelviews).

It has finally opened in a theater near me, and I was wondering: has anyone here seen it? Any thoughts?

A few days after Chapter 19 of Reconstruction went public, a fit of nostalgia drove me to dig out my old RvB Season 1 DVD. As I began watching, I found myself experiencing a strange feeling: sadness. I confirmed this with follow-up viewings of seasons 2-4; I wasn't laughing nearly as much.

How could I? AI humor no longer inspires laughs when one looks at the series as a whole. The entire time travel storyline no longer makes any sense whatsoever. Jokes about "Ghost" Church are no longer funny; they're tragic. In fact, BGC's entire scenario has acquired an air of tragedy. Two armies fighting for supremacy of a useless box canyon has transformed from absurdist humor and satire to a cruel trick by unknown military higher-ups.

I partly want to tell myself to just lighten up and enjoy the ride. But the entire point of Reconstruction was to move the BGC universe (along with its characters) into deeper and darker territory. How can the audience take the Alpha storyline seriously after the light, pitch-perfect lunacy that preceded it for 100 episodes?

My question to you is this: has Reconstruction in any way helped or hindered your enjoyment of the Blood Gulch Chronicles?

Josh Groban doing The Fresh Prince of Bel Air=lolololololololololoolololololololololololol

No Emmy for Michael C. Hall= Not right. It's just not right.

No Emmy for Lost's "The Constant"= A fucking travesty.

      Well, I'm disappointed.

And Don Rickles was annoying (though I guess he's earned it).

And the reality hosts were the exact opposite of funny.

And Ricky Gervais is made of win.

And prunes will lead to shit.

Before now, I honestly hadn't enjoyed Reconstruction that much. It felt like a retread as far as humor was concerned, and the deliberately shadowy plot didn't exactly fill me with confidence.

But, with Chapter 12, things are hinted at that could bring this franchise at least close to its former glory.

In this chapter, with the group more or less back together (where are Tucker and Donut?), RT has re-found the rhythm that made the original series so much fun to begin with. Individually the characters are one-note across the board, but together their interactions flair with that trademark RvB spark.

I'm still not completely won over by the series' wannabe serious tone. I'm afraid that RT may be backing itself into a corner. Characters that are this shallow can't pull their intended emotional weight (was anyone honestly emotionally affected by Caboose's near-death ?), but if the characters are developed beyond their stereotypes (stupid, kiss-ass, etc.) they lose their comedic edge. Unless the series tops taking itself so seriously, the old gang is going to feel more and more out of place.

Personally, I think the story arc they seem to have planned would work better with all new characters. Caboose and Co. seem like tacked-on fan service in the middle of a possibly very serious plot. Now that they're aware of the darker universe surrounding them, it seems all hope is lost for a return to classic Blood Gulch shenanigans.

But there may be hope. Chapter 12's ending actually felt surprisingly epic, and the increasingly heated flame war between Chairman and Director could manifest into something very entertaining. I hope RT actually has a long-term plan for the story rather than making it up as they go along, because 12 seems to signal the true beginning of the series and a possible return to greatness.

      ...

      Perfection.

I'm very hesitant to use this word in reference to any film. But I can't, for the life of me, think of one single flaw in The Dark Knight's entire 2 1/2 hour running time.

I'm not saying it's the greatest film ever made, but Christopher Nolan has created an absolutely flawless superhero epic.
I honestly hope there isn't a sequel to this film. No one will ever surpass Ledger as the Joker, and I wouldn't want to see them try. I just don't see any possible way they can top this. I have to admit, though, that if any team could do it it's these guys.

I'm blown away right now. I'll probably see it again tomorrow.

UPDATE: I did see it again. My opinion hasn't changed.

I'm positive that the producers said straight forwardly that Jin's was a flashback and Sun's was a flashforward.

But I agree that Jin is not dead. He's not dead until they say he's dead and/or he starts showing up like Corpse Christian.

    • ChipperHalf

"Yeah, there's no way Jin is dead. The biggest evidence is in the episode "Yi Jeon". Everyone was quick to assume that Jin's story was a flashback, but my first thought was that Jin was still working for Sun's dad (by choice or not). He may even be working for him to protect Sun (I'm guessing her dad wasn't too happy about the whole hostile takeover thing). I just don't get why they would have one flashback in an entire season of flashforwards. "

That was definitely without question a flashback. They said it was the year of the dragon which is 2000, and he said he had only been married to Sun for a few months. The reason they did it was to throw off the audience and make us think that Jin was with Sun when she gave birth, and therefore was one of the Oceanic 6, but it turned out to be a red herring and we knew he didn't get off the Island.
