Just dropping a quick line. I got home from Iraq safety. Unfortunately, the body count that I stacked up over 1 year, is Zero. Damn. I will fill you all in more when I get time.

    • Time for another update

      cswilson

Its about that time again. I have been back in country (Iraq) for almost a month and a half, so I figure that its time for an update. I don't want to leave you guys hanging for too long, you might be violent.

I am almost done with this tour. I have something less than 30 days, but I have not actually sat down and started a count down. I just focus on one day at a time, and they do seem to fly by pretty quick. I cant wait until I get back home, it will be nice to have my own fast as shit internet again. I promise never to mock dial up again because the internet here is slower than that. If I can even connect at that. Its a bitch either way. Once i get back, I promise to be more active again, just like old times. smiley0.gifsmiley0.gifsmiley0.gif I have so much RvB to catch up on its embarrassing. I own all the dvd's and I have not sat down and watched any past the 100 Eps of the original RvB. I know, its bad. I think I will watch the whole thing from start to finish on the plane trip home. Its only going to be 27 hours..... iPad go!!

Other big news is that I have officially decided to take the plunge and get married. Yep, Basherer not only found a girl that will sleep with him, but will also legally (therefor she is actually real, sorry for stealing that joke from you all) marry me. Sounds like a win win for me. smiley0.gifsmiley0.gifsmiley0.gif

I don't know if she has seen any RvB, but I plan on fixing that at first opportunity. Well, that's all from me for the moment, 12 hour shift, followed by 2 hours of PT has kicked my ass.

    • Life At Home

It is so great to be back. I have to go back to iraq here in 5 days, so I am trying to enjoy it as much as I can. Its weird, when I am in Iraq, any life outside of Iraq seems long gone and that there is nothing else, but once I got here, it seems weird that I was even in Iraq.

So far, its been really relaxing. I have really lazy for the most part, and I did pick myself up a girlfriend too. Oddly enough, it was someone that my other brother has been trying to set me up with for years, but we never hit it off until I deployed. I have known her for a couple of years now, but it still came around kinda quickly, and I have no idea how well its going to work with me in a foreign country / hawaii while she will be somewhere else far away. It will be interesting to say the least, but its good.

I did get the opportunity to go to the range last week, and it was great to pop off a couple hundred rounds. It made me miss my lil' .45. Its kinda sad that I have to leave her behind again. I can tell when she is mad at me, she ejects the shells straight for my forehead. Which btw, if there are some gun enthusiasts, can anyone tell me why she sometimes ejects straight back? I can only guess thats its because she is knew, and she is not quite out of the break in period yet. So any help on that front would be pretty cool.

Other than not wanting to go back, life's good right now. I hope that everyone is doing great and its only a couple more months until I get to leave that craptastic country.

    • Working my way home

      cswilson

So yep, I finally are starting to make my way home. I have left my home station, but now I am chillin in Balad. Here i a couple of hours, I will make my way to Kuwait and then after a LONG (almost 24 hour layover) i will get on my long ass flight back to the states. I think that flight is 20 hours or some such. Too fucking long for my tastes, but it will be great to be somewhere where I dont have to worry about some dumbass dropping a rocket or mortar on my head.

I was kinda a dumbass and when I left Warhorse this morning, I forgot to pack a outlet adapter, so now I cant charge my shit. I will need to see if I can bum one off another soldier or something, otherwise, i wont be able to facebook until i hit the states again.

I guess the only interesting thing that has happened to me since the last journal update is that the runway got hit again. Its about 100 feet from the other hit. We had 4 personal out on the runway, and 2 in the shelter when it hit. They had a piece of shrapnel go through the shelter (a brand new mind you since the other one got fucked up on the other hit) about a foot from their heads. We got REALLY fucking lucky that no one got hit. Its crazy, these guys are shooting the rockets at us from 10 kilometers away and hitting us. I would say they hit about 75% of the time. I do have to give them props that they do know how to shoot a rocket. The attacks of increased too because of the Tunisia, Egypt, and any other country that is revolting. WE did drop some more ordinance on some guys, which is always cool. Its nice to know that we can still kick someone's ass when we want to.

Anyway, it will be nice not to need to hit the ground every time i hear a siren. Its going to be great, I will post some pics of all the cool shit I am going to do. smiley0.gif

I figured its about time I finally sit down and write something out.

My life is the same day in and day out. Its very boring. I wake up, go to work, 12 hours later i go back to my little room, take a shower, and go back to sleep. I work 7 days a week, and I have not had a day off for 7 months. So its starting to really wear on me.

I no longer have a list of people I cant stand to be around. Its a much shorter list of poeple that I can stand. Of course, thats probably not too surprising. smiley0.gif

I do get a fairly constant reminder of where I am at. The local terrorists like to shoot rockets and mortars at us. Sometimes they miss, sometimes they dont. I have been really lucky personally as they got really close. a 107mm rocket hit 53 meters from where I was sleeping. Yeah, it was really fucking close. It actually hit the runway that I work at. It was 75 feet from our hanger. We got REALLY lucky no one was hurt. We had a person walk completely across the kill zone no less than 30 secs before it hit. We did take severe equipment battle damage, but no injuries.

that was by far the closest to me, but they do like to keep trying. The only other exciting parts of being here is going to sleep and waking up to the sounds of gunfire. Its cool i guess. At least we are fucking someone up smiley0.gifsmiley0.gif

So finally we are in month 8, and I get to go on r&r next month. I can not WAIT to go home for 2 weeks. I am desperate need of a break.

I hope that everyone here is doing well, and I will sit down and read all your retarded number of journal posts on leave. smiley0.gifsmiley0.gif

I am going to drop an update in your laps since i dont have anything better to be doing atm. I am currently in Kuwait where it is 9:30 PM or 2130 for the military inclined and its still 108 degrees. 108 already feels good compared to how hot it gets during the day. Overall, i expected it to be even hotter than it is. During the day it only gets up to 115 or so. Not bad really. But i am sure that once i get into Iraq and start working on the flight line, i will be seeing higher temps.

Anyway, i will be in Kuwait for another couple of days or so then we make our big push into Iraq. I really dont know what to expect once i get there, but from what i hear, its better than being in Kuwait. Take care guys, i will see you all in a couple of days.

In just over 24 hours, i will be heading out. I already got rid of the interwebs, and that makes me sad that i have to pirate my buddies internet. I am going to be in Kuwait for somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks before i actually head into Iraq. So it might be awhile before i can log on again.

I finally got smart and bought the RvB dvd's. So at least i am not going into Iraq without them. I am totally going to watch the shit out of them.

I hope the the next year treats you all well, and i will update when i get there.

See you on the flip side.

Yeah, I'm in the same state. Our club pretty much dies in the summer, we just get together when we can. Myself and one other guy did 45 straight minutes of sabre Monday night, I thought I was going to die. Especially since I did three hours of paintball on Sunday.

Other than that, just lots of job applications.

Yeah, I think it's an empty threat. The part from my ISP said to stop sharing and delete the file. They did mention that HBO has the right to seek legal action, but 9 times out of ten they leave it up to the ISP.

Bayonet is EVIL. Breaks all the time, etc. Just make sure that whatever you're hooking up to is 2-pin compatible.

As for the plastron, I've always seen people wear it over the suspenders, the idea is that it'll help prevent them from slipping or moving around. I don't know if that actually works though.

The brand you want TOTALLY depends on how much you're willing to spend. I'm assuming you're buying both clothing and weaponry/cords.

For cheaper stuff, I'd avoid Blue Gauntlet (their blades break constantly and I've heard bad things about the jackets), but Absolute Fencing makes pretty good stuff. I got all my equipment from there initially, and they definitely focus on less expensive stuff, so if you're looking to spend more you probably want to check out the vendor Physical Chess or Triplette.

If you're looking for good stuff, Leon Paul and Uhlmann are the best quality, but MUCH more expensive.

Here's our club's vendors page, which has links to these places.

Oh, and you'll notice some things are marked FIE quality. Those meet international standards and thus are higher quality and more expensive. Unless you're planning on competing internationally or have a large amount of money to spend, I'd go with non-FIE stuff.

There's also the question of paying extra for preassembled swords or buying the parts and assembling them yourself, which is a personal decision.

      Hope that helps!

No problem! Glad I could help. And I honestly had no idea foil had five major parries. Sabre has five, but one is just for the head, epee has four but two are for the lower body, so I assumed foil would be well... two. Learn something new every day.

    • violentvixen

      Ah, yes, good fencing drills.

First, do as many lunges as possible each day. That's the best thing to do. I would also recommend offering to help out your armourer, it's really good to know how all the equipment works.

      Footwork

Definitely the most important part of fencing. Most places I've been start with shadow fencing, where one person leads a group of people. The leader advances, retreats and lunges, while the followers have to maintain the same distance (advance when they retreat, retreat twice when they lunge, lunge with they recover). The leader varies the size and speed of his steps, so the drill is really good for learning to just and change tempo, direction and speed as needed.

      Proper en guarde:

Find a mirror and do all your moves facing it. Look at what target you're exposing, check your stance and your arm position.

To make sure your feet are staying in the proper orientation, start at one end of the gym on the half court line or some other line. You should be in en guarde, so the heel of your back foot should be on the line and all of your front foot should be. Advance or retreat across the gym, checking occasionally to make your feet are still in the same position on the line.

      Point control:

Easiest one is to hang a golf or tennis ball from the ceiling and practice lunging at it or just extending and hitting it. We have small targets on our walls, but I don't know how feasible that is for you.

The second one is to find a hacky sack or tennis ball or something like that. Have a partner toss it at you while you're in en guarde, then extend and catch it as you lunge. Make sure to catch it right where you'd be extending if you were holding a sword.

Two others that I know are specific to epee and sabre that could be adapted in some way for foil:

For epee, you'd maintain distance, and one person would expose their wrist and advance, the second person would hit it while retreating.

For sabre, we do the infinite riposte drill. Pretty much just keep smacking each other and parrying for as long as possible without letting the other person through.

And of course, start out slow with all of these and speed them up as you get better.
