One fine day, in the middle of the night
Two dead men got up to fight.
Back to back, they faced each other.
Each drew their sword and shot the other.

Rally on friday was brilliant. We got there about 5:30, about half an hour after it started, so there was already a sizable crowd, but more people were still coming in, some knew what they were there for, other were just curious. We broke out a couple of buckets of chalk, and began writing slogans on the steps outside State Library, it was easier than bringing a sign :P

After some sloganising (some of the ones we came up with were pretty witty and cool) and some speeches, we took to the street. By then we numbered about 800 people, with signs and flags and chanting slogans, it would've been a pretty impressive sight, the group of us marching down Swanston street. As we were marching there were a couple of incidents with the police, mainly cos we weren't getting out of the way of traffic fast enough for them, it was at this stage that a particularly rough copper forcibly confiscated our chalk, so no more sloganising happened.

We got to federation square, to which we were barred entrance, and after some confused milling about outside the station, the rally started to break up. The cops decided we weren't leaving fast enough and began forcing the crowd off the street, during which I almost got run over buy a horse.

After we got broken up, we headed back up Swanston Street to Trades Hall to celebrate a good rally, and St. Patricks day. Trades Hall is an incredibly cool building, built buy the unions for the unions, and is one huge tribute to the workers movements. I have it on very good authority thats its the oldest building of its kind in the world.

So all in all it was a good rally, noone got arrested or injured, and there was no significant property damage.

Big Anti-War rally in the city 2morrow :D

Its the best time for a rally, with a decent portion of the worlds media in town for the Commonwealth Games, we'll get plenty of exposure. Unfortunately its a two-edged situation as the police are on high alert and the army is deployed through the city in a bid to stop terrorists. If they decide they don't want us protesting... it could be bad. But it probably won't be. Especially seeing as half the world is watching.

Quite the debacle for the authorities- let an embarrassing anti-war rally go ahead at a time when ur in the biggest spotlight since the 1956 Olympics, or let the world see you put-down the aforementioned rally...

I enjoy making the bureaucracy squirm :D

First week of uni is officially over. It was good. Most of it was really good. Some parts sucked.

First off was Databases, which is easy with a capital 'H'. SQL is the easiest language in existence (so far- it might get harder). I found a guy from high school does Databases with me, Justin, who's a pretty cool guy. He does Business Management tho, so Databases is the only class we have together.

Then, on Wednesday morning I have Games & Interactivity, which is a mixed blessing... on the one hand it is the absolute, most incredibly awesome class anyone has ever dreamed of, on the other hand i have to get up at 6:00 in the morning to get to it. That's a big thing for someone who tries to avoid getting up b4 10am everyday..

It is just.. fucking indescribably awesome. We study games. We have assignments that involve playing endless amounts of games. We have a library of games.. an exclusive, free library of games. We have a room set up as a gaming 'lab' with Xboxes, PS2s, high end PCs, a gamecube, and very soon a set of Xbox 360s! Just un-fucking-believable...

Then there's Introduction to Programming: C which by all rights should be a really cool subject... but we have a Malaysian or some shit teacher who can barely speak English and dumbs everything down and somehow manages to suck all the joy out of learning one of the most powerful languages there is.

C is a weird language. I'm used to BASIC, and VB which is really easy to use and almost all of the programming is done for u by the program. With C u have to do absolutely everything, from loading the libraries used like (stdio.h and math.h) to creating every aspect of the interface. I dunno how much assistance the compilers are, as we have just been practicing in notepad for the moment, but i doubt it'll help allot. We're using Quincy btw.

Then earlier 2day i went to my other class, a 3 hour 'interactive lecture' which is basically the lecture and tuts combined into one, which was Design for Multimedia, which was really cool. The lecturers were cool, the people in the class are cool, the subject is cool. It's a really laid back, easy course. The only downside is if u dun get in early, u get stuck with a Mac, and no one wants that...

      Legal news
This subject's never come up b4, mainly as I've never really been in trouble with the law b4, and this only just barely counts a 'trouble with the law'. I got busted (not really busted, as i didn't know i had to) having a concession train ticket without a concession card. The most ridiculous reason for a fine ever. I mean my Swinburne uni ID should be proof enough that I'm a lazy, broke university student who needs as many discounts and free stuff as he can get his hands on... i still might get away w/out paying tho...

      Political news
I joined the Socialist Alternative, a revolutionary movement, dedicated to the overthrow (peacefully-ish) of the capitalist regime. They're a cool group, sit around on Wednesday night, talking history and politics, plotting to overthrow the government.
Just to give u an idea of what they do, this Friday Johnny Howard is celebrating 10 years as Australian Prime Minister, we're going to crash his $1200 a head party in Toorak. The next weekend is a big rally directed at getting Australian troops out of Iraq. Even if you don't fully agree with their politics, they do some good, fun stuff.

I haven't done a political journal in a while, but this new development has encouraged me to be a bit more vocal :P except a political rant sometime soon.

Uni life is great! I swear, I was born to go to university :D

No place is more suited to me than where the give lectures on 'The Rise of the American Empire'... and give out free booze... and have rallies... and have weekly political publications... and LAN parties.. and political clubs.. and free concerts... all whilst learning computer programming.

The only problem is that i don't actually go to that university. That's Monash, i go to Swinburne. Swinburne is smaller than Monash and their student union can't afford as much as Monash's. Which normally wouldn't matter, as the GSF (General Service Fee) would cover everything, but with the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism (another step in John Howard's grand plan to screw over as many Australians as possible) they really can't afford all the cool stuff any more. :(

So I figure I'll study at Swinburne, but spend most of my free time at Monash, which is fine, with me, I have friends @ Monash.

      Music News
I just bought (yes, i actually bought) the new LIving End album 'State of Emergency'. I even splashed out ($5 extra :p) to get the DVD version, mainly cos i was looking for the music video to Wake Up, which doesn't seem to be on the DVD :9 but the other stuff on the DVD was more than worth it.

      Gaming News
Finished Civ IV, it lost most of its appeal cos it barely works on my computer. I had to shut down everything except the bare essentials of windows (i even had to shut down explorer) in order to get it work. It is the biggest resource hog of any game I've ever played, using 1.4 Gigabytes of RAM at some points... so now I'm playing Sudeki. Sudeki is a good game, Ailish is hot :p, the story line is alright as far as i can tell, but the controls and combat is really bugging me. And the camera. after the incredibly smooth third person action of Jade Empire, Splinter Cell 3 and Star wars BF 2, it feels like trying to ride one of those rodeo bulls. the combat isn't nearly as fluid or cool as Jade Empire, but as long as I'm playing as Ailish it's fine. In other words, it's a good game that'll keep me entertained for a bit, but its nothing incredibly awesome.

      Edit
I just lost 10 hours of work in a power outage...

      ^ Rappers do.

The wintereenmas celebrations are over... just, the last celebratee left no more than 5 minutes ago.

It was a good event, not the awesomeness i'd intended as we'd had a lot of last minute cancellations - 6 - and one guy didn't show up at all, so we were down from 13 to 6. The only upside was that everyone got more screen space, the biggest downside was the cancellation of the projector, which i was looking forward to, i've never done any kind of gaming on a projector :(.

I think i came out on top through the day, winning or being on the winning team in 10 out of 13 games. One being a particularly brilliant and hard fought CTF game, in which we probably exhausted every strategic option available to teams of three in Halo2. I had fun.

We spent most of the day playing Halo 2, with a little bit of SWBF 2, which was a pity as i had really wanted to play Halo 1 again. halo2 is great, but there's nothing like pwning ur mates 50-26 (the tops 2 scores last tiem we played Me-T_Flaems) with the good old fashioned pistol. None of this magnum crap.

A good time was had by all. The next LAN party is going to be celebrating the aquisition of an Xbox 360 by me and various others, probably in the Easter holidays . This time i think I'm going to aim for fewer people, but spread the gaming out over 3 or 4 days, so any cancellations have a far reduced impact. I mean, there's gotta be one day where everyone's available, right? As opposed to today, where everyone was suddenly and drastically unavailable.

      In other news
I recently aquired Civ IV, which will occupy my every gaming moment for the foreseeable future. And the second i finish that i have Beyond Good and Evil, Sudeki, Homeworld 2 and Guild Wars lined up to play. I don't anticipate being bored any time soon. The only problem is that with uni starting, and the need to get a job growing, the amount of tim i ca devote to gaming will be cut drastically by the tim the 360 hits our shelves :( :(

We are officially getting Xbox 360 on its Aus release! Guaranteed! All because my brother has to under go some very expensive and probably horrifically painful cosmetic surgery - braces. My parents promised to buy him an Xbox 360 to keep him from complaining about it.

Which is fine with me, I get a 360 AND I don't have to undergo any surgery :) me = Very Happy.

And the fact that wintereenmas is only 3 days away only makes me happier.. and tireder, as i have to move lots of very heavy stuff and do a lot of cleaning and make sure everyone whose supposed to be coming comes. That's a pretty critical issue- attendance, cos if we get any less than 12 people we'll be running at a loss... and I have to cover any losses, so I'm understandably apprehensive about it.

All the money i have in the world amounts to about $60, which I'm not eager to spend to cover for my cannon-fodder... er, i mean, fellow gamers...

I haven't been online over the past couple of days and probably won't be online until after wintereenmas, mostly cos of wintereenmas preparations, but also because my neighbour wants me to recode her Lost DVDs, which takes about 11 hours a DVD... and there's 3 DVDs... so I'll be busy for a while.

Hope you had you all a great Valentine's Day...

    • Well, that's a kick in the nuts...

The chick who is renting us a projector for wintereenmas got back to me, with her final offer. $120 for 1 day, free delivery. It took some fast talking by me, but that's down from $150 dollars, plus delivery. +1 to Mercantile. :D

That's the good news. The kick in the nuts came not 30 minutes ago, when i got an email back from the local church, who owns the hall we were going to use. Yes, I use the past tense. The hall was supposed to be free, cos my mum is a loyal parishioner, but the church apparently has no sense of loyalty. The hall is going to be $100, and they're not interested in renting it out to teenagers.

Wintereenmas is on the floor, having been brutally bashed by the Catholic Church.

Now it looks like it's going to have to be at my house, which 6 months ago, struggled to contain an 8 player LAN party. This is going to force a rise in price, as food was going to be pretty much covered by my parents, who were grateful that they wouldn't have to have 16 teenagers invade their house and occupy their TVs.

Now wintereenmas is going to have to be $15 bucks a head, and because I feel bad about raising the price everyone gets a DVD with something kool on it... like RvB burnt for TV viewing... or something. Now I have to go and convince people who were 'maybes' when it cost $10 that an increase in price is a necessary, even good thing. Wish me luck.

      In other news
I know I said i was going to be updating stuff a while ago, but i was distracted by the fact that i had just come into possession of a lot of new games: Homeworld 1 & 2 (a 3D RTS. no, not 3D graphics, but an RTS in 3 dimensions- ur units can go up and down as well.),
Black and White (Playing god on a scale much larger than the Sims) and Civilisation IV (haven't played, need a crack). It's still on the cards, it's just lost priority. I'll get around to it, i promise.

I just d/l Guild Wars and will be buying a access key as soon as i can convince my parents 2 pay for it :P If anyone around here plays and could show me the ropes, any help would be gretly appreciated. My total experience with MMORPGs is the 30 minutes i spent on my cousins WoW account, and that time i had an account on Kings of Chaos...

I also just got Dawn of War and may occasionally be seen o/l under the pseudonym St Jimmy.

The obliteration of my watchlist has compelled me to completely redo my RvB account- new watchlist, new profile, new friendlist, new pictures. Same name, new me. Well, not really, nearly all the changes are cosmetic, nothing major. I'll be starting on this tomorrow... I am forever the procrastinator

      In other news
Although wintereenmas has passed, due to certain fluctuations of the time-space continuum, our celebrations are due to take place on Friday the 17th of february. Well, I've actually been back from holiday's for almost 2 weeks now, but General Internet Problems (Fucking Telstra) have kept me from being here.

      The Holiday
Queensland was great, but it's good to be back where it actually drops below 30 during the night. I almost died the first night we were up there, not so much because of the heat, but because its like 65% humidity. It's so humid everyone looks like they just got out of the shower.

We went to all the theme parks of course, Movieworld, Sea World, Dream World and Wet 'n' Wild.

Wet 'n' Wild is the water park (duhh), and really has only one good ride, but there's 2 or 3 other under construction that look like they're going to be awesome. The good ride is called Mammoth Falls- 6 people on a rubber raft send down a giant water slide. Because of the extra weight you go ALOT faster than most water slides. It's a lot of fun trying to get the raft to flip on the corners :D

Seaworld is a marine park, they've got a lot of shows involving dolphins and seals and sharks and stuff, which is alright, but you can see that kind of stuff on TV. It gets a lot better if you have the money and can pay to go swimming with aforementioned sharks and dolphins, but that's like $300 a head. It only has one real ride, which is pretty intense but only lasts for 23 seconds.

Movieworld is run by Warner bros and the have a lot of cool rides and exhibits based on some of their movies. The best ride is the Lethal Weapon one, probably the best out of all the parks and all the rides. 5 360 degree turns, hits 80 kph and never has a queue. I went on it easily 15 times. The other rides are alright, like the Superman (0-100 in 2 sec) and the Scooby Doo Spookycoaster (an indoor roller coaster) but they tend to have really long queues.

Dreamworld is my favourite park they have wat they call the "Big 5 Thrill Rides": The Giant Drop (just like it says, you sit in a chair alongside 7 other people, get winched up about 50m then dropped), The Tower of Terror (you get in a car and get fired out on a track that goes flat for about 70m then goes vertical for 50m, the fun part is you go back down backwards at the same speed you went up), The Claw (a giant swing with about 40 people on it that spins around one axis and swings around another- a full 360 degrees both ways), The Cyclone (A roller coaster, it looked pretty kool, but i didn't get to go on it, because the queues were too long), The Wipeout (A a lot like the claw except smaller and faster and more erratic- it reverses direction and goes out on an angle and stuff). Dreamworld also has the Tiger Island, and we got a lot of photos of the tiger shows, I'll put them up soon.

All in all it was a great holiday. I'll post some of the better pictures soon.

      In Other News...
My sister started her TAFE course this week, she's doing some confectionery course, it's not what she wanted (she wanted Hotel and Bar Management) but it's good for the rest of us, cos everything she makes she gets to bring home :D. at the rate I eat the stuff, in a few months I'll have diabetes and no teeth. I hope she gets transferred into her other course soon....
I'm enrolled in my University course, Bachelor of Multimedia (Games and Interactivity)/ Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Engineering) at Swinburne University and I've applied for a job, which means that soon there's going to be a lot less bumming around done by me.

I've resolved that this year I'm going to drink and party more, spend more time on Red vs Blue and play more computer games, which means that I'm going to have to stop sleeping and find a way to make the day 3 hours longer... oh well, I'll manage somehow...

I havent forgotten about the presents I promised b4 i went away, I'll get to them soon. I haven't got enough for everyone, so I have to decide who is most deserving.

Now this entry is waay to long :p, so I'll catch you all later...

      Edit
It's not that long, but it looks obscenely long when you're typing in the tiny box on the main page...

OMG! I just scrolled down to my watchlist... That is not right... UT_TEXAS_17 has 176 journal entries.... I mean, come on, i was gone for 2 months... oh, well several sleepless nights ahead...

WTF? My watchlist just got vaporised? Its all gone! I couldn't believe how much was there, but i didn't want it all gone! Fuck...
