      datalaughing Always Right

So I got a few responses on my question from yesterday (feel free to look and respond if you haven't yet), and I think I've got an idea about what kind of stuff people might be interested in.

Like Radius said, I'd love to see Mafia again, but I don't think we've got enough people to plan that at the moment. So I'm going to keep that in mind as something we could do in the future if we get more activity.

On the flip side, I really love some of the stuff @MichyGeary threw out about a collaborative story, and I'm going to be thinking of my own spin to put on that idea. So that's something I like a lot that I think I might try to do a little down the line.

In the short term, there was interest in both Fantasy Fights and a Choose Your Own Adventure sort of thing as well as one request for a movie quote game. So I think I shall try to accommodate all three of these. Though not at the same time. I think we will do Fantasy Fights first. So I'm going to begin working on selecting competitors for that (feel free to comment with suggestions, but I make no promises about who will be fighting). For those of you who participated back in the day, this is going to be a complete reboot. So anyone could reappear, from former champions like Yoda and River Tam to previous first-round washouts like Brock Samson. Expect to see that begin within the next few days.

After that's complete, we'll do the choose your own adventure story thing, and somewhere in there I'll throw together a movie quote garden. Because that's the quickest and easiest to do, it could show up at any point.

And because it's been in my head today, here's a random quote. Can anyone identify the source on this one without cheating? Your only hint is, it was a TV show:

"How much did President Jefferson pay for the Louisiana purchase?"

"Well, uh, let's see, in D.C. the most you can take out of the ATM is $300, and you would wanna hold back a twenty in case something come up. So I'm gonna say $280."

    • Fuck it, let's have some fun

      datalaughing Always Right

I don't know about anyone else, but as an old-school forum dweller, this place has felt empty for a while now. Barely any threads still see activity, and I've started to feel like the whole place is holding its breath, either as a precursor to final death or in anticipation of someone in power doing something that will "make the RT site great again."

Well, I'm tired of it. So I'm reaching way back in time to revive ideas that I haven't revisited in years. I'm going to host one of my famous journal games. Assuming I can get some of you on board, maybe I can do my part to make things interesting again.

First step, decide what kind of game to play. I've got several that were very successful before, though some were much more fun in the long long ago when we had mod points that I could hand out as rewards to the winners. Tell me which, if any of these, you folks would be interested in:

      Mafia:

A popular game in my journal once upon a time, so much so that it spawned copy cat games from others among my friends on the site. If you haven't played, everyone gets characters, mostly townspeople, though a few will secretly be evil mafia members who murder a townsperson each night. During the day the remaining townspeople (mafia mixed in) discuss who the mafia members might be and decide on one member of the community to kill in order to try and bump off all members of the mafia. I compose amusing descriptions of each death, people get to throw wild accusations at one another. It's all good fun. The caveats here are, I think we need at least 8-10 people to make a halfway decent game of it, and those people would have to be willing to participate daily if it's going to stay fun. So this one can only happen if we get enough folks on board. So if you're interested in playing, tell you friends to come along.

      Fantasy Fights:

You may have seen this other places, but they're all just imitating me, even the ones who did it before I did. Especially the ones who did it before I did. My first Fantasy Fights on this site was like 10 years ago. So no one can prove anything anyway. Famous Original Data's Fantasy Fights as it was called (by no one ever). How does it work? I put together a tournament of badass, usually fictional, characters and match them up against each other in fights to the death. You all get to vote on who would win each fight, and after that votes are tallied, I will write up a hopefully entertaining blow-by-blow of the fight. People get to debate who should win and then after the fact accuse others of slavish fanboyery when their own beloved character did not emerge victorious. Fun for the whole family. This one we can do with considerably less people, but it's also considerably less interactive than the first option. So there's pros and cons.

      Choose Your Own Adventure:

Ok, so I only tried this once, and it was kind of disastrous, but I'm willing to give it another go if people are interested. This one involves the most writing work on my part, but could be fun. You guys get to choose the genre, and then I compose a story. Each section of the story is like a page or 3 long, and at the end of each section, you all get to vote for what the main character should do next from 2 or 3 options that I provide. The first time people chose Sci-Fi, and I called the series "A Moment's Indecision" because that's the phrase I used at the end of each part to indicate that it was time for people to vote.

Those are the big three I thought of, though there are a couple of other, smaller possibilities. Mostly not as fun because of the lack of the mod point economy the site once had, but I will still pursue if people are interested:

      Daily Trivia:

If you go back about 12 or 13 years, the first thing I ever really did on this site was a daily trivia question. When you got the answer right you were awarded "trivia points" 10 of which added up to 1 mod point, and then your score reset. This fell off even before they took away the mod points, but that was kind of the nail in the coffin. Without prizes, there's no real impetus to keep people coming back. But if you guys are interested, I'd be willing to start this back up. We'd just have to be satisfied with a running score instead of a mod prize.

      Movie Quote Garden:

I post about 50 quotes from various movies, and people have to guess the movies in groups of 5. This, once again, was better with mod points. Because the first 5 guessed correctly would net the person a mod point, the person who got the second 5 would get 2 mod points and so on. The idea being, the first quotes guessed are probably the easiest with the remaining quotes being, theoretically, harder to place as you go along. So the reward would increase as well. I can't offer anything here but bragging rights to the person who gets the hardest quotes, but it's a fun quick game that I could throw together.

So, what, if anything, would you all be interested in playing? I'm hoping the people who still use the site are as interested as I am in getting a little extra enjoyment out of it again. If you guys are willing to put in the effort to be involved, maybe even get others involved, I am happy to do the work and facilitate some fun. So what do you say?

      datalaughing Always Right

Yesterday was officially one year that I've been married. Not too much happened. Unfortunately, the Valentine's/her birthday present I ordered and posted about a couple journals ago has yet to arrive. I talked to the person who makes them a couple weeks ago, and she said her partner had a stroke just before Christmas, and it's put her behind on everything. So not sure when I'll actually see that. If I'm very lucky it may come in next week before her birthday. It was supposed to take 2-4 weeks. It's now been 7. These are the risks you run with custom stuff like this I guess.

We mostly relaxed and played some games. Then we went to her parents' for a very early but tasty steak dinner (2 o'clock, wtf?). When we came home we pulled out the family movie night box. It's a little tuperware box, and inside it is a bunch of slips of paper with movies written on them. Every now and then we let the kids pull one out, and we all watch a movie together. We started out with a big list of movies that we liked and would be ok for the kids but that we knew they hadn't seen yet. Since we put the box together, there have been many fun movie nights, the last one was Serenity, before that Back to the Future trilogy, and ET, all the Harry Potters (that took a while), Princess Bride, and others. Last night it was The Last Starfighter. So that was fun. I'm also in the process of making her watch through Babylon 5 with me. She didn't like season 1 much, but we just started season 2, and I think it's going better.

Other than that, been having fun on Saturdays, watching Marvel movies while skyping with @jedipoet @SpiderWolve @ChipperHalf and other comic book movies crew. That's been awesome.

Anyway, that's what I've been up to.

    • Opinion poll from PAX

      datalaughing Always Right

ok, let me get opinions on this.

We’re waiting for the Pat Rothfuss talk to start. When we came in they were directing everyone as to where to sit. We were the first in the group of people they stopped and directed to the front row just to the right of the stage.

The guy walks us to that row and says sit here. I ask, “Do you want us to start at this end (the end we were standing at, right next to the stage) or that end (the end far from the stage)?”

The guy replies, it’s the front row so I don’t care which side you want to start on since people can walk around you to get to the other seats. So, of course, I take the first seat, like 5 feet from the stage.

So here’s the question, Jennifer claims that I “tricked” the guy into letting us sit here. She says I knew damn well where we should have started and that was at the far end like every other row. I maintain that asking the guy where to start does not constitute a trick. What do you all think?

      datalaughing Always Right

You thought that was December, you say? Well, you're not me. February is Valentine's Day/Jennifer's Birthday/our anniversary. So that means a lot of gifts to give my wife or maybe just a couple of big ones.

For our first anniversary, we are going on a cruise to Cuba. So that's the big thing. Should be interesting. I'm not big on Caribbean cruises. Beaches, sand, salt water, heat, blah. No thanks. This one, however, I'm on board with. Cuba was off limits for Americans since like 30 years before I was born. Can't pass that up now that it's allowed.

That's our anniversary thing, though. For Valentine's/her birthday, I had to figure out something she'd absolutely love. And so, I just ordered this:http://glasssculpture.org/police-box-fridge/

I'm going to keep it a secret and try to arrange it so that she wakes up one morning and it's all applied and in place. She is nuts about Doctor Who, and she's going to flip out when she sees this. It should be fun.

    • Meet the cat

      datalaughing Always Right

So we got a cat last week. He's 6 months old, and we adopted him from a rescue in the Metroplex (Dallas/Ft. Worth for you non-Texans). Meet Dimitri:

      F6555DF6-DA10-479F-AF34-DE877947B790_zps

He's part Russian Blue, hence the name. He's been a lot of fun since we brought him home. Loves being petted. Dislikes cellphones. Mostly I think, to him, if you have a phone in your hand, you're completely wasting a hand that could be used for petting him instead, even if your other hand is already petting him.

Jennifer has a lot more experience owning cats than me. So she is taking the lead on several things. For instance, she's determined that we should get him declawed. So that could potentially happen soon. I've heard that it's cruel, but I don't know.

We started him off in our bathroom, in my closet. So he would have a nice safe room to hide from people in while he got used to us. He got comfortable pretty quickly with moving from there into our bedroom where he sleeps under the bed most of the time, unless we're in the bed, in which case he'll jump up to get us to pet him. This sometimes includes while we're sleeping. If he sees a hand, then he may well headbut it until it pets him, whether the person is initially conscious or not. It's funny.

He's still kind of scared of the rest of the house though. Today while we were working is the first time he's ventured across the house to the office for more than a moment. He's currently napping under my desk:

      IMG_1856_zpszf0rohxd.jpg

I haven't had a cat since I was like 4. So lots of new experiences for me. It's been interesting. One thing is, Dimitri seems to love television. If we turn on the TV in our bedroom he will instantly appear from beneath the bed and jump up to watch with us. That alone makes him fit in pretty well around here.

    • Fuck football

      datalaughing Always Right

Random thoughts while watching a kids' football game.

I'm not a big sports guy. I played tennis in high school, but ever since I was a kid I've had a special hatred for football. What makes football worse than any other sport? What about it aroused a unique ire in the heart of tiny Data? I will tell you, it is the lie of the clock.

I remember waiting for favorite shows that were delayed because a football game ran long. Id look and see that there was 5 minutes left on the clock. Ok, I would think, my show will only be a little late. So I'd walk away for 5 minutes, and when I came back instead of zero, the clock would read 4 minutes. There's something deeply and cruelly deceptive about a game with a clock that doesn't give anything like an accurate reflection of then passage of time. It goes against not just my personal sensibilities, but the fabric of reality as we know it.

Add 2 hours to the clock and never stop it. I'd be fine with that. It's the lying that really bothers me.

      Anyway, that's what I think.

    • Moral question

      datalaughing Always Right

This is just an odd question that occurred to me today. Curious what others' take on it would be:

Let's say you have a button. Only you can press this button, and the button will instantly kill everyone on Earth who is seriously planning on inflicting serious harm on innocent people. So we're talking terrorists, pedophiles, almost certainly at least a few government officials from just about every nation, criminals, really just a whole hell of a lot of people.

      Do you push the button?

Do you have the right to make that sort of decision that so many people should die instead of live? Is there any way that any single person would ever be justified in making that sort of unilateral decision that would effect so many others?

On the other hand, do you have a moral obligation to push the button? If you are the only person with the ability to quickly and definitively protect so many innocent people from harm, can you justify not doing it? Would all the harm those people cause be, to some degree, on you after that?

No, this time it was just Joker doing that while you backed him up, egged them both on, and continued to drag the thread further off topic. So, yes, joker, you, and robosheep all had your posts censored, even the one where robosheep said he was glad I was getting rid of those posts. Because they all just encourage the conversation to go further off topic and generally irritate the hell out of most of the other people in the thread.

I understand that you get off on going into threads and tryin to piss people off as much as possible so that you and your friends can laugh at how upset they get. But as it results in multiple complaints being made to me by other people in those threads and as it completely takes those threads away from the topics they're created to discuss, I would appreciate it if you would get off on it elsewhere.

Generally I would love to give it a try (though I know so little that 3.5 core has no meaning to me), but at the moment things are kind of crazy for me. I'm supposed to be working on a bunch of stuff, the fact that I'm procrastinating more than I should isn't helping either. I'd never forgive myself for adding more on top of it. Sorry.

Have I ever mentioned how dreadfully boring that thread is without any semblance of off-topic discussion? Honestly, there's no point in the thread even existing without the liberty of drifting even slightly from the topic of MLP; the whole brony thing has moved beyond being solely focused on posting pony images and talking about the show, especially in the off season. It's more about the community more than anything, and with you feeling the need to act as Supreme Overlord of the thread, it severely restricts the thread's capability to be anything more than an imagedump for shit that people find on r/mylittlepony or whatever horribly unfunny tumblrs that chris9801 feels the need to post. I can see your policy being somewhat justified during a season of the show, but not now.

That's funny coming from the person who I got 3 PMs about linking to posts where you said you only ever go to the MLP thread to start shit.

That aside, it certainly would be nice if the thread could go off topic and remain civil and not devolve into hundreds of posts of people bitching back and forth and basically chasing away everyone who actually wants to participate in the thread. That's what I've been wanting it to be for the past two years. Unfortunately, it seems to prove over and over again that it can't manage that. Pretty sure you know that better than anyone, seeing as you've made 15 posts in the thread in the past 2 days and maybe 3 or 4 of them weren't insulting or making fun of someone.

If certain people were actually interested in having civil discussions that ranged beyond the show, that would be wonderful, but the main thing people are interested in outside of the show is turning the thread into verbal fight club, which is why I get 5 PMs a day from people who actually want to talk about MLP but find that the people posting the most aren't really interested. So the option of a brony community discussion thread hasn't really been put on the table for me. Instead I get to choose between hundreds of posts of pointless bitching to entertain a few people who get off on that, or Nazi Equestria. Neither one is really thrilling for me, but I apparently have to be the one to choose.

I said I was good with people, but that's general enough. I honestly don't recall which preferences I put on the application. I think I may have just put no preference on all three. So it'll be exciting to see where I end up.

It was meant to be a joke, but that's actually a good idea. Get those latex masks in an LHO style. And I didn't know you were a Guardian! Congrats! What department are you in?

I'm not actually sure how you could do that. Might be fun to try. Last year I had my avatar on the name tag I attached to my badge, so people could recognize me. This year I'm a guardian though. No cosplaying.

I understand what you mean. The names are mainly an emphasis on a 'for the thread members by the thread members' sort of thing. Depends how people what to play it. Original characters make it just another group of short stories, really

        Cheers man

      • datalaughing FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Always Right

Not really? I've just got other stuff that I'm working on at the moment. Also, why use names from the thread as characters? I mean, sure, it might interest people at first when they're like, "Oh, man, I have to find out what I'm up to," but we've seen that that doesn't last too long. Then, if you write something really great and decide you want to publish it you've got a thing filled with weird names that no publisher would want to touch with a ten foot pole. Not to mention that no one would complain because someone used them in a way they didn't like. Seems like original characters might save a lot of trouble in the long-run. Then again, since I said I'm not participating, it's really none of my business.

You should just pick up 3 women and bring them back with you. That would solve the problem. I booked a 1 person room, and I am quite happy with that. Though it's just for Friday and Saturday night. Didn't plan on getting there Thursday.

The easiest approach might be to find people who haven't bought tickets for RTX yet and then convince them to go by saying you have a room you could split with them right at the convention center.

Cool. Seems like everybody did that, but my plans got kind of messed up, so now I'm trying to find more people to share my room. I don't necessarily HAVE to, I could go solo, but I booked for 4, so yeah.

Of course. I reserved a room at the closest hotel at the same time I bought my ticket.

If he only did 3/4ths of the agreed-upon work, I hope you didn't pay him more than 3/4ths of the agreed-upon money.

So later I found out from Arch and James (our outgoing HoCo co-chairs) that the contract actually stipulated that the set could go anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hrs. So DJ Milkman didn't do anything wrong (from a contractual standpoint). Still, it's kind of sucks that he only did the bare minimum and never really gave us a concrete estimate about for how long he'd actually perform in the first place.

Actually, I was referring to pretty much all the people who have sunk the thread into pointless off-topic bickering, but making yet another off-topic post of whining sure doesn't help your case much.

If that were the case than you should not have used the specific reply. LOL

This may have been the best part. I think they push the visual psychosis a little too far, though. Not much room for subtlety.

They did a lot of build up of Frank in this... but I couldn't help feeling that his character was Walt only with top billings. And again with the same trimuvate of characters. It was funny, well written, but at the same time been there, done that.
