I don't know about anyone else, but as an old-school forum dweller, this place has felt empty for a while now. Barely any threads still see activity, and I've started to feel like the whole place is holding its breath, either as a precursor to final death or in anticipation of someone in power doing something that will "make the RT site great again."
Well, I'm tired of it. So I'm reaching way back in time to revive ideas that I haven't revisited in years. I'm going to host one of my famous journal games. Assuming I can get some of you on board, maybe I can do my part to make things interesting again.
First step, decide what kind of game to play. I've got several that were very successful before, though some were much more fun in the long long ago when we had mod points that I could hand out as rewards to the winners. Tell me which, if any of these, you folks would be interested in:
A popular game in my journal once upon a time, so much so that it spawned copy cat games from others among my friends on the site. If you haven't played, everyone gets characters, mostly townspeople, though a few will secretly be evil mafia members who murder a townsperson each night. During the day the remaining townspeople (mafia mixed in) discuss who the mafia members might be and decide on one member of the community to kill in order to try and bump off all members of the mafia. I compose amusing descriptions of each death, people get to throw wild accusations at one another. It's all good fun. The caveats here are, I think we need at least 8-10 people to make a halfway decent game of it, and those people would have to be willing to participate daily if it's going to stay fun. So this one can only happen if we get enough folks on board. So if you're interested in playing, tell you friends to come along.
You may have seen this other places, but they're all just imitating me, even the ones who did it before I did. Especially the ones who did it before I did. My first Fantasy Fights on this site was like 10 years ago. So no one can prove anything anyway. Famous Original Data's Fantasy Fights as it was called (by no one ever). How does it work? I put together a tournament of badass, usually fictional, characters and match them up against each other in fights to the death. You all get to vote on who would win each fight, and after that votes are tallied, I will write up a hopefully entertaining blow-by-blow of the fight. People get to debate who should win and then after the fact accuse others of slavish fanboyery when their own beloved character did not emerge victorious. Fun for the whole family. This one we can do with considerably less people, but it's also considerably less interactive than the first option. So there's pros and cons.
Choose Your Own Adventure:
Ok, so I only tried this once, and it was kind of disastrous, but I'm willing to give it another go if people are interested. This one involves the most writing work on my part, but could be fun. You guys get to choose the genre, and then I compose a story. Each section of the story is like a page or 3 long, and at the end of each section, you all get to vote for what the main character should do next from 2 or 3 options that I provide. The first time people chose Sci-Fi, and I called the series "A Moment's Indecision" because that's the phrase I used at the end of each part to indicate that it was time for people to vote.
Those are the big three I thought of, though there are a couple of other, smaller possibilities. Mostly not as fun because of the lack of the mod point economy the site once had, but I will still pursue if people are interested:
If you go back about 12 or 13 years, the first thing I ever really did on this site was a daily trivia question. When you got the answer right you were awarded "trivia points" 10 of which added up to 1 mod point, and then your score reset. This fell off even before they took away the mod points, but that was kind of the nail in the coffin. Without prizes, there's no real impetus to keep people coming back. But if you guys are interested, I'd be willing to start this back up. We'd just have to be satisfied with a running score instead of a mod prize.
Movie Quote Garden:
I post about 50 quotes from various movies, and people have to guess the movies in groups of 5. This, once again, was better with mod points. Because the first 5 guessed correctly would net the person a mod point, the person who got the second 5 would get 2 mod points and so on. The idea being, the first quotes guessed are probably the easiest with the remaining quotes being, theoretically, harder to place as you go along. So the reward would increase as well. I can't offer anything here but bragging rights to the person who gets the hardest quotes, but it's a fun quick game that I could throw together.
So, what, if anything, would you all be interested in playing? I'm hoping the people who still use the site are as interested as I am in getting a little extra enjoyment out of it again. If you guys are willing to put in the effort to be involved, maybe even get others involved, I am happy to do the work and facilitate some fun. So what do you say?
