Jennifer and I just bought tickets to go to PAX South in January. I've been wanting to check out a PAX for a while but never really found the right time before.

So this will be my first time. Anyone been before and have some tips? I know @RoadBlock is big on teh PAX-ing.

    • Answer and the NES question

First the answer to the riddle that I posted yesterday. What could I have asked Alexa to add to the grocery list that caused her to add "collage cheese" (which I assume is a variety of cheeses combined on a flat surface to make a picture of some sort)?

      The answer: Kolaches

For anyone not familiar with the term, they're kinda like pigs in blankets, at least in this context. The word can refer to other foods.

      10-Regular-Sausage-Kolaches-Plain-or-wit

That took me some time to figure out while standing in the grocery store, let me tell you. To be honest, my wife figured it out, but only after hearing me say "collage cheese" out loud a couple of times. Anyway, I had a good laugh about it once we managed to interpret what Alexa thought she heard.

Second thing, completely unrelated to the first, I've been asking myself lately, should I hold on to my NES Classic. I play it rarely, and they're selling on eBay for like $250. At this point we know they aren't going to make any more. Can't decide if I should hold on to the rare acquisition that I got up at 4 AM and waited for like 6 hours at Target to get a hold of or if i should sell it on.

There's several questions involved. Are they going to go up or down in price? They should only get rarer as time goes on, but at the same time, people's desire to pick one up may dwindle as the fad gets further from their minds.

The kids enjoy it, though they enjoy the PSVR more. Also, they don't really get into the games much. Ash likes to play the first 2 levels of Kirby's Adventure over and over again because they're easy. Kai likes to just run around in the opening area of StarTropics because there's a pig who turns around and shows his butt. So neither of them is getting a whole lot out of them, but as long as they're having fun I guess.

I don't know. I'll have to think it through some more.

See if you can guess what it was that I asked Alexa to add to my shopping list that ended up as "collage cheese."

Hint: I don't do cottage cheese. So it won't be that easy.

    • Where am I these days?

      datalaughing Always Right

Here. I'm here. I got this question recently from someone I used to talk to a lot on this site. I don't use Facebook where a lot of my old friends have moved full time. And I didn't have any recent journal entries or a lot of posts. So it seemed like a reasonable question.

My problem is that I've always been sort of a lurker at heart. I watch a lot of threads, but even when they were really busy I'd mostly be reading and every now and then when I had something to say, I'd jump in and say it. When a thread is getting hundreds of posts a day, that one moment tends to happen a lot. When no one is posting, not so much.

So I'm here. I'm always here, reading posts in the forums and journal entries and so on. Sometimes I explore the forums looking for threads that are actually active to hop into. I read random people's journal entries in addition to those of the people I watch. Sometimes I even say stuff. I'm too set in my ways to go somewhere else and start from the beginning again getting people to understand that I'm always right. It's a whole thing.

Had a pretty good one this year. Though all my money has vanished as a result. Totally worth it. The kids wanted a pet, but we didn't want a dog, and Jennifer is allergic to cats. So Santa brought them some fish, and they were very excited.

      38D9E6EC-EF8C-4BA2-A4B1-8ACA80044D5E_zps

We have 6 GloFish, and a Betta named Alpha. And, as you can see, there's a dragon who breathes bubbles. I think he's my favorite.

Ash got the infamous Chewbacca mask, which he immediately fell in love with, even moreso than his new 2DS I think:

      5F51594E-CB57-4B1D-A19D-F4ED00128373_zps

And Kairi got Naga from Legend of Korra to go with the Appa she got last year:

      8C672899-7320-46BB-B334-F2B4A47536CC_zps

It was adorable when she introduced them to each other.

Jennifer mostly got Skylanders and LEGO Dimensions stuff. I don't particularly like Skylanders, but she wanted the new game. So I got her the game, and, since I knew that would mean I'd have to play, I also got her the character figures for Crash Bandicoot and Dr. Cortex to give me some palatable options. Because if I'm going to play Skylanders, I'm going to be awesome at least.

And for me it was a Mistborn Christmas. I got the signed, numbered leatherbound Mistborn to go with last year's Elantris:

      mblb01_front__84584.1480120985.900.900.j

Unbelievable lovely book, and in addition I got a couple of framed prints to go with it:

      First Vin:

      vin_print_store__62904.1480121954.900.90

And then a map of The Final Empire:

      final_empire_map_store__14232.1480122225

I've got this weird love for maps of the worlds from fantasy books. I've already got a couple hanging up from Jim Butcher's Codex Alera and Cinder Spires series. So this will go nicely with those. Speaking of Jim Butcher, I got one more framed print for Christmas, using art from the upcoming Dresden Files cooperative card game:

      Service+8x10.png

Very dramatic image of Michael being a badass. Limited to 100 copies, mine is 3/100. @jedipoet @CapDac whatcha think? Had to think of some people who'd read the books to tag :D

Then we had to go to do Christmas at Jennifer's parents' house, which takes forever because of their present opening traditions. The house is filled with presents, sorted in no way. People take turns opening from oldest to youngest. That means the oldest sibling digs through the presents until finding one for dad. Dad opens while everyone watches. Then after the present has been properly appreciated, oldest sibling goes back and finds one for mom. Then himself, then next sibling, etc. etc. We were seriously doing nothing but opening things from 8 until after 11. That being said, they gave me a 4K bluray player to go with the new 4K TV we bought on Black Friday. So that was awesome.

Anyway, what cool stuff did you guys get? And what Christmas traditions did you partake of?

Went and stood in line at Target this morning. Came home with an NES Classic. Now the challenge of the day is, leave it in the box and don't be tempted to play it until after I'm done with work for the day. Can I succeed?

Spoiler: I may have already beaten Super Mario Bros since then.

So last week on a whim, I tried to grab one of those Olive Garden pasta passes when they went on sale. I knew they'd sell out in seconds. So I didn't give much thought to actually getting one. Somehow, I did it. When I actually got in I was so surprised that I paid for it without considering all of the ramifications.

Let's take a step back. For anyone not familiar with what I'm talking about, Olive Garden is an Italian (really probably faux Italian is closer to the mark) restaurant. They have a yearly Never Ending Pasta promotion where you can go and pay 9.99 for all the pasta you want, mixing and matching their various noodles and sauces. You also get soup, salad, and breadsticks.

The last two or three years they've also had an additional promotion, the Pasta Pass. For those who can get one, you buy it for $100, and for the 7 weeks that Never Ending Pasta lasts, you can go and eat as much as you want, as often as you want, at no additional charge. The pass also includes free sodas for you and all your guests whenever you go. Last year they only offered 2000 of these passes, and they sold out in 2 seconds. This year there were 21,000, and they sold out in under a minute.

Anyway, background finished, let us return to my thesis. Through lack of deep introspection, I have become one of the lucky 21K people who this year have been afforded the honor of paying $100 for a 7 week carb binge. Upon reflection, I'm not sure whether to be excited or horrified.

I have no doubt I can get my money's worth out of it. Our local Olive Garden isn't far from my home or work. And I do like their soup. I might use it frequently to go there on lunch and just have the soup. Still, it's scary. What will I do when I know all the food I could ever want is already paid for and available not far away? It could be bad. Then again, now that I say that, I did just come back from a 12 day cruise with a buffet only 3 floors away that just about never closed. So maybe I am capable of maintaining my self control while still making it $100 well-spent.

What do you guys think? Am I on the cusp of some sort of culinary adventure, or is this pasta pass a disaster waiting to happen?

Oh god I didn't even think of Jack as a companion lol. Because I think of him as Torchwood first. I like Matt Smith's Doctor a lot, but there was something about Ten. I think Matt brings out a sadness and sweetness to the Doctor, but I never felt the anger and intensity and fear he could inspire the way Ten did. He managed all the sides of the Doctor just a little better I think.

See I LOVED Robin/Barney. I also did think the way they handled it was interesting because it was a 'careful what you wish for' kind of thing. I just wish they'd handled them the way they should be, which is that both of them are pretty laid back about serious relationships and very independent. They fell too much into typical relationships and that's why it didn't work for them. I think the relationship can be done well, I'm not sure I have the confidence in them to do it. But Barney is developing and growing a little now, so we'll see.

I knew about Victoria because it was a casting spoiler, but I was still psyched to see her because no one said WHEN she'd show up this season. NGL I always wanted her to be the mother, and she was originally intended to be if they weren't picked up for a second season.

Haha nope not me getting married! I hate weddings.

Yeah, I played with it a bit. Basically removed color and upped the contrast as much as I could, then went back and recolored. I liked the end product, more or less. Then I saw a bunch of others' had backgrounds, so I added that right before posting it.
