    • Cruise?

      datalaughing Always Right

So I've never been on a cruise before. In point of fact, I try to stay away from the ocean in general. Sandy beaches and salty water are not really my thing, and the few experiences I've had with the ocean have not been terrific. Creeks? Rivers? Lakes? We're good. But the ocean and I have never gotten along overly well.

Despite that I am contemplating taking a cruise next summer. Just because, hey, it could be a cool thing to try. I know a lot of people who go on cruises practically annually, sometimes multiple times a year, and they love it. Now, since it would only take a few hours for me to drive to the gulf, it seems like a Caribbean cruise of some kind would be a no brainer, but fuck that, I say. I get enough heat in Texas. Not to mention that, like I said, I'm not into the beaches or the ports in Mexico or Haiti or places where they'll kidnap or murder a tourist first chance they get. No thank you. I'm thinking an Alaskan cruise. Then all I've got to worry about are polar bears and Canadians. I think Canadians would rather send Americans home than kidnap us for money.

So anyone who has been on a cruise have thoughts or tips? Hell, anyone want to come along? I'm thinking next May or June, and I will probably end up driving to Seattle or San Francisco to get to the boat. So people between here and there might enjoy the chance to tag along or at least let me crash at their place for a night (again if you're JediPoet).

I'm just starting to look into it at this point, and I don't really know anything about how this stuff works. So any thoughts could be helpful.

    • Videos, finally

      datalaughing Always Right

Ok, so a year after the fact, give or take, I have finally uploaded a bunch of video clips from my trip last summer. Most of them contain people you'll recognize from the site.

There's Poet, ren, Mcmuf (back in his carefree single days), Baraxis, Geekers, Tack, and the rest. It's all good fun.

The last one is my best friend and her sisters getting ready for her wedding. I included that one just because I thought it was funny and it was part of the same trip.

So anyway, enjoy all that I guess.

Honestly, not even sure why I put this in a journal. If you watch me, you got the video alerts, and the journal probably isn't gonna catch many people who don't watch me, but it's written now. So what the hell.

And after hearing people's opinions on the best episodes, the episodes for the Avatar marathon will be:

      Blue Spirit
      Blind Bandit
      Sokka's Master
Day of Black Sun pts 1 and 2.

Maybe another if I still feel like it after, but I suspect that 5 episodes is a good evening's work.

Probably start tomorrow (Thursday) about 6:30 CST, for those of you who said they might want to join. Heck, maybe do it a couple days in a row if xbox netflix is cooperative and I'm in the mood.

This isn't like the group that Monopoly was pushing in my last journal. I made it, as I said, primarily to get opinions and decide what I wanted to watch. I'm not trying to recruit people to watch with me. Just seemed polite, since I was bringing it up, to extend the invitation.

"Relax, Sokka. Where we're going you won't need any pants." - Aang

      Classy show.

    • XBL Netflix A:TLA awesome fun time

      datalaughing Always Right

Ok, so I've decided that some time this week (some evening or maybe during the day on Saturday) I'm gonna plop myself down in front of the TV, bring up Netflix on the 360, and have a marathon of some of the best Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes.

I journal this for a couple of reasons. First, to give people a heads-up in case they want to party up and join in when the time comes, but mostly to have people throw out the episodes they think are the best and, as such, deserve to be included. For instance, one that will certainly be making the cut, The Blind Bandit. I don't know that I'd say it's my absolute favorite (book 3 got pretty fucking awesome), but it's right up there.

So for those of you who have seen the show, which episodes do you think are the best?

And for those of you who have not seen the show, what the fuck is wrong with you?

Anyone else watching this? It's Wednesdays on Fox. Two episodes in, and I'm finding it rather enjoyable. Even Christian Slater trying to be Jack Nicholson sort of works. My favorite line from this week's episode:
"How about I just go talk to her?"
"Like in Chat Roulette ... but in person?! No, come back. That's too ballsy. It's too ballsy!!"

    • Snow days

      datalaughing Always Right

So when I got up yesterday we had a few inches of snow on the ground and I called in to work to say I wasn't coming, much like half the people who worked there did, because this is West Texas. Driving in snow? Fuck that. This morning, though, I decide that two days in a row would be missing too much. Besides it didn't snow any more after about noon yesterday. So I get up a little earlier than my normal 5 am to get ready for work, head out, spend 15-20 minutes clearing about 4 inches of snow off my car and then scraping the ice off the windshield.

The snow in the road isn't really that much of a problem any more. The problem is that the sleet and melted snow have frozen into a solid sheet of ice on all the roads. But I've decided that I'm getting to work. So fuck ice. I make it about a block before realizing that I forgot to get the snow off my headlights, which explains why the street is so dark. So I had to stop to do that and it was like an ice rink in the middle of the road, but I manage to push through because I'm gonna get to work, damn it.

After slipping and sliding in my car for a few blocks, which is way less fun that it sounds, I get to the highway entrance ramp. The one near here is sort of a clover leaf thing where you start out in one direction and make a gradual uphill u-turn to end up on the highway going the opposite direction.

My car isn't real big, which means that situations of ice and/or wind can prove pretty hazardous, but something, maybe my 10-15 mph momentum or maybe just cautious driving gets me up the gradual sloping turn of the hill on the sheet of ice road without incident. There was a little sliding and a little having to plow through mounds of snow/ice that vehicles with a higher clearance had made in the center of the road, but I managed it.

So I crest the hill and see that there's only one lane on the highway that is (mostly) clear of snow, the tire ruts from other people even look like they might go all the way down to the road, no sheet of ice. So I'm like alright! smooth sailing time. But just as I'm about to go from the ramp to the highway, I see that there's a car coming in the one lane. So I have to stop for a moment. That was my downfall.

I'm still on a slight incline on a sheet of ice, and I no longer have my momentum to help me move forward. Inertia, that fickle bitch, has turned against me. My previous inertia of movement has transformed into inertia of rest. Wheels spin, there's smoke or steam or something flying up, but no forward motion. I spent about 10 minutes trying to solve this problem. I'd back up and try to go forward again, go at it from slightly different angles and directions. I almost made it a couple of times, but every time I actually got a little forward momentum going, another car would be coming and I would have to stop again. A couple of other times my car just completely slid sideways and I would come within a couple feet of going off the road, which, on the side I kept sliding toward, would have meant like a 50 foot drop.

Eventually I was just like, you know what, not worth it. I guarantee that most people won't be coming in again today. A friend told me that literally not even half the people who work there (and we're talking hundreds) came in yesterday, and I'd rather just call in to say I'm not coming and chance having people upset with me than chance sliding off the edge and ending up dead in a snow drift or something. So I very slowly let gravity and reverse get me down to the bottom of the ramp again and then turned around and drove home, which is where I will be for the rest of the day, thank you very much.

6:30 in the morning and I've already had an adventure today. Funny old thing, life.

    • Movie weekend! also books

      datalaughing Always Right

Ok, so I may get day 3 up this weekend as well, but I've been like reading obsessively the last couple of weeks, and for just now, I need something I don't have to think about much for a bit. Maybe I'll see The Mechanic tomorrow. That seems like good ol' mindless violence. For now, though, I've gone over my DVD shelf and picked 6 movies i haven't watched in a while and that won't require a lot of thought on my part. Perfect for winding me down because the constant reading has got me a little tightly strung. I woke up at midnight last night and didn't get back to sleep for like 3+ hours because I was 60% of the way through the third book of the Farseer Trilogy, and my brain was kind of hung up on it.

      So the movies are:

Airheads, Blade, GI Joe, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Tremors, and XXX.

This should be fun. Not sure what order I'll do them in.

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering about the books I've been reading, I'll tell you.

See, after reading The Count of Monte Cristo for what was at least the third time in the last year (still fucking awesome, bee tea dub), I decided I needed some new books on my Kindle. I go through a lot of books while I'm working (it actually helps me concentrate on the monotonous stuff to have part of my mind somewhere else), and there's only so many times I can reread the Dresden Files, Three Musketeers, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, and the other like 50 books I had on my Kindle before you need something else just for the sake of variety. I had just gotten Stoker's Dracula (really good) and Twain's A Double Barrelled Detective Story (not that good) from Amazon, but those (and the Percy Jackson books last month or the month before) were the only really new things I'd read in a while. So I decided to go nuts and get a bunch of new books to read.

In a discussion I had with someone I realized that the majority of what I read was fantasy, which is weird because I always thought of myself as more of a sci-fi person, but not for books I suddenly figured out. I don't like most classic sci-fi. So I googled for a list of the best fantasy books to find some new stuff to read. I came up with this list of the top 25 fantasy books/series, most of which I hadn't read, with the exception of #3, Name of the Wind, which is awesome, LotR which is #4 (burn, Tolkien), American Gods down at 20, and of course the Dresden Files down at 25.

I didn't just go down the list and start reading, though. I had to take a lot of stuff into account, did the summary sound like something I would enjoy, if it's a series, how many books are there, are there more planned that aren't out, how often do they come out, etc. For instance, I very quickly decided I didn't want to touch the Song of Ice and Fire books, which are #1 on the list, because there are gaps of between 2 and now 6 years between releases. Fuck that.

So the first thing I ended up reading was Good Omens, which isn't even on the list, but I saw a book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett together. I like Gaiman a lot and was thinking about reading some Discworld, which I've never tried. So I figured it was a good start. I recommend it. It's a fun, quirky book about an angel and a demon who live on Earth but when they find out judgment day is coming, they realize they don't really want to leave.

Then I did the Gentlemen Bastards books, The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies. They were pretty good. Reminded me of NotW in a lot of ways, but they're con stories. The first one ends up having an almost Oliver Twist sort of theme to go with the con job and the second goes for like a pirate adventure. Anyway, they were fun.

Then I read The Magicians, which is probably my least favorite thing so far. It's supposed to be like this darker, more adult Harry Potter, but I feel like it ends up falling flat and being really sort of existentially depressing. It's like if Harry Potter was a depressed alcoholic who was obsessed with Narnia books and banged Hermione. ... and then went to Narnia. It's a weird thing.

Then came Dave Barry's Big Trouble because I like the movie a lot and always meant to check out the book. The book is really similar to the movie, but I have to say the movie is better. Every change that's made is made to make the thing funnier and more enjoyable. I mean, for a book that's mostly a comedy it gets kind of fucking dark at times. Like (for those of you who've seen the film), when Snake and Eddie break into the Herk household and basically take everyone hostage, in the book Snake is constantly talking about how he plans on raping the mother and teenage daughter. Just see the film, skip the book.

And then i just finished the Farseer trilogy, which I really liked a lot. The third book drags like a bitch, though. It's like they took Fellowship of the Ring and stuck it at the end of the trilogy., So much walking. Still, enjoyed it a lot. Very emotional at times and I like the characters, even if some of them are a little archetype-y and the people a weird combination of prudish and slutty. Even thinking about checking out the Tawny Man trilogy, which apparently revisits the characters, but I think maybe I like leaving it where it was.

So that's how far I've gotten up till now, but all of that, including rereading Monte Cristo was the last like 2 and a half or 3 weeks. So that's a lot of books pretty quickly. But when I'm ready to dive in again (maybe Monday), I've also got the Gormenghast trilogy, the Graveyard Book, and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series (which I'm not really sure about, but I thought I'd at least try the first one) plus some more Dave Barry books and Discworld, which I will at least try since people are always saying good things about those books.

Then, with Wise Man's Fear coming out in March, it's gonna be good times. Just sad that they pushed the new Dresden book back to July. smiley2.gif Damn you, JayCee for telling me about that! Why you gotta bring me down?

      Anyway, movie time!
