So I was surfing Netflix looking for something I'd never heard of to try out and ended up watching The Con Artist because it had Donald Sutherland. Apparently the star of the movie is his son, but not Kiefer, a different one. It's about a Canadian car thief who gets out of prison and is immediately dragged back into the life against his will. He likes to relax by taking old car pieces and turning them into sculptures, though he doesn't think of it as art until some annoying bitch gallery owner (Rebecca Romijn) comes along and discovers him.

Really, the movie isn't particularly good. Rossif Sutherland has almost none of the charm of his father and half brother. One bit did make me laugh, though. The gallery owner and her assistant agree that grand theft auto is totally not sexy. So she starts giving him a persona, "You're an emerging artist with a shady criminal past, very temperamental. You did time for a crime you don't like to talk about, and you learned it all in C-block." To which he responds, "C-block was for child molesters." "Whatever." That was funny. Also there's a part where dude has to pee in front of his parole officer while the guy tries to help out by giving relaxation tips in an overblown Indian accent. Remind me never to get put on parole.

Anyway, that's today's random Netflix viewing experience. If you haven't voted in the most recent round of fantasy fights, go do that.

The quarter finals continue. I kind of like the way this has gotten so spaced out. Makes it seem fresh every time.
For the uninitiated, these are one-on-one battles between the characters I will be describing. It's a single-elimination tournament (just like life). First off, I'll give the results of the previous round, complete with little fight descriptions, and then I'll give you the combatants for this round. Vote in a journal comment, choosing the one person you think would win from each of the current round fights.

      Previous round results:
      Leonidas vs Napoleon
So Leonidas steps out onto the field wearing that outfit from 300, and Napoleon is immediately like, "Dude, put some fucking clothes on!" Only he says it in French. So it sounds all douchey on top of everything. The Spartan just rushes the Little Corporal with his sword, anticipating a quick win, but Napoleon whips out his own blade quicker than the eye can follow and parries the stroke.
The blows fly fast, but the Corsican slowly begins to gain the upper hand. Leonidas is stronger and has better reach, but Napoleon is quick and has some serious modern technique going for him. Finally the emperor knocks the king off balance and at the same moment pulls a pistol from his belt and sends a ball flying right into the other guy's bare chest. Leonidas looks down, stunned, having no idea what's just happened to him, and the Frenchman smiles smugly, but instead of falling the Spartan king get pissed. He hauls off and throws his sword, which sinks to the hilt in his opponent's chest and sticks several inches out the back. Napoleon is dead before he hits the ground, and the half-naked guy takes the round, just barely.

      Teddy Roosevelt vs George Patton
Two of the manliest Americans ever decide to go face to face in a straight up bare-knuckle brawl. Patton is quick. He gets in a one-two combination fast, setting the inventor of big stick diplomacy back on his heels, but Teddy has been boxing most of his life. Patton, always ready to believe the best of himself moves in for a quick finish, but it was a feint. Teddy blocks the next shot and then sends a powerful right cross against the general's jaw. A quick follow-up to the sternum knocks the wind out of his opponent, however briefly, then a shot to the kidneys bends him over in pain and a final double-fisted over head shot sends Patton to the ground, and he doesn't move again. Don't fuck with a rough rider, son.

      Now let's finish the quarter-finals:

      Round 1:
      Timur vs Genghis Khan
      Timgen-1.jpg

This is kind of an interesting matchup, because Timur actually took his inspiration from Genghis. Living 100-200 years after Khan, Timur a Turk of Mongol descent, decided that he wanted to bring back the great Mongol empire. So he went off and started killing fools. Starting in Turkey and other areas around the Black Sea, he conquered territory and killed people all the way through the Middle East and nearly to China. The thing was, he wasn't your nice, friendly, kill your men, rape your women sort of guy. He was more of a kill everyone in sight, man, woman, or child and then stack their skulls up in giant piles so that any other mother fucker who comes by will know who the fuck I am. No, seriously. He liked to stack skulls. I guess it was faster than building pyramids out of stone. 70,000 skulls in Isfahan, 20,000 in Aleppo. He herded thousands of civilians into the Cathedral Mosque in Damascus before setting it on fire. 70,000 beheaded in Tikrit. 90,000 in Baghdad. In battle he smashed the famous Golden Horde, left Delhi in ruins (reportedly beheading 10,000 people in 1 hour), So, yeah, sweet guy. He killed Xerxes and Stalin to make it this far in the tournament.

Genghis, on the other hand, was the guy who Timur looked up to. He began the creation of the largest congruous empire in history. The Khan's armies conquered 13 million square miles and killed 35-40 million people. So for every mile this guy went, he killed 3 people. And while he was doing that he slept with so many women that there are estimates that .5% of the current world population is descended from him. Who's your daddy? Khan has, so far, sliced his way through Charlemagne and George Washington.

      Round 2:
      Sam Houston vs Abraham Lincoln
      samabe-1.jpg

Sam Houston killed Julius Caesar and Winston Churchill in previous rounds. This man is the personification of Texas. He wasn't from Texas, but he helped found it, which is close enough for us. The only man ever to be governor of two different states, not to mention president of a country. One of the few prominent citizens in US history to be respected enough by a Native American tribe (the Cherokee) that they adopted him. One day while he was governor of Tennessee, he was in DC, and some congressman from Ohio started talking shit about him in congress. Houston confronted him and started beating him with his hickory stick. The guy drew a pistol stuck it right in Houston's chest and pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired. Sam Houston kicked so much ass that even guns were scared to fuck with him. He was put on trial and ended up being fined $500, but instead of paying it, he went to Texas where we made him a general and put him in command of the Texas Army. He beat the shit out of the Mexicans and helped Texas become independent. Then he became president of Texas.

Lincoln has beat down Fidel Castro and Vlad the Impaler to get to this point. He was a big guy, 6' 4", who cut a pretty intimidating figure from all accounts. He didn't do a lot of fighting. He was a political man from his early years, but he was also a tough frontiersman, log cabin and all that. Accustomed to swinging an axe and a talented wrestler. Strong guy with a huge force of will. So intimidating that even when JWB came to shoot him, he did it from behind,

    • Jury duty again

      datalaughing Always Right

So I had to go in for jury duty again today. Didn't end up getting picked this time, but that didn't keep me from having to sit around and listen to people talk from 8 to 5, well, 8:30 to 4:30, but still. And since they didn't give us any factual information about the case, just sort of vague hints, there's nothing that says I can't talk about what happened.

From what I can gather, the case was about a dude who gave a woman HIV, and the prosecution was calling it assault with a deadly weapon. I'm kinda sad I didn't get to hear all about this one, because it sounded interesting.

Basically the bits that I saw were the lawyers talking for fucking ever and then asking people questions. There were 50 potential jurors in the room and the DA actually went through the whole room on a couple of the questions, asking every single person. He asked everyone if they thought HIV could qualify as a deadly weapon and if they were comfortable with the fact that to be guilty of the crime by the legal definition the assault could be either intentional or reckless, meaning that if the guy knew he had HIV and didn't bother to take the precautions any "normal" person would take to prevent giving it to someone else, he would be guilty for being reckless.

When it got to me I was like, I don't really think it matters whether I'm comfortable with the fact that being reckless would make him guilty. That's what the law says. The jury's duty is to determine whether or not the law was broken, not to decide whether or not they think the law is right. That's what the legislature is for, to decide on how the laws should be written. The jury is supposed to be objectively using the laws and the facts to make a decision, not trying to use the case as an opportunity to push their own agendas about how they think the laws should go.

Maybe that's why I didn't get picked. Though it's more likely because of what I said to the defense attorney when it was his turn. He also talked for a long time, and he made a point of saying repeatedly that all the stuff he and the DA were saying wasn't in any way evidence and shouldn't be considered when you're thinking about the case. The judge is supposed to tell you what the law is and the witnesses are supposed to tell you what the facts are, and that's all you're really supposed to be using.

Then he went around and asked a bunch of people what they thought might be issues in the case given what they'd heard so far. People came out with all sorts of stuff, but when he got to me I was like, "I prefer not to hypothesize without data. Because when you do that you end up trying to fit the facts into your theory and not fit a theory to the facts." I'll admit, I pretty much stole that verbatim from Sherlock Holmes, but whatever. Not like anyone probably picked up on it. And he's like, I'm just asking you what you think is going to happen in the case, and I was like, you're asking us to start coming up with theories about what's going to happen in the case while at the same time telling us that it's inappropriate to use anything that we've heard so far to come up with those theories. You might as well ask me what I think is going to happen in the case across the hall. At least then the situation wouldn't require me to maintain objectivity about it.

Then he moved on to someone else.

So what do you guys think. If you give someone HIV, could it be assault with a deadly weapon? What about that other crap I mentioned. Any thoughts?

    • Funniest thing to come out of ACA so far

      datalaughing Always Right

ACA is the Affordable Care Act, that healthcare legislation everyone was so eager to get passed a while back even though most people had no idea what it actually said. Me, I don't care. I have health insurance. So it doesn't change shit for me.

Anyway, the most basic premise is that, by the time everything is in place in like 2014, everyone will be able to get health insurance and everyone will be required to get health insurance. Part of this that has already gone into action is that the age of dependent children you can put on your health insurance was mandated to be up to 26. Different companies had different cutoff ages for dependents, 21, 23, whatever. Now companies have to let kids be on their parents' plan until they're 26.

And believe me, insurance companies aren't crying their eyes out about this one. That's thousands upon thousands of new members that they're getting premiums for and right at the age where they're least likely to be contracting serious illnesses and least likely to have access to insurance through employers or someone.

Here's the funny bit, though. Because the legislation is intended to make sure everyone has access to health insurance, the parents no longer get a choice in the matter. So say your kid is a jobless drug addict who got kicked out of the house at 22 because he sold all of mom's jewelry for crack. If he can come out of his drugged-up haze for long enough to call your health insurance company, he can get on the policy, and you have to pay premiums, coinsurance, deductible, whatever for him. You don't get a choice.

This has led to a large number of calls from unhappy parents, which are invariably hilarious (at least to me, although not to the harried customer service people who have to actually answer them). I love you, America. You always know how to make me laugh.

    • Random question

      datalaughing Always Right

You are given the opportunity to travel back in time and give a message to yourself. The condition is, it can't be anything useful or helpful or anything like that. Basically it's a big practical joke. You're only allowed to mess with your past self's head.

Would you do it? If so, when would you go back to and what would you tell yourself?

I think I would have to do it, just because how often do you get the opportunity to time travel (well, other than the travel we're all doing all the time), regardless of the restrictions. And I would have to go with something cryptic but meaningless, like in that episode of SG-1 where evil parallel Mitchell is like, "When the time comes, cut the green one." And then nothing ever happens.

As a follow-up, let's say the same restrictions apply, but instead of yourself, you get to deliver a message to someone else. Who and what?

    • DCUO, PS3

      datalaughing Always Right

That title just looks weird. Whatever.

So I downloaded and started playing DC Universe Online on the PS3 last month. Because it's free now so why the hell not, right? Anyway, it was pretty fun. It has a lot less depth than other MMOs I've played, but you can't ask for too much. If you haven't tried it out, you totally should. Though you have to download the whole game onto the PS3, which took me like 8 hours, but *shrug*

I know a few other people started playing the game recently also, Erok, Drums, Raynos, etc. So I thought I'd put up this journal as a starting point to get people together to play some. MMOs are way more fun when you play with other people you know.

So who's got the game, and wants to try to play? And details. I know Raynos, Erok, and myself are all on the PvE server, and the two of them have heroes. So I just rolled up a hero for myself. Also, what power, weapon, etc did you pick? My guy uses dual pistols and sorcery. I picked sorcery because it's where you go if you want to be able to play a healing role, and if my hero is the one I'm gonna hopefully be using for grouping with other people, healer is like the most important but toughest role to fill in my experience with other MMOs.

So, anybody want to give it a go?

Ooh, that'd have been good... except the phone network doesn't work like that over here. Tracing is instant and is a standard feature in most landlines, just dial 1471 to find out the number of your last caller. To trace a withheld or foreign number you just have to get in touch with your operator and have good cause... scary what they can access at the click of a mouse, they could probably get an instant trace on someone on your side of the pond LOL

It would, however, have been nice to make her squirm a bit smiley0.gif
