I am in a quandry. What to read next?

So, last week Jim Butcher's new book came out, The Aeronaut's Windlass, first book in his Cinder Spires series. I'm not particularly into steampunk, but it was a lot of fun. It's not The Dresden Files, but what can be? Also, the man really knows how to write a cat's perspective. It's uncanny.

After I finished that I had some time to kill before this week came around. So I started in on Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy (thank you for the recommendation, Patrick Rothfuss). I'm almost done with book 3 (they're all pretty good, but book 1 is really the best IMO), just in time because two new books came out today.

And therein lies the problem. I picked up two new ebooks (wtf, iPhone, "ebooks" should not autocorrect to "snooks." What the hell is a snook?) today. One of them is the first entry in Rick Riordan's new series. He did Greek mythology with Percy Jackson (technically Roman mythology too with Heroes of Olympus). He did Egyptian mythology with The Kane Chronicles. Now we have Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard. So that's my first new book today, The Sword of Summer.

Secondly, there's Brandon Sanderson's new book. It's the second book in his Mistborn Adventures trilogy. He said after the first Mistborn trilogy that the series would be a trilogy of trilogies. This is the second trilogy, but it's not the official second trilogy. It's an unexpected bonus trilogy that's set between the first trilogy and the planned second trilogy. Why? Because Sanderson writes a ridiculous number of books but never what you think he's going to write. So that's choice number 2, Shadows of Self.

What do you guys think? Which one should I start next?

Just returned from my Alaskan cruise. It was awesome. Did lots of fun things. Ate lots of good food, probably way too much food, but whatever.

We spent yesterday evening in Victoria, BC, Canada. Pretty neat place. We mainly walked around in the area not terribly far from the cruise ship dock. We found a nice little place for dinner called Harbour House, amazing steak and lobster.

Age of Ultron was playing at the nearby IMAX, but after stopping there we decided it would be cutting it too close to the ship's departure time to try and see it. Very sad. After that, we walked around a bit, hoping to stumble across a Tim Horton's, because my girlfriend had read that they have free wifi. As it turns out, there is not, in fact, a Tim Horton's on every corner in Canada. Shocking, I know. We did find a Starbucks though.

Anyway, it was a great time, but tired now.

We landed in Ketchikan, Alaska today. Unfortunatley, the geocaching shore excursion we had booked was cancelled. So we're exploring a small tourist town. Same stuff in most every shop. It's not a stunning start. That being said, the first couple days on the boat were great. Lots of fun. Great food. Entertaining things. So we may give up on Ketchikan here in a bit and go back aboard.

So it's going to be a busy month for me.

Start out small, tomorrow evening my brother and I are going to see Dragonball Z: Resurrection of F in its limited North American theatrical release. And when I say limited, I mean really limited. It's showing exactly twice where we live, once today at 4 and once tomorrow at 7. So we just had to check it out.

The following morning, my girlfriend and I leave for RTX. Who am I going to run into this year? Let me know in the comments.

We've both got weekend RTX passes and all-access Sidequest badges, along with tickets for Master Pancake does Twister on Friday night (thanks for the idea, @Zack), and reservations at Fogo De Chao before the movie. So I expect it to be a busy and awesome weekend all around.

Its actually sort of a double vacation. RTX is my half. We get back from RTX on Monday night, and then Friday we leave again. We're flying to Seattle where she has us booked on a seven day Alaskan cruise. I've never been on a cruise before, but we've got several fun shore excursions booked as well as the special dining package for all the best onboard restaurants. I'm very excited.

So, yeah, August is going to be a busy time, and right now I want to be doing anything but working, which is why I wrote this journal instead. Excite!

After much experimenting, I've decided this profile cover thing is complete shit. I've tried a bunch of images, many different sizes and shapes, and it continues to look like shit. However it decides what part of the image to use, I haven't figured it out. Sometimes it takes the top, sometimes the middle. I pick an image that should be long enough to get all in there, and it stretches it out and then cuts off the sides and top and bottom to get the most awkward section possible. So I give up for now. After 20 different tries, this one looks the least like complete and utter shit. So enjoy.

      In reply to datalaughing, #2:

The correct response to that is:

"I've got a dagger for your mystic furnace.

      ...

      It's in my pants.

      ...

      ...

      The dagger is my penis."

VistaVision was an extremely high-def filming technique. I hear that The Searchers is one of the best blu-ray restorations currently available. That was 1953 or so.

theatre hoppers... not just low down dirty cheaters, but also rude fucks as their actions disturb the customers who actually paid...

Just to check, we're starting off an idea in the Vodka Vat group that bears a lot of similarities to Fantasy Fights, except with actual participants instead of characters or historical figures... I'm fairly sure you won't mind us drawing the parallel to help others understand it, but it occurred to me I should check with you.
Also, if you wanted to be one of the combatants, that would rock.

If you weren't so suspicious of me, it'd be your first clue, since it's clearly not the thread I mentioned.

Oh, and here's one of those proofs you apparently wanted earlier.
It's a thread I mentioned I made, which you could have seen on my profile.

The issue in Waco isn't money, it's trying to find a place in a not-horrible part of town that isn't already claimed by Baylor students or permanent residents. Not that I would know, I lived in the same dorm all 3 years. But I heard about it from everybody else I knew who got apartments. At the very least, I can get you info on where to look, if you want.
