I had dinner at probably the WORST Ryan's in the world. Seriously. My stomach hurts, and not in a good way. A good way for your stomach to hurt, you ask? Yeah, I don't have one. It's just a figure of speech, asslick. Take it for what it is and move on. Seriously, why are you going to harp on something as stupid as "a good way for your stomach to hurt"? Have you nothing better to do with your day? Fine, you stay here, I'm moving on. Jerk.

Aside from dinner sucking balls (no, not literally... sheesh, you won't leave anything alone, will you?), today actually wasn't that bad. There's an important part to my new job: no one in senior managment seemed to realize when they gave it to me the amount of responsibility I'd actually have. When they gave me the job, they thought I'd just be working for the Exhaust division. When I got the job, I knew that the Exhaust division was no work at all and started working on the entire country. I keep finding out more and more that the people in charge hear what I'm doing and go "huh... I thought he was only going to...". That's fine. That means I'm exceeding expectations. It also means that I get to define my own job. That means I get to do what I want. Somehow, that means I get to travel a lot to places I don't want to go, spending my own money and waiting for reimbursements which take weeks to happen. I think I'm doing something wrong.

Small aside: We did our annual performance reviews in December. We're graded on a scale from A to F, with C being average. Everyone gets a C. It's a French thing, supposedly to promote growth by showing you it's there but never being able to achieve it because we're always growing or some stupid shit like that. It's practically impossible to get an "always exceeds expectations" A (I told Christie today that someone who gets an A would have to be all of the senior management at a production facility, and that facility would have to be the top performing facility in the country, if not the world, and then that person might get an A - although I think the CEO can give himself an A if he wants). I found out today that the "exceeds expectations" B's are highly restricted. Departments are limited to the number of Bs they can give out, and they actually have meetings among department managers to unanimously agree on who gets a B. I got a B this year. What that tells me, in relation to paragraph 2 above, is that I can do whatever the hell I want, no matter what they think I'm supposed to be doing. For that matter, if they think one thing and I'm doing ten times that, maybe I'll get another B next year.

It's hard to do schoolwork on the road. I wanted to do math homework tonight, but I have no paper to use for scratch. I wanted to do psychology but I left the chapter in the car and am already in my slippers which are NOT going outside in the snow. I wanted to do my management quiz but taking the practice quiz over and over is boring as hell. I guess I'll do it tomorrow. Unless someone wants to do it for me... ... ... ...? Ah well. Thought I'd ask.

Tomorrow I get to do a physical inventory of equipment in the plant I'm visiting this week. Should be fun. At least the materials chick whose help I need to find all the equipment is kinda cute. Annoying, but kinda cute. It'll do.

    • Why don't we have a plant in Vegas?

I think I'm already at the point where traveling full-time is getting to me, and it's only my third week. The good news is that this means I'll reach the acceptance stage relatively quickly!

It wouldn't bother me so bad if we had plants somewhere fun. But no. I spent the first week of the year in Toledo, the second week in North Detroit (tm), and now I'm in Granger Indiana. Imagine the most northern point in Indiana, and what you think might be there. If you guessed "nothing", then you're pretty close. Apparently, slightly west of here (less than 10 miles) is Notre Dame and St Mary's. Around there is lots to do, with lots of fun college kids doing it. Sounds like a blast - until you realize you're still in Northern Indiana, where the population of regular people is horrendously outclassed by bumpkins.

Finding something fun to do is of course complicated by the fact that I drove directly into a lake-effect snowstorm. Expecting 4 inches by the morning, all with a fair complement of ice. Just leaving my car along for an hour makes me have to scrape it. On one hand, I'm glad I'm going to leave Thursday morning instead of Wednesday night; means I won't have to try to drive back in the bad weather AND the dark (driving HERE in the dark was bad enough!). However, that means I'll have one additional night in boredomville. At least the company pays me to drink... although they don't entirely realize that's what they're paying for. Fries + vodka = dinner. I'm starting to think the only way to have fun is to bring my own hookers... but I don't want Cincinnati or Dayton hookers, which means I'd even have to import those!

My wife and brother-in-law laughed at me because I was afraid to try to figure out how the online math class software worked. That has nothing to do with the above; I just thought I'd throw it in there for ya.

Looks like next week, which was originally going to be empty, now has another trip to Toledo on Tuesday/Wednesday. This will all be less obnoxious when they pay me for my expenses. I'm already out a grand, and I had to put off my car payments until the end of the month to free up some cash. When they pay it back, it'll all be better. Till then, I have no idea how I'm managing to pull this off. Spit and bubble gum on my checking account. As long as they pay me back before my trips to South Carolina and Florida (see... I'm ALREADY in the acceptance stage! those two should be FUN...). If not, I'm going to cry. And they don't want to make me cry. I'll lock down their network.

I wonder how my boss would react if he was locked out of the network. That would be pretty funny....

Short version - if you find me, you can add me.

I'm stuck in Michigan this week at a Motel 6 with no internet, so all my plans have gone awry as far as getting online more (but Motel 6 for 4 nights is $150, whereas the Hampton Inn nextdoor that they wanted to put me up at is $130 per night... I'll give up internet for that). Messing with my schoolwork too (Apparently I can only do Math online, minus the 4 tests that I have to take on campus! What's the point of an online class if I have to take 4(!) tests on campus??), but at least I can still read the chapters even if I can't do much else right now. Maybe I'll have better luck next week in Cornhole County, Indiana.

I figure now's a good time to finish up my "What have you missed" column. It's a good time because I'm sitting in a hotel room in Toledo OH with my thumb up my butt and nothing to do.

Okay, that's not entirely true. I brought some movies to watch on my laptop. The thumb part is totally true, though. Smells like roses. Roses and victory.

About three months ago, October-ish or so, I was going back and forth with a bunch of people about barcode stuff. The short version is that there was no one taking care of it, except one poor woman in Toledo who got stuck with it when the last chick who used to do it quit. Aside from her, I was the only one who really knew anything about it. So after a few arguments, disagreements, bottles of wine (at least for me), and an ice pack (for that one guy's black eye... he totally started it), my boss finally went up to Toledo to talk to Pat (the poor woman doing the job) about it. An hour or so after the meeting, he called me and asked me if I wanted it. I said yes. So now I'm no longer doing tech support for three plants in the Dayton area. I'm now managing the barcode functions, hardware and software, for all of North America, including those pesky Cananadians and the amigos down south (3 small plants in Canada, 4 really frickin big ones in Mexico).

The up side: I no longer have to deal with really stupid questions like "Where did my file go" and "How do I print". The questions are still stupid, but they're a different kind of stupid. Actually, "How do I print" is still a valid question. For that matter, so is "Where did my file go". Dammit. The questions haven't actually changed at all. I just have more idiots to deal with now. Let's try this again...

The up side: I got a small raise (really small, but the overtime will off-set it, cuz I get overtime now for a completely unrelated reason). I'm also going to be doing a lot of traveling.

The down side: I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling. In theory, I should visit every plant we have in North America by the end of this year. That's 28 plants in 3 different countries. I'm visiting three of them in the next two weeks. This week I'm in Toledo for some training. Next week I'm in Michigan for two plants that are having problems. The week after I'm going to Granger Indiana (read: bumfuck nowhere, slightly northeast of corn). First week of February I'm going to Fountain Inn, South Carolina for a week. End of the second week they're sending me to some conference (provided I can afford to stay there for a week) in St. Augustine FL. Chances are good that once I fix the two Michigan plants next week, others will call and say "Hey, come up here!" and fill in my middle days. It's a LOT. But it's cool. I guess.

Christie still works at the craft store. Got her brother Ray a job there too. They both make a TON of money for retail. I think we've figured out they're likely the highest paid non-owning-family people in the store. They're liked. Well liked. Ray's talking about moving out, which is nice.

In short, things are going good. I can't complain. I still will, though. I do still work in automotive, which is a pain in the ass.

    • Ketchup pt 1 - House & School

      dingolord

When last we saw our hero (Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?) he had takeneth upon himselfeth two major undertakings. Firsteth, he boughteth a houseth. Secondeth, he startedeth collegeth.

The house has actually not fallen down, nor exploded, nor caught fire in any way, nor been flooded in major or minor ways, nor been host to parties, nor been nicknamed "the Love Shack", nor been swallowed by a giant whale (I always wonder, did the same whale get Gepetto, Capt. Ahab and Jonah, or were they different whales who all heard the stories of the whales before them swallowing men alive and thought, "Yeah, that could be me"?), nor been eaten by kangaroos, nor become a clockwork machine capable of transforming from house to choo-choo train to robotic lion (the black lion, of course), nor been dismantled and sold for scrap on the black market where 45-year-old wiring and shingles fetch a pretty high price. In fact, the house is in pretty decent shape. Not perfect, but decent. Turns out the electricity is almost as bad as the plumbing was when we first moved in, and it's first on my list to fix when I get the money saved up this year - total cost of about $1500 to replace the fuse box with circuit breakers and run new wiring to break the house into more circuits which won't blow fuses or trip breakers if you plug in Christmas lights and try to run a space heater at the same time - but the rest of the house, even with its problems, is livable, and we've been living the hell out of it. Still a lot of things that need to be fixed - electricity, new roof, new doors/windows, yard, tree cuttings away from power lines, new drainage pipe in the front yard sometime before I die, etc - but it's otherwise just fine. Christie's brother still lives with us, but he just got a raise and is considering moving out (which, honestly, I'm okay either way, since it's not like he gets in the way of nookie time... usually because there's no nookie time for him to get in the way of, so it all works out okay!). Still only two cats, but I'm feeding the strays outside through the winter because I'm that kind of nice guy. Besides, we don't need any other animals in here, unless we can figure out how to kidnap Christie's boss' Yorkie.

Two quarters of college are done successfully. Umpteen dozen to go. We actually missed the summer quarter because I was so worried about the first quarter that I didn't think to renew all the paperwork. Fall quarter worked out okay, though. For winter, we're taking three classes, which is going to be tough now that my job's changed (more on that later) but it'll be good to get it out of the way. At least they're all online classes this time around. One thing we've learned that we already knew is that we can't stand stupid people, and classrooms are full of them. More so than even we imagined. Classes start again on the 7th, and I'm trying very hard to not forget.

And so completes the tale "The DL on DL", part uno. Join us next time when we examine in intricate detail the struggles and trials of the common Dingo, including his daily struggles at something the locals describe as "work", and the challenges faced when attempting to complete common, everyday tasks with only two arms and two legs to work with, when the tasks so obviously require four arms, six legs, three heads, seventeen fingers (all middle), and the ability to be in a gross places at once (that's gross = twelve dozen, if you are bad at math).

Hi. How are you? Good? Bad? So-so? Filled with elation? Filled with regret? Filled with joy? Filled with poop? Made of cake? Devil's food with a cream filling?

So, yeah. I'll start by saying I'm shocked that you're still watching me. Either you're a good friend, a pack rat, or just a dirty person who never cleans their stuff. Plenty of room on the internet for it all, right? They're not cleaning YouTube, so why should I clean out my watchlist? Dozens of bytes wasted simply because you don't want to take the time to click remove on the things that don't update any longer. Dozens of bytes that could have been used to feed some poor hungry computer wurm who's just trying to make ends meet - and become an infinite loop. But no. You had to waste those bytes. It's shameful. There are servers in China, India, and even right here in the U.S. crying daily because they don't have the bytes to survive, and you're just sitting there wasting bytes like they're not important. "Well I have plenty of bytes," you say as you watch them sitting there, doing nothing useful but still belonging to you. Selfish.

Which is, of course, the true meaning of Christmas. God Bless Us, Everyone (I assume because we sneezed - mistletoe allergies).

Anyway, I'm going to try to come back around more often. I've even moved the link to the page up to my links bar. See?
      95841092mt5.jpg

Okay, so that's kinda hard to see, but it's right there at the end by all that blank space. That proves it. So I'll try to come back and visit, just to see if anyone comes back around. If not, I'll have to hunt you down. That should be interesting. Especially since it looks like half my friends list vanished on me, which will make the game all that much more fun. Good luck to me remembering everyone who was on it! Not that I forgot you, you see, but I'm really bad with names.

I did miss you guys (some of you at least), and I'll try to catch you up on the whole lots of nothing that's been going on around here over the next while.

Edit - I just looked at my "About" section. I have no idea when I wrote that. Weird. Googling any part of it just links me back to myself, so it must be something I did. I must have been weird that day, rewriting lyrics into epic poetry.

      Hi.

      We're not dead.

House is still standing and in general working order.

    • Subnetting

in Forums > Subnetting | Follow this topic

      dingolord

Need a little help on this one. I only have the most basic understanding of subnetting and masking (meaning two questions on a cert I passed years ago...).

I've got Corporate Network A, running in the 10.13x.x.x range, subnet mask 255.255.240.0. First off, let me point out that I don't understand why or how the 240 comes into play in the subnet mask - masks confuse me greatly.

I want to install IP-based cameras. I haven't gotten an answer yet, but I do not believe they will let me attach them to Corporate Network A with 10.13x.x.x addresses. France makes stupid rules and North America doesn't do anything to make them better.

As long as the cameras have their own IP-based router to use as a gateway, I should be able to set them up on their own subnet and run it through the same switches, correct? For instance, Camera Router 1 could be at IP 192.168.192.1 with a subnet mask of... something. If I do this, it's my rather-limited understanding that as long as I use a different subnet mask, the two networks shouldn't even see each other, let alone get in each other's way. Then I could put all the cameras and the security system on the 192.168.192.x subnet, with a gateway of 192.168.192.1 and a subnet mask of [insert subnet mask here] and get away with them all running on the same network switches without seeing each other.

How far off-base am I, and what do I need to do to make this work? Please and thank you.

I should be able to get you 500 feet of Cat 5 and I know I can give you 250-500 feet of RG6, it's just not quad shielded. I've got the fittings, still can't find an amp with both forward and return amped, everything is forward with passive return (basically it drops the return signal by like 4 db, so you may want to connect your cable modem separate from the amp)

    • wussie

ewww, that's what you are going to use it for? Ok. I don't have those, I certainly have splitters and fittings for RG6 coming out of my ass. I have a shit ton of forward only amps, still looking through them all to see if I have a forward and return amp.

my RG-6 isn't quad shield, I've got the fittings and splitters, might have a bi directional amp, I'll have to check the amps I have, most of them are forward only, and my Cat 5 is blue not grey. What are the exact lengths you need, cause sending whole spools is nuts, and I am not giving up my only spool of Cat 5.

dingo you retard, you should have told me 4 weeks ago you needed RG-6, Cat 5, and odds and ends for the wires. I have a shit ton. Let me know if you need a cable amp, all you would need to do is pay for shipping.

Hmm.. Now I'm wondering if maybe it would be worth it to extend the initial line to the middle of the house, and have all of the lines be of middle-length rather than some short, some long.... or even crazier, have some sort of serial wiring. I'm picturing all of the jacks having two receptacles, and you have to jumper between them with a short coax in order to get signal further down the line. When any particular room is hooked up, you have to run it through a VCR and pump the output back into the wall. Heh. Just in case you felt like being completely insane with this smiley0.gif

Man, even Star Wars managed to finish a story by the end of the first movie they made. And that one was designed to be a trilogy.

They didn't make the first Saw with the idea of making two more. It was two young director/writers who say in the DVD extras that they didn't put much thought into the movie after they had the initial cool premise.

Yes, lots of movies are made that way.

      But not good ones.

    • espithaca

Saw was bad. The fact that they've made a pair of shitty sequels on it proves this.

It was almost good, but then decided to go for gore instead of story. This also proves that it was bad.

      So there.

Hey now, just 'cause you can't afford her doesn't mean you need to get snippity.

She'd like to remind you that "true love" doesn't cost $50 an hour ($400 for the whole night).

It costs $75 an hour ($600 for the night)

      just breaking up

No, that's what my mom said. And you're clearly still upset about it. She said to ask you to stop sending her your fingernail clippings, it's creeping out her and her other customers.

You're right, they should lose custody. The mother's response to the "whose idea was it" question was pretty damning, or suspicious.

The reason I say grudging is because I'm worried about the precedent. Our nation's attitude for sex ed is already backwards enough. Another example of parents/teachers/anyone teaching kids about sex being punished isn't helping.

Granted, it'd be better if they'd been teaching her how to make responsible decisions rather than different positions...

      This country is messed up.

      Gawd you're such a liberal!

      Or a libertarian...

      Or a pinko commie bastard...

Agreed, the process is really slow. They've got a lot on their plate, though. I think the courts in Providence are still dealing with the nightclub fire that "rocked" the state in 2003.

In this instance, it's (relatively) clear to me that they're not really a threat to society. They'll probably lose custody rights (which I'll grudgingly accept) and probably be fined. I hope they don't get put in prison.

It also says that the girl's been living with her biological father, so there's that to calm you. smile.png

You're right. I'd apologize to the douchebags, but they're douchebags.

There you go with your infallible logic again! lol.png

I don't think you're being fair to douchbags.

Bisexual women, however, like to sleep with hot women. True, some of them aren't going to be pretty, but a pretty bi girl is going to be attracted to someone else who's pretty. Otherwise, they'd just sleep with a man.

This argument makes my head hurt.

This means that your logic must be completely infallible and immune to question.

There are times you are such a flaming liberal. You realize that, right?

If I told you that I'm gay right now, would your head just explode? lol.png

As for the course, it was a cake walk. I don't know that it's such a liberal tactic to sign up for a course because the teacher will be so happy to have a boy in her class that he's basically guaranteed an A, if only because he appears to be *trying*...

They're also more likely to both be hot.

Methinks this statement has absolutely no basis in fact...

As for lesbian scenes, I took a women's studies course in college (for the sociology minor, good times) with a proud 50-year-old bisexual teacher. She used to love pointing out (to the two guys in the class) that lesbian scenes in pornos are idiotic in their use of dildos and other penetrating toys. Her claim being that lesbians don't need a penis to get off.

Almost ruined lesbian scenes for me.

      Almost.

Wait, so who were the girls in that picture? And why do you have their picture lying around at work and not a picture of your old roommates who meant well but had trouble fitting into a society that fears them... ?

You don't want lesbians. You want bisexuals.

      I respectfully disagree.

I, and most men who haven't had the sacred dream dashed by some Ohio cynic, want both.

I'm assuming that's the actual couple... Looks more like a mother daughter thing... That can be hot too... but... actually no, it can't be...

      Dammit, you're ruining the dream.

It's like watching a poorly edited soft core porno where they accidentally let a shot of the Vagoo through that shows the tape/band-aid that they put over it... ><

But you said one of them was underage. So she must've been hawt!

      ...

      Ummm...

      What I meant was...

Wait, they were white trash lesbians? And they didn't look like this?
