Okay, I'm not a toolbar person, but everyone needs the Imageshack Toolbar. Seriously. I hate toolbars. But this one has a screenshot button that automatically takes and uploads a screenshot to Imageshack.us. That's awesome.

At work, our EVPN router decided to stop being a good little router at about noon today. Still down now, 8 hours later. Intermittant connectivity in Franklin. Just intermittant enough to keep the backup ISDN from running. I've been going back and forth with AT&T for hours now. Getting me nowhere. Fun.

Also, apparently that was my bonus that was deposited Saturday. I got an email today telling me it was so. Which means I can spend it. That's nice. Maybe I'll get my wiring done now. Or at least get all my locks changed... stupid house.

      Dragon Fable

It is quite fun. Kinda repetative after awhile, but fun. Which is good. Distractions help me forget about the things that are bothering me. Which are many.

May have gotten a bonus from work that I didn't realize I still qualified for after the reorganization of IT. But since I wasn't expecting it, I'm leaving it in my bank account until someone tells me I'm allowed to spend it. I'm horribly reminded of when I was paid twice at the beginning of the year and they took one of them back...

Plumbing's fixed. Looks like it was tree roots in the drain. We don't have a clean-out in the yard apparently, so they had to go on the roof and run some enormous snake down the pipes to cut through it. Took about 2 hours and cost me $300, but everything drains again. Plumber said he has some kind of foam treatment that kills tree roots we should probably consider getting in a couple weeks, then re-getting once a year to keep it clear. Another $125 I'll have to dig up in a few weeks.

So we went to to the circus. It was fun. Much smaller than a few years ago when the tour had the whole three-ring thing going on. This was more like a kid's production than a circus, but there was more than enough circus stuff to keep us entertained. Acrobats and white tigers and cats and doves and a strongman and stuff. On the way home, the car started to sputter while waiting to get out of the garage. If we hadn't gotten out and to the highway when we did, I think it would have died in downtown Cinci. Feels like something's not firing. Taking it to get it fixed tomorrow, since it's my work car and all. That's probably another $200-300 that I don't have.

Looks like some bills are going to be late this month, and my wiring may not get itself done anytime soon.

Oh, and for those of you who recommended grounding the wires to the plumbing, my plumbing takes up very little of my house, while the ground wires I need to connect are all everywhere else. Plus, with no basement (it's a slab), it makes getting to the plumbing a whole lot harder. If I'm going to run new ground wire, I might as well just run new cable for the outlets. Regardless, I'm not doing much of anything with it right now. Good thing I've still got an expense check in the mail somewhere...

    • Ground wire takes a back seat

Never buy a house when the water hasn't been on for a year. The worst part is that I couldn't get the water turned on until I bought the house. Since the water wasn't on, the inspector couldn't check for plumbing problems.

See where I'm going with this?

Yesterday my friend Kenny fixed the leaking faucets in the laundry room. So today Christie used the washer. And the drainage backed right up into the tub. Plunging the tub caused the toilet to drain. My main drainage pipe is blocked, probably from the fact that no water has gone through it in a year. Plumbers have been called, and will be there this afternoon.

Makes the ground wire thing not nearly as important.

Tonight we're going to the circus. I love the circus. Hopefully it'll help get rid of all the stress.

Today I had someone I work with come over to fix the leak in the washing machine faucets in the laundry room. He's also going to help me replace 20-or-so two-prong outlets with 3-prong outlets. Except there may be no ground wire running to any of those outlets. Which would suck. A lot.

I'm hoping he has some ideas for what to do if there are no ground wires in the outlets. Because I don't have any. I'm not running new electrical cable. I don't have that kind of patience.

Ya know what? Wiring projects are expensive.

Sure, maybe not in the grand scheme of things, but I'm pricing it out now for 6 three-port wallplates (and one spare of everything because I'm a klutz) with one jack each for phone, network and coax video. I'm up to $400 in supplies, can't find the Type 66 punchdown blocks I need for the phone (apparently they're unpopular or something), and now I'm reading that I'll need some kind of video amplifier to compensate for the signal loss across that many coax splits! Oy! Vey! I'm farfalen and ferklempt! Feh!

But I'm no shlemiel. A little chutzpah and this whole cockamammie glitch will be gornisht; bupkis; shmekel.

... that last one may not mean what I think it does. Eh. Whatever.

Edit - Found the punchdowns (another $10) and the amplifier/splitter (another $40). Added BNC crimp ends (which I forgot earlier. 25 cents doesn't seem like much until you need 20 of them. Same with bridge clips.), and repriced some things (I'm using two different stores for this stuff, because no one place has everything I need - but I didn't think to price-check them against each other). Now I'm at a grand total of $460 - give or take.

      {I am, however, going to try to steal some things from work if I can get my hands on them. I think there's a piece of a modular patch panel in a box in Troy East that will work perfect and save me the $40 I'd need to spend on a new 12-port panel. Plus, bridge clips a-plenty if I just look in the right places, and maybe a punchdown block. I'm not above "reusing" items from work that don't currently have a purpose outside of "major emergency spare only to be used if something's on fire or worse".}

You know the one big thing I hate about working in IT? The biggest, most annoying part of it all?

Asking other people in my department for help and being treated like an idiot user.

An exact copy-and-paste of an email conversation I just had with a girl in Michigan:

      Hey Stacey,

Is there any chance you have a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Standard 7.0 install CD (or a network location for the install) in Troy? Adobe's website only offers 8.0 now, and I don't have the install files to transfer a 7.0 license from one PC to another.

      Thanks!
Hi Steveâ€'We do have the software, but the strain on the WAN if you transferred it would be huge (and very slow)…the site below should allow you to download ver. 7.0 from the web. Let me know if you need anything else.

      www.adobe-reader.org/default.asp?aff=3

Notice the above obviously says "reader". Any idiot can find the Reader. Why would I ask for that? Besides, when's the last time Adobe Reader had an install CD?? Finally, since when is 20MB going to cause "strain on the WAN"? Wouldn't the same download from the Internet cause the exact same kind of strain?

Actually, I'm looking for the Suite package, not the Reader.
Sorry about that…since it is a licensed app, have you purchased the license?

I swear I already said that. Yep, there it is, right there in the first email where I explained exactly what and why I was looking for. And now we're four emails into re-explaining it all.

Yep. I've got a license on one system that I need to move to another one, but I don't have the install disk. Idiot
I’ll get a disk burned and shipped down to you. I won’t be able to get to it today since I’m out in Auburn Hills, but I’ll take care of it tomorrow for you! This way you’ll have a disk available for future reference.

"Future reference"?? Not that I'm complaining about getting the CD, mind you (provided it's the right thing when it gets here), but what's the "future reference" bit? "This isn't working... if only I had that Adobe Acrobat CD to refer to... Oh! There it is! Sure am glad I had this lying around for future reference!"

You're in IT, I'm in IT, so let's just assume for a minute that we both know what we're talking about, k? Doctor's don't do this kind of thing to each other. "Well Dr. Franks, I see here from your records that you suffer from diabetes. Do you know what that means?" Scientists don't do this kind of thing to each other. "You need to borrow my microscope? For what reason? Oh, to look at microscopic things. Well, are you sure you know how to use it? Just turn that knob there to focus..." Why in hell do IT people do it to each other? Don't talk to me like I'm stupid.

I don't even talk to *my* users like that. Then again, I always take the high road and assume that people can communicate on my level until they prove otherwise.

Which reminds me - Journal translation for Eric P.:

My job is stupid. People are mean. Girls don't like me. I pooped.

This morning, our new range was delivered. We bought it from Lowes on Friday evening, and scheduled it to be delivered today (so that I had all day yesterday to shovel the drive, you see). They called this morning and said they'd be there between 10:00 and 12:00. I got to the house at about 9:45 and started taking care of some things (mostly moving the realtor's stuff towards the garage door so that it was easier for her to get it out when she finally showed up). I also started taking note of more stupid little things that need to be fixed (like the fact that there's no door on one of the bedrooms, and there's a huge access panel hole in the laundry room that needs to be covered). I've got a nice long list of stupid fixes that need to be done. I didn't realize I was buying a recently-renovated fixer-upper...

Anyway, Lowes in their gigantic delivery truck showed up at 11:30 - well within their timeline. They couldn't get their lift gate down while parked in the driveway, so they had to park in the street (but the act of trying and driving their humungous truck into the driveway broke up the last ice holdout at the bottom of the driveway, so I was able to finish shoveling it clean). They asked me if I had an old range to take away. I told them I didn't, but they could have the old washer and dryer if they wanted. I didn't expect them to actually agree! One guy came in and helped me disconnect the washer and dryer while the other loaded the range on the dolly and brought it in. Then that guy took out the washer and dryer while the first guy hooked up the range. He even went so far as to set the time on the clock on it. They apologized for making a mess in the kitchen, they kicked their feet off before they walked on the carpet, and they thanked me for shoveling my driveway before they showed up. They were just the nicest delivery/installation people I've ever dealt with. And Lowes officially has all my home improvement purchase business from now on.

I ran into the non-realtor chick who helped with the place today when she came to pick up her three-quarters of the stuff. She was nice, but more than that, she was there to pick up her stuff. Made me happy. The realtor still hadn't shown up to pick up the rest of it before I left again, though. After Christie got off work, we went back to the house so she could take pictures, and the rest of the stuff was gone. The realtor had left her last key... and a check for $500. When we closed on Thursday, she mentioned to us that she knew we needed our earnest money check back (the money we gave to her to solidify our bid on the house), and would find out what happened to it. We didn't ask her about it - it was all her bringing it up. I knew what would happen to it. The realty company would make out a check to the seller as an addition to the final sales price. That's what happens to it. I haven't heard from the realtor since the closing (even though I emailed her to ask some questions), so I wasn't expecting anything. But then she left a check for us on the counter. Even with all her faults and all the screw-ups we've had in the process and the broken things the house still has, that $500 that we weren't expecting back was huge, and we've decided to forgive her for being stupid. We're not friends by any means, because I can't stand stupidity unless it's from someone really really hot, but I can now at least say that the business transaction we were a part of ended amicably for both parties.

There's a lot of work to do, but it's not nearly as bad as it could be. We're about 1/3 packed. Moving day is Saturday. We own a house. It's still slightly surreal.

    • I didn't shovel that snow for YOU...

      dingolord

To pick up where I left off, one of the things the realtor/seller/incompetant chick said to us when we left her Thursday was that she hadn't moved any of her stuff out of the house yet (she'd partially staged it with random things here and there), and would start getting them out on Friday, but the bigger stuff would have to wait until Sunday because 1) the driveway had to be shoveled before she could get a truck up it, and 2) she needed her friend (the other incompetant chick) to help her get it out.

Last night, after Christie got off work, we went to Lowes and bought our range. After cords (we didn't know which we needed, so we had to buy two), delivery (but I get a rebate on that, apparently... shame it's not an instant rebate. I have bad luck with rebates) and warranty (comes with 1 year, but 4 additional years parts + labor was only $79.90 - well worth the cost, if you ask me) it came to about $625 - $125 more than we wanted to spend, but $50 for delivery and one of those cords is $20 and you realize it's not so bad after the money comes back.

Because I now had the same problem as the realtor, I took today to shovel the driveway. It's important to know that I shoveled the driveway for myself. It almost pisses me off that I also, by default, had to shovel the driveway for her. Seriously, when you buy a house, realtors and sellers and such are supposed to be nice to you and do things like this for you. She's an idiot. Anyway, it took me 4 hours to get the driveway clean, minus a patch of ice at the bottom I couldn't do anything about because it was a solid almost-4-inches of ice. The only reason I was able to get it done at all is because no one touched it. The first snowstorm was just snow, and that snow was still there. Then we had the freezing rain and ice. Then today we had more snow (all day long... I was shovelling it while it was falling). The driveway was a gigantic ice sandwich, which made it easy to shovel because the ice was just resting on snow and not stuck to anything. It was fun, though. I've never shoveled out my driveway before... smiley1.gif

She just better get her shit out of it now. She hasn't even been there recently. I almost hope she's not been there by the time we move so I can just shove her shit in the garage.

Then I got home and the stupid spoiled chick in the Mazda who lives in the apartment directly behind us parked in my spot. Now, yes, I understand that there's no marked parking at this place, and it's first-come-first-served... but I specifically shoveled out that spot, and the spot next to it, because that's where the two of us have been parking for a week now!!!. It's just courtesy. You don't park in a spot that was obviously shoveled out by someone who is not you. I'm sick of stupid spoiled people thinking the world belongs to them because they exist. The thing that pisses me off even more is that I didn't think of something decent to do (besides slashing her tires, which it took me like two hours to get over... okay, I still want to do it) until it was way too late to do anything about it. So now she gets to sit her look-at-what-daddy-got-me-to-help-me-repress-those-particular-memories car in the spot I spent the time, effort, and ice melt to shovel out and I can't say anything about it.

I may slash her tires when I move out, though. That'll make me feel better.

Overall, I guess I'm all right... A little jet lagged... I'm in Cameroon right now, on the Nigerian border (man this internet cafe is expensive!), waiting for the border to open up.

The new position is pretty good. I'm getting trained in a couple of areas (surveys and webcasts) and the stuff they have me doing already is stuff that I'm moderately comfortable doing.

The site I work for now (SearchNetworkingChannel.techtarget.com) targets "Value Added Resellers," systems integrators and consultants in the Networking field. So I'm being forced to take in a lot. The networking industry is convoluted enough. Now I've gotta figure out how to tell people the best ways to sell it. ><

On the bright side, this media group has better legs than the ExpertAnswerCenter (both literally and figuratively). I think the only thing keeping me from really charging ahead and becoming an Associate Editor is myself.

What about you? You've been on here a bit more lately, but there're still huge gaps in your alibi.

Just got off the phone with them. The summation: The card's been blocked, they're sending me a new one. As for overdrafts and putting money back where it's supposed to be, etc. They can't do anything until the charges go from "Pending" to "Posted." I told her that they won't be making that transition because the people at both places told me that the fraud had been caught on the site.

As for police reports and help, the friendly voice willing to help me out of a jam told me that "until they go from Pending to Posted, they aren't required to help me in that way." *grumble* I mean, I understand, but don't shit on me and then ask for a tip.

She did suggest that I call the local police and get that information (about who I should call) from them. To be honest, since the money's coming back and I'm getting a new card, I'm wondering if I really have the energy to pursue this. Then I tell myself that the little shit could be doing this to someone else as well. Yeah, the Po po are getting a call from this one...

As for the helpful service, Dad told me last night that his account is a "Premium account." Which, in his cynical words, means that we get to sit in the room with the comfy chairs and plush carpet. And because my account's linked to his, I get to benefit from that service.

It was almost comical, hearing the change in their tone of voice as soon as they heard my name and account information...

    • espithaca

I called the Western Union people (as well as Ancestry.com) last night and they were all very helpful. It was a relief to hear that none of the charges had actually gone through. I'm on the phone (on hold) with Bank of America right now.

I'm planning on calling the cops, though my question is: which police. The IP address that the Western Union people saw the transaction coming from was an AOL account in Virginia (though, apparently AOL is based there, so that could be bogus). Also, the dude was trying to send the money to the UK.

So, most likely, this thing happened over state lines, which makes it a federal issue, potentially. Then it crossed international borders, which is even more serious...

I'm done with the first lady at BofA. She blocked my card and is sending me a new one. Now I'm being transferred (more hold music) to the fraud and electronic complaints department who I'm going to ask about police stuff.

      Jolielonghair.jpg
      Or
      JAne3.jpg
      Or
      ali798.jpg
      Or
      Isla3.jpg

Hell, you don't even need to know them, I could throw out this one:
      NPLNXBXMDYHZUAW.jpg
      Or this one:
      LindseyVisnic1.jpg
      Or this one:
      LizaBoyer1.jpg
And if right now you are asking yourself My God, how many does this man have? Just remember, I'm single, male, heterosexual, and twenty three. So the answer is: Yes.

      2) Number two was a journal or something. I’d be able to tell you more, but there are a pair of boobs right above it, which makes concentration hard.

      3) So number three is the equivalent of batting the pass, but my reviver caught it anyway? Sure that means it was a bad throw, but the defender isn’t going to get a bonus in his next check for helping the other team complete a pass.

And seriously, how do we become friends?

      4) Well son, do sumthin’ about it!

And that’s all I’ll say because when it happens to me, I don’t want you coming to my house, hitting play on a boom box and singing the I Was Right Song. Because that song gets annoying when someone is singing it to me (Not annoying at all when I’m signing it to someone else, though).

So does that mean it’s 40-30 now or fourth and long?

In my order of reading your order:

Your order is backwards...wait, no. Forwards. Ok, good job on that front.

      1) Do you know them all? Really? Them all? Well then how about this one?
      jessica_simpson_8.jpg
(No, she wasn’t born today, but what’s a birthday present without pictures of hot women? {A pretty sucky one if you ask me})

      2) Well you could always say “Adam Hughes – He wrote ___ and is a real jerk, Chris Sprouse – he wrote ___ and is a really nice guy, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.â€Â

      3) Not so. Frankfurter was already taken, but the character limit prevented me from choosing Frankfurter4444. (It’s Frankfurter4, by the way)

So I should start looking for your username which never changes...what was it again Martin Alfalfa III? Baraxus? (How’s that for a burn? Buuuuuuurn.)
And I don’t know how to add you as a friend anyway. Tell me how to do that.

      4) See, because you went on, and all I heard was “I’m not going to have sex...ever again.†And then on your behalf, I died a little inside.

If you don't know who those people are or why they are posted there, it's probably because you're old.

And I found some new ones, oldie.

As long as it's not before noon, anytime. We're gonna go to the mall and check out the Cincinnati Bell prepaid cell phones, since we get discount through work.

I think it was a good call to fight him with facts on that one. To someone who didn't know what was going on, I bet he sounded reasonable. But yeah, it's always fun to see a good verbal attack. smiley8.gif

      So whose fault was it?

Entirely hers, she freely admits it. Though the insurance agency is trying to appeal the points that would be added to her license due to the darkness and the rain. She was going to fast up an off ramp and ran up the bumper of an SUV near the top. I've warned her about her tendency to "drive angry." I have not, however, come close to any "I told you so" comments, though.

I've never fully trusted my brakes ever since I went curb-hopping two summers ago, so I'm hypersensitive now. Mebbe this will sensitize her as well.
