CTA Answers only please. Anyone else will have their ears set on fire, because you probably don't know, and I don't need stupid answers.

I've got a Netgear web router (RP114) that I've had for a few years. It's actually been about 18 months since I've used it (and had it work), and the last time I used it was on TW RoadRunner cable internet (which required settings changes for DNS and such - didn't work out of the box). I pulled it back out the other day to connect it to my AT&T DSL - and I get nothing. I know it's a stupid setting that I'm missing (like PPP or PPPoE - which, of course, I never remember). Yes, I reset all the settings changes I had made for RoadRunner.

Things I know about my AT&T DSL:

      1) If I connect it to either my computer or my laptop (not at the same time), I get an IP address. The IP address is always different, and is always one away from my gateway address - which means my modem/gateway is getting a new address every time I renew.

      2) My modem's physical address is 192.168.0.1. My router's physical address used to be the same thing with DHCP starting at .0.2. I fixed that, but it hasn't helped. (I hope I remember what I left it at so I can change settings on it again...)

      3) When I first signed up for it, I got a username (my_phone_#@sbcglobal.net) and password, but I don't know how they tie in to the internet service. My laptop, which doesn't have the AT&T software installed like my desktop does, still connects just fine without a username.

      4) My IP address does not come with a DNS suffix.

Any help appreciated. I'd like to get it working so I can use it instead of having to buy a new one.

    • Oops documents

      dingolord

Today, at 5:00 pm, we closed on our new house. There are a lot of redundant papers to sign at a house closing. Three or four of them were affectionately referred to by the closing agent as "oops documents" - documents we signed saying that, should they screw something up and need us to resign a document, we will resign it. There was also one document named "Signature Certification Document", which was a document we signed certifying that we personally signed all the other documents.... ( smiley10.gif )

We're done, though. We own a house. The realtor still has some crap in it she needs to move out - and she needs to shovel (or have shoveled... we highly doubt she'd do it herself) the driveway out before she can get the big stuff out. We went to visit it tonight, and no one's touched it since the first snow we had. There's about a foot of snow covered with two inches of ice all over the lot. Fun things.

In walking around, I also found that the first things we have to do are rewire the whole thing. There's plenty of electrical outlets... but there's only one cable line (in a weird corner, and with what looks like a 30-year-old jack with 30-year-old coax cable coming out of it) and one phone jack (in the back bedroom, 30-year-old jack, weird wire sticking out of the wall in a rather suggestive manner [suggestive of the phone jack not working, that is] ). There's also no ceiling lights in any rooms. There's a ceiling light in the hallway, and one in the bathroom, and one in the kitchen... and that's it. Need to buy lots of lamps. Oh, and all the blinds that were hung (fortunately, only like three... the other windows are bare) were all cut too short and fell off as soon as we touched them. This place was so obviously renovated by chicks with no idea.

So, we overpaid for the house to cover all the costs because the realtor/seller wasn't going to cover any, we still have at least $1000 worth of work to do to it just to get by, I still need to get the water turned on because she didn't have it on (which means the house was inspected for all but plumbing issues...), fridge may be too big for the space that's marked for it, and we still have a stove to buy. I feel fleeced.

But we have a house. And everything else can be worked out.

We also finished all of our admissions stuff for school. We start on 3/26.

Monday - Working in Franklin. Need to run to the insurance place to sign a couple more forms (switching our life insurance around). Trying to get someone in central payroll to acknowledge me and finally fill out this blasted Employment Verification form that I've needed filled out for three weeks now. We can't close on our house until I get this frickin form back, and no one seems to care. Stupid payroll department. "Oh, let's centralize payroll... that'll make things so much easier for us!" Yeah, unless someone needs something out of them, then they just won't care! Apparently, we outsource our payroll to IBM Tech Support now...

Tuesday - Working in Troy. Everything that's broken right now is broken in Troy. Add to that the fact that it's supposed to ice and snow storm tonight to about 12 inches, and tomorrow should be lots of fun. The only good thing that comes out of it is that I get to feed the two stray kittens that are outside the building. I wish I could find them somewhere warm, but at least I can give them food. I also need to start calling utilities to get things switched over - but there's no point in doing that unless I get my damn verification...

Wednesday - Off work for the rest of the week. Really need to get some packing done, and have a doc appt at 3:00. Although that may all be moot if I don't get my verification form back by then, because I'll drive my ass right up to Troy, Michigan and wail on someone's head until I get it.

Thursday - House closing. May have to explain the bloody smudges on the verification form. Also need to run up to Sinclair and make sure we don't need to do anything else for class registration. Registered for classes late Sunday night (right after midnight, although the website was crap because registration just opened and there was a run on it - didn't get everything finished until 1:30).

Friday/Saturday/Sunday - More packing, and a few hours spent moving boxes that will fit in my car from apartment to house. Will also need to buy a snow shovel. First act as a homeowner - shovel the blasted driveway and sidewalk. Yeah, I'm lovin this. Really.

Christie's brother is going to move in with us once we move. We've got the extra bedroom and all, and he needs to get out of the dump that is southeast Ohio and into an area that actually has jobs. Plus, once he gets a job, he can pay rent, which will give us a few hundred a month extra to fix up the house with. I'm looking forward to that. I figure, if I could live in a one-bedroom apartment with three women (two of them were lesbians, so it wasn't as exciting as it sounds) and a cage full of rats (don't ask - it was California... these things are common there), then I can handle a non-psychotic relative roommate.

    • Taxes suck

      dingolord

Apparently, no one can seem to get my tax withholdings right in this state. This year we owe $181 in Federal taxes, but we're getting $151 back from State taxes. I'm cheating - we E-filed our taxes like we always do, but we're having our State refund direct deposited, while I'm going to mail a check for the Federal. The State refund will clear, then I'll mail the Federal payment, and I'm only out $30 (not counting the $55 in TurboTax fees... which, really, isn't a bad price when it comes right down to it). Take that, system! I'm on to your schemes, and I've got ways around them! So there!!

I also updated my W4 at work to take out an additional $50 per check and subtract one deduction, which will be an additional $1500 or so sent into taxes this year. That should more than cover anything, especially since we'll have education and mortgage interest deductions next year as well.

Still not filing local taxes, because apparently we'd owe them $200 too. I figure I'm going to dodge them until they come and knock on my door - which, according to some people, will never happen so it doesn't matter. They get my withholding money - that should be plenty for them without having to worry about me filing to give them more. Bastards. Besides, if it's a flat 1.5% tax rate on the simplest form ever, why do I even owe money? You'd think these employers could take care of it for me! Stupid stupidheads.

    • The best worst CD ever

      dingolord

Yesterday, I had to drive to Lordstown and back - a total trip of 500 miles. 8 hours of driving. Hell yeah I took some CDs. One of the CDs I took with me is from the late 90s (1998, approximately), from a band called Athenaeum. I don't remember how I ended up with this CD, but I've had it for awhile now. It sucks. It sucks hard, and it sucks long. It sucks so bad it's hysterical, which makes it good again. What's funny about it is that the music itself is actually pretty good. It's the lyrics that blow total chunks. Mixed metaphors, just plain bad metaphors, changes in POV, changes in tense, random off-the-wall lines in the middle of things where they don't belong. Pretty much what you'd expect from a band that calls themselves Athenaeum (which, loosely defined, means "library" or "place of learning"... they need some).

Since everyone should listen to this work of literary genious, I've MP3'd the disk and uploaded it for your download pleasure (zipped, about 60MB).

Some tidbits of the excellent lyrics on this gold-plated disk:

So tough I didn't even wanna chew, your lies were the best I ever knew. (First two lines of Flat Tire - great way to start a song, huh?)

No luck, always in second place. A flat tire on the road to a better place. (I love rhyming "place" with "place". So hardcore. And the metaphor of the flat tire... priceless.)

I don't wanna be in your life if you won't; be alive when I need you the most; not to say that I won't; grieve a little when you pass away. (Heartfelt, ain't it?)

Cause you leave me higher than I can ever say; But my heart's been on fire, and she's gonna find out much too late (First "you" leave me higher, than "she's" gonna find out... I think he sings in asides.)

Too young to have a boyfriend, too old to be alone; You'll sneak him in your bedroom when no one else is home; He'll make you feel rewarded; So blessed and self-assured; You never had a prom date, now you know it's secured. (Um... WTH? Double WTH when you realize this verse is exactly following the last lines I posted. Someone's pining for a teenage slut, apparently...)

Know yourself better than your favorite book on that shelf (deep... very deep. Shortly followed by this gem:)
You can be stronger than the biggest ship out at sea (woah. What other gems does this song hold?)
Step into the spotlight; Overcoming stagefright, and my fear (overcoming fright and fear? Wow!)

      And on an ending note:

Can I get by, without a tear from a broken eye? Can I? Can I?

With lyrics like this, you'd be a fool to pass up this download and stare in horror at your CD-playing-device-of-choice for 48 minutes. Oh, and don't worry about cheating anyone out of money. Atlantic Records dropped these fools after a second pitiful offering, and I'm pretty sure they've destroyed all remaining copies of this garbage, so you couldn't buy it if you wanted to - unless you want to buy it used from Amazon for a dollar. Though all that's doing is allowing some poor music store to dump their garbage on you...

Download it. You know you want to. Share my bad music with me!

Yesterday, I honestly had to tell someone that it is not my job to teach his Gap leader how to use the Shift key. This, after explaining to him that the password he was trying to show me was not going to get him in the program he wanted access to (5 times I had to explain this), and explaining to him that he could email that same guy over and over but that guy doesn't have access to the program he's trying to get access to so it won't help him. He tells me that his Gap leader can't work the password because he "doesn't understand how to do the capitals and numbers" and I need to explain it to him. Fucking morons.

Today, it's so cold outside that my hair froze by the time I got in the car. A spot on the front of my head was still wet when I walked out the door, and by the time I got in the car (maybe 90 seconds), it was frozen. I ran a comb through it and got ice shavings.

A guy in Receiving has been bugging me for weeks that his printer doesn't work. I've been ignoring him - the last time his printer "didn't work" was because they moved it and didn't plug it back in correctly. They'd moved it again. Sure enough, today I'm down there and looking at it and it's because they're still the same fucking morons who moved it the last time. I even explained it to them when I fixed it the first time. Did that stop them from being stupid again? Of course not.

I just finished sitting through a web conference about the new IT ordering procedure, which is now live on an AS400 system I've never used before. Not only that, but while every other business group in North America uses this system, Exhaust (the one I do all my work for) doesn't use it. So if I need to get something approved, I need to get the accountants at my plants to make sure they're using the system right. *I* will be the only reason they need to use the system. Makes me feel real good about making sure I'm able to buy the things I need...

And now the rest of my day is going to be spend moving laptops around and rebuilding five systems (three laptops, two desktops). Minus the part where I have to track down an order I placed for a system four weeks ago. That'll be fun. Stupid manager in Troy (formerly of Taco Bell, now he's a Quality Manager in an exhaust factory... we'll hire anyone) doesn't like the (I'll admit it's quite a bit more than) slightly used system that I gave him to use until his new one gets here. Whatever. He'll just be SOL until his new one gets here then.

The only good news is that I got an email today telling me my total vacation hours for 2007 are 127 (that's three weeks!... that I have to use, no less, because they no longer allow carryover or cashout at the end of the year. I'm heartbroken, really. No, twist my arm and make me take three weeks off. Here. Twist.), and that I've got something fun lined up for the 28th. House still looks like we're closing on the 15th (provided I can kick the shit out of my HR people to finally do a Verification of Employment, cuz shoot me if I don't actually work in this fuckhole), and tomorrow we're going to New Student Orientation at the college. We register for classes on the 12th, and classes start on 3/26.

Now if I can just get through this week without killing someone. Friday I have to drive 4 hours each way to the Lordstown plant, too. I can't bitch about that one, though... I kinda volunteered... stupid stupid stupid.

    • Random things that piss me off

      dingolord

The stupidest thing keeps popping in my head recently. It's one of those phrases that's been around since forever in one way or another, and it's currently a mantra for lazy forum moderators everywhere - "People shouldn't need to be moderated." I actually saw this in passing a couple weeks ago, but it keeps popping into my head and pissing me off over and over. I go to work, and I see enough people dodging responsibility and passing the buck, and this phrase keeps saying itself in the back of my mind.

"People shouldn't need to be moderated" is the same as saying "People shouldn't have to be policed." Well guess what, retards. Yes, in theory, you're right. You shouldn't have to moderate people, because people should be smart enough (and the fact that some people are smart enough proves it) to keep themselves in line without you having to come along behind them and clean up their shit, but you do have to moderate them. If they didn't need to be policed, we wouldn't have police; we wouldn't have prisons; we wouldn't have courts; we wouldn't have shows where cops constantly arrest shirtless rednecks for being dumbasses; we wouldn't have war or pestilence or famine. If no one had to be moderated, we'd live in a utopian paridise where 13-year-olds didn't start misspelled flame wars and think they're tough shit while 35-year-olds acted their age and maturity level instead of their ring size. There wouldn't be internet sex predators trying to pervert your children or identity thieves trying to con your personal information. Last time I checked, though, 99% of people in this world are stupid fucks, so get your lazy heads out of your "I swear it smells like roses up here" asses and do the job you were asked to do. If you're going to take responsibility so you can feel powerful and special and then dodge it by saying "people shouldn't have to be moderated", then you should be yanked out of your special little hole faster than you can say "power mongering fucktard" and thrown back into the ranks of the stupid where you obviously belong. I hope the next time someone breaks into your house the cops don't come. Instead, I hope you call and they answer the phone with "Well, people shouldn't have to be policed."

Now that I'm done with that, I'll catch you up on things here. It's not much. We'll know Monday or Tuesday the results of the appraisal on the house, which is the last thing we're waiting for. If it's good, we're good, and we'll be moved in by the end of February. Tomorrow, I'm picking up a fridge Christie found for sale - some woman is moving and has it in her storage unit. 5 years old, side-by-side 24 cu. ft. ice/water dispenser with filter - $350. We also just finished almost everything for school. In 10 days, we go to Orientation. Then on 2/12, we register for classes. On March 26th, we'll be college students. 11 months and counting until I start looking for a new job with my new college credentials. Stuff to look forward to.

Oh, and if you didn't know about it, Domino's Pizza is actually doing something cool. They've got a $9.99 Deal contest on Ebay right now. Go check it out - but if you beat me out for something I'm going for, I'll kick your ass. Fair warning.

    • Random things that piss me off

      dingolord

Totally random thing that pissed me off today. You've all seen the bumper stickers and license plate brackets that have this phrase on it. Today I saw it on the big LED sign outside of Big Butter Jesus' church.

"Don't drive faster than your guardian angel can fly."

Being in a random mood, this pissed me off entirely. First off, if your guardian angel can't keep up with how fast you drive, or isn't smart enough to get in the damn car to begin with, then you really need a replacement. Second, if he can't keep up with you in the car, you better never get on a plane! You know how much faster they go than cars?? Yeah, next time I'm on a plane, I'm going to question everyone as they board. "Excuse me, does your guardian angel fly this fast? I know mine does, but if yours doesn't I don't want to die by accidentally being too close to you when it all hits." Third, if your church is going to be bold enough to put a giant fucking commandment-breaking idol in front of itself, then it has no right to tell me how to drive. And neither do any of the rest of you freaks with the bumper stickers. I hope all your guardian angels break a wing so you die in a flaming wreck sometime going 20 MPH.

Aside from that, I hate ladders. I don't get paid enough to climb ladders, but apparently no one cares about that. Ladders scare the shit out of me. Doesn't matter how sturdy they are, they still shake to beat all hell. Not to mention you have to hang off the side of a high ledge to put your foot back on it when you're done. I'm not really one for dangling off somewhere waving my foot around until I find something - my balance isn't really all that great anyway, let's not tempt fate, hmm? So anytime I'm on a ladder, I'm nervous. Today, I had to climb that damn thing twice because I screwed up the first time. Screwed up the second time, too, but I sure as hell wasn't going back up the damn thing. Give me a bouncy boom lift any day... they have a cage around the sides so you can't fall quite so easily.

On the house front, I dropped a check off today to the lender to cover the appraisal fee (which is basically another "good faith" payment - I get it back at closing), the seller/realtor is happy with the numbers, and she's going to buy our stove and refrigerator (as long as it comes in under $1000 total - anything above that is our responsibility) before we move in. So, yeah, it looks like it's all set. Closing date is still planned for 2/15, and we're going to do our big move-in the last weekend of February. So it looks like that's all worked out. Although there's still things we'll have to somehow find money for once we've moved in (like a bed for the second bedroom, and we may need to run cable to the bedrooms - I don't think there's jacks in there), at least we'll have the necessities. Minus a dishwasher. Sigh. At least my hands will be soft and clean all the time - except immediately after I come home from work after climbing around downstairs like a monkey. This place is so damn filthy.

    • Breaking up is hard to do

      dingolord

So, maybe we're on track to buy the house after all. Rule number 1 of buying something: If you can't work out a reasonable deal, tell them you're walking away. All of a sudden, everyone's willing to bend over backwards for you. It's a shame I don't think of things like that until I've gotten so stressed out over it that it's pissing me off. Things seem to be better today - the realtor/seller panicked when I said we were done and came forward with "well, I'll buy the appliances you need". I still need to talk her out of forcing her mortgage lender on us, but that should be easier now that I've got numbers back from my second lender, and I've got two on my side. She'll just have to take a hit on the selling price to make it work... which we're pretty sure she will, now that I've threatened to walk away once. Not like it's that bad anyway - she's only losing about $3500. I'm sure she's still making a decent amount off of the deal.

I just want it to be over. At least it seems to be for the weekend, at least. Nothing more to do until Tuesday (unless something comes up on Monday).

I actually took a sports journalism class in college. It was a great time. The professor was one of the regulars in the Journalism department. I had him as a professor in 6 out of 8 semesters.

One of his big things is that he's A) a Raiders fan and B) despises soccer. I mean hates it like he had a traumatic experience when he was young. At the beginning of the Sports J course, he told us that no one was able to write about soccer. He was looking at me as he said this (my reputation as a lover of the beautiful game was well-known even then).

Naturally, every assignment I turned in that semester was about soccer and I got an A in the course. smile.png

Yeah, the president on the TV wasn't intentional. It was the Nightly News talking about Rumsfeld's resignation.

I'm actually pretty neat when it comes down to it. Neater than Amanda. If I have mess, it's usually clothes and I try to keep them in one stop.

I've found that it's different now that I'm in my own place. I actually care. Living in the parents' house, I didn't care. It wasn't my house, my room was always messy... kind of... Now, though, I make the effort to keep things clean.

'Sides, I'd still have Amanda to answer to if I messed up the kitchen towels... ><

It's all moot, however, because she'll be calling a conference room phone. So I better be here...

I'll be sure to check those movies out. I know that we've had some differences in taste in the past (I'd call it more lack of experience on my part than actual difference in taste... except for horror... and that crapfest Saw wink.png) but these are classics that we're talking about now.

One of my fears of taking any job is the fact that Amanda and I are all settled into our own place now. The crap jobs don't necessarily pay enough for our cheap (for the area) apartment...

I, of course, am constantly guilty of over-complicating things, so I have to keep telling myself that it's not as bad as I think it is (for instance, I'm not dead and all of my loved ones and friends are safe... including you it turns out!).

I realize it sounds ridiculous. But now that I'm expecting my current team to let me go any minute (a lot like my internship), the additional job security would've been nice. And a job's a job, as long as it pays.

At the very least, those positions would've been a buffer for me figure out what the next step is. I dunno, my thought process is all screwy now. Been a weird week.

      Holy shit! You're alive! lol.png

I think part of the problem was that I wasn't particularly interested in either of those positions, so I didn't do a very good job researching them. The expectations, etc. Basically, I shot myself in the foot.

Alright well do what you have to do. Dealing with those people does sound like the shit end of the stick. That's one thing I hate about being tech support. You have to deal with all the idiots.

I'm terrible at buying presents and keeping up with birthdays etc. I feel your pain.

I just realised that you've hit the 51 karma rating... well done! Now tell me true, exactly which mod did you sleep with to get this thing happening? I only ask because I have this friend who also wishes to be part of the cool crowd.

So do you get some great forum where you laugh at the non-51+ Karma rating kiddies?

Bad sex happens. But even bad sex is better than no sex. Look on the bright side - you didn't get puked on.

DUDE BAD SEX IS NOT BETTER THAN NO SEX! This was the type of sex that makes me want to stop having sex, it was that one.

I had an ex spying on me for a while now, I just found out yesterday. So for the last couple of months, I don't know who I can trust on here. I am so upset right now, I don't even have words to describe it.

You're a good man, Charlie Brown... Just keep your psycho rats and monkies to yourself, mmkay?

So, you've transcended beyond the world of mods. It's nice, isn't it? I myself and lived with 0 mods many times and it is highly liberating. smiley0.gif

It figures... The one time in recent memory that I write a journal and you're in the mood to comment, I forget to include my reason for writing the seemingly random journal... ><

Those toys are awesome, if I had millions of dollars to spend on just fun stuff, oh yeah I would be getting 50 of everything. I would be superspy.

Saw you 'splainin' the whole /members/... thing to Frankfurter... I do that exclusively now (and I even put that into TinyURL). However, I've noticed that it doesn't always work... which doesn't make sense. It works once, it should work everytime... Has that happened to you?

    • espithaca

Hey, as long as you're paying for it... You miss once though, and I'll be on you like crust on bread, like sauce on spaghetti, like soup crackers on chowder, like whipped cream on a sundae... damn, I'm freaking [i[hungry....

      What were we talking about?

    • Frankfurter

Well you knew I was serious because I used your name instead of your nickname. Ask ole' Erik Diaz (whom I call "Diaz" {pronounced Die Azz} normally) whom I call "Eric" when I'm serious.

Oh that's right, ole Dingo. But we're good for now...for now.

      Anyway...

Is that whole //members thing for everyone or just those who use that Firefox patch?
