I've been working on a total conversion mod for UT3 recently and I've realized that it is too much for me to do alone. I figured I would ask here to see if any of you are interested in giving me a hand with some of the art. I'm looking for help with both environment and character art. Let me know if you are up to the challenge.

Don't code the HUD in C++ next time. I'm kinda pissed about having to write my own HUD code.

My driving test. I was rear ended. I'm ok and everything, but this was the first time I've ever been in a car accident and I was driving. smiley4.gif

Here's what happened with a quick 3d reenactment. I'm driving and the car 2 in front of me stalls causing the guy in front of my to slam on his breaks and causing me to slam on my breaks. The guy behind me failed to do so and rear ended me. He was then rear ended and this caused him to rear end me again. As me and the guy behind me were pulling over to get out of the road we watched the person who rear ended the guy behind me drive away. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, I got to see a firetruck and a hot firelady, but on the down side I didn't get to test.

Now, for the 5 minute, color coded, reenactment. (I'm the white car by the way).

Autodesk has a live stream from their GDC booth set up. It is pretty informative and awesome.

Last week my family was in DC. It was fun. We left the saturday before last for DC. Took a segway tour the morning after getting there. The Segways were pretty fun. It was freezing and raining, but I didn't really care, I was on a fucking segway. We did all the big tours and those were fun. So! During the last election cycle my sister did a bunch of work on Congressman Harry Mitchell's campaign. He won and so we visited him while in DC. It was a monday night, so they were doing a bullshit vote to give people time to get back from their home states. (They were voting to name 3 post offices). Anyways! We got to go with him to the house and sit in the house gallery during the vote. His office isn't in the capitol building, so we got to take the little subway tram from his office to the capitol. Between votes he hooked us up with some voting cards. The congress people have have id cards (they look kind of like drivers licenses) that they normally use to vote. There is a box that they put the card in to and it gets who they are from the card and then they push the button corresponding to the way they want to vote. If they forget these fancy cards, or they accidentally hit the wrong button they grab on of three voting cards (No, Quorum, or Aye), fill it out, and turn it in. He got us each a set of these cards. They might just be paper, but it is pretty cool to have them. He then took us on a "behind the scenes" tour of the capitol. Stop 1 was the Speaker's balcony. This is where Yoyo Ma and that other guy were sitting during the inauguration. I didn't have my camera with me so I have no pictures of the view but it was incredible. It over looks the mall and it was just beautiful. We didn't do much after that in DC because the day after next we left for NY.

We were only in NY for 2 days. We went to see one of my cousins in a new off Broadway show. The show is called Happiness and is at the Lincoln Center. My cousin is not Matt Wall. Same last name as me, but not related. Happiness is good, go see it if you get a chance. The next day in NY I got to meet new cousins. My mom's family is huge and I've met very little of it. I got to meet an Aunt and Uncle, 2 new cousins, a cousins wife and their daughter. (Yes, I have one cousin in grade school and another 2 who are in their 30's). I've been working with one of my older cousins on a new project since getting home. This is what has been keeping me pretty busy, but I can't go in to detail about it.

For the flight home I bought a large bag (about 2 pounds) of m&ms and attempted to eat the whole bag on the flight home. I failed, but I was able to get through almost half the bag. I have a time lapse video of that attempt and I'll post the link once it finishes uploading to youtube.
      EDIT: DONE!
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYGrjph1djc

I think that's all I wanted to talk about in this first journal. I'll be posting the next one later with info about what has been keeping me busy besides the cousin project. I'll probably also explain why I need to be kept busy. (Also! If you want to take a look at the pictures I took while in DC and at the national aquarium I've posted them on facebook. I'm way to lazy to upload them all again and so if you aren't my facebook BFF yet then send me a friend request there).

(I'm also enjoying watching all of the autodesk presenters at GDC trying and failing to remember that Softimage|XSI is now owned by autodesk and just Softimage. They keep calling it XSI and it makes me laugh).

I've decided to make the time to post journals today. This will be the first of 2 or 3 and is a quick one. Autodesk (the make of the modeling and animation tools used to create art assets for most games) are streaming their presentation booth from GDC. It has some pretty interesting stuff if you are interested in how games are made and what the games of the future will be able to do.

      area.autodesk.com/gdc2009

There is a talk on the animation tools used for prince of Persia coming up next (at 3). I'll post more booth streams if I find them.

    • Engine update

      fritzmonkey

I've named it and made some serious progress. Lots of the ground work is done. It has terrain and I've got the JigLibX physics library working in the engine. Plus a simple camera system and controls. Still have a long way to go, and I think I'm going to take a break for a few days. I've been coding almost non-stop for the past three days and my brain is starting to feel it. smiley4.gif

    • Long time no journal

      fritzmonkey

I haven't been busy or anything, I just haven't had anything interesting to post about. I also realized I never said what I did in regards to my last journal. I went ahead and bought one month, but I don't know if I'll buy another before I leave. I probably will due to the mythic map pack.

From here on out the journal gets serious.

I've been working on a game idea for the past few weeks. Actually, I've been working less on the idea, and more on the math. I'm planning a game where the player plays as a shadow creature thing. As you progress through the game you gain more shadowy abilities. The main game play element is that you can only travel through shadows or else you take damage. This game would be a stealth puzzle game with some combat elements. So if you need to cross an ally you might have to wait for two people to walk by so you can "frogger" across their shadows to the other side.

As you progress through the game you gain some abilities. One will be the ability to climb along shadowed areas of walls and ceilings. The other one will be the ability to control people when in their shadow.

I'm still working on the concept, but I'm trying to decide if I should do this as a UT3 TCM, or as a stand alone title using XNA. I've spent the past week or so learning C#, but writing most of an engine and tool set alone (right now I would be doing this alone, but I'll gladly accept help smiley0.gif ) seems like something of a big challenge, but would probably look pretty kick ass on a resume.

I guess I'm really just looking for thoughts and opinions.
