    • Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer

I got a confession to make. I love the first Fantastic Four movie, much more than any of the Spiderman movies, Xmen movies, and pretty much most superhero movies. Best super team movie and third favorite superhero movie with the original Superman and Batman Begins taking the top spots. Sure it was hokey and implausible and at times dumb but it was good fun. The family dynamic was spot on and perfectly captured the charm of the original 60s run. Despite any and all faults and a weak Doom i love the hell out of it and just gets better with each viewing.

Now its sequel time. Usually in superhero movies the second installment is many times considered superior to the first one mainly because the origin is all out of the way now and all the main characters are already established and have past history now. So is this one a superior sequel? HELL YA! The action is bigger and better, the funny is sharper and less D level sitcom like, the characters are more well rounded, Fantasticar is introduced, Baxter Building looks badass, and we really got a little bit of real hardcore Doom thrown in. Plus that Silver Surfer dude is in the movie, heard he was a fan favorite or something.

The actors are all on top of their game this round. Ioan Gruffudd is even better as Reed and finally comes off as the strong leader of the team. Michael Chiklis is still stunning as the Thing and Chris Evans IS Johnny Storm where in this movie he is in the spotlight more than the others a little bit. I am not a fan of Jessica Alba's acting, she has gotten as far as she has in this industry based on how hot she looks. She was crappy as usual in the first movie but this time is a million times better and seems to understand Sue a whole lot better now. I thought the contacts and new hair color was going to bother me but i never really noticed it and she still looks hot, got to see it on the screen and not in pics.

Julian McMahon shows up once again as the evil archnemesis Dr. Doom. Mainly a glorified small role where we get even less real Doom time but to compensate it is the real DOOM ....for like three minutes. Basically just a taste of whats to come with bits of being in Latveria and actually putting on the famous Doom armor suit. When he does become Doom once again its mainly 'hahahaha i got the board now bitches' then shortly 'oh shit looks like i am dead once again, see ya in the next one!'

Silver Surfer IS spectacular and a show stealer when he is in the movie. Doug Jones who did all the movements was great as usual and Laurence Fishburne turned out to be the perfect voice for him. Didn't sound very much like Morpheus in the end and fit the Surfer surprisingly well.

Worst thing about this movie? In one word, Galactus. Its not him being a frickin cloud, that part was cool and had no problem with having it be like that. But in the end the giant destroyer of worlds was a giant pussy. Just sad that he got his ass handed to him by somebody whose powers he GAVE him to begin with ...........ya fucking right. The movie was meant to showcase the Surfer and Galactus seemed to be just an afterthought. One suggestion: don't have Galactus come at all, Surfer can decide not to help him destroy Earth and end the movie right fucking there. Perfect setup for the next one, Galactus is coming. But oh well

Besides that the movie is ten times better than the first. If you liked the first one you'll love this

    • Guess Who I Saw Get off a Plane?

You all know i live in Alaska where we don't run into or see many, if any celebrities. They come up here from time to time but rarely, its not like a lot of you guys that live in the LA or New York areas that see them everyday or every other day. So it can bring the starstruckness right out of ya to see one here. I before this day have only seen in person Jared off of Subway........i know thats sad. But now at work before cleaning a plane i saw someone get off. It turned out to be an actor i really do like and love most of his movies........

Kurt frickin' Russell. I am not shitting you guys, i just saw him for two seconds get off the plane as i nodded to him with my messed up hair *it was windy and rainy outside* My supervisor wasn't paying attention and Mr. Russell was so unassuming with a hat on and laying low i was just about convinced it was someone that looked a lot like him. That theory was thrown out the window when all the flight attendants on that plane were gossiping about him. That was pretty cool for me since i love all his John Carpenter movies, Captain Ron is a favorite in my family, and just one of my favorite all time actors. Plus the Thing was filmed right here in Juneau for some scenes.....that was like over 25 years ago but thats still cool on its own. Mr. Russell has also been living in Vancouver with his family for a few years so its not that surprising i guess.

But still..........I got a little star struck even if i just saw him for a few seconds.

Its been over a week but i saw Hot Fuzz. It was the day before it was going to leave the theater and only three other people were in the theater with me for it. Great great movie, its better than Shaun of the Dead mainly because zombie movies are so over done where there haven't been many high action buddy cop movie parodies especially ones that all take place in a quiet English town. Over the top violence, intentionally cheesy acting and a unnerving 'love' relationship between the two buddy cops and its all a blast. If i reviewed this right after i saw it i'd add a lot more but hell i was lazy. Don't miss Timothy Dalton, forget Bond this is the role of his career.

And just not any movie. No the new Uwe Boll movie Far Cry where he is prepared to ruin yet another game. Just go to ebay, don't let the german speak throw you off

The lowest bid right now is 3,300 dollars. Not only must you spend top dollar just to get a bit part and go to the set for five days and get to meet Uwe Boll *ya impressive i know* you also got to pay for your hotel and plane ticket. Plus probably pay for a passport and all the other extras. How cheap is all that? If you want to be 'famous' and get into a movie you got to pay your ass off to get on. And that is for a UWE BOLL MOVIE! Surprised he isn't begging people to be in his movies let alone expect to have them pay for the privilege. Whatever rich geek wins the bid, you have proved your geekiness man.

And here is some more interesting video game news guy who plays violent video games takes a bullet for someone. You won't see the press playing this up, but take that you crazy heathens. Take that Jack Thompson!!!!!!!

We all have done it, or at least know exactly what it is. Being able to go online and tear anything and everything to shreds by finding every little flaw with something. Its a regular feature on everybody's favorite thread on this site, everywhere you look there is a pop culture or political subject that has a strong group finding pleasure in ripping it a new one. Even the sacred Comic Book Movie Thread is greatly subject to this. You'll find a good lot of us that spend a lot of our life there just dishing out the hate and thriving on it.

Is it all just too much? Should we all lighten up? Yes and no. It can just point out how much of a life a lot of us need. It can also be the funnest thing ever getting with people you know and just lampooning the shit out of it. Better than most drugs and video games on the market if done with the right people to bounce off of. But it can go a bit too far and turn into just the same constant hate mongering.

But if we just minimize or even praise most things that come out these days it not only becomes boring but it also just furthers a society without any creativity willing to buy any piece of shit. So what do you do then? How can you possibly tell the bad stuff from the good or at least acceptable? Well to me its all in the directing its how i can't stand Xmen 3 but find Spiderman 3 to be an entertaining movie that has been unfairly picked on. X3 didn't give off the comic book feel to me, it just felt like something slapped together for the masses with all the action just popping in there to get all the Bay lovers something to go 'oh HELL FUCKING YA' about. Spiderman 3's action fits the plot and doesn't feel like its there just to be action. Sure their is WAY too much plot and ideas going on in Spidey 3 but it gives off the great feel of a comic book. The whole Spiderman movie series feels like a modern rendition of Spiderman's early days and golden age in the 60s/early 70s.

The big difference is in the sum of its parts. As a whole judge a movie, don't find a few things that are bad and saw its 'the wurst thing eva! Venom is soooo kewl! Where was he? And where was Cyclops in the Xmen movies? *Erok don't kill me smiley8.gif *

And I guess in my own way what i been trying to say is that bitching is an art online. If you go into a thread and see it happening try to read into it a bit more and see if its all just a few geeks having fun or its just some petty kids that can't think for themselves.

What spurned all this on? Just online talk culture in general and The Angry Video Game Nerd. Interesting idea there, its a series of video game and console video 'reviews' done by a guy playing the stereotypical bitching nerd and takes it way over the top and really hits too close to home. Not the best stuff around, he seems to break character in some parts but its good fun. His out of character movie video reviews are surprisingly thoughtful as well. Watch his Spiderman 3 movie review and you'll get a better idea why i felt compelled to write this journal.

      Peace,

    • Spiderman 3

      grunthos2

Yep i finally saw it, just came back from it actually. I wanted to hate it, pick every little thing apart from it. Bitch about things how Gwen wasn't a real love interest and how Venom is hardly in the movie. How Spiderman always has his mask off but still maintains a secret identity no matter what. That in Spiderman's New York a lot of interesting characters look like Bruce Campbell, this one had him doing a Inspector Clouseau impression. How John Jameson isn't in this or mentioned and J. Jonah doesn't treat Peter any differently even though he stole his son's fiance. Even things like how Harry doesn't have a frickin' Goblin mask.

But i didn't care in the end. This movie was fun. Sure it had slow parts, not as bad as Spiderman 2's but slow nonetheless. There isn't any real musical numbers except the Jazz Room stuff and that is so short that its just a nitpick. Peter is a dork and when he thinks he's cool he'll be all nerdy and pathetic about it.

Sandman was done well, you feel something for him a bit. They could of included his family a bit more but they got the point acrossed. They did better pulling the heartstrings with him then they did Doc Ock. Venom was in it just enough to get your fill. I actually liked Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. The character was just a prick whose extremely self centered and delusional. Its fun having a bad guy that you can just sit back and see how pathetic he really is. I'd say the villains in this were done just as well as the previous movie's villains: they take a back seat to the hero but are fleshed out enough to feel something towards.

LOVED Bryce in this. How Ron Howard spawned such a sexy yet innocently cute woman is beyond me, nuff said. But the best performance in the movie? James Franco. He plays so many different degrees of insane. When he gets hit in the head and loses alot of memory he turns back into Harry the good friend but with the likely combination of the hit on the head and the goblin gas comes off as a naive happy kid. I felt more for Harry than anyone else in the movie.

Yep this movie does have a mountain of flaws. But you know what? So do the first two movies as well. So do just about every movie. This wasn't X3 bad, its just a harmless movie. It works well as a third part of a movie series. It ends on a note that ties just about everything up and ends on a melancholy note. You could end the movie series right here or take it into any direction you'd want with it. It just ends on uncertain terms, you don't know the future.

Oh yeah, why is this movie so goddamn expensive? The special effects man. Trust me its a GIGANTIC jump from the last two movies, almost to the point of complete excess.

bottom line: I thought it was a fun movie after i was prepared to tear it to ribbons. It has just as many flaws as the first two movies, some of them the same others that are not. Sam Raimi could walk away from the movies and give the series to anybody that would be up for it since it finishes things that could take the franchise into any possible direction. Don't expect anything but a summer action movie, don't blow things out of proportion. Watch the first two movies again before seeing this you'll notice it all fits together nicely. Uneven trilogy? a bit but so is every trilogy even LOTR.

I am not going to give this movie any star rating since anything i give it will probably be either too highly rated or rated too low. Its a fun movie, not a work of art.

For two big reasons: i spend too much time online and i don't got much to say around here hence the lack of journals recently. Geek, i will try and do that movie but lets push it last minute and arrange things that way.......were all slackers here!

Oh saw some movies and here are two mini reviews i wanted to do long ago but couldn't get any real formed thoughts on them to do a whole journal.

      Silent Hill

I wanted to love this movie i really did. Its not the 'worst video game ever' but its not also the best. I'd say its way better than Resident Evil and of course the Uwe Boll movies but its got nothing on Advent Children. The movie's story is a bit different: instead of a pagan cult its a puritan witch burning christian cult, main character got a sex change apparently with the lead being a woman now, back story behind the town is completely overhauled but looks the same on the surface. If you played the first game which the movie is loosely based on or hell any of the Silent Hill games the differences may bother you, but it works for the most part with people that don't know much about the games it makes the city back story a LOT less confusing and you can come up with a workable theory on what is going on, its still confusing but trust me the games make it boggier. The acting is what i'd call 'cutscene acting', dialogue is delivered in a short toned sort of way with even emotional outbursts seem a bit contained. Don't know if that was a conscious choice making it sound like a video game cutscene but there you go. Greatest thing about this movie? GREAT VISUALS.......and oh ya Sean Bean, he is in everything and we love him for it.

      2.5/5 stars

      Rocky Balboa

After over 16 years, Rocky comes back after for one more round. Very VERY melodramatic and a bit corny, but hell that is what makes a Rocky movie a Rocky movie! Of course Rocky has always been a simple minded street guy with a heart of gold who is overtly sentimental and finds new ways to be an underdog, thats just the charm of the character. This time his wife is dead and he is a retired has-been who runs a restaurant and has an estranged son. He gets in the ring again to do a special match with the current boxing champ who isn't painted to be a over the top bad guy like all the non Apollo opponents, but basically alot like how Rocky was in Rocky 3 dealing with fame. Best part of the movie is the big boxing match which for the first time in both a Rocky movie and boxing movies in general, is made to be as realistic as possible with great results. Fun film that Rocky fans will love and see it as a way better send off than Rocky 5. All others may ridicule it but this fits mostly well in the series

      3.5/5 stars

Next time i may come back to review Spiderman 3 if i ever end up seeing it when its out or i could just review some Ed Wood movies which i been meaning to do.

    • Movies So Far This Year

      grunthos2

Well kiddies its almost time for the summer movie season to start. About the biggest comic movie geek hits so far have been Ghost Rider and 300. Grindhouse disappointed and i can't say i helped since i didn't get time or money to really see that one. Its so much harder to go to the downtown theater let alone set more than three hours for something i am not totally for. Thats why i waited to see 300 when it made it to the theater right next door to me. Sure it got grained up a bit since the other theater treats their reels like shit, but i saw it. Here are the movies i seen so far this year, not as many as i'd like but here ya go:

Ghost Rider: its a decent superhero movie. Don't expect too much and repeat viewings are only worth it to analyze the cool as hell GR effects.

TMNT: A great fun Turtle movie that both longtime adult fans and kids today will like. It doesn't really stick with you but is a great way to get a new Turtle movie franchise started.

300: It was good, but not great. The way PB and others reacted to this movie is how i initially reacted to Sin City. I am just more into Film Noirish type stuff than ancient battlefields. So we picked our favorite Frank Miller style movie.

What i will see no matter what:

Spiderman 3: I got to see this. Even though i think it will suck, its such a event movie and the leading franchise in the superhero movie craze that its a must for all comic geeks. Got to do damage control you know.

      ...........

Actually thats about it. Don't get me wrong i LOVE going to the movies but its so damn expensive nowadays and there are somethings i either don't care to see or i just simply don't want to give some of the hacks my money.

Pirates 3? Meh it is like the Matrix movies but nobody cared the drop in quality of the sequel this time around. Shrek 3? Shrek 2 was the most unfunny animated movie i have ever seen in the theaters. Its so painful being put in a position where i feel like i am supposed to laugh or at least find funny. Transformers? Hell i never really got into them growing up and besides, I got a code against watching Michael Bay movies in the theater if i do at all won't break it for this. Fantastic Four 2? it is so fucking meh to me. Sure they got the Surfer to get our geek butts in the theaters, but i just can't get excited for this stuff.

Only other movie right now i am compelled to go see is the Halloween remake. I may just wait for the DVD since i am not big on Rob Zombie's directing style. Cool as hell ideas but lame execution and i just don't 'get' his stuff. Sorry but that is how i am. But my John Carpenter and Halloween movie love is strong but not that strong.

I haven't been in the loop with new movies as i used to so there is probably a few i forgot or haven't really heard about that will be cool enough to make me see it in the theater. Besides that? So many big name sequels and franchises and yet i just don't care. Hollywood needs to reinvent itself before we get a remake of Citizen Kane starring Justin Timberlake and directed by Joel Schumacher.

But i admit the lineup so far in 08 sounds SO MUCH BETTER. I will spend so much theater time next year for sure.

    • 300

What can i say that hasn't been said already? I can't at all. Finally we have gotten a movie which shows ancient historical battles that seems to come out of the point of view of a 14 year old boy imagining the events excitedly in history class. Tons of sex, violence, sub human and diseased ridden characters, charging rhinos, and effeminate evil God king invaders. The first part of the movie takes a bit to get into, but about halfway the movie really picks up and we get the imagery faster and more intensified against human emotions as 300 of the strongest and most driven warriors ever to have set foot on Earth laugh in the face of death and fight seemingly endless hordes of invaders to fight for their freedom.

Acting is great and all the actors look like their characters out of the comics. Lena Headey is amazingly good as Queen Gorgo, tough as nails woman who matches well with Spartan King Leonidas. Best bit of the whole movie is when she kills a corrupt Spartan politician in the forum and repeats the exact same words he used on her earlier when she let him rape her hoping he'd help Sparta out. Talk about total badass.

I can't even describe some of the things seen in this movie. Most interesting one is a Gollum looking hunchback that betrays the Spartan warriors.

bottom line: Sin City meets Passion of the Christ

I thought the first movie Doom looked better. The green cloak and the mask I felt worked really well. In terms of the metallic body... No preference, really.
