I don't have enough to say to write a whole long shpeel, but I do want to say thank you. Thank you to everyone on this site who was there (and continues to be here) during the shit times in my life, despite how distant I am now from the community. Thank you to all the staff for how much hard work they put into making stuff that makes people happy, despite how unforgiving some people in the community can be. Thank you, Rooster Teeth, for helping bring together so many people - on and off the site. I am so thankful for each and every one of you.

I'm usually not one to ask for help with things because I'm a believer in just sucking it up and carrying on, but I feel like I have a giant hole in my chest. Does anyone have advice or just happy little quotes that could help cheer me up? I know it's been awhile since I've been active here but life has gotten so hectic in the past few months. As always, love you guys.

    • Mudbloods: A Film about Quidditch

      heymoon

Those of you who know me know that I play quidditch for UCLA. This week, a feature-length documentary was released that follows the UCLA quidditch team to World Cup V. There's a good chance that you've seen it around some of the smaller news outlets, or even bigger ones like People magazine, CBS, or Yahoo (and an article on Buzzfeed, though it's slightly less glamorous).

      10308394_667965429925371_421046591764339

So for all of you who ask the question "What the hell even is quidditch?!", I recommend you give it a watch. It's a great story, it features some really amazing people, and it explains quidditch perfectly - not just the rules, but also what this sport is all about.

It's available on iTunes to rent or to buy, on DVD, and available from their website (http://www.mudbloodsmovie.com/). You get a discount if you're a student!

    • RTX 2014 in Review (pt. 2)

      (cntd.)

Fast forward to 6:45pm, four and a half hours after I had initially lined up. And we get the news that the line is getting cut off and the rest of us had to go home. Because the casting company didn't bother to tell guardians they were only accepting a certain number of auditions until freaking 6:45, they had capped the line at essentially twice the amount that the agency was willing to take. So me and 100+ other people essentially wasted our entire afternoons (and the last chance we would have had to explore RTX) sitting in this fucking room waiting for an audition we would never get the chance to actually have.

Moral of the story: Fuck that casting company.

From what I experienced this weekend, it is safe to say that RTX should NOT be allowed to grow at the rate it is. Just because the tickets sell at such a crazy amount, doesn't mean they should. RTX is still very, very young, and cannot be treated like PAX or SDCC until they can successfully diversify what the people come to the convention for. As of right now, people come to RTX to meet Rooster Teeth and essentially nothing else. The attendance to non-RT panels was abysmal at best (save the Game Grumps one) which really shows how true this is.

Sure, selling less tickets wouldn't provide as much of a profit, but I really do think that the convention would benefit as a whole in the long run by scaling it back down, fixing the problems it has, then letting it grow. The problem is that last year's lines were crazy, which is obviously to be expected of any convention, but nothing was changed between the years to make them more manageable. It seems like a lot of the major issues from last year were not addressed and that is just not okay.

Another thing that really bothered me is the disconnect that seems to be happening between the staff and the community. While RTX is obviously centered around being a gathering of the community, it seems to be becoming more of an ego boost for the staff members.

What really struck me as bizarre was that certain staff members who basically hid from fans all weekend were praised, while people like Jack and Caleb were put down, even though Caleb goes out of his way to organize events like Ultimate Frisbee (which was amazing by the way, albeit a bit wet) and Jack the K1 Speed charity event. Jack was always out on the floor and just being an all around joy to be around and watch on stage that I'm baffled by how much negativity is thrown his way by the community. (seriously, @jack, you rock.)

Though a lot of what I have to say is criticism, I have so much respect and appreciation for those who put in all the work to make this event happen. I can't even imagine the planning and ridiculous amount of coordination involved as well as the added aspect of dealing with thousands of people who all have needs that have to be addressed. My respect for Gus and Barbara for heading this project is immense. To the guardians as well, all of your hard work this weekend is so so SO appreciated as well. The convention would not run as smoothly as it does without all of you. You are all amazing people for sacrificing your con experience to make everyone else's incredible.

As for the non-convention stuff, I've gotta say that meeting all you lovely people from the site in real life was such a great experience. Thank you for being welcoming to me even though I've never really talked to many of you at length and just for being so goddamn rad. @ammo303 @Nandice @stfusparks @Curryshoe @Morokea @fedemere @boosher @Zack @Josho @ShadowSham and the others I'm not sure of their usernames. smiley12.gif

Overall, I do have very mixed feelings about this year. It has its ups and downs, but it seemed like it was disproportionately downs. Maybe it just paled in comparison to RTX 2013, which was absolutely incredible, who knows. But I kinda sorta impulse bought a VIP badge from the Indiegogo for next year so... guess I'll see you all in 2015.

Don't hate me, but this isn't going to be the "WOW OMG IT WAS SO AMAZING LOLOL" type of post that I see floating around in abundance. I left RTX with a pretty bitter taste in my mouth.

Friday was probably the best of all three days. Both the Live Action and RTAA panels were very interesting, informative, and funny. The trailers for Day 5 and another new show that will be premiering soon were really cool and I'm excited to see what comes out of those. However, the convention center was very, very cramped. It was obvious from extremely early on how oversold the event was for the space provided.

The show floor was very oddly spaced as well, with minimal seating available for the main stage which was very popular, especially during Achievement Hunter events, while there was loads of space allotted to booths with very little traffic along with TONS of empty space. While there were some cool things on the floor, most of it was pretty lackluster (though I realize I am biased because I am not a gamer so I do not understand the gaming industry much outside of what RT has taught me).

The evening events being cancelled because of a bomb threat was a bummer, but I understand that is out of the hands of literally everyone running the convention.

Day 2 was alright. I got the the AH panel around 8:30 and secured myself a space in the back, which was expected for how ridiculously fast these fill up. Thankfully the chanting of AH memes before the panel was minimal, but MAN did it get bad once the panel started. The abundance of shout outs, gifts, and non-questions (namely people going up to the mic to spew a few AH memes to elicit a laugh) made this panel literally dreadful to sit through.

What made things even worse is the people behind those on the mic. If you were one of those assholes doing GTA: Online taunts behind them, or making funny faces, or doing anything to draw attention away from the question asker to yourself: fuck you. ESPECIALLY if you were that dude who was physically assaulting the poor kid in front of you. This is essentially their one shot at getting to talk to a group of people they admire, and who are you to take that away and make someone who is probably already nervous even more so because you can't contain your urge to attention whore? It was frustrating watching some poor kid struggle to sputter out a legitimate question because of these twats.

What amazes me the most, however, is that this guy was not punished in any way. If it were a woman at the mic, you know that dude would have been kicked out immediately. Why did the guardian do nothing at all?

Aside from that, the other events I attended were solid. Prop hunt was cut very short because of technical problems but it happens and the tech guys were obviously working hard to solve the issue. The Trails Fusion DLC was super cool to see as well and the stage wasn't too swamped so it felt a bit more intimate (oh la la), which was nice.

The Immersion panel was great for a few reasons. One of them being a very brief Q&A section, admittedly. It was great that Brandon came with questions already prepared that sparked legitimate discussion and prompted some cool stories. The behind-the-scenes footage was funny and getting to see some of the concepts that had to be scratched was interesting and I think was the sort of thing a lot of people wanted out of the panel. I particularly enjoyed the homage to the Pacman episode, especially the subtle alteration Gus made to his fat suit.

This year at RTX I made no effort to meet cast & crew, opting to ask for a picture if I saw the opportunity but not wait in line for signings or anything. But from what I saw, if I had waited in line for a signing it would not have been fruitful anyway. The whole "pick people from a crowd at random to get to go to a signing" method was frustrating even for ME, the absolute bystander during the whole process. The horror stories I've heard about guardians telling people to come back in 20 minutes and then returning to a capped line is ridiculous and favor those who game the system and do not listen to the authority figures of the convention.

Sunday (today) was a mess. The RT Recap panel was wonderful and a joy to be at. The relative smallness of the panel compared to the others is likely the reason, but still. Plus I got to witness a couple get engaged in what is likely the cutest way humanly possible.

But from there, it all went downhill. The line for IB was capped two whole hours before the beginning of the panel (or so I thought), but people were still able to make it in after that just by pleading to guardians. In lieu of this panel I went and saw Editing Rooster Teeth which was informative and quite lovely.

If you didn't think I was ranting before, then I'm definitely going to start ranting now. Disclaimer: NONE of the following frustration is directed at anyone affiliated with RT, being guardians and staff members.

I went to line up for the Lazer Team casting call, and to my delight they were still letting people line up. I think I was in line for 15 minutes when they capped the line, so I considered myself very lucky. This was the thing I was really looking forward to; a chance to get to work on an RT production, which is something I've wanted to do for a while now. I knew my chances were slim, but obviously some chance is better than none.

I got in line at 2:15 (ish). Sat and waited for the actual audition to start, and the line was moving at a snail's pace. No worries, they said they would go over time if needed.

(continued in my next journal because I have a lot more to write than what the site will let me)

Hey friend a few things i wanted to share with you. 1. I stuck your famous clip from RTX in the new recap (everyone wants to know who the blonde is!...to which i reply "Oh her, that's my friend Lauren" (flips collar) and 2. Me and most the Annex crew just spent a good time laughing at your gif of the business folk stock footage...i decided i wouldve added the text "That moment when you remembered to pee in the office coffee pot"

I feel honored that my name is accompanied by a JJ collar flip. Is that how I know I've made it?! And my take on it has always been that the 4 in the back are celebrating a really great orgy they just had (because you always gotta high five after) and the guy in the front was secretly watching through the blinds the whole time. But yours is a bit more evil. I like it. >:)
