Google uses it for marketing, but they don't share it with third parties the way Facebook does. They use your search history and emails and stuff to automatically feed you personalized ads, but they do it in-house and it's an automated process. Facebook actually gives your information to advertisers. And app developers. And other websites.

Google makes money off your personal information by guessing which ads you're likely to click on, and charging advertisers every time you click them. Facebook makes money off your personal information by selling it.

It's my understanding that with Google, the info never leaves Google unless you specifically allow them to communicate with another site, like linking a Twitter account or using your Google account to sign in. And it's never the default, they always ask. Whereas with Facebook, in order to say, play Farmville, you MUST give the farmville people access to your email address, phone number, contact list, photos, videos, messages, and posts. Facebook gives its app developers and advertisers access to information you've put in, regardless of your privacy settings.

edit: tl;dr: The bottom line is that to me, there's a huge difference between the information I give a company being used by that company to determine what ads they show me as I use their product, and the information I give a company being distributed among as many of their affiliates as possible.

      You're welcome. smiley1.gif

You're on here all the time and you're one of my earliest friends. You deserve it, especially for wanting to be in a Neil Diamond cover band.

I always felt half the fun of having a natural inclination toward being odd is not giving people any indication until it's already too late.

So, I've managed to meet up with a lot of the people I missed at Toronto this year through other events.

But not everyone. Hope you're doing well!
