      Hey All,
It's been a while since you've heard anything from this part of space. And, unfortunately, this is probably going to be the last you hear. In this space, at least.
I've decided that it's time to finally lay this Roosterteeth account to rest. I've been inactive for the past six months, and something tells me that pattern isn't going to change much in the future. Rather than becoming The Least Interesting Man in the World I thought I would quit while I'm behind and move on to greener pastures.
This is a fun community with a lot of great people, but I'm shifting my energies (who am I kidding, I've already shifted them) to other things.
If you want to stay in touch, find me on Facebook (PM me if I'm difficult to find there) or at my brand-new blog.
Thanks for all the good times.

    • The Detective Story

So, I'm currently in the midst of an attempt at writing a novel. From the title of the journal you can guess some of the content. I've been working on this one in my spare time since about this time last year, and I've been making slow progress, since it's not my first priority. Right now I have 15,000 words typed and I'm aiming for a completed length of about 75k.
Part of the reason it's been such slow going is that I've been writing it out longhand and then copying it into the computer. I've chosen to do this for three reasons. The first is that I would like to have a written manuscript for posterity and as a final layer of failsafe in case something apocalyptic happens to my files. The second reason is that it's a lot easier to pull out a notebook and start writing anywhere than it is to pull out a computer. The third is that I like to have a chance to give it a second glance as I type it in, and fix any glaring problems on the fly. So right now I have three chapters penned, but only two of those are in digital form. I've been trying to keep myself to a schedule of deadlines of sorts, but with this not being my main job - or even my secondary job - but instead being a hobby, I've fallen behind and missing deadlines. Arg.
Right now I'm just looking to get through my Winter term finals, and then I've promised myself to dedicate most of Spring Break to the Detective Story. We shall see how that goes. I'm hoping that after this year - meaning, after I get my Master's - things will be somewhat less intense, and I'll be able to wrap it up and move on to the wondrous process of editing the thing and searching for an entry into the world of publishing. It should be an interesting and wild ride.

Working on multiple term papers is not the best time to have one's desktop die on them. Thank God I've got the laptop, but seriously. And, rather than work on said papers, I whine about it on RvB. Go me.

So being sick apparently makes one's subconscious just come to life at night. The other night, when I was running a *bit* of a fever, these are the visions that danced through my head:

The World's Fair was being started up again (I learned afterward, in the waking world, that the World's Fair is still going on strong, although rebranded as Universal Expos now). It was going to be held in a couple of weeks, and in Las Vegas. I wanted to get in on this ticket raffle program to try and go, but my dad (who works in the casino industry) told me that Vegas was overrated, expo or no.

In the next dream there was a bunch of merchandise being sold under the fuck yeah, Seaking brand. I decided to get my friend, a big internet geek, a set of Seaking pajamas.

The third, and final, had me in London, walking around, trying to find my phone which I had somehow lost there. And, yes, I flew out to England to get my phone.

They were short, but somewhat odd, and memorable. Until next time!

    • What I've been up to for the last...year

      janus_prime

It's really been that long, huh? Dang.

So, first things first, I graduated from college. Something I honestly hadn't expected :P I came out Cum Laude, despite my best efforts to party (and flunk) my way out. In the midst of that I applied and interviewed for med school, and then decided it wasn't the place for me. Luckily, OHSU decided that it wasn't the place for me, either, so I didn't have to deal with an acceptance letter from a place I didn't want to attend. So considerate of them. Also during the last of my time at college, I started an online radio show with my friends. On it, we perform dramatic readings of the most terrible fan fiction to grace the Internet with its presence. Seriously.

Left at loose ends I helped chaperone my younger sister's choir tour to England and France. Hit London, Bath, and Paris on that trek. Excellent times there. In my intervening time I got a part-time gig as a tutor and tried to figure out what to do with my future.

I was not left waiting long for a flash of insight. I (quite by chance) discovered a Masters'-level program in teaching at a nearby university. I applied to start the one-year program in January, interviewed, and was accepted. Right now I'm in my third week and have been working in a field placement at my old high school. That part isn't weird at all. Especially since my mentor teacher is one of my former high school teachers. Bizarre.

Anyway, that's a lightspeed summary of everything of interest from the last year. I'm going to try to post with greater frequency, because boiling all that down was painful.

Well, it seems that Arthur C. Clarke is dead. It saddens me to see so many of the worldbuilders who shaped my youth are going, but then again I look back and see that Clarke hadn't produced something solo for a number of years. It was (to me; I know he'd still been doing a prolific amount of collaborations) as if he had been gone for years and his actual passing was just a confirmation of the fact. Regardless, he was a great, and his loss leaves a gaping void not just in SF, but in culture and science as well.

So... I picked up Brawl tonight. It's quite good. There's a much greater emphasis on customization, letting you choose everything from the frequency of any given piece of background music on a particular stage to mixing and matching the "special" Brawls.

One feature that I think I'll have a great deal of fun with is the Stage Builder. Already I've built one, entitled "Under Fire" and inspired by the lyrics used in the death-metal-esque introduction to the Metroid stage's theme. Seriously. This guy just growls, "SAMUS IS UNDER FIRE! SHE'S SENT AN EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE. JOIN IN THE FIGHT!" It's so bad that it's almost awesome.

Anyway, off to sleep, then work, then more Brawl!

    • Movie Quotes!

      janus_prime

All right, this one's pretty simple. I have a list of some movie quotes here (16, to be precise) and your task is to tell me the movie that goes with each quote. Good luck!

      1. That can't be good for the table.
      2. No matter where you go, there you are.
      3. "Do you trust me?" "What?" "Do you trust me?"
      4. Iron Maiden? EXCELLENT!
      5. That's what I said. Alameda.
      6. We give the audience a choice. We say, you can enjoy 'a toothpaste commercial', or do you wanna hear folk music?
      7. "What single-celled organism did *you* evolve from?" "Tyrannosaurus Rex, the lizard king, thank you very much."
      8. To hell with this... I'm gonna live!
      9. And as we all know, "to blathe" means "to bluff".
      10. "I love you." "I know."
      11. "Physician, heal thyself." "Is that all you gotta say? Well, what about my performance?" "I'm not a drama critic."
      12. I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
      13. Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
      14. Sweet as Shirley Temple dipped in pudding!
      15. You owe me a new acorn.
      16. Hold on to your butts.

...but not cast. Such is life.

The entire audition process was fun, given that it was a play about a bunch of rowdy fans at a baseball game. As such, we kept up the spirit by being rather rowdy offstage as well. One of the scenes was cut off abruptly in the middle of a line, leaving one of the characters saying, "It's." One of the times that happened I yelled out "OVER!" in my best approximation of a Teen Girl Squad voice. This started a trend that spiraled out of control, especially since one of the characters is simply called "Cheerleader".

I'm overall quite pleased with the cast that's been assembled, and I will hopefully be doing crew, so I'll still be involved in the process and still get to work with a bunch of talented and crazy people. Oh, how I love theatre.

Ha! You will be on my turf! A word of warning, though: the weather up here has decided to completely ignore what season we are in currently, so expect everything from 80 degree sunshininess to 30 degrees and snowing. Yes. We had those (and pretty much everything in between) over the course of a week.

Yes! Well, actually it was a turn for the better. It was supposed to be hella rainy and crappy weather, and though it was colder than it is here (compare 60 in Portland to 95 here in Merced!!), it was a lot more pleasant than what we were expecting.

Hah, the bathroom situation actually isn't as bad as most people think it is. Funny enough we lucked out that none of us are the typical girls that spend like 3 hours getting ready in the mornings and then 5 hours before going out at night. Plus, we've gotten other mirrors in our rooms so that helps as well.
