    • So Say we all

I figured, since there was a time when I'd screencap and post the # of survivors as my profile image as each episode of "Battlestar Galactica" aired that I'd post my column about the series finale.

"So Say We All: 'Galactica' Flies One Final Mission"

There are few shows on television that promise something in the outset of its pilot episode and deliver that promise in the final minutes of its run on television. "Battlestar Galactica," the remake of the three-decades-ago series aired its last hours of television last week.

The four season series, covers humanity nearing extinction, after its 12 home worlds are nuked and become uninhabitable. A fleet of 50 thousand people move out into the darkness of space, in a search for some planet called "Earth."

Of course, it turns out the enemy is not only a visible threat-the Cylons, a race of machines built by humans that turned on them. They evolved into a race that looked exactly like humans do. The threat becomes invisible.

The show's space battles were enough of a reason to tune in week-to-week, but viewers would be lucky to see one in an episode, as they didn't come often. The series' second pilot "33" is the most action-packed of the series. In it, every 33 minutes the Cylons "jump" into the same section of space that only Battlestar in the ragtag fleet is in.

Despite the series never returning to that peak of action, the show still functioned as a great character, political and religion fueled drama. You have father and son pulled apart by tragedy and brought back together through another near tragedy. Other times you have power grabs between two dueling political entities. Then there's the Cylon God versus the 12 Gods the humans worship. All of these pieces work to make a complicated and intriguing story that left me anticipating future episodes.

The Galactica's father, Old Man, Admiral Bill Adama (Edward James Olmos) is the moral and militaristic compass for the entire fleet. Despite that, he's not likely to do things without those closest to him; at times the ship's Executive Officer Col. Saul Tigh (Michael Hogan), at others President of the 12 Colonies Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnel).

The series' acting is quite the anomaly for cable networking and especially for the Sci Fi network. Olmos' performances in films and television have always left me wondering if he tries to be that good, or if he's just naturally an amazing actor. Other performances are not to be missed either.

It's very hard to say goodbye, for a few reasons. The first is that we'll be seeing it again-in two forms. One is a direct descendent of the series, a television movie called "The Plan" which offers another viewpoint of the show, telling the story from the Cylons' perspective. Another is a prequel, about a city that meets its destruction in the original series, called "Caprica." Saying goodbye just isn't fitting.

Plus, "Battlestar Galactica" is full of unanswered mysteries. For the first two seasons the show opened with the prologue "The Cylons were created by Man… and they have a Plan." We never find out exactly what that "plan" was, but it's safe to assume the forthcoming TV movie will delve into that subject. I just wish it were resolved over the course of the series. Despite not having the mysteries resolved, the finale was conclusion worthy of the entirety of the series. A sentiment that would not be shared with a show like "Lost," a show that needs its questions answered. Seriously. If I don't know what the hell that four-toed statue is by the conclusion of "Lost," I will go insane.

As with all series finales, it's tough to see characters you know pass into an ambiguous future. If there's one thing the "Sopranos" taught us, it was just that.

Finally, the series will be missed because a show, let alone a science fiction show, as good as "Battlestar Galactica" doesn't come around too often. It was a show that was consistent in terms of quality, the weakest part of the show's run was the end of season three to the beginning of season four, but the writers were able to redeem themselves in the show's final episodes.

Despite this, we must commit the show's ashes to the depths of deep space, and revere a great show at the end of its life. In the words of the show's characters, "So Say We All."

I'm headed out west this week. All the way to San Diego. I'm leaving late, late tomorrow night (try 3:30 Thursday morning). If only it was for the one San Diego thing I really want to go to (yeah. That thing.), but instead I'm going to be at a journalism conference.

      That's pretty cool, too. Yeah.

I don't really watch sports. I've not had a Fox Sports network until 2 months ago. And they don't show Houston Astro's games, but they do show Star's games (though not in HD all the time so I don't usually watch them). I do watch NASCAR when it's on Fox, so that's over the air. I also have the MLB Extra Innings app on my iPhone so I can stay up on the league.

I only watch the Superbowl, and the UT vs A&M game. 8 years of football kind of bored me out of the game.

I read all of my tech news, but I'm with you on Tekzilla focusing more on Tech News. They have SYSTM for hacking and modding, and mucking with stuff. Diggnation is sort of a news show, but I don't like Kevin Rose on camera. And when he's drunk it's even worse. It also brings out the worst in Alex A.

I've played around a bit with Boxee. I'm dual booting Ubuntu and Vista on my tower so I get the best of the Boxee service and Windows Media Center. There is a plugin a guy is working on for WMC that uses Hulu, and will hopefully allow for streaming to an extender, I don't really want to buy a long VGA or DVI-to-HDMI cable to run to my TV. I'm all about the couch.

I somehow knew you'd be the only person to reply to my post. smiley0.gif

I'm pretty sure "Blink" is the best episode of Who. I'm also pretty sure showing that episode to anyone outside of the Whovian society would get them interested in the show. I'm going to give Catherine Tate more time to grow on me. I know Who is for the younger folks, but I think they are bringing in too much from "The Sarah Jane Adventures" which was pure kid TV (though I enjoyed it).

I think you'll like Torchwood. Give it more than the first 3 episodes, it takes a bit before it hits its stride. Then get into season 2, it's awesome.

After reading reviews on Amazon, and seeing pictures of how they packaged the HD BSG I went ahead with the normal DVDs. I prefer the slim jewel cases more to fold out cardboard with glued on plastic nubbins, especially sense HD DVDs scratch easier.

A BluRay Firefly would be interesting. I'd get it if it was $30, but knowing Sony/Fox it's be $60-70. The Stargates are also rumored to come out in BluRay. Atlantis would look good in HD, but the first 6 years of SG1 wouldn't look so hot. But they look just fine upconverted.

    • Gorbash

I missed the stream, wouldn't have done me anygood anyway. My net connection is crap.

I've hit near BSG overload. Watched the first 3 seasons the last 4 days in order to refresh myself for tonight. Some of them with the commentary track, especially the last two (Crossroads part 1 & 2). I really hope RDM does them again.

I don't have Razor on DVD. I'd thought they would have put it out on HD DVD, but then the format war ended, and I'd already spent too much money. It was more of a one-shot anyway. A phenomenal one-shot, but not really part of the main story.

I do have an antenna, though I can't rely on it to get a good signal. I'm about 80 miles from Houston which are what OTA channels I get, I can get NBC, CBS, Fox and CW fine, though on heavy windy days or stormy the signal drops. ABC hardly ever comes in, and when it does, the stuttering is unbearable. I'm basically already getting the locals for free via the Dish DVR Advantage program, which is the first contact extension thing I talked about. And with getting the locals through Dish, I'll be able to use the two tuners on the Dish to record those programs in HD, thus reducing the amount of stuff I have to get off of bit torrent.

Yeah, It's the only thing I can up with annoying about Apple. I don't use it because the rest of the world doesn't run on Apple.

    • Gorbash

Dish has got a great HD DVR, sometimes the programming on their "HD" channels is crap, and the Voom channels are starting to get pretty shitty. But there are gems like Firefly, BSG, Jericho, Stargate Atlantis, and an array of movies that make the $20 bucks a month worth it.

It's funny that they consider a thumbnail size video High Quality. Thank goodness for the torrent network.

I've looked at that. I'm familiar with the Palm platform, which is why I didn't go with a Windows Mobile device. Plus those were really expensive on eBay, and $100 was about my budget for the phone.

Opera Mini works great, it's just not FF. :D

ABC is the one OTA HD channel I have the most problems with. The CW is flaky in bad weather. NBC and CBS stutters every now and then. Fox is the only strong channel all the time, too bad the only good show they have is Family Guy (and hopefully The Sarah Connor Chronicles when it starts and airs for 3 episodes.....).

I can get better reception if I point the antenna in the right direction, right now it is pointing South instead of East, so I'm lucky to get anything resembling a TV signal.

And until the Austin locals get off their ass and start pumping out an HD signal to Dish Network I'm at the mercy of the weather gods.

I will be getting it. Is it like what they did with 300?

    • Gorbash

I've never come across HD extras. Every HD DVD, even 300, had SD extras. It's the major disappointment I have with HD DVDs.
