    • Effects on children in large families

I know that this isn't as much of a Philosophy or Theology topic, but I couldn't figure out a more appropriate place to post it and I figured there's smart people here who could logically discuss it.

I was reading one of the blogs I read daily and they had posted an image of a tabloid stating Angelina Jolie is going to have twins again:

      STARcoveragain120908.jpg

I hope I didn't lose you with the tabloid reference but here is the point I'm trying to get at -

Angelina Jolie has 6 children (two of which that haven't even reached the age of 1) and are supposedly already looking to add to their family again, and has said that she wants to have as many as 14 children.

When I was in college I took a sociology class that focused on family dynamics, and we discussed the effects of large families on individual children. Some studies focused on the belief that a large number of siblings negatively affects a child's personal and educational achievements due to the way each parent's attention and interaction is diluted between the large number of children.

It basically said that because of the size of the family, each sibling doesn't get a sufficient amount of per child parental time and this can result in a more childlike intellectual level. They found that children from smaller families were more likely to have been read to by their parents earlier in life and were more likely to engage themselves in activities of intellectual or cultural achievement. They also were said to have better social skills because children in larger families are less likely to possess an urgency to associate or play outside of the family.

Though they also factor in socioeconomic issues and how having more children limits resources, but research has concluded that children in large families have poorer verbal skills and receive less education than those with less siblings. Those with more money obviously have the option of hired help for their children in addition to spending time with them, but with so many children I sometimes think it can be comparable to children who are raised by their nannies because they can't possibly have enough time to devote equal and sufficient attention to each of them.

Not that I don't think adopting a child from poverty is not a noble thing, but when I see cases like this and The Duggars who have 17 children, I often think back on this and wonder how they make sufficient time for all of them. And of course there are people from large families who might disagree and say that larger families are better, so I'm just curious about everyone's thoughts.

"Please share your memories of John here at this website," Ms. Ono says to Boing Boing readers, and, "WAR IS OVER! IF YOU WANT IT. You can download the poster here. Print it out, and display it in your window, school, workplace, car & elsewhere over the holiday season."

yoko ono released the above picture to boing boing, which was taken just a couple of weeks before he passed. there's a video worth watching if you click the link.

Oh God: A one-year-old girl in Saudi Arabia is pregnant. As in, there is a fetus in her uterus. Apparently it's a strange case of absorbed sibling, in which a fetus absorbs its twin while in the womb. In this case, it seems, the twin grew inside her sister, who was then born with her sibling's fetus in her uterus.

this hand turkey is supposedly from future white house chief of staff rahm emanuel. it's kind of blowing my mind a little bit. that turkey is wearing sunglasses. obama once said that when rahm emanuel lost his middle finger it rendered him practically mute.

i hope everyone is as ridiculously full and sleepy as i am.

so the other day i was thinking about all the things i miss about england...number one being my friends, number two being indian takeaway, and number three being ribena.

i was thinking about how i wanted to see if i could possibly find ribena in austin because i love black currant juice and couldn't find anything like it here. then i kind of forgot about it and moved on.

but then i got home to find a package that was sent by royal mail from my bff milo in london, and guess what was inside!

      3061706733_c4b074ff86.jpg

it was like she read my mind! except there are only a couple left and i have to keep myself from drinking them all at once.

GAV! you should fill your suitcase with this stuff when you come back. i have the squash also but it's just not the same. sigh.
