So I joined this site over 5 years ago, and maybe in the last two years my activity trailed off. Today I was browsing through everybody's profiles and seeing how my internet buddies are all grown up.

I sort of felt a twinge of nostalgia and felt all grown up too until I realised that I'm still more or less in the same damn place. I'm still studying at university, I'm still unsure about my future, I'm still sleeping in the same room of the same house, I still struggle to make any money, I still have a bad habit of procrastinating and I still spend way too much time playing video games trying to increase my gamerscore.

While I should probably be worried my opposition to change, I find all this strangely comforting.

      Never gonna get old.

    • More controller obsession

Finally done with my uni and graduating next month, and still haven't thrown off the guilt of staying up too long or going out on the razz, despite having no dissertation to get on with any more.

Being at such a loss of what to do, I've been doing more controller stuff, and boring you all with pictures of it. Although the finish of my red stripe controller has suffered because it was too cold when I painted it, I'm still in the process of tarting it up a bit more. Right now, bits have been swapped for greyscale buttons and a chrome "home" button.

      P5200278.jpg

Then, thanks to some stencils from Hamstar, I painted a Batman themed controller for my boyfriend's birthday. I'm getting less overspray and smudges - I dare say I might be getting a little better at this.

      baman.jpg

Finally (promise!) I paid way too much for an ODST controller I always wanted off eBay. After fixing it because the guy had obviously thrown it across the room in rage a couple of times, I jazzed it up a bit with orange bits and some bullet buttons that I've seen everywhere. The bullets are definitely form before function - you wouldn't want to enter tournaments with them and I wouldn't buy them again. I would replace them with moody greyscale buttons if it wasn't for my Scottish meanness. smiley6.gif

      P5200280.jpg

A slightly ambitious RvB:UK controller is next, but the weather has turned miserable and may have to wait a bit. Hey-ho, still have a few months before it comes around.

Now I'm off to catch up on journals. I notice a lot of people are getting excited about RvBTO - I should really get a move on if I hope to be there this year. smiley7.gif

I've recently treated myself to one of those gimmicky new Xbox controllers. Just because I had to have one.

      P4060160.jpg

No sooner had I opened it that I decided I didn't really like the greyscale ABXY buttons. So in a flash it was in pieces to swap them around.

      P4060161.jpg

So now what I've basically done is take a brand new special edition and make it less special while voiding the warranty. But I like it all the same.

      P4060166.jpg

A simple mod for now but I've got more planned once the painting friendly weather arrives and I've got a bit more spare time. I blame Hamstar for getting me into it. This has to be going too far, especially since I mostly play Xbox games by myself and only need the one controller.

Just received this totally legit e-mail from who I must only assume is Blizzard:

      Hello

Congratulations! Your world of Warcraft account to receive compensation. This is Blizzard Entertainment's apology

We acknowledge a mistake, for you to lose the World of Warcraft account in order to recover our losses

We will give you 50000 gold coins free of charge and rare mounts (Dark Phoenix), I hope you can restart the game

Login here to authentication (link removed smiley8.gif ), 48 hours you will receive compensation

Description: test account and permanently disabled can not compensation

This would be fantastic if I actually had a World of Warcraft account, although I apparently lost it in order to recover their losses so I'll just enter my PayPal details instead. Can't wait for my rare mounts, whatever those are! :3

Imagine how bored I was when I decided to do a drop test on my cat. You know how they always land on their feet? I wanted to see if mine could be taken by surprise, so I was holding her so she was in my arms on her back, and I suddenly dropped her.

Instead of doing what I expected and flipping with her claws away from me, she flipped the other way and dug right in.

Result: ruined my favourite (and only) maroon t-shirt that you can't buy any more.

      P2020127.jpg

Other injuries include a damaged left love handle:

      P2020129.jpg

But frankly, nothing compares to the pain felt knowing that when I put on a red t-shirt and think it's way too bright, I don't have a darker red alternative. smiley2.gif

So something that I've always wanted to try my hand at is custom painting. More specifically game controllers - which isn't the best start what with the high probability of paint rubbing off all over my hands.

Nevertheless, I had a crack at it. Getting the basics down from Youtube videos, I asked a very generous and immensely helpful Hamstar for pro tips while giving me the impression that I've done it all by myself.

Last month I started off simple and my first attempt was said to be a present for RinoaTakako, but really it was just a trial to see how things went and learn from mistakes. Shhh!

      25qgoxk.jpg

A little messy in places, but I don't think it turned her hands blue, so I moved onto my own one. Still a very simple design, but one I've had stuck in my mind every since playing Mirror's Edge.

      2vx36td.jpg

And maybe for sending a little extra cash his way when I bought off nerdfitti.com (but most likely because he's awesome), Hamstar included some paint masks that let me add that extra personalisation.

      14o17yx.jpg

I've caught the bug and can't wait to move onto more complicated stuff, but with the weather here going bad I'll have to wait until it either gets warmer or when I get a heated garage. smiley5.gif

Oh, did I mention nerdfitti.com? I might as well since I'm already praising Hamstar every which way. Got this one which lets me get roll my eyes at people who ask me if I liked Donnie Darko. Also came in a rather snazzy envelope.

Hey, so I've noticed - I've been a sponsor for 4 years today, and only paid $10 for it all.

      6jks1v.png

Not that I'm complaining - it let me download the newer series' in high quality and watch them back to back. Halfway through Recre--...Recons--...the newest series. I think I may actually be getting back into RvB, even though I don't really know what's going on half the time. Now there's even more incentive to get to the next RvBTO. smiley0.gif

So yeah, how have you all been?

I was sort of against Kurt because of how stereotypical he was, and how his character sometimes seems to be fuelled by the homophobia the show claims to mock, but I admit I do love Kurt and Blaine together.

Yeah, I was bothered by his sterotypical fitting, but I think Blaine plays a nice opposite to the convention. smiley1.gif

      It's from the curing.

When the base coat has too much moisture in it and then is sealed it will expand the surface kind of like a balloon.

The moisture escapes the clear and the ballooned up shape remains, however the resin in it helps it to retain its shape.

over time as the moisture evacuates eventually the resin cannot hold the structure its built and falls, which means that it cant cover the same span it could before and it makes voids/cracks.

Paints cure for a long time, depending on type, and time of year painted.

It's one of the reasons I don't paint in the cold, it's bad.

It's also one of the reasons I'll freeze paint to get the effect of cracking (if you know that paints sweet spot).

There are tons of ways to prevent this, the best/easiest is time.

when you lay your base down after you cannot see the base layer, let it sit for a few days.

How long depends on the type of paint, composition etc.

But there is a cheat, use your nose.

You'll smell paint strong as it cures, and that odor goes down significantly over time.

2-3 days is a pretty safe bet.

You can reduce the time by using an oven so long as you don't go over the pliable temps for your materials, or you can use a hair dryer or heat gun but that can cause boils if you're not careful.

I drove around the city trying to find where I could mail the fastest from, I spoke with Post Masters, and then found out that if I drive to the airport, there is is a hub there where the mail for both cities goes to get on a plane.

So I can either mail from the post office down the street (I am less than a mile from 3 hubs), and it will get dumped into a truck, or I can drive ten minutes to the airport, and hand it off to them for it to go on a plane once processed.

On stuff that goes out internationally, I don't care if its just a $2 decal, I'll drive it to the airport so they get it faster.

the way I've done it for YEARS is take a piece of wax paper, line it with painters masking tape and draw your design on that with a sharpie, then lay the mask on the item

for about a year I used contact shelf liner which worked well if you dont want to clearcoat, it left too much residue

now that I can cut it I use mask material designed for the task at hand.

would you like me to cut off some 8.5" X 3.5" pieces of actual paint mask and mail them to you... blank of course (since you want to cut it by hand)

that way you can have the best material possible that is designed specifically for what you're doing

just PM me an addy (if you would like them) and I'll pop a couple in the mail
