Didn't know journals had a post limit...

      Triage X
Take Batman, expand it into a team, have the action of Expendables, then turn the fanservice knob to the max +1 and you get Triage X. The story follows a vigilante group that executes criminals while having a very medically oriented theme and lots and lots of boobs. Fun little watch but it is far in the back burner for one that I may catch up on. I like the detailed gun drawings but I can also find that in High School of the Dead as well.

Sidonia no Kishi: Daikyuu Wakusei Sen-eki
Sequel to Knights of Sidonia season one. Quick summary: humans live on a giant rock colony running from alien enemy and fight them with mechs. I will be honest in that I never touched season two yet but if season one was any indication, it will be incredibly good with great action and somewhat grounded hard sci-fi.

      Gintama
One of those super long series but god damn this one is amazing. Watch the parody king of anime continue along their adventures yet make pit stops to poke fun at current events or other series in the best way possible. I frequent pauses before picking up and watching numerous episodes in bulk but it holds up very well. Please note, DO NOT WATCH THIS BEFORE SLEEP! May result in laughter and tears at the same time!

I've skipped many anime series for spring 2015 but dabbled in those that caught my eye then dwindled them down accordingly. I walked in thinking I was screwed but found it quite manageable. Hope this can somewhat serve as a guide for anyone interested in the titles I have listed. If anyone wishes to discuss more or need additional suggestions, just send a message my way!

With more time on my hands, I should probably get back to writing up anime reviews that I have long ignored. I hope this may serve as a guide for those who may stumble upon this post. Without further adieu, lets tackle Spring 2015 anime list.

Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darouka (DanMachi)
The premise of the anime is very much oriented with the JRPG formula in which a newbie adventurer sets out to make a name for him or herself. I read the manga and light novel and found the concept of set dungeons, their equivalent of guides called familia, and god's blessing as a numerical representation of their skills, growth, and level up to be a step above other adventure animes. The fanservice is heavy with this one. I had certain expectations prior to the transition to the anime that were altered such as character art design or story progression. To be honest, it was a fun watch but not highly recommended until a much later episode where one fight made it all worth it. I look forward to the successive seasons to come!

      Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu
What do you get when you take the world of Suzumiya Haruhi without the twist of aliens, time travelers, espers, or sliders? You get a regular school romantic comedy drama! But who said a normal world would be boring? It may not stand up to the greatness that season one of Suzumiya Haruhi brought forth but what has? And honestly, if we want crazy, there are two seasons and a movie for that. I actually enjoy watching a bit of normal with the same loveable characters. Most of all, Nagato Yuki deserves a bit more screen time!

      Shokugeki no Souma
Cooking anime with excessively exaggerated motions and reactions. Its a formula that has been done numerous times but I will always fall for it. The story follows a high school boy who has worked at his family diner all his life striving to surpass his father. Seeing his passion for cooking, his father enrolls him in a cooking school, which turns out to be the top cooking school in the country. I actually found the anime kind of enjoyable and fun. Deep inside, I kind of hope that I will get new ideas to bring to the home kitchen though that may be a long shot. The perversion and reactions are a little over the top. Fun watch if you like cooking! Personally, I think I may just stick to the manga.

      Owari no Seraph
A virus ruins the human world and vampires come out of the woodwork to gather up children to harvest blood. One kid vows vengeance against vampires after his adoptive family is slaughtered. Like action fights and vampires? This is probably the anime for you! It reminds me of Vampire Knight and something else though I can't really put my finger on it. It is fun to read and watch though it failed to maintain my attention to the end. It will be something I will complete should my anime watching queue start to dry out.

      Gunslinger Stratos
I walked in not knowing what this anime is about and walked out still not knowing what this anime was about. The first episode was bland without any real hook to keep me watching. I did enjoy seeing the futuristic world in some ways but I can find other anime doing it much better. The characters were lackluster and the plot felt non-existent. The fact I finished episode 1 is probably worthy of an achievement pop.

      Plastic Memories
In the near future, advanced artificial intelligence units inhabit android bodies living side by side humans with almost no distinction except for the fact they have a 9 year lifespan before the equivalent of Halo's rampancy. The anime begins with a guy working for the only company capable of producing these androids, except he is employed by the division in charge of collecting androids nearing the end of their life cycle. I will admit I watched the anime merely for the character artwork. Not a bad premise and its quite interesting to watch. The filler portions of each episode does make it difficult to complete the series though. Much like DanMachi, there is one part that kind of made it all worth it, but this may differ from person to person. This is also in the back burner for me to complete once I remember

      Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)
Take the crazy monster infested and chaotic world of Trigun, encapsulate it in a circular ring like Darker than Black, and give it great music like Cowboy Bebop and you have Kekkai Sensen. The crazy story follows a seemingly normal and wimpy guy as the city keeps hurling trouble his way. Looking at the world, the concept, and numerous voice actors/actresses, I actually found this is like a modern gothic take on Gintama. Pretty good character design with amazing art and music. This is probably my favourite anime of this season. I walked in with high expectations given the creator of Trigun made this and I was not disappointed. If I had to nitpick, its that some of the other side characters don't get enough screen time making them feel insignificant. That and I want episode 12 to come out!

      Hibike! Euphonium
Another Kyoto Animation music high school anime, except it isn't. Follow a freshman high school girl as she joins the school band and aims for national championships while struggling to come to terms with her lack of confidence, uncertainty, and an argument she had with a good friend in her previous school. I was afraid this would become a K-On! remake. Sure that series was fun in the beginning but it felt too happy go free with a pinch of fairy dust and whip cream. Everything seemed to fall in place and it just wasn't fun to watch. Hibike felt more like showing the harsh side of reality but still making it presentable and fun with a clear goal shown and the progression towards it. I only watched up to episode 5 but it I will complete this one day. Not going to lie as I did watch this anime due to fanart of a certain character. Still, I would recommend to anyone interested in music!

I'm very critical about the media I intake. I judge many things in a harsh manner breaking it down into components and criticizing it. This aspect of me has ruined certain anime titles for me... as well as pissed people off. So why start with this? I was iffy about RWBY at first. I really had no idea where it was truly going, but this was only based upon the trailers. After watching all four, I categorized it as an amalgamation of the following: Final Fantasy, Black Rock Shooter, and Hatsune Miku. There were major aspects that reminded me of those titles such as the abuse of physics during combat, Weiss reminded me of Hatsune Miku and Yuuki Asuna from Sword Art Online, Ruby's scythe reminded me of Dead Master's weapon from BRS... when I just looked at RWBY, I found myself tying it to various other popular and successful titles. Still, I recognized it as something special that I should at least try.

Boy was a surprised. First episode proved to be much more interesting and entertaining than I thought. I even walked in with some expectations so I was even harsher than usual too! Rather than jumping straight into action like the trailers or letting us discover the universe over time, we have a premise... its something that always sets the tone and mood. The fact that a writer has gone through the process of developing something deep and full of thought is a wondrous thing. Its why I love certain series like SAO or Toaru Majutsu no Index. These two particular series have depth and substance to their back story. However, RWBY didn't stay on the grim side but immediately contrasted it in a wonderful manner. Now comes to the bad part... I actually didn't like Ruby's voice during the Yellow trailer. Sorry Lindsey!! But this changed during episode 1. There was so much life and variation to Ruby that I no longer saw her as an intimidating girl with a gigantic scythe but a young girl with personality and substance! The animation has its pros and cons. Monty, you are a genius at action scenes. The character artwork is also amazing. Where I find things lacking are the backgrounds, the non-essential/speaking background characters, and the lack of particle effect or thrust from the airship. Its the small details that really bring animations to life. I know I'm being too harsh... but I only go through the effort for things that I like and enjoy!

My verdict: RWBY proved to be more interesting and enjoyable than I thought. I can honestly say I am looking forward to future episodes. Too bad I have to ignore physics... still, I'll just have to switch off that part of my brain and admire the character design and weapons! Btw, any chance we can see better artwork of the airship Ruby and Yang rode on?

P.S. in my defense for my harsh criticism, Rebuild of Evangelion movies have set the bar WAY TOO HIGH for animations... but even then, modern anime studios have made amazing strides in their animation quality. I'm too use to Japanese produced anime...

I got my first cellphone in my first year of university. Since then, I've used three different "dumb" phones. None of them were truly capable or modular. Their functionality was quite basic limited to calling, sending and receiving text messages, and utilizing a poor camera. The only redeeming feature was the incredibly long battery life that allowed me to charge on a weekly basis. Regardless, I had to supplement my everyday carry with an iPod Touch for entertainment, digital organizing assistant, and other minor tasks. Not exactly ideal to carry two electronic gadgets. It proves to be bulky and heavy.

Finally, after years of slaving around with a boring cellphone (with a dying slide out keyboard) and a bummed up iPod Touch (2nd generation), I join the ranks of Android users! I initially denied myself a smartphone due to the cost of the hardware, the frequent charging cycles required, and the undeniable fact that I didn't need it. Over time, my perspective changed. I was being left behind on the times and decided I should invest in one. My aging gadgets just didn't prove to be as useful as I'd like them to be. I was forced to delete text messages on a regular basis. The camera had no real use with the low quality sensor and optics. My iPod Touch was failing on me not to mention the inability to upgrade my applications due to the old operating system. So here we are, my first Android powered device: the Samsung Nexus S. OK, so it isn't a new Android phone and its almost two generations old in terms of the Google Nexus line, but it was among the first Android phones I truly respected and liked. The fact it was second hand also cut the cost down significantly. Honestly, at this point, anything was an upgrade to my old phone. I was even considering a Blackberry just to at least have the unlimited text storage. My two old pocket gadgets are happily retired or delegated to minor tasks whereas my Nexus S is my primary carry. Now comes the fun part of customizing and tweaking to be exactly as I like it. I normally would not do this, but any suggestions?

    • Anime Review: Psycho-Pass

      koko

Psycho-Pass is one of the animes that I followed all the way through for the Fall and Winter season of 2012. It wasn't highly anticipated but the synopsis felt rather interesting enough for me to at least watch the first episode. Boy was I in for a surprise. It proved to be worthy of continuing for a variety of reasons but it did NOT blow my mind away. Not to berate it but the Winter 2012 season was rather disappointing. Now without further ado, onto the review!

      Story
Psycho-Pass takes place in the near future where technology has proliferated and developed a big brother system and society. People have their mental state evaluated among a number of other things in real time with assigned values called Psycho-Passes. Based on these, there is another value called the Criminal Coefficient in which the individual is likely to commit a crime. Given a high enough criminal coefficient, law enforcement detectives and enforcers are permitted to detain the suspect. I absolutely love the story. It is a serious theme and concept that feels intriguing. There are many questions left open in the beginning but they slowly explain things by connecting them or expose shocking revelations. However, as interesting as the anime was, I would lose interest in continuing on a weekly basis. After solving a case, I would lose the desire to continue the following week. As a result, I actually stockpiled a number of episodes to actually watch through in bursts at a time. Watching a number of episodes back to back was probably the best way to approach this, but waiting for it weekly failed to immerse me as other series do. That said, everything changed as the story approached its climax. Towards the end, I desperately wanted to know how it ended. The first half of the story serves very well for an introduction but it was the second half that held the juicy meat that we all want to wolf down on.

      Characters
Every character had unique features and personalities that made them memorable and likeable. Their stories were explored as part of the story, mentioned in between the lines, or held dedicated episodes. The main character, Tsunemori Akane was difficult to accept despite being the new detective. Her superior, Ginoza Nobuchika didn't fare any better as his character was designed to be less agreeable and counter-productive due to regulations and such. As a result, I was more interested by the enforcers and antagonist that have more devious intentions or extreme means of accomplishing tasks. Kogami Shinya was a very cool character. He filled that silent but deadly role that had incredible insight into things. Makishima Shogo looked intimidating and badass throughout the entire series. He proved to be a worthy antagonist for everyone. Of all the characters, Kogami Shinya and Makishima Shogo have to be my favourite characters. The enforcers Kagari Shusei and Masaoka Tomomi are honorable mentions as their characters grow on you over time. Psycho-Pass did a good job in designing the character artwork and personalities that gave room for conflict, struggles, development, and evolution.

      Presentation
It's a Production I.G. work, what can I say? Almost everything this studio touches has proven to be gold with deep and intricate stories, darker themes, and incredibly detailed animation and artwork. The thought process in creating this cyberpunk-like world while retaining recognizable elements for that universe's daily life is incredible. I love science fiction but often find it isn't executed as well as I'd like it to be. Production I.G. work always seems to do it right. Ghost in the Shell is a great testament to the work they can achieve and Psycho-Pass is up there.

      Conclusion
Spoiler alert in case no one has noticed. I have to admit, I had different expectations for the series ending. Tsunemori Akane's growth resulting from the collapse of Unit One and the secrets behind the Sybil System felt too sudden but I was able to stomach it for the sake of completing the series. Kogami Shinya's determination to deliver justice when the Sybil System refuses to was the one theme that I desired to see the outcome for. However, I had several scenarios planned out in my head prior to watching the final episode. One such outcome played out like this: Kogami Shinya fails to kill Makishima Shogo and is captured and integrated into the Sybil System. Kogami is pardoned for his actions and is reintroduced into Unit One without consequences. Another idea was that Sybil System lies to Tsunemori Akane then delivers judgment upon Kogami on the spot. Regardless of the outcomes, I thought Sybil System would determine Tsunemori Akane as a perfect candidate for integration and also a way of silencing her for good. Since neither of those scenarios played out and the studio decided with the current ending, I was rather surprised at the openness and loose ends. Not to say I am disappointed but I am just shocked at their lack of closure. For a system that wishes to safeguard its secrets, they should have silenced Tsunemori Akane especially after her display of "persuading' the Sybil System to spare Kogami Shinya. Regardless, it was an interesting series. With how the ending is structured, perhaps there will be a second season with Kogami Shinya returning or Tsunemori Akane rebelling against the Sybil System.

Not as long of a review as Sword Art Online but I just don't have as much to talk about. Its been a while since the series ended and I've jumped ships then. Here is to hoping there is a second season. If that doesn't come, then I just have to look forward to the animation of the GGO and UW arc of SAO!

Hehe, you talk pretty knowledgeably for someone who doesn't know much about paintball guns. The sidearm is actually a Psycho Ballistics Delta .88 cal. It's a terrible gun, but I don't usually admit that, because it's a fun one. You're still a bit off on the rifle, but close. I actually have a dual weaver rail for it, but that's not attached. I'm sure it will be when I get a decent scope.
