I was approached by BigBite recently to write a piece in their monthly RT community magazine. I was very humbled, especially since my segment would be debuting in the volume that lands on RT's birthday. Hopefully, I will do more in the future, but for now, I present to you Kriss' Korner. Check out the issue, follow their group, and you can also find them on Twitter at BIGBITEmedia.

      Ce-XEIQWAAAFu4h.jpg

Welcome to the very first segment of Kriss’ Korner! I’m Jackie and Kriss is my user name on the Rooster Teeth website. It’s very nice to meet you, and I am ecstatic to be in a position to help this community grow and become better than ever. As that is my vision for joining up with Big Bite, community is what I want to write about for this special volume.

Rooster Teeth was created on April 1, 2003. That’s right, it’s RT’s birthday this month! Thirteen years of making fun and silly videos and bringing millions of people together from all over the world. As the years have gone by, the community has grown, mirroring the inevitable expansion of the company itself. From Achievement Hunter to Funhaus and now with the addition of Screw Attack, RT has brought so many people together, it is quite awe-inspiring. As SA has become part of RT very recently, I thought it would be beneficial to give you guys a rundown on them.

You find these lovely people on the RT site/Twitter under the following profiles:

      Craig: RT - @CraigSkitz / Twitter – StutteringCraig

      Chad: RT - @ChadScrewAttack / Twitter – ScrewAttackChad

      Ben: RT – @Ben Singer / ScrewAttackBen

Shaun (aka Bolen): RT –@GameAttackBolen / Twitter - ShaunBolen

      Nick: RT – @NickScrewAttack / Twitter – THENervousNick

      Sam: RT – @SamScrewAttack / ScrewAttackSam

Just like RT, you can view their content at ScrewAttack.com or on the following platforms:

      YouTube: http://bit.ly/SubtoScrewAttack

      Facebook: http://bit.ly/ScrewAttackFacebook
      Twitter: http://bit.ly/ScrewAttackTwitter

Now that introductions are sorted, I want to reiterate what I wrote in a previous journal when SA officially joined the RT site. Welcome them with open arms. These guys are very talented and creative and they have a lot of years under their belts. Did you know that they celebrated their 10th anniversary not too long ago? With all those years of producing content and making a name for themselves in their section of the internet, they have also created and built their own following called the g1 community. I implore you to welcome them as well. There is no us vs. them; we are all now part of the same community. That isn’t to say that one must shed themselves of one’s roots and history. Not at all. Embrace what made you become part of this community and take pride in it. Always cherish that. I also want to reassure you that we are all in this together and I am looking forward to the future to see what we can do as a community.

We all have different origin stories. We come from different backgrounds and we all have different reasons for joining the communities we have. And now, here we are as one cohesive unit. There is something for everyone and best yet when you find something that resonates with you, there is someone not too far away who has the same interests and before you know it, you’ve made a new community friend. Other than watching content, you can always check out the forums, go to RTX/SGC, and attend community events and gatherings. Those are the best ways to get involved with the community. Thanks to friends on the site, I was a part of podcasts, made collaborative video projects, hosted and participated in charity streams, created my own community gatherings… there is so much you can do. Whether you are openly active on the site or if you tend to lurk, know that you are part of something that is wonderful and inspirational.

If you’ve only watched RT content, I encourage you to browse through SA’s videos and vice versa. My personal favorites are the Death Battle videos. Absolutely phenomenal work. The bottom line is change can be scary, but if you approach it with an open mind and focus on the positive things, you can really see the beauty of such a transition.

Happy birthday, Rooster Teeth and community.

Craig, Chad, Ben, Shaun, Nick and Sam… welcome to the family. Now get to work. <3

Hey guys! As you know, Sidequest is officially on for RTX this year, and I know some of you are familiar with these community events and some of you are not. I was blessed to be asked to host the charity auction event last year and I am SO glad that @Alec captured most of those memories because that night was total blur to me. Sidequest is the perfect way to start convention hype and say farewell until next year. You get to mingle with RTX attendees, community members and Guardians alike and you create lasting memories together.

Tickets are still on sale too! http://rtsidequest.org/tickets I believe there are less than 70 tickets left, so if you are able to snag one, please do so and come hang out with us! As I am a Guardian again, I may not be able to attend each function in its entirety, but I am always thrilled to see you guys. You guys definitely make this convention for me and I love you for it.

Special shout out to @matt @kzuelch @Chris @Miles @RevDrMarquis @Axialmatt @Laurin Thanks for being such good sports during the auction last year <3

Enjoy the teaser, guys! More to come!

Guys! GUYS! RTX SIDEQUEST IS HERE! YAAAAAAAY!

      20160328-event-flyer-sq.jpg?w=2400

Amber Conrad (@superduperyay) has stepped in as leading lady, so please give her a big welcome. Guys, I am so excited for Sidequest. If you are unfamiliar with these community driven events, they coincide with RTX's schedule, so if you would like a chance to meet community members outside of the convention, this is your go-to event.

      Here's the breakdown:

Thursday, June 30: The charity auction! Easily a favorite event among the community. Dress up, look fancy, bid an auction items (pieces that are made BY the community) and help out charity. It truly is a wonderful experience and it is a great way to kick off RTX.

Where: Radisson Hotel & Suites Austin Downtown (Ballroom)

111 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78701

When: 8pm CST - midnight CST

      SPECIAL NOTE: All ages welcome

Saturday, July 2: Barlympics! Hang out, play pool, throw darts, etc... unwind after the biggest day of the convention. And drinks. Drink are definitely a thing. (Speaking of.. drink responsibly).

      Where: Buffalo Billiands

      201 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701

      When: 10pm CST - 2am CST

SPECIAL NOTE: Event is 18+ older

Sunday, July 3: Sidequest Lounge! The convention has come to a close, so take the opportunity to decompress and talk about your favorite moments of RTX. Sidequest has reserved Buffalo Billiards for this event, so take a load off and relax!

      Where: 201 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701

When: 9pm CST - midnight CST

SPECIAL NOTE: Event is 18+ older

Those of us who are used to attending the goodbye luncheon will notice that Salt Lick was not listed. Unfortunately, because of the timing of 4th of July this year, Salt Lick will be closed that Monday. =[ I don't even like BBQ and I'm sad about that! But Amber has worked hard to get the Sunday evening plans in order to make up for the goodbye luncheon and that in turn decreases the overall ticket price for Sidequest.

If you would like to see footage of these events, check out RTSidequest videos here!

      BUY TICKETS HERE

      Please read the FAQS

I will be attending this year. I hope to see you!

With all this community talk, I was inspired to update the RT Vegas logo. I was getting tired of seeing the black and red colors for the last three years, so naturally, I went for blue.

      kriss Community Manager

Guys, the lovely and ever so adorable @Chelsea just posted a page that lists out the active RT community groups, and it's awesome! Also, give props to @caleb because I know he's been hard at work with building this list as well <3 You can find that list here. http://roosterteeth.com/post/51258571

Based on a few of the comments, I do want to point out one thing.

Rooster Teeth does not create these groups. YOU DO. All of these groups were built from the ground up by people like you.

Do you want there to be a group in your area? Do you or someone you know want to take on the challenge of creating said group? Do you want some advice on how to start?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO THESE THEN CONTINUE READING.

It's so awesome that you want to start a community group in your area! Honestly, that's the first step in creating one. It'll be hard work, especially in the beginning but if this is something you really want to go for, then I support it 100%.

Do a quick search on the site for your location. Example, my area and community baby is RT Vegas. If you can see a group is active, then rock on and get involved! If you see that there is either no group or a group that has showed no activity in years, feel free to create one yourself. If you see that the founder of said group is active on the sight, give them the courtesy of messaging them and ask them what's up with the community group.

If you end up making a community group. My personal touch is create the group and bring it to life. Add a description, tell people what you want to do, and maybe slap together an RT community logo and use that as the profile photo. Canva is a great tool to stick a bunch of stuff together. Plus it's free! The overall message you want to convey is that you want people to see that the page is active and that you are serious about doing this. So make it presentable.

Do you happen to know other people in the area who love RT? Tell them about the group and tell them to tell their friends about it too! Start a Twitter account as well and start following other RT community groups. Get a feel for how they run things and interact with them. Just because you are located in different states/locations doesn't mean you can't form a connection. Lots of groups tend to livestream together or play video games, etc...The internet is a beautiful communication tool. Use it.

Once you're ready to have your first gathering. Test the waters and don't be upset if your first gathering is small. I tend to choose fairly inexpensive events like bowling or hanging out at an arcade and maybe we decide to go to lunch or dinner later. I'm pretty sure we will be doing mini golf next! Be mindful of everyone's travel/budget. This is where you have to really get a feel for your local community. What do they really like to do? How much do they like to spend? Are they sociable? Be open to suggestions too. Every group is different. What may work for one group may not work for another. Again, this part can be difficult, but don't be frustrated. Remember your overall goal: you want to build a place where people can get together and enjoy something they all love.

Set deadlines for yourself. Did you know that RT Community Day is the 15th of every month? Use that as a reminder to get things in gear if you want to organize a gathering. Sometimes, the 15th lands on a day that isn't convenient for most people, and that's okay! Celebrate on another day! If you want to have semi-regular community shenanigans, then set hard deadlines for things you need to do. Sometimes, it's as easy as HEY, SHOW UP HERE and people do, but other times, you may need to take some extra steps like... make reservations, or coordinate with other community members (depending on what you're doing). Be prepared.

Any time you start a community, it will take a bit for the ball to get rolling, but you cannot let that break you. You have to keep maintaining the group like a garden. It's a lot of responsibility and it will take extra time because it's all about coordination and organization. Once you have a few people who are interested in hanging out, tweet a date/time/location and/or update the group news post and have fun with it. And keep going. Interact with other people, search the forums for others, just keep going. Learn from your mistakes (because you will make a couple here and there) and always seek to improve what you do.

Local communities are about socializing, having fun, being silly and making friends. You've taken the first couple of steps toward that. I wish you the best of luck. I am so excited to see what you can create.

I've found that River is pretty simple as well. If you get two boom shields and put them in the opening of the buildings it's pretty well impossible to get in there. Ammunition might be the only problem. We actually just all goofed on wave 26 or 27, but it was 1:30 in the morning and the three of us all had to work in the morning so we left. We could have easily finished it if we had decided, or if we had 2 others in the game. We got killed because we came out from the cover :P

Whoa! Those are quite the suggestions! I really appreciate you taking your time to reply!!! :)

Ha ha, I've got the grammar and spelling down. (I hate reading things that are horribly phrased and have spelling mistakes everywhere.) Although, I have to admit that my last few fanfics (from 5 years go) have loads of typos and mistakes but I'm too lazy to correct them... D:

Oh! The "carry pen & paper" thing is a good idea. I sort of do that, but I always forget to write things down. Another thing I notice is I tend to think about plot lines a lot RIGHT before I sleep when I'm already in bed....(which is stupid because when I wake up I forget the details).

I haven't read fanfics in a long time, would it be okay if I asked to read some of your recent original works. (Each time I read fanfictions now, I tend to get embarrassed because they all make me think of those stereotypical over-the-top cheesy fanfics...)

      Nice to meet you, Jackie.

Oh I know, whatever amount of effort that has gone into a pic, its still an effort. At least they've tried. Its harsh to negatively mod someone for actually attempting something. If its offensive or deragatory then sure its OK to negatively mod, but for entering a competition. Too mean people. Too mean.
