The ladies over at WhatsGoodGames posted a video asking what would your dream video game mashup be ( Link here ), and of course they tended toward their favorite games/franchises for this. I thought it would be interesting to do the same mental exercise. below are the results.
I would say combine Halo and Spyro the Dragon (specifically the original insomniac run) into turn based Final Fantasy-esque RPG. They are two of my favorite video game series and the idea of taking those disparate styles and elements and making the highly serious Halo characters deal with zany spyro characters (or visa versa) would be entertaining.
I think it would be great to use an area based system (a la Grandia II or Final Fantasy Tactics) given the different skills and weapons involved, but I suppose a more traditional line em' up and knock em down rpg battle system could work. Your team can be broadly built, with the Master Chief and Blue team (Fred-104, Linda-058 and Kelly 087) joining forces with Spyro, Hunter, Bianca and Elora.
The universe traversing powers of the Spyro universe cause a mishap (as they often do) which disturb Halo's fragile subspace travel while the Halo characters are involved in a chase/conflict. Thus, Spyro, his allies and his enemies (An army of gnorcs and rynocs lead by Gnasty and/or Ripto) in a world between worlds where Forerunner Prometheans and zealous new covenant members are waging battle with the UNSC.
The characters would all slot decently into the 3-5 character system of turnbased RPG. Each gaining most skills through a leveling system and/or a materia-like system of upgrades with slots related to a weapon and a piece of armor. This would give both sides a chance to enhance using the magic/tech of the other group (dragonworld magic in UNSC weapons/armor and tactical tech in magical weapons). Each possessing a specialized overdrive skills as well. I see the characters breaking down like this:
Blue team's skills would largely lean toward physical/concussive or energy damage. Their weapons would be principally guns (with knives/ordinance/sidearms being skills)
John (Master Chief) would be a mid-range balanced fighter, use an assault rifle and have a few heavy hitting skills (and higher luck rolls). Armor piece would be his actual overshield pack. Overdrive skills would focus on vehicles with the signature being to drive and warthog into the enemies and somehow survive the explosion.
Kelly would a roguish close range fighter with more speed to cover distance, take more turns but lighter hits from her pistol and cqc moves, but with a few high-caliber ordinance moves later in game. Armor piece would be her leg gear. Overdrive skills would be heavy ordinance with the signature move being to call down a shot from a MAC in orbit.
Fred being a close range brawler is slower, but hits given are more damaging, best knife skills and has a shotgun as a primary weapon. Gloves for armor slot. And his overdrives would be a series of attacks against all enemies, with the signature being working his knife with expert skill.
Linda being a more ranged fighter with her sniper rifle, she would be for use against flying or distant enemies. lower armor ratings so keep her from the frey. helmet related gear for her armor. Linda's overdrive would focus in on a single target and be a high impact shot of specialty ammo into the perfect weak point.
The Dragonworld crew's skills would move across a broader variety of magics, but with the trade-off that more normal damage as done by Blue team is low.
Spyro would have a similar close to mid-range attack scheme to John, but with most mid-range attacks leaning toward magic. His weapons would be various forms of flame and his armor would equipped along his ridges. His overdrive's would relate to Dragonworld powers Spyro gains at times, with the signature being the beam like blasts of superflame from Spyro's 2 and 3.
Hunter the cheetah would use a bow and boots thus be a lighter hitting ranged fighter. He'd have less range than linda but with more mobility. His overdrive's would relate to the various minigames he set spyro on (manta ray races, skateboarding, etc) but his signature would be moving at a high rate of speed and sending ricocheting shots that hit a multitude of enemies all at once.
Elora the Faun would be like a white mage/summoner with the summons being various player characters from Year of the Dragon and various NPCs (Like Moneybags (who would require a payment to act), the dragons from the original game, or the Professor). The use of a summon spell would replace her slot on the field with the summoned character until they were either recalled, defeated or used more than a certain number of turns. Her weapons would be talismans from Ripto's Rage with orbs as her armor slot. her overdrives would allow for extra powerful summons (lower skill costs, higher damage, etc., with the signature being to summon a group of them all at once for a single fierce attack)
Bianca the Bunny would be a traditional black mage with spells ranging across the elemental spectrum. Her weapons being various spell books and her armor being cloaks. Her overdrives wouldn't need to be particularly amazing, honestly something like Lulu's black magic overdrive in FFX would work perfectly.
So yeah, there's the madness, I actually would love to see something off the wall like this. What games would you mix, how might the resulting game play, and why?
