I've been thinking about new video production projects, trying new types of production (streaming has been big on the list), and a thought occurred to me. Back in July of last year I put out a video on Dishonored and was pretty pleased with it. I recorded that on PC and have absolutely adored the game, I even got all the base achievements, and until recently that was the only version of the game I've had. Cue this month when Sony made the game free through PS+.

Now, I'm not the Achievement/Trophy collector that I used to be (never was much of one to begin with, but still) but I thought it'd be fun to get the Platinum Trophy on PS3 since I already did all the same achievements on PC. I'd also like to try out streaming AND I've been looking for ways to give back to the gaming community. Therefore, I think it'd be a lot of fun to do a Platinum Trophy stream for charity, hopefully raising some money to give to a good games-related charity like Child's Play. I guess what I'm asking is would anyone be interested in seeing that and, if so, donating to a good cause if it ends up coming together?

Thanks for reading, and I hope everyone's having a nice Friday.

      Cheers,

Or, like, subscribers or whatever. Seemingly out of nowhere this weekend, my subscriber count on YouTube has spiked pretty massively (at least compared to where it was at before). On Thursday evening I reached the 200 mark, and I was pretty jazzed for it, but then I woke up on Friday to 320. Since then I've seen some pretty steady growth, slowing a bit but passing 500 this afternoon. I have no idea what led to it but it's absolutely awesome, and I'm really grateful to all those folks who decided that the stuff I make is worth a subscription. If any of you who happen to read this are among that number, thank you so much! It's really encouraging and I'm excited to keep making my Great Levels in Gaming series, plus potentially another I'm mulling over.

      Thanks!

It's uploading now! I just finished my video on Dishonored, and even though it looks like YouTube won't have it before midnight, I'd like this post to stand as a record that I did NOT go a month without an episode of Great Levels in Gaming. Just, you know, for posterity or something.

This is a couple weeks old but I wanted to confirm some details about it before sharing. A couple weeks back I got a PM sent to my channel and it turned out to be a college student requesting permission (though she really doesn't need it) to quote/cite my GLiG video on Final Fantasy XIII in a paper that she's expanding to submit for publication. Basically the coolest email I've ever received. It was really humbling & gratifying to hear that my work was so well-received, so I'm really hoping for her that the paper gets published and that I can share it here, because it sounds like a really awesome project.

I unexpectedly got access to a beta code last night, just started playing the Destiny beta on PS4 and I'd love to know if anyone else is playing on that platform in case they might like to form up a fire team. Might be fun to try out the co-op, especially since it was always my favorite part of the Halo games. Anyone?

    • 1st day of RTX 2014

This has been my first day in Austin & of my first ever RTX and it has been an absolute blast. Before coming down to Austin, I'd never actually been farther west than Ohio, so I've just been doing my best to take everything in. Completely aside from the excellence that is RTX, this city is truly incredible. Of course, being me, my frame of reference of course is food.

Our flight last night got in much later than we expected, so we ended up at the Whataburger on 1st & Barton for a midnight burger (delicious). But then tonight after the conclusion of the Patch Panel (which was incredible) we hopped in a cab and headed over to the County Line on the hill, and that was an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life. This was our view out the back up there:

      ?ui=2&ik=3e2d57160a&view=fimg&th=1470470

We couldn't have been there on a more beautiful day and everyone there (and everywhere else we've been for that matter) couldn't have been nicer. All the great things we've heard about Austin so far look to be 100% on the money.

Austin is amazing and I'm so glad to have come down here for RTX. I got to meet @Jinx after the Sunset Overdrive demo on the main stage and she was awesome, super nice and even took my card (I really hope I might get so extremely lucky as to get some feedback from her). I was super psyched to meet her since her news content on The Know and The Patch is always so interesting, informative, & fun. I hope I can meet even more amazing Cockbites tomorrow, and am especially excited and hopeful that I could meet @jack and @burnie since I've really been inspired by them in making my videos.

So all in all, day 1 of RTX 2014 has been an absolute blast. Can't wait for day 2!

      Cheers!

    • I tend to lack follow-through

so I'm really excited that I stuck to my guns and have kept on track with my production goal. A few months ago I set the goal to get 8 videos done in time for RTX, and Episode 8 of my series just went up. In the grand scheme of things it's no great leap, but as someone who can have big ideas and fail to see them through from time to time, it's satisfying to have set the goal of 8 videos, not having made any before January, & seen it through to success. A little thing, but hopefully someone might see this & follow through on a goal they set for themselves too.

      Happy RTX week everyone!

If you happen to be interested in seeing #8, I posted the link in my 'Links' section and it can be viewed here:

Great Levels in Gaming - Episode 8 - Halo: Combat Evolved

And fittingly with the week, you can see this one takes a look at a game near & dear to many who frequent this site. As always I'd love to get your feedback!

Hi everyone, I know not a ton of folks keep an eye out for these, but to those who do I wanted to let you know that I'm working on my next video, but it's a bit slow going. Family health issues have been on the forefront of my life lately, and when I'm not helping with that I've been at my actual jobs just about 24/7. I'm in the process of wresting back some control of my schedule at the moment so I hope to get my videos out with some regularity since I thrive on putting them together and hearing when you enjoy them.

Enough about my life though, how are you all doing? Any projects you're excited about? Pumped for RTX? Let me know, I haven't heard from you folks in a while!

After I finished recording the voiceover for the video I'd planned to edit together today, I discovered that Handbrake has a specific setting for output files of size >4GB. Apparently, the "Large File" setting sets the encoded video to be a 64-bit mp4 file as opposed to the default 32-bit type, which doesn't work for files above 4GB in size. I hadn't used the "Large File" setting before, however, which turned out to be tricky given that all 5 of the 2-hour-or-so footage files I had were no less than 6GB each. Oh well, I can always re-record...

MAX. I was scrolling through my sub box and saw GLIG and I'm like, "Oh cool, #19, no wait there's no number, NO WAIT THAT'S NOT MAX'S CHANNEL WHAT THE"

Congrats dude! So good to see your efforts finally getting the acknowledgement they deserve. Hopefully it pans out for ya.

Much more on par with your other work.
      Love the revisions.
Your puns at the end were groan worthy, didn't see those coming.

There were some minor things in there about the game design that I disagreed with, not so much because that's not how the raid was designed, but because of how quickly people found glitches, exploits, cheeses, and then did a two man raid.
The vault seemed like it was super hard, but now people can run it super fast and with very few people.

      But that's all Bungie fault.
It's hard to make content that's hard for a very long amount of time.
it just seems like it's hard for a while and then never hard again.

Runescape is plagued with that issue.
Every new boss is the hardest thing ever made, but give it three months and if you can't solo it you're not very good.

      Great video, though.
Captures more of your original focus.

Thanks, man! And I agree, it was one of the harder things about writing about the VoG. It's designed all around the idea of there being 6 players [but that one time 2 guys managed to clear it]. Ultimately I decided on not muddying the waters by mentioning the more extreme situations since the vast majority of runs are going to have a group closer to the intended size.

Also, I'll take the comment about the puns as a copmliment smiley8.gif I like to sneak in the puns at the end if I can. Did omit a truly awful groaner I'd originally written into the beginning, though, so at least the world was spared that.

Thanks again for the encouragement, it helps to know there are folks out there interested in the series being as good as it can be.

      GLIG #16

I've been a fan of GLIG since it's inception.
I think you have a way of making people care about levels in game that they've never played, and I also think you've sold a few copies of those games for the devs with your series.

Number 16 is the exception for me.
In GLIG you focus on great levels IN gaming, in number 16 you focus on the story outside the game that makes the level better, not the level itself.
To your credit, you do talk about gameplay mechanics, more specifically weapon balances, and I thought all of that was on point with your normal scopes.

I played Destiny religiously for 4-5 months after it came out.
Without a doubt the most fun I had in the game was doing the raid with 5 of my friends, but the fun came from the gameplay and the people.
This video is the first I'm hearing about any of the story mentioned, wether it's the vex being able to manipulate time and space, the Vault being a testing chamber for world dominator, the relic being a space time continuum shield, etc.

Speaking about the raid you said, "It's marriage of level design and lore make it the kind of game design that shouldn't be lost to the dark corners of time." There is no lore in the level, there's hardly any story in the game.
      There's no real marriage.
It's like two strangers in a bar who had a pleasant conversation but have fears of commitment.
The two are meant to be together, but they aren't.

But that's just my two cents.

Love your series, keep it up.
It's good seeing people make great content with actual thought behind it.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, this one isn't my best work, and I'm actually doing something I haven't before & going back to the drawing board to redo it. I didn't like that I focused so heavily on the lore: I love how the design reflects the lore but have always been disappointed with Bungie's decision to hide it away in the stupid Grimoire.

I've got about a page of rewrites so far (it's currently a bit under a quarter of the word length of my original script) and I'm focusing more on the gameplay, with only bits of lore connections here and there. The lore is useful to understanding the raid, but I realized that it's not what originally struck me about it. I still want to mention it, to do so while more clearly stating that it's an aspect of the design that is done far from optimally, and I'm struggling to figure out how to do so concisely. Might just omit it, since the game doesn't seem to care much for it. Writing has been tough lately and I think my work reflected that, so I've been disappointed with this video to say the least.

Here's hoping version 2 is more in line with what it should be. I don't want to go letting my standards slip, so thanks for helping me keep them where they should be, it really means a lot smiley1.gif Thanks for the support!

Thanks for add bro, you've obviously got good taste about video games if your going back to play the first starcraft. You'll have to let me know what you think of it when your done.

Well, I can say your great with the 'lecture' format. Improve is another animal I suppose, probably important if you want to work for a company like rooster teeth that puts on live shows.. you'll have to let me know if you make a discussion like video, I subscribed to your channel.. But for a channel like that(an informative gaming channel) I tend to only watch videos about games that I'm fond of or interested in(like farcry 3)

That actually is my goal, and it's so encouraging to hear your feedback! My hope is to eventually build up a portfolio of videos sizable enough for me to feel comfortable submitting them in an application to a place like RT, rev3games, or maybe even somewhere like Penny Arcade. I'm nowhere close yet, but I hope I can keep making stuff you'd be interested in watching, I'm hoping to get off-script and closer to a discussion, as opposed to a lecture.

I just watched your farcry 3 video, it's pretty good. You've got a good voice for it, plus the pace and editing of the video seemed perfect to me. You deserve the 100% thumbs up ratio you have so far. I liked it just as much as I do rooster teethes video's like 5 facts. It's not my favorite kind of video(I watch youtube mostly for comedy), but it's great for a informative gaming video. If you keep making videos like that, I wouldn't be surprised if you could eventually do it for a living(presuming that's your goal.)

Thanks, you're too kind! The game's such a classic that I feel like I need to have experienced it, and I've heard great things about the missions, so I wouldn't be surprised if one ends up catching my eye for my series. Did you check out either of the videos I linked in the forum post? I'm getting started with them and I'm looking to get as much feedback as possible.
