Day 108 Part II
I quickly moved to an observation post keeping my head low as I got to the boarded up window. Using half a binocular as a telescope, I scanned the area. Ten feet over, Cassie was doing the same thing. I looked all around slowly as I heard everybody moving around. Some were going to observation areas; others were packing up or getting supplies ready. It had been three hours since we heard the shot and roar. It was getting late now but none of us felt tired.
I felt something next to me and turned to see Dawn there.
I gave her a soft hug as she returned it. "Mell, you need to relax. You're getting gray hairs from all this.'
I nodded after a few second. I knew I was working a lot like everyone. But something kept telling me that we were preparing for the wrong thing. Yet I didn't wanna tell anyone because I didn't know what we were preparing for.
Looking at Dawn I smiled a little. "Well, at least we know that things are fortified, watched, covered, and secured.'
She nodded. "Yeah ... but against what or who? The creature? The people in the area? Raiders? Too much we don't know.'
Cassie had limped over. "At least we know that we have each other to rely on.'
I stood up and hugged my sister. "Indeed and that's a lot.' I still felt bad about her injuries. But our exploring had led us to finding the eagle base; but at a great cost. On the other hand, there was no way to know if any of us would have survived otherwise, if they had hit us first.
Cassie slapped me. "Get over feeling bad, I can see it in your eyes lil sis. I'm still alive and kicking more ass than you ever could.' I smiles softly, unable to stop myself.
Dawn chuckled a little as the three of us set down. I looked over and saw Abbi making her way over to us. I wave to her smiling until I see her expression, my face falling. "Um, what's wrong Abbi?'
Abbi sits next to us. Without any pretense she looks at us. "Meeting in five minutes. All people needed. Do a quick 720 check, log it, and then come to the alley.' We all nodded as she ran.
I got back in my spot and started scoping the roofs. I moved my scope slowly along, watching the roofs and windows. After a while, I froze and moved back quickly making a scraping sound as my gun ran along the rough edge of the roof. I stared at a window frame feeling confused. Cassie came up behind me slowly.
"Mell, what is it?'
"... I don't know ... I thought I saw a form in that building. Like a person or something...'
"Log it then. We need to get the moving... But keep your heads low ok?' Dawn finished up her scans and made notes then moved off the roof.
I look at Cassie. "Last time we ignored something, things got bad fast.' She nods but writes it down then leads us to the alley. I follow her thinking of the shape I saw. I couldn't tell who it was but I was feeling sure it had been a human.
We walk into the meeting space and I look around. Everyone but one team is here, sitting down or leaning on walls. I sit next to Dawn and Cassie leans behind us. Alexis smiles looking around, "We'll wait for Brad and Josh to join us then start this meeting.' As if on cue, the two walk in from the ruined building. She claps her hands and smiles. "Ok. So we have good news, bad news, and horrible news. However the bad and horrible won't make sense without hearing the good first.
She sits down with a soft sigh. "Ok... so the group that we've been camped here waiting for isn't coming. Adam heard a weak radio signal from one of the outposts that they just arrived. That's good because they are still alive. The bad news is we still can't send out a signal of our own. The horrible news is that now we have to leave but we don't know if it's safe. With all the noises we been hearing lately it's hard to be sure who or what is out there and where it is.'
I look around the room to see most people are nodding their heads slow in agreement. I feel the same but at the same time I want to get out of here and find a new place. Suddenly Cass speaks up. "Hey Alexis, Mell here has something to say.' I blink then yelp when she elbows me. I glare at her then turn to Alexis.
"Yeah, I guess I do. Before we can to this meeting, doing the 720 check, I saw something odd. I was scanning the windows and saw something but didn't notice at first. When I looked back however, the window was empty, no one there.'
She nods slowly as everyone looks at me. "I don't know what the person looked like since I skipped over it so fast and when I came back, it was gone. But I know I saw something there.'
Chris speaks up. "I trust you Mell. It's just this adds a whole new level of unknowns for us. Was he staring our way?'
I shrug. "Like I said, I scanned over it too fast to really pay attention.'
Before people can start arguing, Alexis speaks up. "Then we will have to be slow and careful with our plans everyone.'
